Rudolf reacted to BenCoughlan in ANAMORPHIC MUSIC VIDEO WITH ISCORAMA (SORT OF)
    Hi Guys

Thought I would share our latest music video that we shot using Kowa anamorphics (40mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm PL with ALEXA) and which we used an iscorama and BMCC (2.5k) to do a few pick ups with.

Sadly only one of the Iscorama shots made it into the video. Not from lack of quality or it standing out... but just from the story telling side of things we only ending up needing one. I have to say when we were editing, how impressed I was with the combo. It held its own very well against the Alexa and Kowa combo and now plan on shooting more with it.

One thing I have always been conscious about with the iscorama is how it would fair on proper sets. I do often worry that its sometimes hard to tell if things are sharp and the focus is stiff making it hard to use a follow focus. I plan on having mine 'Van Diemen Rehoused' in the next few weeks to make it more onset friendly and then will hopefully get more use out of it.

The iscorama shot is the night time driving just before he enters the bike workshop. Could upload some other shots from the shoot if anyone is interested.

Very good looking and you did a good job on focussing as well. Fun to watch.
I liked the zebras and the next shots with the shadows... and all the others as well.
Also waiting for some new clips with your rare Cinegon :)

I really think that the stretch figures x1.5 or x2 on these adaptors isn't an exact science & maybe best seen as a guideline.
But yes, focal range can affect the image in some cases & a good compromise is to conform it to 2.66:1 (no need to get too anal about it).
Also, after shooting a lot looking at 16:9 squashed footage, I find that my eyes play tricks on me & objects just start to look odd when unsqueezed if i don't walk away before reviewing the footage.

Hi there - here's a link to download this test:
    http://vimeo.com/jaemorrison/iscorama54test01

I was interested in seeing what Apertures were sharp with different Achromats & Diopters.

Rather than waste even more time cutting a boring video,
I've just uploaded a boring image sequence for you to download and step through frame-by-frame.

The Achromats and Diopters tested were:

    Redstan +.25 Achromat
    Tokina +.4 Achromat
    Voightlander Focar A
    Voightlander Focar B
And some stacked combinations of the above.

Apologies if the test isn't ideal (h264 certainly isn't) - thought it was worth sharing as I've learnt a lot from people posting stuff here.

    Cheers,
    Jae.

Rudolf got a reaction from quarki69 in GH2 Hack vs GH3
For me the GH2 was absolutely great! I never had any quirks and it was always reliable (I used the "Vanilla hack") Image is also very good "out of the box" for my taste. I sold it (bad idea) and bought the GH3 therefore. There are things which are also great about that camera:
Get rid of AVCHD! 25/50p! Much better feel and weatherproof! Better photos (for my taste)! I prefer 2x crop (better/wider with anamorphics)!
Dynamic range of the GH3 really is that much better over GH2. I recently captured video in very foggy conditions and later during grading I could make things visible my eyes couldn't see when I was shooting - that was really astonishing. But at first glance I preferred the image of the GH2 (still not sure what "cinematic" really means? I always thought for many it means "get as shallow depth as you can" but that is not my cup of tea because that is not so filmic)

    Here's my video to share.
Had some trouble nailing focus shooting T2.8 on some crap BMPC LCD screen, but here you go!

    EXPERIENCE
I enjoyed using this. This is a final production prototype that I am testing. What makes it great is that the setup was really light, pretty well-built, and the learning curve is pretty easy. It can resolve sharp images, especially with the achromats. On the small LCD of the pocket camera though, getting focus can be a crapshoot. Focus peaking does not always work and I had to guess a lot. I did have to tell Ying to slow down a couple times because there was no way I could pull focus, especially on a fairly fast aperture of T2.8 and pretty much 100mm equivalent lens. Really should have a large monitor. But then it's not really a run and gun lens like I was using here though. I don't feel like anamorphic in general is normally for documentary style work. Neither is the pocket camera. Hope this helps you.

Alot of people think lens 'bokeh' is the filmic look
and anything with a narrow DOF looks like film and anything shot f11 and below looks like video!

this is the bain of many a camera discussion on this forum , nothing to do with the camera , all to do with how it was shot and what apperture was used , this dictates if people 'like it' as its filmic or hate it because it looks like video!!

Deep Focus is great ................go watch Citizen Kane......all shot deep focus!! haha!!

What does chocolate taste like? Sweet? What does sweet taste like?(not trying to sound rude) You know it when you taste it.
I would say that filmic, which is a term I use a lot when talking about video is:

Has A Surreal feel to it, dream like, definitely not in the present, different from real life
Unlike the immediate presence of being "live" whether being live in person or on something like television or video.
Plus the other qualities mentioned above DR, sometimes shallow DOF etc.

Rudolf reacted to Sean Cunningham in "America Is Beautiful" (Coca-Cola Super Bowl Ad)
Not so strange.  Coke has embraced multiculturism in their marketing going back to at least the 1970s.  This is basically a variation on something like this:

...which were very successful ads here in the USA.  They represent people of the world but that's what makes up America.  Some people here forget that, which isn't too surprising since these folks, who will most certainly be right of center also get The Bible wrong and have a poor understanding of the "Founding Fathers" as well.  Everything is twisted the further you get to the right.

But enough politics, Coke has a tradition here which the latest Super Bowl ad is consistent with and it was the prettiest ad for the whole schebang yesterday which will likely go down as one of the most disappointing Super Bowl commercial years ever.

GREAT! Wonderful you achieved this with the tiny GH2! You(!) obviously don't need super-expensive gear and lenses and, and, and...
This is also encouraging for other people. I was recently thinking about buying Canon 5D... I will stick to my GH3 I think :)

i have the mod and yes its expensive but im glad i got it.

besides the metal housing protecting the lens, it makes it much stronger, so im not so worried about the plastic shrinking, deforming when focusing. i think it can take much more abuse.

you will need lens support. it does get heavy enough that i think itd rip out a m4/3 mount, and stress out an ef mount.

close focus at 3'7" rocks. you still need a diopter to achieve the nice bokeh i feel, but now ive got so much more flexibility.

i do think the weight and increased throw makes it become less of a one man crew lens when using it. and if youre using a follow focus, you need to use use a thick gear and a speed crank to take care of the long throw. metal focus gear on metal focus gear will make noise. (im looking for a rubber focus gear on my follow focus.) the front element extends long enough you can probably forget using a mattebox. but this is all how i feel about the 54 anyway. both a rehoused 36 and 54 are amazing lenses but in my opinion they still produce different results.

i also agree w tferradans in that i wouldnt have rented out the plastic version just because i dont think its robust enough. (i havent rented mine out yet and dont expect to until i figure out how to protect my investment in case someone says "it's lost").

and yes i think the resale value goes up. unless van diemen can crank out the mod in a week, youre not only reselling the lens, youre reselling the amount of time it took to get the mod in the first place which is a few months and seems like some people need/want the iscorama urgently enough to pay for it.

i say if you seriously get use out of your 36, shoot a lot, and you have friends/crew that can AC for you, then get it. i absolutely love mine, its on my camera 95% of the time.

if youre iscorama is nice and greased up, youre only shooting tests and youre a one man crew and really not using it that much, i dont think think the mod is worth that money.

Very nice photos. When I see all these great photos I wish I had just a tiny little bit more talent
Very good combo (Sony+Nikon+Möller=Wow!) but maybe you have a substitute laying around for the Nikon which focuses the "right" way so that you can rotate both at the same time (Möller and taking lens) - that is good fun either!

There's no comparison.  I own the LA7200 and it smears so badly at the left and right edges.  The SLR is sharp all the way across the frame.  That alone is reason to get one.  Also you can just screw on diopters is just awesome.  I've dropped so many diopters from my LA7200 with all the crazy taping/rigging I can't tell you...

Chris, congrats for breaking through this spiral of desire for gear! There is a lot you have written which is very true and is also a subject of debate in other threads ("is better/more expensive gear necessary for a good movie"). We want more, better and newer gear. This is also what this blog is about. There is at least one new camera or lens or whatever being tested every week... But it is also a lot of fun: to play with some new toys  :)
And they don't have to be always expensive: Although I have Iscoramas I bought a €100,- Moeller 32/2 which are usually very cheap and I really have a lot of fun with that thing...
However I wish I will become a bit more sensible about spending money - like you! In any case very good food for thougth.

PS I haven't seen the commercial in question but it can not be more annoying than the latest Star Trek !
