rommex got a reaction from Henry Gentles in Freebie: Android app -- Director's Viewfinder for BMPCC
Hey all,
I developed an Android app that serves you as director's viewfinder.
Having your Android device with you, you can see exact framing of your Pocket camera on location, applying your lenses and boosters. Planning your lens setup has never been easier!
Please check out the app: Play Market
The app has ads in it, though not too nasty. You can always switch to a paid Magic Universal Viewfinder that has no ads, no limits and lots of cameras supported -- like BMCC, BMPC4K, 5D Mark III and 4/3 sensored-cameras.
Enjoy and feel free to give your feedback!
Thanks!

rommex got a reaction from dishe in In depth test - 5D Mark III and 7D Raw vs Blackmagic Pocket vs GH3
Andrew,
Thanks for the review. I'm curious about Canon 50D -- I remember you took some interest in ML implementation on that camera.
Some time ago I made a brief comparison in terms of DR between BMCC and Canon 50D (it was published at ML forum), and my wild guess was that 50D is 1-1.5 stop behind BMCC in terms of DR.
So what do you think of 50D? Don't you think it would be a more appropriate choice over 7D? Thanks for your opinion in advance!
PLEASE PLEASE notice this post buried in fan-boys' nice fights ))

Keep in mind that if your monitor does not have a "Camera" or crop function, then the output will be 4:3 as the 50D does not output in 16:9 . . .

Cool, that's good news!
I fixed the frame skipping on my anamorphic video. The image sequences were imported as 25 fps and my project was 24 fps. Simple as that. Reuploaded the correct file:
http://vimeo.com/67023056
That noise test I posted earlier has gone completely viral since it was featured on EOSHD... It's on DPreview.com, Engadget, Cnet Australia, Petapixel and a lot more websites :D
Bummer the video isn't completely correct, as I found out the H2 setting doesn't actually do anything, it is H1.. I will fix that tomorrow in the video and reupload a file with more footage shot at H1 (6400). Will try to do some underexposed shots and push them to 12800, 25600, etc ;) Curious how far I can go...

Who said it was? I don't think I've heard that from anyone but you!
. . . and it's not a perfect camera . . . This is not a camera to take to a time-constrained corporate shoot. It's a "LOVE PROJECT" camera.
It's a nice (better than average) stills camera, and a very nice 14-bit RAW video camera - oh, did I mention it costs $400?? -

Yeah, I have to fix my workflow. Will try to re-upload the video later, it's a lot of work though... :)
Probably will shoot something new today.

Finally! Graded, exported, edited, uploaded...

Details on Vimeo. Make sure to download the original file.
/Edit: By the way.. you might notice some skipping frames, that's probably my fault with making the image sequences. Had some trouble with that... I didn't experience frame skipping during recording.

Please download and check if the camera skips frames, or if I did something wrong in post. Big chance it's the last option :)
If the camera skips frames, that will be fixed. It didn't drop any frame during recording at 1280x960p.

@MKjaer: I know... I never liked the 50D because of the poor iso performance/banding. I am really surprised it is this good. There is banding at H2, definitely not perfect. But it's so much better than I would expect.
Here is my test, you can download the original file in Vimeo:

rommex reacted to Sean Cunningham in BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III
It is confusing, even looking through the ML thread. Near as I can guess it was the earliest versions, perhaps, that were successfully writing using the YUV422 and raw wasn't working but at some point perhaps they switched to writing true raw. Somewhere in that 30+page thread there might be the "eureka!" moment. I didn't find it.
Confirmed though, what they're grabbing from, at least, is 14bit RGGB. Stu didn't like the early mix of terminology either and wasn't going to stand for it so he got a direct response: prolost (http://prolost.blogspot.com/2005/05/log-is-new-lin.html)
Also something to keep in mind, that's been distorted some through some overzealous comparisons. This is 14bit linear color. The BMCC records 12bit logarithmic color. It takes 14 linear bits to equal 12 logarithmic bits so they're essentially recording the same precision from a math standpoint (with theories over logarithmic sample steps being a better representation of some aspects of photography while linear steps offer advantages in others).

On another note, thanks for putting the "Comment on this article" back under each post's title! So much easier to just get to the discussions. -

How can anyone fail to be happy when someone like Francis Ford Coppola appreciates their work? -
rommex reacted to Andrew Reid in Sony to produce first full frame DSLR with 1080/60p and EVF
Actually maybe that is a bit unfair.
Canon
- Added very low quality crop mode on 600D. Then took it away for 650D
- Added a hinge to their low end cameras, but not the 5D Mark III
- Added a stereo mic and AF for the first time on 650D after 3 years
- Added modern AF motors to STM lenses this year... Although it is not silent or internally focussing, so useless
- Cancelled funding of London's Converge Festival in 2010. Dito Gear and Zacuto stepped into save it. Sadly no longer with us
- Closed down Canon Filmmakers dot com
- Tried to close down EOSHD dot com
- Want DSLR video enthusiasts to stump up an extra $11,500 for increase in image quality
- Refuse to join mirrorless party. Proposed system based on very old sensor technology, dated by 3 years and available already in G1x
- Zero EVF tech on consumer cameras
- Added manual audio control to 7D firmware, after 2 years
- Seem incapable of upgrading APS-C sensor technology within 3 years
- Milking 1 sensor for 4 cameras
- On the 5th one, adds phase detect pixels yet AF still crap in live view
- I could go on...
