Also curious if we can dream about a new encoding option..
But i agree that disable the auto noise reduction from the system is more important now.

    I've pledged.
The modders are fantastic people. lets help them. Remember they are putting their own time into this.
Perhaps those who were enthusiastic about giving donations, at the top and throughout this thread, would like to help .

I was just thinking about pledging, vasile and otto should just work on their hacks without fear of bricking the camera. I would definitely pay 20 euro's and more (if we see more results) and I don't even own the camera (yet)

Im not going to continue the conversation stating info on what I find. Kernel is irrelevant in this situation. Look up how tizen loads and how the srp works.
If there are relevant updates I will post, Im not going to comment on things to which people seem to just want to troll. Google is a friend use it.

I kind of hope you're trolling, but I feel compelled to respond anyway.
tl;dr: Nobody has been making any implied promises, and your suggestion had already been tried and failed before you posted it.
First of all, nobody is claiming to be working on super-duper secret projects. Everyone has been very clear that they are doing this for fun in their spare time. From what I have read, nobody is releasing much since there isn't much interesting to release. For what it's worth, there have already been results, in particular from Otto and Vasile. Both of them made no promises yet delivered exactly what they said they expected to do. Vasile claimed to have found how to increase the bitrate, and provided a video as proof. Yea he could theoretically have faked it, but I see know reason to think that at this point. Otto stated his intentions very clearly and his results have already proven useful to people who want to take videos of events longer than 30 minutes (as well as anyone who wants to investigate their camera further).
You got radio silence on your suggestions because people were already working on that and ran into problems that you did not address at all. In case it's too much trouble for you to actually read what people have already written, the issue was that if the camera app is killed it freezes the camera. It's hard to replace an app if you cannot even remove it. If you think you know how to prevent that, I would love to hear it. If you want "traction" in this discussion, try actually being helpful.
Regarding the DRIMeV SoC itself, I mostly agree with your educated guess. It is almost certainly the same die, and the ARM cores are 100% identical. Unfortunately that's not saying much at all since most modern ARMv7 cores are identical as far as the software is concerned. It's the details of other blocks that would determine whether or not the important components of the camera application run or not. I can't tell just from skimming the kernel source code.
It takes under 5 minutes to find and download the firmware update from Samsung's site. If you really don't have 5 free minutes in your life, I don't understand why you are wasting time criticizing people who have actually accomplished things and posted them here. If you are 1/2 as smart as you make yourself sound, it should take you less than an hour to unpack all the components of the firmware. I had never unpacked a firmware before, but it only took me two evenings to get all the major pieces out. The offsets, sizes, compression, and filesystems are almost all documented right here in this forum, so there is no excuse not to take a look if you really want to test an idea.
I totally agree that the ratio of people waiting with high expectations to the people working on it is rather high. The Magic Lantern forums are just like that on a larger scale, but that doesn't change what they have or have not done. You need to keep in mind that this forum is a community of filmmakers, not hackers (or even "photographers"). The point of this thread in the first place was to show interest in modifying a camera, at which I'd say it has admirably succeeded!
Finally, nobody cares that you're a busy person. So you like your HoloLens and want to play with it. Cool story. We're all busy people too, so suck it up and either contribute or go back to lurking. Sorry for the tone, but that's because I can never stand people who drop into discussions and claim that they could do it all better if they didn't have so many more important things to do, yet don't contribute anything useful.

samuel.cabral reacted to Mattias Burling in My initial thoughts on the 1DC (vs 5Dmk3, LS300, etc)
So I was offered a 1DC with low number of clicks and for $600 less than the current price of a A7rii retail.
I thought "What that heck, if its bad I can probably turn profit by selling it".
Ive only used it out and about twice so far. Also for a product review. And to be honest, I don't think its a keeper for me.
    The reasons are:
Awesome image, truly great. But imo the 5D Mark 3 Raw matches it. Lower res but better color and lower crop. Even at the low price, a used 5D is half the price. The 5D is much easier to use due to zebras, raw meter, etc, etc, etc. The 5D is smaller but I like the big size of the 1DC. Easily fixed with a battery grip. The 5D workflow is tougher in post, needs converting. But worth it for the Raw imo. Ive been offered a used c100ii or two c100i for the same price. And those where my reasons against the 5D. But if you dont care about Raw or to have "Canon Colors" there are tons of cameras in the same price range that will make your shooting so much easier.

As some might know I currently have the LS300 on loan for review. And today I had both in the garden just shooting random stuff in the bright sun.
It is of course night and day in workflow between a fully featured camcorder and a mostly equipped DSLR.

And at the end of the day, watching the footage Im not seeing a big enough difference. The 1DC looks nicer imo, no question. But not that much better.
Im not saying that I will buy the LS300, 5D or c100. But Im pretty sure I won't keep the 1DC.
Maybe I change my mind after some more testing but the initial thought is, not for me.
Here is the LS300 and 1DC.
    Same lens same settings
    JVC

    1DC

    JVC

    1DC

    And two short tests,
    1DC

    JVC

For reference, 5D Mark3 with a soft vintage Nikkor lens.

Not yet, just that opening slider shot but it was so damn windy. Didn't bring a stabilized lens so I had to skip the slider for the rest of the video.
Will shoot more vintage this week and use a slider. Hopefully test out the s16 mode as well with C-mounts.

Minor update, still doing what Im doing, still digging and documenting what changes Im finding in the firmware, have started to explore with telnet and the camera. Its looking good. Have a few ideas on how it utilizes firmware updates but nothing solid yet. But I like how both stages are progressing. Although i wish I had more to show haha but dumping c isnt going to have a point! I should have a major update in a few days though!

When Im off work Ill post up what Ive been doing and the things that have happened with the route Im doing. I suggest that otto k and vasile when he is back start a new thread containing the work they have done, as they are pertaining to different things and their updates come more quickly than mine! I will also post up the info in a github of the progress but I think it would help the organize the information better

    samuel.cabral reacted to SMGJohn in 4K / 2K MJPEG?
Chant said he might look into increasing resolution and maybe bitrate for the MJPEG, honestly I think the focus should be more on the MJPEG rather than the HEVC which is just painful to work with already and any higher bitrate will make it even more painful to work with than it already is, so instead of having a thorn in our bums, MJPEG would be the better pick here for easy editing.

Hope we can have an option to choose different aspect ratios like we have on the Magic Lantern.
I'd love to use my 2x anamorphic adapters on a NX1.

That is something that would be very simple to remove compared to what I just explained. A secondary task though, first we get to the good bits, and everything else is second. The way the srp even loads in is something that isnt well documented, let alone on a camera.

    Good news, bad news.

Good news is that I have learned a lot about the srp( samsung reconfigureable processor) architecture. Bad news. It is very very very very complicated. Machine compiled c into binary. Unknown yet when it is loaded into the firmware and if the .cpp files that are listed are infact that, or just other hard ware controls

So the srp is like an fpga in the way you can change what it does on the fly. It differs in the way that it uses VLIW instead of bits to do its magic.
Reverse engineering the binary into something workable.. is possible, but time will tell if and how much can be changed. The plus side of a simple isp changing values in softwear can do something like what the gh2 hack did. The downside being you are stuck with the hardware.
The plus side of the srp implementation.. Building a custom algorithm to..exchange the hevc codec with something else.. Could be possible. Unknown yet if the nr is a part of this or just a software implementation.

Also if the rumors were true about the ml guys approaching samsung, this would be why it didnt happen. They dont release the srp compiler. One instance of them giving access to it at the SAIT school in Korea is all I could find. very very proprietary.

But the dream for me of having a cheap 14bit 6.5k red competitor is what keeps me going. The confirmation of the UHS-II bus sweetens the deal. Going to investigate the possibility of a SD-SATA converter.. I wouldnt mind having a 1tb ssd attached to the back of the camera.

TL:DR This camera is complex and things are not getting easier but still progression is being made.

I'm with you on the NX1, Andrew! It has captured striking imagery with an astonishing success rate for me compared to any other camera. It might not sit atop any specific quantifiable ranking of cameras, but what it's capable of is just short of miraculous. On the Ronin, that AF system is a dream come true, and paired together in the right hands, most any shot is possible. It handles extremely well, is reliable as heck, and it has good tech specs where it counts.

You can call me crazy but... i was thinking that it could be useful for BMPCC users to use it with Nikon 1 lenses (especially the wide zoom 6,7-13mm).

If Vitaly, Magic Lantern or somebody else decides to mess with this system giving us RAW, Prores, diferents aspect ratios, higher bit rates... Nx1/nx500 would be the gh2/gh3 of 2015.
