  1. I wonder how it compares to the BMPCC6K - not so much for RAW (which I think the BMPCC would win given the compression advantage) - but just for 4K IQ. The BMPCC6K uses EF glass and comes it at almost 1/3 the cost. Really curious to see how it compares in dynamic range and the texture and depth of the image. I've been pretty impressed by the 6K thus far, it's limitations and inconvenience notwithstanding.

Not sure about 1.3x? Same crop as 1D X II so more like 1.4x in DCI 4K and 1.5x in UHD

Shame no DPAF in the highest quality 60fps modes.

Does it work in 5K RAW at all? 24p?

So a bit crippled, but the main thing that cripples this camera is the DSLR form factor. We are way beyond it.

Durability though. Tough to beat with any other form factor. I lament most the fixed screen...

5.5k raw dpaf up to 30 fps

4k FF dpaf up to 30 fps

4k 1.3x crop DCI dpaf up to 60fps

FF FHD dpaf up to 120fps

    10bit clog is always h265

Thanks. I didn't see it listed on Andrew's chart. Any idea how much recording time we have in 4k 1.3x crop DCI dpaf in 60fps on a 64gb or 128gb card?

The AF. Much better than S1H. A deal breaker for me and for many on the S1H.
But the 1DX size is a deal breaker for me (so is the price).

So I am still waiting for that FF 4K60 10 bit no crop camera. Last hope in the near term is on Sony A7SIII. Let's see.

Me too. I want an uncropped, full frame 4K60p 10bit tool. I can look past the lack of IBIS and ND filtration, but if I'm paying $6,000 i don't want any crop. Otherwise, I can just stick with an APSC Pocket 6K and have 10bit RAW 6K at 50fps. Yes there are some ergonomic and battery issues, but nothing that can't be addressed with < $500 extra.

Let's try to keep it constructive. I didn't mean to attack you and I've been reading your blog for years... Well first off, I don't give a shit about 6K, but full frame 60p 4k would have been nice (actually I don't care much about full frame filmmaking, it's just the crop in 60p that is unpractical in the field, don't you think ? Remember EOS R). And to me, all cameras are already where I want them to be. I'm happy with my BMPCC4K, my Fuji XT3, my canon 5D mk III ML RAW... but if I had to buy something new, it would have to make a real difference, something very innovative, especially at 4000$. I'd be glad to have a variable ND like the one in the FS5 and FS7 mkII or RAW or PRORES just like you ask so many times in your blogs for instance... Good AF for gimbal work would also be a plus. That's it.

I'd genuinely like to hear you about the crop in 60p and also the HFR crippled with the S1, or not.

Agreed. Crop in 60p was a real bummer for me. Would have also like to see higher bit rates/pro res.

  6. Great piece, Andrew, and I agree with the premise. These offerings lack 'soul' and the analogy to Toyota couldn't be any more accurate.

Cameras have become part of the tapestry of culture (both as tools used for the creative arts and as accessories that we carry around with us) and as such, demand some attention to aesthetics and ergonomics. I don't see Sony innovating nor even evolving with each life cycle of their product. It's the death of imagination and the murder of the beautiful at the hands of technocracy.

Well done for discovering the upmost shit on YouTube that sums up everything I hate about the worst YouTuber tendencies. That is quite some find.

    HYPE HYPE HYPE

Shilly McShillFace and his background porno musak, says the SEPERATE QUICK FUNCTION MENU is a MAJOR VIDEO FEATURE as he puts a 1000 watt grin on.

Yes IBIS works fine. The manual aperture ring on the 35mm FE F1.4 isn't supported though, so have to change the aperture on the Nikon body dial as usual. Like I say, earliest firmware, so there will be things that improve later on.

    I just shot my dogs.

It's ok, they're not dead... But I shot them, and it tracked marvellously in 4K and 1080/120fps... I'll post the results later.

Thanks. How difficult is to get the ring on the body given how thin it is? Is there any play between lens and body?

Hmmm. Z6 sidelined for video... I have a huge Pelican case of vintage and modern Nikon-F glass that begs to differ. And Minolta MD. And Exacta. I can mount virtually any lens I want. B4, PL... Any look I want in terms of contrast, flare, lack of flare, glass-cutting sharpness of Nikon S glass.

Having shot professionally with: Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Nikon and Canon, I’m not a fanboy of any brand. In a gen-1 camera, Nikon gives us: Full-width 4K readout. IBIS. Nikon color. Most legacy F mount Nikon/Sigma AF glass 10-bit 4:2:2 and soon ProRes RAW HDMI out. Eye AF (in May.) Atomos development collaboration. Weather sealing. Good battery life. Nikon build quality. An excellent touch interface. Nikon menu structure and customization. XQD/CFExpress speed, capacity and reliability (May.) Robust low light recording. Good tracking AF in 1.0 firmware...

I too am impressed with the Z6. Ticks off a lot of boxes in a very small and light form factor. I'm a former Canon, Sony and Panasonic user. I also have an XT3 which I love and recently got the Z6. The Z6 is blowing me away across the board. Really, the only thing it's lacking is 4k60p and a robust native lens lineup (for now). The IBIS is better than I expected, 120fps is excellent, weather sealed, awesome low light capability, touch interface, good battery life and eye-AF and ProRes Raw on the way! Very happy so far.

I think that it is wrong direction of thinking to compare Tony N's one person's youtube exhibition and eoshd concept of existence.

Two totally different approaches that at any means can't be comparable in term of quality - that means reality - of influence. Here we have hundreds of personalities becoming from the whole spectre of competency, background and usage, endless devoted testing and retesting, thousands contributions from different angles and point of view - and in the other side is just one man and one woman with all of their simply human prejudices, assumptions and often contradictory daily opinions, obviously urged to pump new reviews every week as important material resource. Here we have very live pattern of society, and there just classical self promoting show. Tony is better half of its presentation just showman who - as all showmen - actually lives on giving people opportunity to kill boring time.

So, any dispute with Tony N. about camera is wrong as premise. That's because his ultimative goal is not at all objective review, but publicity. Nothing especially wrong with it in world founded on fakery - he just tries to swim in it as notorious and less or more skillful conformist.

Saying that - it maybe good idea to see again Bertolucci's The Conformist :)

It is refreshing however, to see a one of these YT celebrities recommend restraint. Too many have become product peddlers.
