graphicnatured reacted to kye in Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
Aren't we simultaneously having two conversations?
The P4K is way too sharp!!! 4K and modern cameras aren't cinematic, the Alexa / older BM cameras are all lower res and have magic. The P4K is way too soft!!!! BRAW is clearly inferior because it smooths fine detail. Not to mention conversations in other threads that also include:
Who needs 4K - 1080 is fine and you can't tell the difference and ...... blah blah blah 8K!!!!!! OMFG!!!!! ?? -
graphicnatured reacted to kye in film grain
Also, remember to adjust the amount of grain you're applying so that it looks good in your final delivery file. Compressing video really kills the grain, especially YouTube or other online streaming services.
I'd suggest making a test project with a series of shots with increasing strengths of grain, output it, upload it, then look at it and dial it in from there.

Braw is brilliant. But you can mangle it in post like any codec if you make bad decisions.
It was obvious from the first time I tried it that the extended video LUT was useless with too much contrast and poor highlight handling.
So I never used it.
I graded a piece last week using nothing but primaries. Exposing well in Braw gives you amazing latitude and control in Resolve.

graphicnatured got a reaction from kye in DJI challenging GoPro?
GoPro's last ad was created entirely by all of us, the consumers. Not a single clip was made in house.

Looks like a GoPro copy, and the 7 has insane stabilization. I have it and it really works. Really happy with the footage I get. On my previous GoPros I was always disappointed with how the image looked on my computer VS gopro promotional videos. Not anymore. I think the IS accounts for 90% of that and the IQ is also better.
Let’s see what DJI brings, raw maybe? But useless for me on an action cam.
i don’t get why they wouldn’t put a 1” sensor. The P4 and Mavic Pro have very small cameras yet 1” sensors.

A ton of different GoPro competitors but when you stack them side-by-side, the Hero 7 Black has better image quality than all of them.

graphicnatured reacted to JurijTurnsek in DJI challenging GoPro?
DJI never had to worry about water resistance and heat dissipation, so entering the action can market would not be a simple R&D project. It does not make much sense, because they cannot use the same cameras one their drones and the action cam market is already very saturated. It does not make sense economically for them and they are not drowning in cash after their supply chain affair.

That's old news. They've been making a rebound. Who knows what the future holds, but the Hero7 Black is awesome and considering history, a new cam could be unveiled in a few months.

graphicnatured got a reaction from thebrothersthre3 in Game of Thrones ... because why not
Speaking of dark, but unrelated. My buddy and I bought tickets to see The Passion of the Christ, but by the time we entered the theater the movie had already started. The beginning of that movie is pitch black so we couldn't find our seats. I didn't even know if I was standing in the aisle or in front of someone. I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face. It was both uncomfortable and hilarious for a very inconvenient amount of time. First world problems, considering the film we were trying to watch.

I'm assuming you weren't actually looking for a response. Hook has been helpful when he's had time. Why go this route? I'd love for his input to remain a part of this forum. Omit the emotion when asking the question so we have a chance at an answer. I know this topic has come up before and he's responded to it. Things are always changing. Lets keep it real in here. Even if I missed something I don't know about, that post isn't getting any of us anywhere. My two cents.

We have an Ursa Mini Pro at work and just shot a big project with both that cam and the Pocket4k both maxed out and, yes, in certain scenes the DR advantage can be seen, but for the most part they look very similar. So much so, that to most, no one could tell the difference. I guess it depends on what you're shooting.
I have both the OG pocket and the Micro. Not sure I should keep both, but I too love the image. Even when we were shooting a lot of projects with the FS7 I thought the Micro blew it out of the water. Just a beautiful image.

Yeah it was nice to have. I bought mine way too early and there wasnt enough support (cages, small monitors, port add ons) to put together a useful rig for my style of shooting. Otherwise, I really loved the camera and could find a use for it again. With that being said, I’m unsure how much I would use the 60p and I wonder if the OG Pocket and a loupe would make more sense... it would definitely be the cheapest way to shoot ProRes LT.
And then Z-Cam is supposed to release their E2C model pretty soon for $799 which will offer 4K ProRes up to 30p and 1080 up to 60p. I think with a possible Raw update in the future.
A lot of choices. Haha.

Ha! I have a skit from 25 years ago that ends abruptly because the Horton security guys chased us off the premises. Some things never change I suppose.

I would be too if I was security at a place that dead. I'm going to look into golden west hotel now. Thanks for the tip.
.... just looked into it. That place is awful! Yikes. An asylum or jail cell. It definitely fits the role of either.

Nice work, Kaylee! I recognize my neighborhood in there. You live here too? I like the compositions and also appreciate the color.

Hello Andrew,
It seems that from some of your other posts you are sometimes criticized. I read many of your articles and I don't post very often. I am just writing that I, from one of the many, support your independent work, your independent views (unlike those that get buttered up by canikon). I greatly appreciate your work over the years. I am very positive that I speak for many silent readers.
Cheers!

I agree with @webrunner5 the BM wins by a big stretch. That being said, its still pretty good for 2009. I remember being blown away by ML RAW on it when it became available.

graphicnatured reacted to Andrew Reid in Organic looking Panasonic S1 footage
Shot externally with an Atomos in HLG 10bit mode (higher bitrate than internal)
Looks pretty good to me, and a hint of what the internal codec upgrade will look like.
I also feel for a promo film it's above average, a very simple story but effective. A bit sentimental of course, and not perfect attention to detail in some shots, but it works.
I hope one day when I hear a piece of music it will remind me of the Panasonic S1, when I was young enough to shoot stuff and not too old and crippled to use a camera

To me the PK4 wins by a pretty good amount. Even the colors are better. Amazing camera the PK4 if you are going for the modern look. At the time I thought the Canon Color Science was the Cats Ass. Now it looks pretty dated. Even Canon realized it as their newer bodies are way better CS wise. I think the C series Cine cameras still have that great look for older cameras like the C300, 100, 1DC. Even the 5D mk III was a better change CS wise. But I still sort of hold a original C100, C300 as a pretty amazing baseline to aim for. I didn't seem to like the C100 mk II CS as much. But it is probably more realistic, so in the long run better.
Now things are a lot more saturated, good or bad. I think for the good, I have got used to it. Olympus, Fuji were were ahead of the times lol.

Just look how to rig camera started at 4:48 - and yes, it seems that it was possible just with BMMCC+Laowa 7.5mm
