Interesting about your experiences with Zeiss lenses.

Maybe it is to do with the effect on the entrance pupil when the scope is attached. Try looking through the scope from the front object side with and without the zeiss at the rear and cycle through the apertures.

Regarding mixing scope and spherical, ARGO is a good one, - they have scope and spheric going on in some of the same scenes

Yes I'll give em a blast soon and post some examples. I don't have the 100mm though no,

It's quite common to mix anamorphic and spherical so it's not something to worry about I don't think. They're not the most practical things, even the super expensive ones, and getting the shot is more important than having everything anamorphic. Horses for their courses etc...

Ah Russian engineering... I swear whenever I touch a screwdriver something somewhere breaks and I develop new injuries. But maybe even I could fix these...

@Zach: what film were you using?

i was going to mention this but i figured that it would be better to mention after your first roll,... not that i'm trying to 'teach' you or anything,... you might have really liked your first roll after all.

for c41, if its 400 speed film, tell the camera its 200, 100, 50 and so on,...

for e6 you want to under expose a bit so 100iso at 120, 400 at 500 ish, and so on.

that tends to bring out the colours a bit more.

Interesting that you should shoot weddings. I saw a photographer at a wedding fair the other day & his USP was that he shot all on film. He had some nice large prints & albums but the style was more blurry & arty than what we are used to nowadays. Of course the danger if you get a taste for film photography is to realise why wedding photographers used to use medium format cameras with a negative size 3-4x the size of a 35mm negative then discover that while a Hasselblad is still very expensive that a used Mamiya 645 can found found on eBay at a very affordable price. It's a slippery slope...

depending on your digital, with a macro lens, a lightbox and a tripod i've had colleagues print decent quality A3 from 35mm 'scans'. you could definitely play around with those, and for the web its fine. bigger an yeah you'll want a dedicated scanner.

happy birthday, and oooh, nice bit of kit you have there,... wish i had an uncle that was into photography :P

there are loads of videos on youtube about how to load/unload film so you might want to watch a few first,.. its easy as piss so dont worry.

basically, there are 2 types of film that most people shoot,... c41 colour negative and e6 reversal/slide film.

c41 is very forgiving, and you dont need your metering to be spot on to get a decent image. also most places can still process it for you in under an hour. some places will even do a CD for you. low res scans but still nice to see your stuff without having to have prints done.

e6 is slide film,.. a bit pricier and development times depend on where you are,.. in the a big city you might get same day processing, in the countryside you might need to wait a few days as they send it out. e6 is less forgiving, you want to make sure that your metering is decent.

having said that,.. c41 under exposed turns out muddy,... you know that 'vintage' hazy crappy film look? thats under exposed c41. e6 under exposed is moody and dark with inky blacks. c41 over exposed can be powdery and pastelly, while e6 will just go all white.

c41 you can over expose more without losing too much of the scene, while e6 you can underexpose more and it wont go muddy hazy brown,... it'll just be black.

i would suggest you play with c41 first,.. kodak gold is pretty cheap and i think can still be found almost anywhere. if you're after a 400 speed film fuji's superia range is a good choice.

i'm sure a few will recommend you shoot black and white, but again, depending on where you are, it can take a while to process, which kinda takes the fun out of it. there is a kodak c41 black and white,...kodak BW400CN,.. is alright, but cant replace the loverly tri-x.

after choosing your film, you load it and tell the camera what iso film you're using,.. and then you go shoot. maybe try a few in full auto, then aperture priority, then shutter priority and see which suits your shooting style best. if you know your exposure you could just go full manual.

benefits of film? imagine if you could swap out your sensor,... its like that,.. every film has its own character and you can pick and choose depending on what you're shooting.

there's alot to learn and flickr groups are very helpful, as well as youtube channels,... but thing to do tho is to just go out and shoot as you need to learn the camera, and more importantly the film that you're shooting. try and stick with one kind of film till you get to know how it performs, then switch it up later.

if you like your colour, wait till you shoot e6, you wont want to shoot anything else,... cept maybe medium format e6  :P

    have fun!

i've actually been enjoying the contax zeiss lenses, only have the 35/2.8, 50mm/1.4 and 135/2.8,... but the 85's and 100's are meant to be nice too.

they're affordable for the slower 2.8/3.5 versions, US$300-400, and are loverly to shoot with, sharp and contrasty,... almost too sharp, but they complement the not as sharp or micro-contrasty helios, mir and jupiter 9 i also enjoy shooting with.

it depends on what you're looking for,.. the russian stuff is more filmic/cinematic, but the contax zeiss, being sharper, is a bit more modern looking. here's a still from a project i'm working on,... the 50mm on a GH2:

the 135/2.8 is affordable,..about $200, not as good a reputation as the others, and you need to stop it down a bit. but other than that, the 85, 100, and up are all meant to be pretty decent.

i've found them no harder than anything else to focus with, but then i normally stop down to f2.8 on the GH2,... might be harder to nail focus on 5D at 2.8 maybe, shallower dof? the helios is very easy to focus with though.

the zooms, while nice, have a front that rotates while focusing which could make it a pain for anamorphic,... i'm still trying to decide on how much of a masochist i am,... :P

    picked up a contax zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f2.8

    and made these stills:

the shigascope vignettes on a 35mm+gh2 but is fine on the 50mm f1.4,.. nothing post worthy on the 50mm yet.

i've found that it is possible to get a sharp image at 1.4 with the zeiss,... which is not good for my wallet

but i've also found that at 1.4, the little gap between the clamp and the lens,... light comes through that giving me a double image sometimes,.... so have to figure out a way to seal that space up.

    at 2.8 its gone completely.

contax zeiss CY very very affordable compared to newer zeisses, but are razor sharp without being too sterile, so seriously, look into them before their prices get stupid high.

i still use one, cos the chicks dig it :P

its one of those old analog sekonic ones from when i was shooting film,....

i still use it because i like to have a base reading off of which i can fiddle with, and when i find what i want to expose for, i dont have to faff about with the trial and error to get what i want, even though it doesnt cost anything on digital.

i find i work faster if i meter, then decide if i want to go up or down, then set and shoot, as opposed to shoot, nah a bit more , shoot, nah a bit more , shoot , ah ok.

i:m probably wrong and it's actually more time consuming, but i like not having to rely on the camera,..

this is probably me being old fashioned, but i once read someone say that photography is everything that happens before the shutter opens, and i'm inclined to agree.

    Hi everyone

     I´m a young video director from Madrid-spain, (www.MauriDGaliano.com)

I want to share with this great community my passion for  vintage Anamorphic Lenses.

I´ve been reading this forum a lot of times, but is the first time that i write something.

Allow me the honor to share my last Anamorphic video, a Drum cover for the Artist "Deivhook",the best Drummer in Spain.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13zPG1ebHlo

    I shoot this video with my basic set: Panasonic GH2 Flowmotion v2.2 + fd50mm 1.8 + Bolex Anamorphot 16/32 1.5x.

The Bolex is the little girl of all my lenses...the "jewel of the crown",

The  rare 1.5x ratio suits perfect for almost everything, and its super-easy to make the double focus with it, in this video theres no flares, but this lens have the best flares  i´ve seen. Flare sooo easy, blue-deeply flares like Panavision C series. Mindblowing.

Now i have a clamp, from VidAtlantic, but im interested in upgrade to Redstan, i´ve seen that redstan have a custom Clamp for the little brother of my lens, the 8/19 1.5x, And im asking myself if he has one custom clamp for my lens.

Someone can give me the contact of Redstan?

I hope that you enjoy the video!

If someone have a question about the lens, ask me!

PD: I already knows that i suck writing in english, sorry!

brucker reacted to powderbanks in Patch/Hack Question: MJPEG Anamorphic 2x 4:3 at 70Mbit 1920×720/30p
the noise is due to the way the different codecs work; and probably also the way the camera is putting the image it into the 1920x720 frame..something like with what happens in extele mode. mjpeg is also only in 30fps. i have a 2x anamorphic and i rarely use the mjpeg modes. though i did find a patch that takes the hd mjpeg mode into 2k...so i need to test that out. the footage is still plenty usable. i shot this video with a 2x anamorphic and the canon fd 50mm/1.8. i was curious to see how the anamorphic fared handheld..(i'm still getting used to the dual focusing, there's some spots, most notably in the interview bits, where i was off..)

    https://vimeo.com/53870989

the only reason i'd use mjpeg is for the instant aspect ratio correction. and i can get ~2hrs of footage on my 64 gb card in mjpeg as opposed to just under 1hr in avchd/24p cinema mode (driftwood's canis majoris night or sedna patches). if you use the mjpeg mode, you don't need to do anything to the aspect ratio; it's correct and properly de-squeezed to use right off the card. for avchd footage that i shoot anamorphic, i interpret the footage and force the pixel size to anamorphic 2x.

and the only reason why it is in mjpeg mode is because you can't adjust the avchd dimensions like mjpeg. i'm guessing it has to do with the avchd codec being designed for hd formats, so it only works with the standard 1080/720 dimensions..but that's a complete guess. another advantage of mjpeg is that you can drop the frame rate down to 2fps for timelapse. i'm not sure if it would work to change the framerate to 24fps, without having issues. i haven't seen a patch with that, so i would assume it crashes.

    anyone make music?

it'll probably follow a similar pattern,... emulator plugins will come that will letterbox+add cheesey flare+fiddle with colours/sharpness.etc all at the touch of a button and it'll have a special "add mojo" randomizer and a special algorithm that is written by an anamorphic "expert" ...

and lil johnnys and janes everywhere will have their first steps rendering in glorious faux-nemascope,..

but there will be a core of us that would rather shoot and capture the look at the shoot than spend hours fiddling with sliders into the wee hours of the morning, so the prices of certain lenses will remain high if not go higher as supply dwindles.

just like in music where you have guys who have gone back to portastudios and tape and four track recorders and vintage synths cos all that technology got in the way of doing what they want to do.

dual focusing is nothing compared to the hours you could waste fiddling with sliders and always going just a smidge too far  :P

i made this video a few months back after picking up some cheap c-mount lenses and an anamorphic lens off of ebay. it was really more for me to see how i could use some of the lenses and image quality from the cheapo c-mounts. this was the first time i had shot with an anamorphic, so there are a couple shots where the focus and/or alignment is off. i think i'm going to redo the test at night to get an idea of how they do in low light.

It's the sum of the experience that your audience takes home not individual parts.
