exactly and this lens is just 120% pure joy in use!
Interestingly, I found out that a two pass encoding from FCPX to compressor yields better quality than rendering ProRes directly from FCPX. So in the end, the result is better than expected, yet shows that the A7ii is quite limited:

Thanks for all the comments. I came to the conclusion that I will try the A7 II since in Germany it is half the price of an A7R II (both used). If it as bad as nearly everybody is saying, I wont loose too much money reselling it, as @mercer pointed out.
I am basically in love with the 40mm focal length. The Panasonic 20mm 1.7 is permanently attached to my GX85, making it an awesome combo. However, the AF is quite bad compared to other m43 lenses and manual focus is a pain with that lens. At the same time I would love to have more DOF control in that focal length and I am generally in love with Voigtländer lenses - imho(!) nothing compares to them. And this makes the Voigtländer Nokton 40 1.2 quite unique - there is simply no other lens in the 40mm focal length range with such a beautiful manual focus combined with such an aperture.

Please dont take this offensive, but why I am in love with a particular lens is not the subject of this topic. This topic is solely about whether the A7 II is really as bad as people tell. The result is that I will test this by myself :)

There are way too many armchair professionals around here so @jase, I think it will be difficult for you to get an honest opinion of this camera based on YOUR criteria for wanting one.
I shared your interest in this camera about a year ago and scoured Vimeo and YouTube for video samples and honestly, I found some pretty good stuff shot with it, so for the price... go for it.
You’ve proven time and time again that you are more than capable enough to produce quality work with whatever camera you have in your hands.
If you don’t like it, you can easily sell it and get your money back, or very close to it... so where’s the harm? Or maybe you’ll like the lens so much that you’ll want to upgrade to the a7iii. I see no harm in a good old fashioned test.

As mentioned above, the best thing is to try an a7 II first if possible.
One thing I didn't see asked before is WHY you want to use the Nokton 40mm f/1.2 lens? what is so special about this lens?
I think if you are going to be shooting close to wide open, then you will be less bothered by the moire and aliasing than you would if you were shooting with a larger DOF (that's the way it is for me on my a6500 shooting in 1080p).
A few people have mentioned various soft filters as well for shooting on the a6500 in 1080p.
There are other "interesting" things about Sony cameras you should consider as well, like the color science, the ergonomics, the LCD screen brightness (or lack thereof), the menus, the battery life, the SD card placement...
And note that this is coming from a 100% Sony FanBoy...
I mean, I am seriously considering buying a FF a7 III and using my aps-c glass on it - and taking a hit in resolution - for the sole benefit of the better ergonomics / usability.
Granted, the ergonomics on the a7 II are probably much better than on the a6500 / other Sony aps-c cameras. Still, something to think about.

It depends on your frame of reference.  For me, 'can do everything' includes wild-life one second and a wide panorama the next without time to change lenses, and coming from a world that thinks that a 700D is a 'big camera' a 5D or C100 are so absurdly large that people openly stare with mouths agape.  Also, I'd like image quality approaching 4K compressed or 1080 RAW.
We're in a difficult time - cameras have enough capability and accessibility to give us grand ideas, media consumption is high enough quality that we know nice images when we see them, but the tech isn't quite there yet.
I know BM is concentrating on the slow/planned styles of film-making, but they're so insanely good at delivering awesomeness I'm just jealous I'm not in their target camera market!!

That would be ironic. Well it certainly saves having to buy more than one expensive autofocus adapter. Even for Nikon G glass.
The TechArt is mindblowingly good for stills and AF-S... but again same limitation as the Metabones for AF-C in video mode... And it's pretty noisy.
Apparently it can focus larger lenses up to 700g
The motor housing is tiny, much smaller than the motorised Sony A-mount adapter.
    Vogitlander 35mm F1.2 autofocus anyone?

My dear erstwhile member can you please stop attacking John Brawley now.
I have long since given up on camera forum arguments so might not be completely up on who is right and who is wrong-evil / killed-a-kitten, but can we tone it down a bit. It's JB! We could be learning so much and having such interesting cameras talks with a film industry guy and I am sure one of the only people with a Blackmagic Pocket 2 prototype yet instead a handful of you are just bitching. It's pointless. Even if you disagree with him on certain matters, hold your tongue a bit for the benefit of the rest of us who are interested in what he has to tell.

The LANC controllers don't trigger the autofocus but you can get to it via the SBUS interface.
It needn't cost a massive amount of money and I've got one of these cheap (£7.50) pistol grips to take apart to house something experimental that will work. They can be mounted on the side like that Ursa one with a simple adapter or you could even fit the rosette if you wanted to get fancy.
I haven't got a BMMCC to test it with unfortunately but I'm sure I can get round that when the time comes.

Yes, it was all handheld. I just had a rod mounted on top with a pistol grip handle on the side, and my Marshall VLCD50 monitor on top, with the Cosmicar 12.5mm 1.9 c-mount lens. It was pretty well-balanced and comfortable to operate, though the rod mostly blocks the record button, so from now on I'll just use the same Krasnogorsk-3 pistol grip + shoulder stock + generic Manfrotto 501 QR clamp that I use with my bmpcc.

Looks like the Micro is already going down in price on the second hand market. I got one for under $700. This is my first test, also my first time shooting Raw. Love this little camera. My Micro and Pocket should compliment each other well.
