Emanuel reacted to fuzzynormal in A7RII - E-M1 IBIS Test
Well, here's a very simple shoot as an example. I did this for a friend over the weekend on a moments notice. It was basically a 1 hour shoot. I grabbed shots as fast as possible.
Sure, I could have placed a tripod in a lot of spots and had the subject wait for me to compose... Or I could have let her do her thing and I would just follow, and still get cool shots along the way.
With the EM5II, I just did the latter
Slider shots without a rig, static shots without a tripod...it's a very nice capability to have.
Granted, this isn't groundbreaking stuff, but this particular camera does give me some worthwhile footage.
I don't know what else to say. It's fun for me. That's all

I was skeptical of Olys 5-axis. Then I used it.
I can do stuff handheld with discipline that looks indistinguishable from a slider or something shot on a tripod.
Its creative freedom. And it's a tool that allows me to get shots really quick when run'n'gun'in'.
It's not perfect, but it is very useful for a certain style.
I do docu style, so it fits. I don't use it for EVERYTHING, but what I do use it for, it's pretty nice.
I sure as hell don't think that ANY camera I decide to use makes me in any way more accomplished of a shooter. I'm very camera agnostic. But I do like Oly's 5-axis feature. It's a fun tool to have. It's almost like cheating. It allows me to get that good framing easier...
Mind you, if you kinda stink as a shooter an EM5II isn't going to magically make you frame better compositions, but if you have some compositional skill, it'll let you grab those shots in a quick and practical way.

Me and my friends have a technique we call the Polish Steadicam. It's the guy with the steadiest hands and a wide angle lens, who we push around on a little cart. We look like clowns on set, but the results are great.

Right. But, no need! Go on post... ;-)

exactly. It's obvious that a mechanical shutter can't have a longer exposure than 360degrees or the full length of the frame. It may be a wrapper, I couldnt give two hoots really, I see on my camera 1/5th of a second. the electronic shutter is open for 1/5th of a second, then closes, exposing 5 frames at a time. it could be that its 5fps/360degree but for the purposes of this topic, for the final time, as far as I am aware the Sony cameras allow the slowest 'shutter speed' to be selected during video mode. the effect cannot be achieved without this setting.

Emanuel reacted to agolex in Slowest shutter speed in video mode
Might be so with a mechanical shutter, but we don't know what exactly is going on with an electronic shutter, do we? There's software involved and it's hard to know what's being done in camera, there might be some magical readout mojo going on which you might not be able to emulate in post.

Funny, if they would crap their product... and some group of geeks would develop some crazy hack to lift their limits, then would be a terrific steal...? : D
C'mon, where do you find the best tech in the smallest 8K/4K package (yes, price included) ??!
Let's get a fair perspective on here, give a break to your (d)efective nonsense : ) With or without they had somehow clippled their hot stove in form of mirrorless camera only for SELLING their higher price range, they've offered the best they can in a REALLY portable capture device -- add external recording and stop whining about your VIRTUAL sex life with a girl you're not even thinking to date, go figure to live with! : D
(BTW, I didn't buy it yet, I had just placed a pre-order so to comply now, this camera will stand by me and letting run 'n gun no matters how many quirks we're still reading in these pages...
...only because you'd actually and merely love to pay it for a perfect angel just like heaven!)

Emanuel reacted to Francesco Spiezia in A7Rii Overheat attempt//band aid
So first off I come from Live Events so my testing of the A7Rii falls into the pocket of shooting all day 1-8min clips and not getting a second chance. For that reason I am going to say upfront I would never walk into live event without a second body strapped to my hip especially with this hot 4K little monster. Now I shoot 1-8min takes because I lived through the 7D days of clips deleting at random so honestly I shoot smaller sized clips based out of habit. Even for toasts etc, we have multi cameras running so its no biggie.
So I decided to run the new camera until I got the notorious temp icon of dread..... My take on that moment is what if I was on a shoot how would I adapt aside from dipping the camera in ice or holding a cold beer to the of the back screen.
Shooting 4K 100mbs FF 3200ISO Image Stabilizer On
I received the temp icon at roughly the 25min mark shooting 3-5min clips back to back. I quickly switched the battery out and than decided to use just use the viewfinder(not as heat heavy on the camera). I was able to from that moment shoot 3-5min clips for 40minutes without a single warning. I also switched over to S35 somewhere in the middle just to see if it would heat things up. Total Runtime was 65minutes without having to shut down /cool down. If my card did not fill up I would have liked to go even further.
I know its not ideal, but if the moment presents itself swapping a battery and switching viewfinders is a whole lot better than waiting for the camera to cool off. This also does give me hope on the A7Sii body re design to fix the issue as its lurking around the screen more than the sensor.

Emanuel reacted to Sekhar in Did Samsung just kill the A7rii?
Yeah, but trying to nail down the specifics, like what lens (Samsung vs. other, OIS vs. no OIS, 1.02 vs. 1.03, etc.), what situations (long vs. short), what kind of movements, etc. I will experiment myself and post, and hopefully we can put all the experiences together to come with a guide of sorts. Everyone with NX1: please test and post your experiences/footage!

Emanuel reacted to TheRenaissanceMan in Which to buy used Sony a7s or a7r ii
Yeah, I'd say it depends on your priorities. If you love to crop, use lenses without IS handheld, and regularly print 24x36 and larger, the A7RII is for you. If you prefer cleaner low-light images, take long video clips that can't be paused for overheating, and don't mind an external recorder, the A7S is becoming a pretty good value.
Always decide what you want out of a new purchase first. Then, and only then, should you start perusing cameras to find one that fits your wish list.

Emanuel reacted to DBounce in Which to buy used Sony a7s or a7r ii
Well I have to disagree... Sort of... The a7rii is just as much about 42mp images as anything else. So if the goal is an all around camera, then the clear choice is the A7rii.

I've seen Olympus' IBIS to beat Sony (but no 4K, no 8K), Samsung's AF to beat Sony (but again, something to not offer: 8K for large prints in this case). The whole point IMO is the fact no camera is better than the other but, that camera is better than the other for your needs. My whole beef, actually.

Emanuel reacted to The Chris in Why A7Rii is a nogo for landscape
Making definitive statements about it being useless for anything is complete hyperbole and a gross overreaction. The hot pixels are in every Sony sensor camera. If you take a long exposure with the lens cap on, push the exposure 5 or 6 stops and lift the shadows all the way and then blow up the image 400% there will be noise. Try the same thing with Canon or and m43 and it won't be any better. You can see the same thing on the A7s and D810 here: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1380165/2 and its also in the A7r files.
Capture One easily eliminates all of this with no loss in detail. You can do long exposure noise reduction in cam and it takes a black frame and does the same thing. This does impact people stacking 200 images of star trails as that's not a practical workflow. But for most its a simple fix. Really.
All of these declarations are such overreactions. First its the greatest camera ever! Then it overheats shooting non-stop 4k so its junk! Now there's noise in the shadows its useless! Take a step back, the reality is definitely somewhere in the middle. I've seen some pretty damn impressive landscape images from the A7rII and there will be many more. In no way are any of today's cameras holding you back.
The A7rII certainly has warts, but I've said it before and I'll say it again - its a powerhouse camera that can replace the A7s/A7r and an external recorder for most - except for those that need lots of continuous 4k recording. But it still adds IBIS, 4k internal, better AF, faster startup time, 42mp (18 in crop mode) more adjustments (like minimum SS with auto ISO, assignable record button) and so on...

Emanuel reacted to jax_rox in Why A7Rii is a nogo for landscape
I don't feel I'm getting defensive - I just think this forum is quick to jump to the most ridiculous conclusions about products, and completely rule out products based on one, single, unscientific 'test' done by someone who is likely a newbie.
That RED Dragon footage I saw that was insanely noisy, had blown-out highlights, crushed dynamic range, terrible skin tones etc. Instead of saying 'wow, how terrible is the RED Dragon, I'm never going to use it, it's a weak camera with terrible colours, and dynamic range and awful low-light ability' - I watched footage from others and did my own tests and came to the conclusion that you can get really beautiful looking images out of the RED Dragon, and that awful footage I saw was simply user error.
I've seen 5D stills that are awful. I could have said 'man the 5D is just a terrible camera to use for portraits, obviously.' Of course, we all know that to be untrue - the 5D is a great stills camera. I'm not going to judge it based on a small number of people who aren't photographers, or don't know how to use it or expose their photos.
No camera is perfect, and learning more about how they perform in certain situations is always good, and allows you to find strategies to compensate - but let's get some perspective here. And lets do our own tests before jumping to random conclusions. As I've said many times - people here talk at length about how 'awful' the colours from the A7s is. I'm yet to have the same issues. I do have some issues sometimes when skin is under-exposed, but overall I don't get anything like the issues that many seem to have here. By doing my own tests, I've figured out what I can get out of the camera, and how to compensate for other things in order to get great images.
I didn't look at posts from people who were only using the camera for the first time and couldn't expose their images properly to base my decision on purchasing it.

I'd say wait a bit more for some more long term reviews of the a7rII comes out and make your choice then.

And I apologize if I posted this already I've been very busy. I tested this again multiple times last night but instead of triggering recording on the camera I triggered recording on the shogun. And the result was that I could record continuously until one of the batteries ran out, usually the cameras, sometimes the shoguns. At most I got about an hour and a half with no overhear warnings; when it shut down is because the battery was exhausted ( as per the message on the screen). I did not test on external power. If I triggered the recording in the camera, making sure that internal recording was off, it would overheat in 30 minutes. I don't know what's going on here and have passed my thoughts to Atomos. My theory is that processing is kicking in when you click record even though it's not dumping to the card but if you just let it roll without hitting the record button on the camera you get the output right from the sensor. I tested the same theory with the RX 100 Mark four. I got the same result. That camera records for less than five minutes before overheating if you record it on camera but if you just roll from The HDMI you can get an hour out of it before the battery dies. Again, with no overheating. Weird."
