Do you think it is necessary to export/import video after denoising?
I mean that if the Neat video is at the top in Effects and below is eg. Lumetri then the result should be same as export of denoised video and then import for grading (It think that in this case - Premiere firstly denoise video and then apply other effects in one task). You can avoid another compression. Am I correct?

just got my shogun back from repair yesterday, I'll try and do some tests soon. In setting it up I can tell you that some camera features are not available while the shogun is plugged in, like white balance. But ISO and shutter speed are available, and I assume aperture control as well, but I'm using pl lenses right now so that's not an option anyways.

Back to basics. Default Gamma DR settings with sharpness at -10. MBL = 0. 16-235. Film Convert (Arri / Alexa / Rec 709 - Astia 100). I love using this camera. I know they are exiting but I wish they gave us one more FW update for it as a parting gift (VERY doubtful). NX1 & both "S" lenses.

not just the nx1 sensor obviously  used the 28-70 2.8 on my a7s and it was beautiful.
anyways this thread has been enlightening. i'm in the process of finding where i like the settings and recently did a test with 2 very contrasty scenes (interior and exterior) and I'm blown away with the shadow detail that this camera retains... it keeps it much cleaner than on the a7s (which is why we'd always ettr).
don't judge me too much! these were scenes designed to push the video capabilities in post, and see what kind of image I could recover, not necessarily to be beautiful.
here are a few screen grabs:

    settings are as follow:
gamma dr. sharpness -10, contrast -10, sat -4, black level +10
internally, this might be a bit aggressive. there is some banding on the walls of the interior shots (which were heavily underexposed btw), but i'll test it again with the shogun on saturday and see if the extra 422 helps with that.
the lenses were second gen sony cinealtas... and are almost too sharp with how much this camera sharpens. i should add to try and mitigate some of that i shot through 1/4 HWBMF

Yep, I often shoot at 25fps or 24fps with 1/30 shutter. That has two nice effects, imo:
    - 1 stop more light
    - less stuttering (more blurred subjects in motion)

    I really like this setting.

Even in NX1 is 1080p mode very much sensitive on ISO/framerate.
My experience (I had always smart range ON but I have not make any comparsion how it affect image quality):
1080p60 - maximum usable ISO for me is ISO 400 and everything above is "smeared to hell and blotchy"
1080p120 - maximum for me is ISO 200. Decrease in quality is visible even on A7SII and GH4, still NX1 seems to be best even on ISO 1600 - see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek2l3d6hVQ0
4k30p - fine and no problem here - everything is quite as expected. Image become little smeared since ISO 1600
Summary - I use 1080p modes only with fast lenses or in bright light...

Thank you so much, it really means a lot =)
I havent been doing color grading for too long, and the NX1 is my first "pro/enthusiast" camera, I used the Canon 600D for about 1,5 years. I think with the NX1, its a matter of time, you need to get around its quirks, get to know its flaws, and most people just didnt bother to explore it enough.
A few pages back (I think it was this topic) we were talking about limiting yourself with gear (lenses), and I think that is the best way to evolve and progress, and the same goes for cameras, I cant afford to buy more than one camera, so when I spend 1500€ on a camera, I need to learn how to come out with the best product I possibly can, because I cant get enough money to buy another camera.

I think it is normal that you lost details in motion - it should be more obvious if you have so much detailed image as produces NX1.

    Another re-edit :

I realized, I stopped taking pictures almost completely, and instead use only framegrabs...The quality is simply outstanding, and quite honestly, the gap between photo and video has become so thin, its barely noticeable.

The jerky motion could be caused by lens stabilization, especially since you say it's not dependent on shutter speed.
As for the sharpening, that is kinda the normal behaviour of simple spatial sharpening. If you take a blurry picture and apply x amount of sharpening, the effect seems to be small. Take a sharp picture and apply same sharpening and the effect seems very strong.
Therefore the jerky motion + sharpening will accentuate the jerkiness even more.

Great suggestions ... I'd like to see these if there is ever another FW update or an NX2
    1) Ability to use AF-S in Video ... move the focus point around where ever you want and it stays there instead of going to AF-C when you press record
    2) Choose anywhere in the screen to magnify in MF mode instead of just the centre
    3) Peaking to stay on all the time
    4) Ability to change between EVF and LCD during recording

    1) 4K center of sensor readout, for a reduced rolling shutter option for 4K. Hell this is technically already in the camera with DIS, just keep that crop!
    2) Samsung's own flat profile. No messing around to find the ideal, have the engineers make one. No noise reduction in this mode.
Agree with your macroblocking, but I think a Samsung created flat profile it would fix the issue. Also wouldn't mind the 200 bitrate option for only certain cards.

Heres some before and after, so you can understand how i've been exposing. These were with the grade on top, without further tweak, ill reduce the yellow/orange sat. and correct the color balance.

On both, I pulled either the exposure or the shadows up a bit. (this ballroom reminded me of titanic !)
As you can see, they're just slightly underexposed to avoid the clipping.

Wow such great response  I too was impressed, this is my fav grading so far, its quite filmic, with enough punch, it looks quite good when playing !
I used Gamma DR with the settings above. I do underexpose, not by a lot, but just enough to save all the highlights without having any clipping. I dont look at the metering, I just set my exposure by eye, so I dont know if I do by 1 stop or 2 stops, just make sure you're not clipping those highlights.

Pavel MaÅ¡ek reacted to ESGI Media in NX1 Fun with new Adobe CC H.265
Here's the actual section of the email, there are no secrets here so I see no reason why not.
Does the camera output clean video in 4:2:2 or 4:2:0? I've been seeing both quoted and just want to know for sure.
4:2:2 Also, when it converts the sensor feed into H265 internally, does it use 10bit or 8bit colour depth? I noticed the ProRes app converts it into ProRes 422 so just wanted to check. Judging by the smoothness of the colour gradients in the video clips Samsung uploaded it looks like it could be 10bit, please confirm?
It's 8bit when recording internally.  The image quality is much smoother and better because of the new codec (H.265). It has much better compression ratio than H.264. Will Samsung release a benchmark app to test how long the conversion time is? For example, the user selects a resolution/ frame rate and clip length and it can predict how long it will take?
It will take about 5 minutes  to convert for 1 minute clip. Rumour has it that the camera can output 7K video at 30fps or 1080p at 120fps (in theory). The UHS-2 card slot has enough bandwidth to send that footage to a card so between those two thing it could happen. Maybe. In a future software update?
This is not have been confirmed and we can't comment on this.

Imo, if there is any 'deal' among Nik and Sam it's the other way around. Sam is much more powerful and could 'acquire' the right of using Nikon name on its cameras to be released in Europe and USA. That'd be exciting.

Haha, this is gonna drag on for a while!
They really should be saying who this "official" source is though and the context of the email back and forth. An "official source" could be a sales rep who has no idea and has just answered no to the question "Are media reports true that Nikon is allegedly buying Samsung's NX technology"?
A healthy dose of scepticism is required.

    This one stacks up.
Can think of at least 5 ways it makes perfect sense.
Only question mark is what sensor size and lens mount they will have on it.
Easiest would be to keep NX mount and rebrand the S lenses, plus build fully functional electronic Nikon F mount adapter for it.
This would be similar to their approach with the 1 series mirrorless cameras.
They could put a native Nikon F mount on it like their DSLRs but size advantage of mirrorless would be lost.
Then again the NX1 was never a 'small' mirrorless camera, it was much more in the mould of a 7D Mark II.
