1tkman reacted to Sebastien Farges in 4K compact camera LX100 does 3:2 anamorphic baby Hypergonar with SLR Magic Rangefinder
I'm happy having managed building a system for using my baby anamorphic on a 4K compact camera. I used an accessory tube made for the Canon G7 and managed to screw it on the bayonet system of the LX100. then I screwed another tube on it to allowed the zoom going at it's end of it's range (84mm in 4K, because it's vignetting below), then the Redstan clamp for my baby Hypergonar, and finally the SLRMagic Rangefinder focus system, and here we go !
For me the result is very promising ! What do you think ?
camera : Panasonic DMC-LX100 on tele zoom position (84mm) always at it's full aperture (f2.8 in tele position)
3:2 4K 25p photo mode exported in UHD
baby Hypergonar anamorphic 1.75x lens
SLR Magic Rangefinder focus system
no color correction except slight upper whites on 3 clips
-5 personnal color settings
Howa ND 32 filter
music : The Cure
Thanks to the students from Master, Nina, Céline and Charles, Arnaud and Tchie-Kung

1tkman reacted to j_one in The importance of lens stabalisation with a gimbal?
It isn't a MUST if you are experienced with shooting with gimbals, electronic or not (though know the difference!). It helps to have IS in most cases, but I've even found myself turning off lens/sensor IS for certain steadicam motions due to jitters or complete jumps in motion. Something to consider. A well balanced camera+lens with moderate weight within the steadicam system (and a tiny bit of digital stabilization if needed for some troublesome clips) can go a long way, so don't be afraid of lenses without IS if you're finding yourself in a corner with options!

1tkman reacted to DPStewart in Why do I like the look of the Canon 1D C and Blackmagic Micro Cinema so much than the Ursa, F55, FS7, and C300 mark ii?
Remember folks that LENS choice has a HUGE impact.
The 4k cameras can very easily suffer from TOO sharp an image. That's one reason the NX1 usually dosn't look nearly as smooth as the 1DC or the BMPCC. The Samsung lenses can be extremely sharp.
Motion cadence is unique to each camera maker usually.
Some folks can see the difference, others can't.
If you ask enough people, the Blackmagic Cinema and Pocket cameras frequently rank very high, as do the Canons if they are shooting an all I-Frame codec
Having seen many test comparisons done, I can tell you this - you'd be shocked by how similar many cameras can look when you put the exact same lens on them and shoot the exact same scene.

Now seeing the blackmagic micro camera in the "micro" spot - that looks really beautiful and smooth as well and sharp - for some reasons these cameras are getting it right. I think the blackmagic cinema pocket is better than the 1d c, cause of raw and higher frame rates.
This may one amazing little $1k camera.

Hardly think Blackmagic Pocket Camera price or release date was too much affected by the screen they put in it.
Stripping down the Micro, based around same sensor, probably pays for the redesign and faster processor for 60fps.

Plus you'd be forced to pay for those components, even if you don't need them. With BM, you can shoot as stripped down or as rigged up as you want.

Yeah, and the best part is that you get both.

I agree as of February 2016. I'm starting to wonder though. Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 is shooting with the Weapon, and I know alot of big budget movies will follow suit. I think in a few years the hyper-realistic look will be accepted and requested. Of course there will be alot of people who are nostalgic and want the old film look. Most likely myself included. Curious to see what the "standard" will be in 2020.

Un-foogin-believable.
The rendering of the smoke was like nothing I've seen before - looked like it was going to come right out of my screen.
This 8k thing is a whole new world for Documentaries, educational, and other types of super-realism stuff.
But I'm becoming more convinced than ever that 4k is the cutoff for "Movies". It's just too sharp and it starts hurting the feel of the experience instead of helping.
In fact the 2.8k Alexa or even the 2.5k Blackmagic Cinema Camera are about all I'd want to deal with if the intention is something that "looks like a movie".
But it's interesting - we now have cameras so advanced that they are creating new genres. That's fantastic.
And the ability of 5k, 6k, and 8k to convey a realistic experience is a gift to Humanity. As a teaching and world-sharing tool there has never been anything like it before.
There is very much a parallel in Music recording. - Audio technology has advanced just like video technology has, but when the audio you want to make is MUSIC then the new advanced tech sounds 'worse' and everybody reaches for "tube this" and "tube that" and "tube emulators"... all that DEGRADES the audio - but it does it in a very specific way that just so happens to sound "better" to most people in the context of songs.
So "movie" cameras will be the ones that render a technically less advanced image - but one that is far more suited to the particular application of creating a "movie".
Interesting times.

Looks beautiful... Colour, contrast, detail, DR and general IQ all have a touch of magic. Really like it.
The IMAX shooters are gonna love it!

I've seen people here (Andrew perhaps?) in the forum recommend using the "autumn leaves" picture profile. Might be what you're thinking of.

Teal/Orange is very popular right now, but it actually has been used for a long time. It adds the ultimate in color contrast with orange hues for skin and teal hues for backgrounds/shadows. Another reason it's effective is that blue in a background creates the illusion of distance when orange/red is in the foreground. If you reverse it, and have orange/red in the background with a blue/teal foreground the distance appears shorter.

I often find that the light controls in front of a light fixture are more important than the fixture itself.
There is a barndoor that is designed to fit directly onto those R40 photoflood bulbs. They came out decades ago and were part of the original Lowel-Light. I don't think that they are made anymore, but you might be able to find them used in kits, as kits of that Lowel-Light are included on almost every large truck. I have also seen them employed a lot in department store window displays using track lighting with R40 photofloods.

1tkman reacted to AaronChicago in Revival of super 8 film ?
I actually think it's genius what Kodak is doing. They're self aware of their legacy. Instead of competing for an overcrowded digital sensor market, they start with entry level film in hopes to spark a new generation of film users. I could see them rolling out this service to 16mm and 35mm in the future.

1tkman reacted to teddoman in Zoom H1 , Tascam DR 22, 40 Audio Recorder
The smartphone idea might not work for me. Looking at mics on B&H's awesome website, I could see that the mid-range $60 lav mics require phantom power through the mic jack, and unlike the recorders, smartphones don't provide any phantom power through their mic jacks.
I'm def learning that preamp is in the secret sauce. My Rode Videomic has zero preamp, and apparently part of the trick with AGC is to preamplify the signal so that the camera's AGC doesn't try to boost the signal because it'll also boost the noise...creating the low hiss I hear all the time despite turning on the high pass filter. Apparently this is the trick on the Rode Videopro microphone. It preamps the signal before it ever reaches the camera, which helps trick the in camera AGC into not trying to boost the sound.
But that's really just a hack. Without being handicapped by a camera's AGC, a better strategy seems like a recorder with decent microphone + good preamp + manual gain control + lossless recording format.
This review and this review were helpful because of the commentary on the quality of the preamps in various under $400 recorders. Now all I need to do is find the right microphone preamp recorder combo as my first upgrade from a Rode Videomic without dropping $3K on a Sound Devices 552

At the very beginning, when the old-school Star Wars logo and graphics appeared... everyone at the IMAX theater cheered and clapped!
Wonderful movie, surprisingly funny.

Its a simple video, well graded, well shot, captures the essence of the place, so I dont see anything wrong with it.
Kinda makes me wanna go to Cuba and give it a shot ! I've been to Venezuela, which has a similar "vibe", but back then I didnt film :/

SEMI SPOILER
Kylo Ren is a great new villain. Nothing like him before in Star Wars. Temper tantrums with a light saber. Anakin had moments but his were more anger. Kylo's were more uncontrolled and wild. So stoked to see what Rian Johnson does with him.

1tkman reacted to The Chris in Poll... STARWARS WILL BE RUBBISH?
I liked it too, not as overly JJ as those Star Trek movies, but the whip pans and shallow DOF quick zooms are as played as the flares, so glad he's not doing the next one. My only real complaints is the plot was pretty transparent, nothing at all was surprising. Second, it's basically a remake of the original, but I get it, they're bridging the old with the new. Lastly, they changed the pitch of the blasters and put too much bass in the light sabers, they sound funny. I watched Empire and Jedi earlier in the week, I think they should have kept the same sounds.
I agree with others, Kylo Ren is badass, a much darker dark side. Love it.
Saw it in a packed theater, every time one of the old favorites appeared on screen the place erupted in cheers, a cool moviegoing experience.
