Adobe Camera Raw doesn't indicate the bit depth. In the lower part of the screen you see the workflow settings, it is probably at 8 bit by default. That is just the setting used to import the image into Photoshop. You can click it and change it to 16 bit. If you do, the converted raw will be opened as a 16 bit file in photoshop and you can export it to 16 bit tiff for example.

Its funny that everyone screams "workflow" problems from the get-go.  Not too long ago we were capturing everything in real-time from tape... remember??  My film-school experience was that we shot on 16mm - had to get it processed overnight (while praying that your exposure readings were actually OK so you wouldn't have messed up footage) and then we edited on pre-final cut pro systems... meaning Steinbeck machines with white gloves and scotch tape and razor blades... And I'm not even old!!

In 2006 we were so impressed when we began producing tv with a big production company that had a TERABYTE!! of storage.

In my estimation - the color on this footage is BEAUTIFUL! - A drastic, marked difference that any non-pro can easily see.  Honestly, this stuff makes me want to buy a 5D3.  An option I would absolutely not have considered two weeks ago.

    1. I bet it runs a trace cooler if anything.
    2. Even if it did eventually do something (and I don't see how it would anymore than using Liveview a lot would) look at the price of it!

Nope you are making it two times too scary :) . It's about 3.5MB and around 4.4GB per minute. Still yikes of course though.

    The answer is NO.

Because of the way ML's module work, the Digic processor is actually doing less work by writing RAW than it does by writing H.264.

H.264 requires a lot of downsampling, up-sampling and compressing. RAW is a "straight file save from sensor to card" no processing in between. Therefore, expect the camera to actually consume less power when shooting RAW with no overheating issues!

What you do not know is that this has been in the works for months. ML already has working compiles of the software that allows them to write to exFAT formatted cards. Many users have already implemented it.

Breaking the 4GB limit is fairly easy. The hard part was RAW. Now, it turns out that RAW may, in fact, be better for the camera than H.264 because incredibly, Digic uses less power to write RAW than it does to write H.264 - and it's all done without overheating the camera!

This is a testament to the fact that these cameras were meant to be "RAW war machines" and it implies that h.264 was basically the product of Canon's market segmentation strategy - Low-end users, ProSumer users and High-end users - different price points for different users.

All-in-all, this is bound to change everything. Expect, by this time next year that RAW will be the film standard in the industry. And get this, I'm going to go even further and predict that this will also greatly impact the TV manufacturing industry. With 4K becoming standard, you can bet that TV manufacturers and broadcasters will follow suit in order to accomodate the new, better content- expect 4K TVs to start popping up everywhere . . .

    Let's wait and see.

I really need to get back to Berlin tomorrow and compare to the Blackmagic.

I honesty think I prefer this image though.

Blackmagic is great but this - wow - it is silky smooth, much cleaner detail, no false detail or micro moire, hardly any noise at all. And still early dev code!

The sensor isn't doing any additional work.  It's generating this information already.  What's happening here is that work isn't being wasted, disappearing into the ether, it's being diverted to the CF.  It's generating this image and then destroying it, in stock form.

The sensor doesn't handle I/O.  I would be really surprised if this isn't actually less work than the heavy lifting of even the crummy MP4 encoding it was doing on the fly, in stock form.  It wouldn't shock me if the camera ran cooler.  This is an I/O bound task more than a processor bound task.

I wonder which part of the "plan" was to lose both their pro/ama video film market to Black Magic?
