Emanuel reacted to Davide DB in Vimeo, End of an Era
Once upon a time, Vimeo.
For reasons officially unknown (I'll come back to this later) Vimeo stopped being, for us Europeans, a community of video storytellers. (As it still likes to call itself).
Basically, in certain regions of the world you can no longer use the video search function and at the same time you can no longer browse other users' videos.
I can only see and search my own videos and eventually see a video of another user only if I have its link. Even if I know his name I cannot search for him. I can only see his profile if I know his exact url.
This post sums up what happened:
https://shortverse.beehiiv.com/p/vime-nooo
I am so angry.
I noticed it by accident and I also looked like an idiot because I as well as thousands of other users thought it was a bug. No communication at all. Out of the blue. The entire UE community lost. Membership fee is the same for everyone but I have most of the features disabled.
Those who read this thread and, for example, have an account in the U.S. or other countries not affected by this ban might think that this does not affect them.
But it absolutely does not!
I have several friends in the U.S. who use their Vimeo account for showreels, basically a videocentric Linked-in. In their profile they have written "available for hire." Here, you must know that their profile is no longer searchable from banned countries. And we don't even know which ones they are. I can only access a video of theirs via direct link but I can't go to their profile or search them by name via the search function.
This is my following people page:
I can see their names but I cannot click on their profile icons. Sounds like a joke. What is the point of these lists now?
Just imagine my frustration, I've been a member for 13 years and I've developed a whole network of relationships over all these years and now I can't even see the profiles of people I've collaborated with, anymore.
Think about it before you renew your subscription!

im in belgium and also affected. This makes the site mostly useless imo

I agree with you but as I told you there's no difference among my Italian subscription plan and another unaffected by this ban. So why I have to pay the same and I'm not entitled to know who is affected?
I'm not able to connect to my partners anymore.
This is the last message from Vimeo support:
As part of our compliance with local regulations, message, follow, search, for hire card, collaborator card and collections in activity card are not available in some regions, which is why you are not able to see them on Vimeo.com.
While we are unable to discuss specific regulatory details, please know that our decision was made to ensure full compliance with applicable EU laws and regulations. We are committed to maintaining a high level of legal and ethical responsibility.
Then I discover that Emanuel Portuguese account is not affected. To my knowledge Portugal is 100% inside the EU regulations.

Emanuel sorry for getting your name wrong but I don't understand what you are getting at.
I am in Italy and Vimeo does not work as it used to. From the one article that summarizes what happened, I read that the change to the terms of the contract was made for several European countries:
Several European users have the same problem and this is confimed by Viemo support which states "this is not a bug".
I am glad it works in Portugal. Vimeo support keeps replying to everyone that “the service has been modified in some regions” but refuses to specify which are these regions. Hence the idea that the whole European Union is affected by the change in terms of service.
I have been using Vimeo for my work/passion for 13 years and have my entire private archive online there. No use creating another account and using it secretly with a VPN.
Ciao

Emanuel reacted to Tim Sewell in FX30 first outing
Went to Manchester for the firs time (at 60!) and it's very photogenic - I will definitely be returning (with a tripod).

Emanuel reacted to Tim Sewell in FX30 first outing
As far as the FX30 goes - well it's an excellent little camera. Very easy to use, produces a nice image and with the latest update even has shutter angle! A few of the lower light shots needed some NR adding in Resolve, but nothing outrageous. For the video above I didn't use Cineprint. CST, NR, Balance, Contrast, A dab of Film Look Creator then out through the DVR Kodak 2383 D55 LUT, via a CST to Cineon.

Emanuel reacted to bjohn in Prove me wrong... 10bit is a load of B****cks
I assume the old Canon D Mark II was 8-bit, right? It was used to shoot this (which was actually a clothing advert masquerading as a short film; the trailer was released and the other segments are available on Vimeo but no full-length film was ever released):

This music video was shot on the 5D II, still looked good today

Emanuel got a reaction from Juank in Is Panasonic rethinking high-end full frame mirrorless line-up?
I don't see anything wrong on this release TBH...
Only lacks 4K 120fps.
But, you have no time limit if you need. Promising dynamic range on FF small and lightweight form factor.
5.9K recording from HDMI + anamorphic 3536x2656/50p there, affordable price...
Well, I even think I will be tempted myself to buy it, one of these days ; ) After all, it will match the inventory of fine glass for my 6K FF Blackmagic camera too!

Emanuel reacted to Chrille in Next to be obsolete: Making a living
I am not sure i understand what kind of movie you actually have in mind. I am with you that due to the recent streaming wars the market is oversaturated at the moment and this boom is over but on the other hand my watchlist is growing longer and longer with great films and series.
And of course that's not the fault of the EOSHD Forum - but the forum has been a great documentation of the change that has happened in the recent years.

Emanuel reacted to Andrew - EOSHD in Next to be obsolete: Making a living
We wanted democratisation of the art of filmmaking not so much the business of it.
It is important in the business end to always have demand outstrip supply. When anyone can pick up a cheap piece of kit and go and shoot adverts, then you have a problem.
Evidently not everyone can pick up a cheap piece of kit and shoot something artistically interesting, so it's still of value to do that.
The problem with that however is that you have to be very fortunate to make any money doing so.
The film industry has put group-think, profits and franchise filmmaking before creative interest, and is now struggling with an unappealing product that is watered down and too much in abundance, i.e. mediocrity in creative terms now passes for the gold standard as long as it has a high production value and gets made by one of the big streaming channels.
It doesn't grab people's attention in a world that is very demanding on one's time and attention.
This isn't the fault of the EOSHD Forum btw.
There's the technology side which is causing the supply and demand problem in the low-end of production and the lukewarm content, oversupply of material killing the high-end of production.

If you were a 22 years old vlogger, you would buy FX30. Not because its a better camera, but because you've seen it in hand of many of other vloggers you are trying to replicate their style of work. Sony marketing has established a collective belief that if you wanna do video, you've got to use Sony. You can't beat a better marketing with better IBIS.

I can't help but feel panasonic didn't do anything wrong here. They had a small announcement, so they didn't hype it. The only hype was the outlandish rumors a bunch of people started throwing around. There was no reason to believe there would be a big cinema announcement... if panasonic had a big announcement, they would have hyped it themselves.
What we got was a bunch of firmware updates, a refresh of a low end camera, and a pretty cool new compact lens. I'd actually love their new 18-40 for backpacking trips. Again, if they had indicated in the slightest that there would be a major announcement, that would be a different story.
Kind of amazing if people get disappointed that the thing they made up didn't happen.

Emanuel reacted to ND64 in Is Panasonic rethinking high-end full frame mirrorless line-up?
Not always. If the one who leaks the specs is a photographer who has access to pre-production unit, would exaggerate about the experience, like "AF is two generation ahead of the competition". You know its probably not true, but you know why he would make that statement. That's different from a bullshitter that think sensor resolution determines the price, or a single model changes overall market share in a meaningful way, and does it instantly!

...aren't all camera rumors written by children?

Another vote for Camera Conspiracies.
Doesn’t get everything right but he’s having fun and trying. Transparent and honest and not afraid to make fun of himself. Very refreshing in the 2024 Douchtube space. He will take a theory and go out and shoot to test it.
I’m tired of camera reviews and gear videos but I watch these 5 channels pretty consistently and find inspiration here. Some thoughts below.

What drives me crazy these days is the lack of originality and this insane copycat culture. A trend will start and all these people jump on the craze and suddenly it’s everywhere.
Over using promist and “cinebloom” filters. Low saturation and washed out grading to replicate film. Too much film grain added. Nostalgic for an era many of these gen Z never experienced.
Holding the lav mic or transmitter in their hand while filming themselves. Using an old school handheld mic to be ironic and different.
Neon tube lights behind them at their butcher block workbench desk from Home Depot. Then cutting to close up shots with the plastic engineering mat desk protector.
It’s just gotten so, so boring to hear people read the camera specs to me off the website with no original thinking or unique take on any of it.

They're all pretty bad/cringeworthy now, but sure - here's one where you can see me confused by the Osmo Raw.
Apparently airflow matters a lot. While it ran for about 13 minutes the other day and merely felt warm to the touch, I set it up by the window of my house today. The house is about 25C inside, but there's no breeze like there was by the river aside from it being a bit warmer. After 12:10 of recording ProRes 120p, the BlackMagic app stopped recording due to high temperature. When I picked up the phone, it was uncomfortably hot and so was the CF adapter.
So rolling long takes at indoor concerts doesn't seem like it'll be a thing!
