Thank God they didn't went up in megapixels. It will probably be very good at high ISOs. And let's say the truth, who needs 8K??

so i would have to pay for a 12k camera just to get insanely sharp 4k images and then put a shitload of filters on the lens, and probably a net on the back, just to get nice cinematic images?
    this is nuts!

So now its Blackmagics turn to add some camera news, along with Sony and Canon.
Its just like buses, these camera related announcements.  Wait ages and then 3 turn up at once.

@ade towell There are two ways of looking at this, glass half-empty or half-full. Andrew made a good post about this: https://www.eoshd.com/8k/a-closer-look-at-the-canon-eos-r5-lower-quality-4k-mode-to-avoid-thermal-cut-off/
R5/R6 can be used without overheating issues. If you want maximum performance (which no other hybrid camera can currently give you) well you are prone to thermal cut off limits and high RS. I think it's a fair trade-off situation and Canon are being open about it as opposed to Sony.
Concerning the R6 4K crop, it is of x1.07. It apparently takes a 4K DCI image and truncates it to UHD. No biggie.
As for the S1H being a better hybrid video camera, that is subjective. The poor AF and weight (1Kg vs 680g) makes it a no go for me personally and if you want FF no crop 4K60p in 10-bit.. only R5/R6 will give you that. But of course YMMV.

One ultra-modern film for me is "Otto e mezzo" by Fellini. Maybe even more advanced to it's time than 2001 Space Odissey.

Or "8 1⁄2" as it's known in English speaking countries. It still feels fresh today, perhaps because the ways in which it bends the familiar rules of narrative have already been absorbed and reproduced in popular culture.
You could make a link between Fellini's film and the original self-referential and rule breaking masterpiece, Laurence Stern's 1759 "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman".
People have been playing with conventions for a long time, are doing it right now and will continue to do so. Don't disregard contemporary experimental cinema as too obscure, because this is where it's all happenning. It requires a rewiring of your brain, but once rewired it's a joyride.
The vast majority of film festivals pander to mainstream tastes. And it's difficult to sit and watch cutting edge experimental stuff at home. I like a screening environment where you sit amongst other people and watch something from start to finish. I had my mind blown at Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin.

If someone wanted something smaller than an Alexa, cheap enough to crash and better image quality than a gopro then they could have just bought a BMPCC or BMMCC.
Sounds like they set out to build a camera for a specific task without first phoning up the camera store to see if one existed already.

I will have to push on with my YouTube channel double-quick pace. Really enjoyed doing the first video.
However, I fear the written word is dead and here's why.

Look how much space YouTube takes up on a typical Google search and how far it pushes the first result down the page for EOSHD.
The first result for "Iscorama GH5" is this forum. But it's barely noticeable with all the YouTube videos.
YouTube is a Google service and this is an abuse of a monopoly plain and simple and they should be taken to court.

There are some exceptions to the free speech rule actually.
Racists or apologists for them, lose their right to a voice.
So just so you know why, if I do have to delete posts on this topic it'll be for those reasons.
Same with the "America first" MAGA nationalists. Fuck off.

Now in this world of influencers-wannabes everybody has opinions, no idea what is needed to do what they want and ridicule budgets.
Dream of escaping up, becoming a great documentary filmmaker!

In a most scenes, without fast panning or water or lots of random-ish motion, modern LongGOP is very very good and offers better compression than ALL-I.
I don’t see any difference between 150Mbps longGOP and 400 Mbps ALL-I from my GH5S unless the footage contains waves, lots of splashing water, or leafs blowing in the wind on a tree.
HEVC (H.265) based LongGOP is even better and since most modern hardware is now incorporating HEVC acceleration hardware for easy decoding and encoding I see even less of a disadvantage to using it.

So many times I wish I were a photographer instead
You can get a beautiful shot with a camera that looks the same whether moving or still...
But movement always has to justify itself.
If the frame floats or moves with IBIS, shot dead. Mood gone. It's such a fine art. Camera movement is such a fussy thing. It's like colour - There's no point it being there unless the movement is beautiful or has meaning. Otherwise, may as well be still - or black and white.
With a photo you can just make a pretty shot and it's job done. It's about timing, framing. With video you have to sustain all that's nice and has meaning for 10x longer. Sometimes 1000x longer.
With photos there's the one-man nature of it... with video, you have to rely on others a lot more - actors, writers, and so on. And that's before you've even started the shoot
    Sometimes I hate video.
And think I'd be better off with a Fuji GFX 50R, just enjoying myself.
Just one man and his camera.
With video, you often have to lug around rigs, tripods and monitors.
To anybody who sustains their filmmaking over the years at a high level I salute you. It must be incredibly stressful!

Little short I shot on the XT3. Was bored and also suffering heart break so I came up with this. Was just filming myself and edited it that same day. Nice to get some creativity out in this odd time.

Correction, I meant "Better Quality" mode.
And I just tested the longGOP at 29.97 HEVC 400mbps, and that also plays back smoothly in "Better Quality" full resolution
mode, a compression I've never used before. So no problems with 29.97 HEVC at any compression.
It's the 59.94 fps HEVC that needs the "Better Performance" mode in the FCPX viewer.

Yes. I've used a stock Mac Mini i5, 8GB ram for a year editing 4K60p H265 HEVC 10bit 200mb/s in Final Cut Pro without transcoding.
For a single track of video the playback is smooth with the viewer's "View Quality" setting at "Better Performance". This slightly reduces
the resolution of the playback display but at 4K is still a great picture to edit with. And as soon as you stop or pause playback it refreshes to full res.
Set at "Better Quality" you get full resolution playback in the viewer, but the frame rate drops to maybe 15fps. Still, playback does not stall and the
audio keeps up in sync without dropouts.
Adding an effect may stall playback, but color adjustments (curves & color wheels) and audio equalization usually will not.
If you are stacking layers of shots for keying, superimpositions, etc then you would want to transcode from H265.
You need the latest Mac OS, Catalina for the correct handling of H265, the previous Mojave had a problem that crushed the blacks & whites of HEVC.

    I have a 27-inch 2019 iMac and it's no problem cutting 4k50p 10bit footage. I think it's mostly 200mbps Long GOP.
In Premiere, it can run very smooth on 'Full' quality even with a light grade in Film Convert, so I guess 60p would also be no problem, especially if you knock it to 1/2 while editing.
