"Math Class" on Baidu now has extensive infrared thermometer readings of the camera's mainboard with the back off, showing they correspond closely to the temperature reported in the EXIF data and don't rise above 64C. His next finding is that if you remove the internal battery it resets the so-called overheating limitations. So who is telling the truth now, Canon?
You can view the most recent findings here by the user "Math Class" (Google translated)

I'd like to hear from Tilta as well as Canon.
If my fridge doesn't cool the camera externally what does their fan do differently?
Canon said officially: "Use an external fan to dissipate heat"
Well I used an external fridge to dissipate heat and it made no fucking difference.

I shoot with the z6 every week. I can tell you that much improved or not, the autofocus is not good enough to use. I just did a shoot: 6 takes with presenter moving from wide shot to medium close up and none tracked focus property, and when it missed it focussed on the background. Tracking objects equally hit and miss.
But hey I hear you on the feel of the footage.  I owned and sold a gh5 partly for the same reason. A much more usable camera for video, but with worse results (at least for what I do).
I seem to have a thing for buying cameras with shite af.  I'm starting to get jobs that require it, so for me the z6ii is a make or break for me and nikon.

Agree. The z6 is nearly this. But the af is totally amateurish, as is the codec.
Add to your list 15ms readout.  (And 13.5 stops dynamic range in stills minimum)

That's the problem.. I haven't found it.  Fullframe DCI 4K HQ, no time limits. Strong editable codec. Upto 60p frame rate. Great AF, IBIS and colour.  Can shoot quality photos no less than 20MP.
If you have better luck finding one than me, let me know.

Daft blanket statement. Depends on how you make money as a photographer.  I'm a "professional" (I make my living from photo/video). I shot on a d5300 for a few years lol. I used to do a bit of teaching and many amatures/enthusiasts had 5x the dollar amount of my kit.
I'll be keeping a beady eye on overheating in high ambient conditions though. Crap loads of sun and 35+degree days are common in Aus.

Got GAS Creep, used to be considering the G7 as the upgrade from my G6 for my youtube vlog, but for the last year or so I've been keeping my eye on the G85 prices on eBay as that IBIS and live HDMI out would sure be handy! (even bid today on a G85 yet again, only to get outbid 😕 ah well, keep on trying! Will get lucky eventually)

However, as time keeps on going by, the G9 is now very attractive. (better AF! No crop in 4K! 180fps slow motion!) Especially now with that 10bit upgrade.

But with the Z5 launch (and soon to come Z6S??) the secondhand Z6 prices will I bet soon hit $1.2K on eBay? That's not much more than a G9...
Would be awesome to vlog together with this lens:

But the Z6 has the big downside of no way to even judge general rough framing of yourself while in selfie mode.

    Hmmmm....

    ah ha! Solution is found:

Is a nifty mirror that slots into your hot shoe so you can see your camera's screen, and is dirt cheap too.

Smaller than an external monitor. Cheaper too. And lighter. No batteries to worry about. No cables to worry about either.

This camera is nearly $7000 AUD.  It makes no sense.  Hybrid cameras are the jack of all trades, you expect compromise somewhere.  But I notice my z6 now goes for $2K aud.
so I could get 2, plus a ninja, plus a full sound kit.  Or a D850 and a blackmagic pocket 6K. I dont think I could justify that sort of money simply for the convenience of having the one body.

I don't really understand why there hasn't been more structured testing of this issue by the people who have them because, like it or not, the heat management is too big to ignore.
What is needed is a pocket sized battery powered HDMI recorder that can be connected to the output of the camera and automatically continuously overlay both time and ambient air temperature on the video recording and that will carry on recording regardless of whether the camera is switched on and outputting or not. That way, people can then use the camera however they want for the day in whatever usage patterns they usually use and in the environment they use it and they can then present the whole picture of what happens in their real world usage.
No notes or measurements to take, just use it as they would normally and then analyse its behaviour later.
And more to the point, prove it.
Such a device would put an end to all of the noise that is being generated by the scattergun testing.
Fortunately, I've actually developed such a device today 🙂
and here is  a (low res) grab of the output video from it being used just now with my Sigma fP.

Needless to say, as soon as - or if - @Andrew Reid gets his hands on a production R5 for testing then he is more than welcome to use it to run some real world tests.

I would guess Australia is a much better place to be a video maker than most of the world.
The prices are kept very low, even in TV jobs they proposed us a 20% cut, from the already low wages they are offering! I declined some already, but in the end I may have to accept a lesser pay, for more working hours, again.. and I was waiting for this year to rise my salary a bit..
The other markets are race to the bottom with people watching youtube and shot most of their stuff with their mobile phones.
Even some internet campaings we shot recently were not very well payed, to put it mildy, and we had to cut from everything just to justify making them.
Video is everywhere at the moment, so most of the clients except to be very cheap, and it is, because there thousands offering video services for very low money, except they are not profesionals, whatever that means.
Everywhere, the middle class is shrinking I guess, that is true in "middling" jobs too. There are mostly very low paid jobs, and you have to compete with hordes of 20 somethings that just bought a GH5 kit (I have many examples of people getting just an a6300kit and started working!), or try to reach the higher jobs, which are very few already, and in a lot of broken economies are not very well paid either (Balkans, Middle East, Africa, Most of Asia, Central and South America, e.t.c).
Probably everyone will shoot with 360 cameras and 360 microphones, will edit with voice commands, and produce their own videos in 20 years from now!

I hate this bit. Where the only people who have cameras are the reviewers that play the game with the big companies: who know who will blow smoke up their arse.
By the time we actually get to see any stills and vid samples the bloody things have been pundited to death, we've all lost days of our lives pointlessly pontificating (hey yeah totally guilty m'lord) and arguing the toss 😆 and we've spent so long doing it that the actual release is a huge anticlimax.  (Or in my case realise that my niche absolutely does not need, and so I cannot possibly justify, dropping $6.5 Aud on the camera anyway).  Yet despite saying this, you can bet I'll read all the articles and watch all the videos 🙄
I wonder about the industry: the cost of these things contines to skyrocket, yet I've not put my prices up for 2 years.  And clients seems increasingly happy to embrace the cheap and shitty.   (I live in rural Australia: your experience may differ😬😁)

No. The whole point for me and for millions of FF mirrorless owner in the world is to have a do it all camera. I hate to carry 2 body with me on 60 miles trek at 3000m in the mountain or on summit attempts. Granted, not millions of shooters are mountaineers, but millions of them are travelers, and hate traveling with 2 cameras if one could do it all.

So not only I want to carry 1 body, but I want great IBIS. It remains to be seen if the A7SIII IBIS is the same shit as the A7RIV, or excellent like the R5. It remains to be seen if they included Venice color science, and completely changed the body ergonomics and buttons and menus.

Since I never shoot more than 1 min clips I do not care about the overheating. BUT, if Sony could have a quad bayer that gives me 12mpx video and 48mpx stills, with much better ergonomics / buttons / menus, better color and better IBIS (basically matching the R5 on those aspects) then I would stay with Sony for 2 reasons: I am already in the ecosystem and I would rather have 12mpx video / 48 mpx stills with the obvious advantages it brings (rolling shutter...) than having just 45mpx.

However, I value MUCH more having great IBIS, great body feeling and pleasure of using the camera than having a quad bayer only. It's not like Canon is much behind in spec like always before.

I remember an article from @Andrew Reid about how important having a camera with a good body and interface is, that it gives you the will to actually go and shoot and that bodies with poor ergonomics do not inspire you. I kind of agreed at the time. It seems you do not take this into account anymore in your R5/A7S III comments Andrew. I understand the frustration you have with overheating and your pro work that requires long recording, but I am sure you have plenty of gear for that job already and I am sure you will very much enjoy shooting a lot with the R5 for creative short videos.

Those are good points and helps us documentary/event people see that perspective. OTOH I'm not sure we have complete info on the camera. Is the thermal issue *only* when rolling or partially when it's powered up? Does it never happen when using an external recorder, or just not as quickly? I did a lot of narrative work last year and (like you) never rolled more than about 90 seconds. I see that point. But my old Sony A7R2 would partially heat up just from being powered on, which gave the heat buildup a "head start" when rolling commenced, making a shutdown happen faster. Is the R5 like that?
Also unknown is the cumulative heat buildup based on shooting duty cycle. Even if you never shoot a 30 min. interview, if you do numerous 2-min b-roll shots in hot weather, will the R5 hit the thermal limit?
More than the initial thermal time limit, the cooldown times seem troubling, esp. if hot ambient conditions amplify this.
