I've been looking at doing the same thing using a 1/4 20 tripod mount for GoPro attachments. So you can take advantage of the massive amount of mounts available for GoPro's instead of trying to rig stuff for a small camera.

Vs the NX1, no mic socket, no headphone jack, crop in 4K, no 1080/120fps (only at 720p), time limit 15min in 4K, no gamma DR, no luma range setting or black level, but yes it is cheap though for such an amazing image and crop you can get used to.
Stills quality also unbeatable for the price.
I've shot a shootout between the two and it is coming soon in final part of my NX500 review which I decided to resurrect because I rather like the cam for the price. Decided to keep it even though I had the NX1 as it goes in a jacket pocket with a pancake 30mm F2.

But it doesn't beat a £470 Sony A6000 for stills and therein lies the problem, if it's clearly aimed at photographers.
Anyway the £599 Samsung NX500 arguably performs better in 4K mode than the GX8. 2.2x crop on the Samsung, looks like a 2.5x crop on the GX8 from a noisier sensor with suspect colour.

Exactly. Atleast they're listening. Take Olympus. We've voiced our concern about 30p only with the E-M1 from day one. To this date, they haven't done anything for video except pehaps ironically including the following:
'You wanted better video? We're giving you worse!', like... Olympus, why don't you just straight up spit in my face already.

Yes. Did you read the first post?: "Remains in Stand By mode after recording." Just push that button, and you are in video mode until you turn off the camera or push the shutter button (not the video record button). So, a dedicated video mode that still enables you to use the PASM dial - better than the GH3, GH4. You can stay in video mode the whole session shooting clip after clip. It's now a real video camera.

I don't like their ancient forum systems to begin with. Then there's the philosophy...
I think that sets a very healthy climate where people aren't afraid to participate, even if they're just starting out and haven't got the best gear or technical knowledge. That makes for a very fresh and diverse community where discussions can go anywhere and values creativity as much as the technical side of things. To me that really kicks ass indeed.

I hate to say it but who cares about canon? no really. who cares. They are just a company that makes tools, not a religion. This aspiring cinematographer you speak of doesn't hold a soul contract on canon, neither does shooting canon mean anything is going to improve for them all else being the same.
If canon can't keep up, that is nothing to cry over it. If canon does not want to keep up, that is also nothing to cry over. Let canon be canon. They are no longer the king of imaging, and haven't for some time, and arguably they have never been a force in the high end video market either.
These are just tools. use whatever works and just be glad you have choices.
stop the brand fanboysm. it is childish.

If you have MFT glass you like, I would definitely give the Blackmagic cameras a look. I recently upgraded from the GH3 myself and as nice as it was to use, the Pocket's image is in another league.
I wouldn't be worried by specs. There are always going to be new and improved cameras coming out, but if you're still making great images with your old gear, who cares?

YOU think ex machina is medicore.... Some think it is downright awful.... Others think it is pretty good.... Others think it is great. None of those things mean that reviewers are now soft or that people who agree with those people are not creative risk takers.
I get the feeling that Andrew Reid created you in his lab to keep the clickbait going in his absence

I'm always flabbergasted at the amount of cameras he buys, is it for his own use or just for reviews on this site? Must be difficult to keep up and stay focused, all these cameras/reviews/books/news reports etc.
This applies to everybody - full-on camera nerdy-ness completely drains the life out of you and any creativity you have left in you. For the past 2 months I've almost completely ignored camera/gadgety nerdy stuff and focused on creativity entirely. Videos have much improved, and because of this, better opportunities have cropped up.
Every filmmaker gets burnt out. I get burnt out twice a year. You just have to stay focused to keep well and not to overwhelm yourself with unnecessary clutter. Maybe Mr. Reid is decluttering, who knows. Rest is a good sign of gaining some sanity

Dear Ed David, Domestic Abuse (accused domestic abuse) is not on the same level as rape. Not even close. Also bringing this thread back to the top does not bring down the forum, it brings to light your horrific comments, accusations, and topics. They show that you are not here primarily as a filmmaker but as a grandstanding attention seeker, that would rather attack others for their opinions than discuss them.
What do I think of the tape? That Emma is using her rape for personal, political, and financial gain. In that way I suppose she is the voice of her generation. Is rape horrific and terrible, yes it is. Should it be penalized more severely? YES. Should accused parties still be innocent until proven guilty and have the right to their livelihood not being ruined purely on a accusation? YES. Will I watch the video. NO.

While I can appreciate both sides of this discussion, this is a false analogy. It'd be much more like fuzzy saying you don't need a new typewriter, or new pens, or a new computer to write a good script. Which I would agree with, but I would also say that a new piece of writing software could potentially make scriptwriting a faster process, allowing for more creative time. Or that a new typewriter might inspire you to write.

    Hi,
I recently bought the Samsung NX1. Mainly due to this website, so many thanks for that! This camera is a major upgrade for me. I had a bridgecamera of Sony which I really liked (DSC-HX100v). Having the NX1 now, I am really happy about my choice. I can make beautiful photos, but also beautiful movies during my holidays.
I have made a short movie with standard settings, just with the purpose of getting to know the NX1. It's made in The Netherlands, Hoek van holland:
Now I should play more with different settings. I think I should adjust the contrast. Please let me know your first opinion of the movie :-)

I respect different points of view regarding Canon's XC10.
It's unappealing for most pro creators with artistic qualities, like majority of people who read this site.
However, it seems like a good tool IF you practice journalism, where pixel quality comes only after taking the shot itself.
At least that's been my experience in journalism.
Sure there are great photographers and videographers around me who strive to combine both journalism and art,
but these are few and generally very skilled. The vast majority of their jobs assignments en up as "functional"--not artistic--material.
So yes, from a journalist's point of view the XC10 seems attractive because:
    a) It offers the best ergonomics in the business as a run-and-gun instrument
    b ) It's future-proofed with its 4K capability
    c) It won't cost media outlets huge amounts of cash when bought in large quantities for the media desk
(less or just as expensive as a GH4 with a good lens, but with better ergonomics)
    d) It's fixed-lens gives the journalist and media outlets themselves one less thing to worry about
    e) It's a serviceable tool built for functional results, not ultra high quality photographs and video
I can see lots of reporters carrying this thing around as good solution for information-gathering.
Having said that, I would not pay the announced cost for a glorified bridge-cam.
Yet the Canon brand is the most attractive....

iamoui reacted to Cinegain in Panasonic buying advice : LX100 or FZ1000 ?
Well yeah, every option should (although some only ever so briefly) be considered.
But we're not talking price range here per se. It's mostly because they are comparable to a considerate degree. Both are 4K capable hybrids, with built-in stabilization and they share the fact that they're non-interchangeable lens systems with flexible optics. And then you're going to throw a 1080p RAW recording cinema camera in the mix that doesn't even take stills or includes glass with a decent range of coverage and sensitivity. If you're considering the LX100 and the FZ1000 I don't really see how you think the BMPCC fits in there in terms of comparability. Sure; from a price point they're close, but they're different sorts of cameras altogether.
The LX100 is nice as allround everyday camera. Don't add no nothing, just have it with you (perhaps some neutral density filters) and go about your day, always having that little powerhouse with you if the occasion arises. Same goes for the FZ1000, though it's more an allround travel cam with a higher degree of flexibility, but with some added chunkiness to it. Both have their ups and downs. Surely you can use them in a production environment as well. Though perhaps in limited capacity and rather as added specialty to another camera that's being used as main cam.
Sure, you can consider numerous other cameras, like the BMPCC, but then you might as well consider everything... from the GM1, GM5, G6, GX7, GH3, NX500, A5100, A6000, D5300 and D5500 all the way to the GoPro Hero4 BLK or everything upwards from that for that matter, GH4, NX1, A7S, D750, D810, 5DmkIII, 1D C and upwards of that even. And actually. You should. You should consider each and every single camera out there. Might even throw in the E-M5II, don't know why one would, but you can consider it for a brief second. Same goes for the Arri Alexa Mini, although it might be entirely out of your price range (but hey, renting is still a thing). Or hey, forget what I said, just use your smartphone instead!
The BMPCC is great because it's pushable due to its RAW recording possibilities. It's small and easily adaptable within a modular system. Footage looks great. Nice 'n flat, pretty great dynamic range for such a sensor. And... and... em. Hum. Well. Em. What's not to like, really? Well... perhaps... it's not for stills, so forget hybrid use. No built-in stabilization. Bad crop/difficult to get wide shots. Doesn't come with glass, you probably end up buying a couple of primes and having to swap 'em all the time. Not particularly high frame rates. Fills your cards up rather quickly. Goes through batteries like it's nothing. Screen isn't the most ideal. This is not a point-'n-shoot, you need to carefully set-up your shot. No blind use with mode and setting dials and tons of (customizable) buttons, just some navigation buttons. Not to mention it's all rather just basic functionality. Audio handling is poorly done. Oh. And last summer it was on sale with spectacular prizes. People were anticipating a successor soon... or a catch. Nope. Nothing of the kind. But the knowledge of putting down money for a camera, of which the amount months back would've bought you 2 of 'em (with no apparent reason other than the fact they can), that kinda stings, doesn't it? Anyways. In the end... it's great if you use it purposely. But it requires a very different approach than the LX100 or FZ1000.
Listen, I have the BMPCC... but not instead of the LX100 or FZ1000. They simply can't replace one another. That's why I have all three. And the GH4. And the GH2. And the E-M1. And the D5300. And several action cams. Although, surely that's the most ideal situation: not having to choose one to stick with, just have plenty of tools so you can put each tool to each specific use without compromising due to of the drawbacks a single solution would bring with it. Bit tougher if you have to pick one. It will depend on how you use it. Hybrid (stills/video) or not (video only)? Does size and weight constrict you? Do you need an all-in-one solution with a spontaneous point-'n-shoot character? Do you mind swapping out lenses and rigging your gear? How are you going to handle power supply? Are you going to use it in a production environment? Quality requirements? Gradeability? Need for slowmotion? Storage/archiving? Would you need specific system requirements for quick editting turnarounds? There's a lot that can make you go one way or another. There isn't a universal solution that meets the requirements of all shooters out there. Pick something that suits your individual needs the best... which can be any camera, really... just not sure if you want to take a too long look at the BMPCC, when you were thinking a LX100 / FZ1000 would nicely fit in your way of shooting. They might be similar at initial purchase, but are pretty much worlds apart. And with the BMPCC you're not even there yet after getting the camera itself...
