One day I think Sony will buy Nikon and ultimately control RED's product line.

    This now seems very likely.

I'm not really interested in Z mount lenses, and have been looking towards Canon for any future camera upgrade but now I may have to start looking toward Nikon. Since I am only interested in Raw or ProRes acquisition, it'll be very interesting to see how this affects Canon going forward.

Right? This is such a wildcard change in the industry.

I was planning to switch to an R5 and R5C combo this year for Canon's 28-70MM f/2 zoom.

Now I'm going to wait and see what happens. I own no mirrorless glass so I have no bias, I'll choose whatever platform that suits me.

  3. Sorta hijacking this thread but it is relevant:

Must've been living under a rock, Sony discontinued the FS5M2.

    RIP

Awesome camera to keep an eye out for used, and Atomos effectively prolonged these cameras forever with the Ninja V.

I fucking love S35-sized sensors. Allows you to shoot on vintage and tiny glass. Add a focal reducer and you have almost full frame.

Of course you need to rig the fuck out of this camera to get good image quality. Good camera to own for low budget, controlled shoots.

    RED who?

Yeah, this is super frustrating. BRAW is great but Blackmagic doesn't (yet) offer the sensor-in-a-box I need.

And looks like we won't be ever be getting internal ProRes RAW due to RED.

I bought a Ninja V+ recently. It's great. But it is something you need to rig, power and wire; one more potential point of failure that can **** a shoot.

  5. @And1 Make sure you can return the camera if not satisfied or do some extensive tests; some Blackmagic sensors exhibit excessive FPN or have other issues (crosshatching, color clipping, etc.)

The UM4.6k is a great but I personally would not buy a used Blackmagic camera (unless it’s from a chain.)

  6. I'm glad you shared this with us @Andrew Reid.

eBay is seriously fucked. Some of its employees just got jail time for: "sending threatening messages and deliveries of live cockroaches, a funeral wreath, and a bloody pig mask" to a couple running a website that wrote critical articles about eBay. On orders from executives no less.

  7. @Django

FS7 def has the advantage if you want to shoot almost full frame for cheap. Basically the only reason I'm still shooting on FS5s... S35 out of the box, or pop on a metabones for 1.07x crop.

There's (2?) FS7M2 on ebay for 4k. Nothing included but the locking e-mount is awesome. Such a pain in the ass to rig a lens to not move when using a focus motor or follow focus. eND is nice to have too.

FS5/FS7 is still the only goldilocks body available IMHO: FF/S35, SDI, RAW, 4K120.

  8. I probably could’ve bought a C200(B) due to how many times I rented them in 2019.

Awesome, awesome camera slapped with typical Canon bullshit, such as: 10-bit ONLY for 60fps, 12-bit ONLY for 24-30fps.

Why??? Let me fucking choose 10-bit RAW for lower framerates if I want.

I instead own a FS5 and two FS5MKIIs; worse autofocus, worse colour... but I get my choice of codec and bitrate. 120fps 4K is nice to have too.

tl;dr not holding my breath for a great improvement, but I’ll probably use one, especially if they go RF mount as a focal reducer would become viable

  9. I’m seriously considering getting an R5 with an RF 28-70mm f/2 to shoot raw. Still can’t walk into a retailer to shoot some tests and I don’t feel like renting one.

I almost bought a C200 until I actually tested it and found some FPN when shooting underexposed in clothing which made me reconsider.

I hope someone rehouses that lens for proper manual focus one day.

  10. @TomTheDP Yes. I remember the OG Fairchild sensor being fairly bad. I believe I shot RAW at all times with my ISO set to 200.

800 or 1600? Fugget About It!! Unless you shot to ProRes, you'd get FPN in a black t-shirt, even with middle gray @ 40 IRE or whatever the fuck it was.

I can personally attest to the following Blackmagic cameras having FPN, amongst a range of other issues:

    • Cinema Camera
    • Production Camera 4K (oh my god, what a steaming pile of ****)
    • Pocket Cinema Camera
    • Pocket Cinema 4K
    • Micro Cinema Camera
    • URSA Mini 4.6K
    • URSA Mini Pro 4.6K

But then so does the Canon C200, Sony FS700, FS5 and FS7, when shooting RAW.

The closer your get to the sensor, the uglier it gets.

Not a big deal usually, just need to test the fuck out of your camera before shooting anything serious. Find out the sensor flaws, find a work around or just avoid that scenario.

  11. lol @ the "pro" moniker, BMD slipping, they're letting their media people name shit:

    • No SDI, only unreliable HMDI
    • No wifi video, no 3rd party/1st party module for wireless video
    • No locking lens mount
    • No interchangeable lens mounts
    • No recorder slot for SSD/nvme media, only unreliable USB-C

Very cool. Photo body (fuck ergonomic ENG/camcorder designs) with a tilt screen and shitty NDs. I'm glad we're getting these iterative changes, moar products pls! I love when BMD stretches their staff thin, so we get less firmware fixes and improvements.

And more products means more parts to house. So when your camera dies like a year after warranty, Blackmagic will tell you SOoL, we no repair.

  12. If size and cost aren't limiting factors, I'd go steadicam vest+arm & gimbal.

Balancing a gimbal is easier than a steadicam. Steadicam arm+vest eliminate some of the fatigue and helps smooth out z-axis bounce.

😄 you could even be as cool as this guy 👇🏽... slapping on a monitor, with no wires or batteries... hauling 15lbs of gear to stabilize a heavy ass sony A6XXX. lmfao wtf is even going on in this pic?! 🤣

  13. Believe it or not, I don't have any 1/4-20 sized gear on hand. This demos the versatility of a gobo head really well actually. Here's a Sony a6500 with a just a hardware store 1/4-20 machine bolt screw:

There are baby pins with your selection of thread, male of female. Mine is all 3/8 unfortunately, but should give you an idea of what you can do:

  14. I'm considering picking up an ARM Mac and Atomos Shogun 7 for what I assume is currently the best exprience for ProRes RAW.

Currently shooting CDNG with a FS5II to an Odyssey 7Q and editing on PC with DaVinci Resolve. It's... OK.

Please chime in if you're editing ProRes RAW on the new ARM Macs! I would love to hear your thoughts, good and bad. 🙂

@Oliver Daniel any updates on switching to the ARM mac?
