  1. It may not work with larger diameter anamorphic lenses. I messaged them today it only supports up to 71mm. However im sure i could probably jimmy rig something with adapters that would work.

Regardless, the focus module definitely looks interesting. I may pick this up if anything to play with.

*edit - Nevermind just saw the video. Unfortunate it would not work with a La7200 it looks slick like all one unit once put together. I had assumed it was like their VM module, they posted a link to the assembly video and I cant view it.

Vimeo is well, lets just say I wont ever go through them.

Anyways, I wonder if you could use it behind or in between the two main Panasonic Lens elements.. hmm Ill have to look into it.

  2. Sorry I haven't stayed in touch with this. (A request that EOSHD is integrated into tapatalk? XD)

In any case I have a full writeup here of something that does in fact work and the first results look most promising. I posted it on Facebook originally however here it is.

Ill stick this in there right away, WTB, old lenses, broken or parts, good glass.

Ill post a summary in the top post

Private Message me please with any offers.

    1. SUCCESS
This is possible and for not all that much if you are a bit of do it yourselfer. - Pictures attached (taken with Canon FD F1.8)
    - JPGS are Flat color profile Cinema Technicolor and settings are in links attached at bottom to the actual files.
    • 1st picture full open f22
    • 2nd picture f8
    • 3rd a usable f2.8
    • 4th f2.8
-(Im going to be looking into purchase methods as well)

    2. Quick update for anyone new but now interested. The original post regarded my disbelief that you cannot cheaply acquire a canon FD to EF adapter with infinity focus.

    0f23h61.jpg

I experimented a bit with using an old 28-80mm Canon EF (it was cheap and already broken) Took it apart, the back lensing element was cut out of the plastic and dremeled down to fit (Did a little too much its a bit loose couldn't get it to the exact size. It is held in with tape for now, I have access to a 3d printer so this shouldnt be an issue) and placed it in a cheap FD to EF adapter right where the lens element goes.

I would say resounding success so far - Achieved a focus distance at f22 of at least 3, 3.5ft shorter the smaller aperture, however you can judge for yourself.

    See main post for images.

Therefore.... I am looking to buy anyones old broken but good glass lenses to try different size back lensing elements and see which works the best.

List (I will update as I accept offers)
    - 35mm
    - 50mm
    - 85mm (or something like that)
    - 135mm (seems to be the most common old lens style

    Measurements for lens plane element.
    - 20-26mm

The inner front diameter of the cheap element I have is approximately 26mm. That should work in this instance with enough space for shims or 3d printed holder.

In addition: Canon glass preferably. Hey lets keep it in the family if we can.
I would like to get more scientific with this. If anyones knows where I can get a cheap test target (send me a link) or if anyone would be willing to donate for the case

Thank you everyone and anyone considering helping out.

Link to drive folder. (Anyone searching in the future message me and ill update it if I can to a permanent one.)
  3. We all know the cheap ones. Simple mount with a really bad optic.

Is there no way at all to make or create an adapter for less than the canon telephoto original adapter at around $699

I just can't believe this is so.

I mean a simple telephoto adapter with a secondary achromatic element behind it ought to work to clean up and telephoto the image enough for an FD to EF adapter.

Is it just that difficult to get decent glass for a good price?

    Overview

I am attempting to create and research an FD to EF adapter that does not have horribly unusable chromatic aberration.

Testing including test shots at different apertures and comparison in lightroom. I will be publishing my findings here and possibly flickr.

If you are interested message me, I would love to build a team willing to research and experiment with the project. Otherwise follow along, feel free to try it yourself and post your findings or send them to me directly if you like.

Im not looking to profit here. Feel free to learn from what i'm doing here and do so yourself, id just appreciate credit. While mass manufacture is an option, I currently dont have the infrastructure to support it within my company. Id rather focus more on taking pictures and video than manufacture profit although if the opportunity presents itself I may jump at it.

    Canon 50mm f1.8 FD - Testing lens

    • 3d printer for light manufacturing.
    • preliminary dioptric research done
    • measurements of cheap fd adapter recorded

    Update - 09-15

    1. Nominal Success in adapting rear lensing element from Canon 28-80mm f2.8 wide angle telephoto lens
    2. Effective focus distance 2-3 feet depending on fstop (f2.8-f22 examples below)

Spurned by this success I am looking for lenses, broken, as is, no longer working etc.

    • 35mm
    • 50mm
    • 85mm
    • 135mm

Canon preferably, I mean lets keep it in the family if possible.

*note - results gained so far are with the Canon 28-80mm. Going to start work with fixed lenses and if needed ill use telescopic.

    General Progress

    Completed

    1. Successs! It works, this should be possible for less than the old Canon FD to EF adapter
    2. There should be no reason this cant be done cheaply either for other lenses or simply just the FD lenses without significant chromatic aberration
    3. Initial test pictures and examination in lightroom (I felt that CaptureOne was a bit cheating since their sharpening algorithms are so good)

    To Do

--Find a rear lensing optic that fits

        Acquire Lenses

  4. Ive been looking for a particular piece to customize my rig. I dont know if it exists so I figured i'd post here in case anyone has run across it.

Basically it connects 2 15mm rods in parallel on the top and bottom. Except the second set of 15mm rods I need it to swivel. So probably two 15mm rod pieces with swivel action so it can be placed at different degrees of angle.

    Basically like this item.

    http://store.redrockmicro.com/Catalog/mountinggear/microMount

Except with the right ring parallel to the left and able to rotate to a 45 degree angle.

Im trying to mount my vmount battery plate at a 45 Degree angle from the back of the rig on 15mm rods.

Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Edit* found this as a better example.

    http://www.amazon.com/Lanparte-Battery-Internal-Splitter-External/dp/B00ARABA9I/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1393126744&sr=1-1&keywords=lanparte

Basically what this does but I already have the plate and I want an additional set of 15mm rods parallel to the plate itself.

  5. Hey I figured i'd drop this here if anyone was interested.

Im selling my Redrock Micro Black Ultracage Professional DSLR mounting on ebay here.

Selling for 15% less than retail plus HDMI wireLock accessory included.

Great condition, however I dont have a need for it since I recently purchased a BlackMagic Cinema Camera.

    Thanks in advance!

  6. Ive been experimenting for a while with the Panasonic LA7200. I just cant seem to cut down on the edge blurring with it.

I shot this with a Canon 5d Mark III with 85mm L1.2 and the edge blurring is still very evident. I had hoped the telephoto of the 85mm would help but it did not seem to.

However I've seen videos of people using the La7200 with Canon EOS 5d Mark II full frame with none of the edge blurring. Really been trying to figure this out, does anyone have any suggestions?

Maybe its just not noticeable here.

  7. Its not to stop everyone from trying just it would just be nice if people would just stop cutting corners and only going for the superficial reasons for shooting anamorphic. Its not something anyone should jump into, I think its amazing that this method has resurfaced after being a work around to get more detail on the film negative. In doing so we got amazing things like the horizontal flares and oval bokeh. Other things like getting a wide and tele feel in the same lens resulting in a more intimate image to your viewer. Wides often alienate the viewer and anamorphic kinda solves this along with tons of character.

Anyways these are the reasons why slrmagic, letus and this dont really interest me. My thoughts on this set up are yes it looks like the Panasonic adapter, it also sufferes from the terrible edges and awful distortion even at longer focal lengths. The flares look ok but the lens was mounted lopsided so it wasnt very..horizontal. and lastly being a 1.33X I guess is that the bokeh is not very great. For 2k there are plenty of great deals to be had that have more character and better aesthetics.

I know they are all a lot more expensive but having an iscorama I may be a bit spoiled. Also having used a wonderful Lomo I just cant see using anything less. its not apples to apples or anything but compare what you are trying to do with the Girl and a gun lens tests of the hawk 74 series lenses. Not saying I want that for 2k but if you can even reproduce 10% of that you would have my attention.

Yes, yes you are spoiled. I was looking for an Isco and I couldn't find one when I was willing to spend upwards 8000 on one just to get my hands on one and it simply could not be found at the time. I had to settle on a Panasonic LA7200 because that's the only thing I could find anywhere in a timely manner.

Forget budgets, even on a time crunch you can't get your hands on decent ones. Consider yourself lucky.
  8. Still looking for a decent one. Havent seen any recent postings for a larger size 0.5 or anything of the like for a while.

I got a +0.5 Tokina but i underestimated the size it was only 52mm too small. Far too small get tons of vignetting but whats in focus is nice and sharp for my panasonic LA7200

With all the fuss about the LA7200 and problems it has been thinking of getting something else entirely. I dont really know yet.

  9. Getting some help on this. Never used AutoCAD, have the general idea down just gotta work with the program a bit to get it working right.

Friend of mine brings over his 3d printer today. Going to do a few mockups maybe put it together in pieces instead of one giant model. Wish me luck.

  10. Oh that's just if I wanted a special dual focus. I had a secondary idea I was banging around on a double focus rig using 15mm rods to allow any anamorphic to focus when the taking lens focuses.

Also someone pointed out that 115mm is just around the right size for a 4.5" filter. Even though its quite large. Hmm
  11. First snag, wanted to make the entirety of the front optic enclosed in the housing. So it would be easy to attach a filter.

Well that was the wrong choice. The diameter of the front enclosure would have to be 115mm diameter. Huge, in any case.

Should I make this floating inside the enclosure? Or should i have it stick out where it can move more freely since the odds of finding a 115mm filter is not really that high?

In which case i would conform it to a square front, again.

  12. Ok so there was a previous forum thread regarding a rehousing project for the LA7200.

Based off the video there, I have had this design in my mind for my own rehousing project and improvements as well for close focus and/or marrying the LA7200 with a manual focus lens and making an all in one lens solution for the Canon 5d Mark III.

Progress is starting off well. Getting the hang of AutoCAD and designing as such.

I am planning on first prototyping with a 3d printer I have access to then going to a further manufacturing step from there. Not trying to get too ahead of myself however you can keep track of the progress and id appreciate comments or suggestions regardless as I try to work this out.

    Steps:

    • Design model in AutoCad --- 15%
    • Port model into Google Sketchup
    • 3D print prototype
    • Test Prototype
    • Test again....
    • Make changes...
    • Probably test again....
    • Use AutoCad model for CNC machining
    • Produce final model.

    Planned features...

    • Close Focus and far focus at a twist of the ring.
    • Easy to handle enclosure
    • Focus ring easy lens adjustment
    • Standard housing to fit Cokin P or other diopters much easier

    Possible features

    • 15mm rail mount auto adjusting focus solution
    • Housing combined with Aperture adjustor on a Canon FD manual Lens
    • Direct connection to the 5d Mark III basically making it a hack lens using a custom EF mount or 72mm thread
    • AF confirm chip? (not a bad idea)
    • All the lens flares! (ALL THE LENS FLARES!) Er multicoating removal. Something like that.

Close to exact Measurements via caliper - (short of cutting the existing enclosure in half. I could not get the measurements exactly for how close the back and front lens elements are in terms of distance)

    Front Element - Concave

    Width: 84.90mm

    Height: 72.96mm

    Depth: 16.25mm

    Rear Element - Convex

    Width: 52.96mm

    Height: 40.99mm

    Depth: 4.13mm

Front Element Holder depth - 17.82mm

    Outer Hood Depth - 13.14mm

Approx 23.8mm distance between the two lenses. (not entirely sure on this. Like I said, cant figure it out unless i cut the thing in half and really I want to be able to use it until the enclosure is finished at least)

All in all, working pretty well so far. Got the elements into AutoCad, and its time to start designing the enclosure for it.

    Screen-Shot-2013-07-15-at-3.59.16-AM.png

  13. Oh yeah and i did mean the video. Didnt get a chance to look at the sketches.

I figure if you could make a rehousing thats accessible for most people, the LA7200 is fairly common anamorphic. So it should be more accessible in general to more people.

  14. Yeah same here, I have a caliper, going to take some measurements and draw up something in Autocad. Prototype fabrication should be easy, friend of mine has a 3d printer so I can get the whole thing made in short order. From there, probably going to look at CNC machining and milling. Been wanting to do this rehousing for a while. The LA7200 is nice, with a diopter im going to see how it affects the sharpness ive heard it can really make it sing.

That being said I also had an idea to take an old Canon FD mount lens and mounting it to the housing. Repurpose the shutter with the anamorphic and connect it via the 72mm mount directly to my 5d Mark III and see how that goes as a separate complete aperture controlled lens.

Got the idea in my head just gotta get it out into the real world.
