Beautiful work. Can I also ask what sharpening you did and how you exported it? Some of the shots are so sharp and crisp, particularly of the woman near the fire at the end. Looks fantastic.

I always struggle to get crisp exports, even when the original footage has very high fidelity. I feel like h264 footage comes out much worse on Vimeo/YT compared to footage recorded in raw or prores for some reason.

I colour and sharpen and add grain for each clip so it's a bit hard to explain. The render out is h264 on best settings from Resolve. Hope that helps and thanks for the kind words!

Did you use your, “Oh let me take a photo and your secretly recording them technique while your seemingly fiddling with your camera controls?”

Haha nope. That was a trick to help shy videographers get over taking portraits.

So far only with the active stabilisation mode that records gyro

I think I saw in the Sony release vid that it has a 10% crop in 120fps. Too bad, but not a deal breaker I guess.

  4. Just put this piece out. I actually ended up losing an internal drive right at the end of this edit and I hadn't backed up for a few weeks. I found it so so hard to go back and redo all the work I had lost. Learned my lesson haha... Let me know what you think and if you have any Qs!

    Looks nice.

Need to see it in backlit situations, underexposed, and fast movement.

Is there any RAW footage anywhere with difficult run and gun situations to download?

You may have missed this, but not so long ago I suggested that we do something creative with the time on our hands and come up with this:

It's not that far off from your video, actually.
    Great minds think alike!

*This yellow rabbit will haunt me to the end of my days and it's your fault @noone. 😂 *

Awww, fog / haze is one of the next tools I'd like to get acquainted with, it adds a lot of depth to the shot.

How did you fog it? With some atmosphere in a can or a rather professional fog machine?

Ya I missed that post. Will check it out now! We usually use a fog machine which outputs so much more, but since things are all closed up I just used some fog in a can. Did the trick! ;)

Dang, nice library of international images.

I don't have near as much impressive travel stuff in the footage I shot from past years (most of my travel was over a decade ago), but this is a great idea and I have been wanting to consolidate/organize my footage that I do have.  Right now it's just laying about on random hard drives. And HDV tapes, ugh.

Your work makes me think that if I went through it all I might be able to pull something similar together.  Not as good what you did here, but at least it's a project that would have a bigger purpose than just tidying up my media.

I am sure it's impressive! Ya just trying to keep busy over here. Anything to create. It's hard not to feel stuck!

This is a good idea for a reel, actually.

Dig the lighting in the opening scene - as simple as that, but makes the globe and your daughter really pop out.

Solidarity and empathy - that's what we need.

Thanks, ya just a few lights and some fog.

WTH of reel, man, I'm impressed with your work! : ) The more I know it, the more I am sold : -)

Thanks so much for saying that! So kind of you!

Curious to know what everyone else is doing these days while being locked inside?

Really great work!!! As a fellow S1 owner, I find it really inspiring, too.

For what it is worth... to anyone interested, Cine D on the S1 is the OLD Cine D, while on the S1H there is a new version of Cine D called Cine D2. Not sure what difference it makes.

From what I have read... Cine D is supposed to be better for low light than VLOG. I actually tried to do some tests comparing nighttime vlog with HLG and Cine D (I think) but then I had to get a new graphics card, and new power supply, and my computer has been crashing, so I haven't had as much chance to work with it as I would have liked. Maybe by this weekend I can FINALLY get around to making a comparison of the low light footage. Fingers crossed.

I would love to see the test. Cine D is very good in low light. We were going to run tests to see if could beat the a7sii, but never had time to do it. Certainly the codec in the S1 holds up much much better.

I love the color grade in this video! Can you explain your process?

Absolutely. I created a look based off of this image. I dropped the black point and brought the exposure up and pushed the shadows blue. I did my grade in Resolve. Since all my gigs are cancelled now I guess I have more time for Youtube videos sigh.... maybe I will post a video on what I did for that if anyone is interested?

Beautiful! Love the use of nat sound.

    Chris

Thanks, glad it came out well. I always struggle with getting the nat sounds right in the mix.

Very beautifully shot. Your direction with what I assume are non actors was done very well.

I love the footage from those ff Panasonics. Even though I’m not a huge autofocus guy, I think that is one of the greater features of the mirror less models. Wish they would improve theirs.

Thanks so much! Ya as it stand, we shoot with the S1 our A cam and the A7iii for any of our gimbal work. Also the A7iii is much lighter so it makes sense. You just really need to nail your exposure properly.

Cool, thanks for the reply. Also, did you use continuous autofocus and how did it perform?

No... unfortunately the AF isn't that great on it. We shot manual. That's the only thing that the Sony A7iii does better than the S1.

Looks great. How's the s1 in shooting vlog in low light? I'm still on the a7s ii and shoot slog2 in low light but i always overexpose to get a clean image. Is that necessary on the s1 or you can expose how you want for the final image?

We shot in Cine D so I can't really comment on Vlog, but I can tell you how it is exposing and the flexibility in the footage in comparison to the a7sii. It is so much more flexible. A few of the scenes we really had to push to the extremes of the dynamic range and we brought it back in post easily without anything breaking apart. It wouldn't have been possible to do that to A7sii footage.

Nice. Shot in Vlog? I see the Mavic Pro 2 is no slouch either.

Shot in Cine D. The mavic 2 is so much better than the 1st version. You can really push the image around.
