Jonpais! Love the SOOC look with the 50-140 :)!

I just got my x-t2 and am starting to shoot a little with it.  I have to say it is excellent!  I need to look at other lenses for lowlight options.
Could you take some video shots and night and indoors with limited light?
I recently invested in a c100 II because I'd like to do some video/doc. work for my students and myself but I am having major buyer's remorse now that I see how great of an image x-t2 is achieving.  I'm actually strongly considering selling my c100 II and 24-105 with less than 2 hours of recording time.

jasonmillard81 got a reaction from odie in 1080 vs. 4K: What is REALLY necessary?
The following conversation gave me pause and I am hoping to get a few questions answered by more knowledgeable individuals:

One of the topics discussed was how these DPs feel that are sort of forced to use digital and many long for the days of film.  In addition they seem to acknowledge the necessity to keep up with the 4K, 6K, and 8K race but that sometimes the preferable image is of a much lower resolution and they spend time trying to achieve that by softening the image up etc. as they (maybe Deakins) feel that the audience finds the optimal image to not be so "realistic".

I'm curious on what everyone's opinions are.  If one isn't doing paid work and 4K+ aren't demanded then you still get away with investing in a new product that is 1080P if the image is currently seen as not only acceptable but desirable?

Good points for 4K I like the analysis.

Do do you think on a tv the average person would prefer the nx1 or a7s image versus the image from a c100 ?
my own inquiry into this was the c100 was chosen 100% of the time.
A few said of the 4K cameras I mentioned "wow that's sharp, pretty cool" but the color rendition of c100 was desired above even the fs5/fs7 image.
So if 4K seems to be desirable for more than image does than then mean a 1dxii is more desirable than a c100 in the same price point?
    just curious, I'm learning here

I just made a surprising discovery with my 23mm WR. Turning the focus ring at different speeds does not affect the distance the focus travels. This is highly unusual for a fly-by-wire lens. What other lenses act like this? My 18-55mm and 35mm f1.4 don't.

Thanks but do you think you could do it a bit more scientifically?
So indoors, filming something that's thin and vertically long. Like another tripod or a door frame. Make sure the shutter is at 180 degrees. Do 3 videos. One without the VPB attached, one with it attached and one with it attached plus Boost mode turned on. You might find you can get a more consistant pan by just whipping as fast as you can.  Since the VPB juices the camera up a bit more, I believe it might increase the readout speed. It might also explain why Cinema5d found the rolling shutter to be significantly better than the A7S whilst the DVXUser guy found it to be very similar.

Looking to Netflix to save cinema... They have picked up the Blade Runner style sci-fi shot by Bowie's son Duncan Jones, set in Berlin in 2050 called Mute.
And more stuff good coming out soon.
As for 2016... I am voting 5D Mark IV!

Dave has done a great job matching colour in this.
1D X Mark II is a bit softer out of the box, as it doesn't have any digital sharpening in-camera when it is turned all the way down.

Hey Shawn, the 1DX II 4K is soft. It's ok, it looks great! Even the GH4 4K has more detail, however the 1DX II has much better color control and the image looks more organic. To get full detail 4K we need an 8K sensor and good downsampling to prevent aliasing (Nyquist)...

The MTFs (http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/x/fujinon_lens_xf56mmf12_r/specifications/) show that it's a very good lens already wide open. The optical design is interesting too.
I would say that most Fuji lenses are very good wide open and get incredibly sharp stopped down.
For me personally Fuji lenses have reached the point, where I don't use the aperture for sharpness control but only for depth of field. There is always enough sharpness.

There are tripods, monopods, feet (that can walk the distance and use a wider lens!). I am surprised that suddenly IBIS and gimbals became a necessity. Like the a7sii, all of a sudden people prefer shooting in absolute darkness!
I am not against IBIS/GIMBALS/HIGH ISO SENSORS, but there are ways working around limitations. After 18 years of pro work, this year was the first to use A7sII and Ronin, great, but only for 3 occasions (2 the A7sii and 1 the Ronin).

Classic Chrome is by far my favorite film simulation but yes Pro Neg Std is the flattest. Here is a good run-down of the color science behind each mode:

    Looks great jonpais!!!!
    a few questions/points:

    1. His skin has a bit of added green. Is that more of a white balance adjustment or post CC?
    2. Highlights are blown out, wonder if pro neg would help recover those.
    3.  Would be curious to hear what a shotgun mic in the hot shoe directly into camera sounds like for interviews.

Well done and no visible noise for 6400! If you get a chance to do 6400+ at night that would be interesting to see.

    Cheers!

couldn't agree more. my C100 is most often found sitting on it's shelf, until i get a call like a couple weeks ago to shoot a corporate docu, and in 2 days of use it already paid for itself.  no way would i have been able to do the things i did with the XT2. Canon Log, Zebras, ND filters, the insane battery life (a full day of shoot with ONE charge) and yes the killer feature: dual pixel AF. Not to mention the ergonomics and confidence you get by having such pro equipment.
that being said if you're an amateur/enthusiast, maybe C100ii is overkill. certainly not the camera i'd bring on the street, on vacation or kids soccer game..

Haha I wish I had your time, my 1 year old daughter leaves me close to none Right now I have no reason to buy the 16-55 as I have very little experience with the kit lens, I bought it 2 weeks ago. But who doesn't love fixed aperture zooms... so I wanted to buy the ND filter for the largest lens I might buy in the future. I come from Nikon so I have no Fuji glass at all, and I want to be prepared.

With an attitude like yours you are already miles ahead of many an online expert (particularly YouTube). The amount of critical people who do so from a position under a bridge far outweighs those who actually want to help - when you go and look for their work, it simply doesn't exist or is abysmal. On the other hand there are people who cannot even take constructive criticism and think that everybody is out to get them. They then go onto your channel and go on a dislike rampage lol.
Then you have the fanboys, which is a whole different level of nastiness.
Once the flow of a finished project becomes foremost in your mind when you actually begin to shoot, everything will merge into one and become an absolute joy. You will be anticipating shots before they happen and have an idea of your cuts, music and the whole story before you even get to the venue. After a while you will have a base template for every genre of shooting you can think of, affording you time to be more adventurous once you have all the bare bones on your memory card.

Wow!  I am really thankful for the feedback.  No need to preface it with apologies.

I see there are two main arguments:
    1. Composition/Movement
    2. Editing/Stylistic Choices

And yet I have been focusing on the trees instead of the forest (settings, etc.)
I will look to do the following the next sports edit:
    A. Be purposeful in the composition and choose clips that accentuate the storyline (6 min to 2 min)
    B. Use a storyboard that has a beginning, middle (crescendo), end
    C. Expose properly prior to shooting or at least grade for proper exposure + higher shutter speed/FPS

I'll give a second go at it and report back.  Thanks for being helpful and look forward to more improvements.
I still, however, am concerned that I'm not getting the best detail/sharpness or color from my current video/settings and any advice on that front would be greatly appreciated.

When you do that, you'll be so far ahead of other content creators, you'll be amazed.  Get into the nitty gritty of crafting the stuff, enjoy that aspect of it.  That's where the magic happens.  Honestly, when done right, it really is like a magic trick.  It's the illusion of effortlessness.

Yes I do have the MKII. The DPAF is amazing. If I'm using it handheld I'll use the Canon 17-55, or 24-105. It's very liberating to use this camera b/c the native battery will run for hours, the SD cards will run for hours, it's rock solid but lightweight, the ISO range is super wide. It really does just get out of the way and let you shoot.
