adetrybed reacted to Lucian in Good vintage wide lens for use with iscorama 36
    Hi Guys,

I'm shooting with russian primes (helios 58mm, mir24n 35mm, tair 85 etc) I'm looking for something
wider than 35mm that will stay consistent with this aesthetic.

My gh2 will vignette using the isco at any wider than 25mm, so that is around what i'm looking for.

Any suggestions? I'm current looking at the MIR10a (28mm), downsides are its star bokeh looks
a bit odd and its f3.5.

    Thanks!

There's a dark horse in our midst which very few know about, a camera which can shoot 4K raw at 60fps for $200.

adetrybed reacted to markm in Canon raw V BMD
Exasperated by the lack of BMD cameras and their non communication I am again looking at the Canon 5DL Mark III
What I would like to know is What are the issues with the 5D like moire, anti aliasing etc and how it compares to the BMCPC. Is there a way to record the RAW to SSD cards and how easy is it to use and how easy to grade? Any test films?

Also any fixes like special filters etc that can be bought.

Workflow - How easy is it to use Canon raw and how many hoops to jump through to edit in say Sony Vegas. Could you for example buy Cineraw or something like it to be a one stop solution.

adetrybed reacted to Dr. John R. Brinkley in Editing System for GH3
Andrew's post about the Hackintosh for editing RAW files got me thinking about how to approach an editing system for the GH3 I'll be using (once it finally ships to the US).

I'm curious how much power and storage I would when shooting with a GH3. (Keep in mind I'm not thinking of a PC system, but open to the idea if someone feels they have great results).

Would a Mac Mini with quad core and 8gb RAM suffice? And has anyone done any DIY upgrades to a Mac Mini that works well?

I've been leaning towards a new Imac but can't stand the lack of adaptability and higher cost, which is why I was wondering if I could get away with a Mac Mini and getting my own monitor at a cheaper price. Tweeking a Mac Mini may be an exercise in stupidity I realize, but you can at least get into the guts and people seem to do various unauthorized upgrades, like putitng in an extra hard drive and such. But will this be worth it considering the cost?

I assume a laptop would not be enough power but maybe not?

Curious what others thought based on what you know about the GH3 and the file sizes and demands that will be required...

    Cheers,

    Dr. John

I honestly can't remember the last time I was so gripped by a mainstream piece of cinema. For the first half I had a permanent grin etched on my face for at least an hour, and for the second half I was on the edge of the seat with the kind of tension and sheer terror that you rarely see with the pacing of most mainstream movies - Ridley Scott did it with Alien and Tarantino's completely mastered it here. The first act is like the journey of a roller coaster up the tracks and then for the 2nd half it comes rocketing down and you're terrified.

Django Unchained is a towering achievement - and here's how it was shot.

LOL, you obviously haven't read the actual tests being done (click the link above).  Resolution with the same lens on the adapted NEX is measurably higher than a 5DmkII in the center and averaged over the entire lens, only dipping slightly in the corners.  Right there, sharper than still the best value in full-frame motion picture shooting, so good still that Canon had to take it off the market to make their newer, more expensive cameras more attractive to Canon buyers.

Also, you haven't read how Slumdog Millionaire was shot with those cameras either.

    Please, continue to punt though.

adetrybed reacted to Julian in Sony A58 (and future NEX) with new sensor?
According to rumors the upcomping Sony A58 will get a new 20MP sensor.
This will probably replace the current 16 MP sensor and I would expect new NEX camera's will also get this sensor (except for the NEX-3N, which will be released soon with the current 16MP sensor).

I'm really curious how this new 20MP sensor will turn out. I hope it will be as good, or better, than the Toshiba 24MP sensor in de Nikon D5200 for video.

A NEX-5R or NEX-6 replacement with this new 20MP sensor would be great if it is on par with the Toshiba-sensor. Especially combined with the speed booster.

I'd say Standard Digital video in the era of the VX1000 preceded the practical use of DSLRS for video...the quality of the preamps just declined and high level production required double system.

DSLR brought with it even more limitations like with audio metering, so it forces people to look outside the camera for solutions.
Meanwhile, if you're weren't a one man army, there were better tools on the market, but it becomes a matter of budget. A working cinematographer/filmmaker needs the most versatile tools possible.

The AdobeRGB version looks more contrasty to me, but you can also use a histogram to see the actual differences.

In case you're wondering, I'm using a browser plug-in written by a friend to show the histogram.  It works on almost every website except for Facebook, I think. Get it here for Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/image-histogram/kgefpfienchbbehcjnmbmogdigoedhaj
