  1. Nikon 1 is the only mirrorless camera that could shoot 30pfs (for 1 second) and 60fps (for 0.5 second). Nikon 800, Canon Mark III, and the 1DX are not mirrorless camera and they just do not have the shutter speed to operate at that fast frame rate as they are limited by the physical movement of the mirror.

I preordered a BM pocket video camera (body) from B&H (at my own risk without a post-release review.) But I will keep my Nikon 1 and Canon 5D Mark II. Len, variable ND filter, SD cards (fast and 64GB), workflow will cost extra.

  2. I don't have a V2 to compare with V1. Someone here mention that V2 has more noise than V1. This may be true but not sure by how much. To overcome this, use fast len and lights. Go for lower ISO (i.e., no more than 800) if possible. Also perform some noise reduction in post.

  3. Nikon decided to use Nikon CX sensors for the Nikon 1 series. The sensor is lager than those in camcorders or super 16mm film. But It is small than micro 4/3, APS-C and full-frame.

That is a giving constraint of Nikon 1 v1. For smaller sensor such as Nikon CX, two immediate concerns are low-light performance and wider depth of field (DOF). Nikon 1 v1 is 10.1 MP camera which is not too high for the sensor size having a reasonable low-light performance (Nikon 1 v2 is 14.2 MP camera.) These concerns are addressed by Nikon with faster lens such as Nikon 1 18.5mm f/1.8 len and Nikon 1 32mm f/1.2. However, I would like to see a telephoto len at f/2.8 or faster. To achieve narrow DOF, the len needs to be close to the subject at its largest aperture.

  4. Here is my first test clips with Nikon 1 V1. I am considering to get another v1 instead of a v2 for better value (i.e., an extra battery, an alternative camera). Over heating is my main concern.

Capture with Nikon 1 v1 in RAW (12bits, 4:4:4, sRGB) at 30fps (Electronic shutter Hi.) Import all NEF files (10,132 KB each) in Lightroom 4. I use Timelaspe presets for Lightroom from LRTimelapse. Render out in full-HD 24fps at a half speed. No color grading to show the sensor's output; lower highlights in post.  I did not use ND or polarizing filter this time; the step-up adapter is on its way.

The original MP4 file looks great. High scene complexity with no macro blocks. Compression from Vimeo or YouTube is poor. You may download the original file from Vimeo for local viewing.

  5. Nikon 1 v1 is the first 1-second-4K-RAW video camera rediscovered. Practically there is no compression with it's 12+bits RAW shooting in burst mode at 30 fps with a near 2 minutes recycle time. Possible experiments: shooting fast-cut montages and music videos. The challenge: telling a story in 30 (or x) seconds with a sequence of 30 (or x) moving-pictures of distinct moments. Some or all clips may be shot at 60 fps with a duration of 0.5 seconds per clip for a slow-motion treatment in post.

P mode is workable. Depending on lighting condition, one should be able to use a variable ND filter in front of the len to open up the aperture (to slow down the shutter speed.)

Adapters are available for many existing lens (see below):

    FT-1 Adapter

M42 Lens to Nikon 1 Mount Adapter V1 J1 Camera

Canon EOS EF EF-S Mount Lens to Nikon 1 Mount J1 V1 Camera Lens Adapter

Pentax Lens To Nikon 1 J1 V1 Adapter

Nikon F Mount AI Lens To Nikon 1 Adapter

16mm Bolex movie C Paillard switar etc lens to Nikon 1 mount V1 J1 adapter

    NOTE:

"In another nod to Aronofsky who shoots most of his work on 16mm film, most Super 16mm and 16mm c-mount lenses can be used on the Nikon V1. I have a Nikon 1 c-mount adapter and it works well in video mode – but you will need the new V2 body to shoot in burst mode with it. That allows full manual control with a manual lens in burst mode, whilst the V1 can only enable the burst mode when a CX lens is attached and the camera sets exposure in P mode and then it locks exposure for the 30 frame burst at 30fps (1 second) or 60fps (0.5 second)." -- Andrew Reid
