DPC got a reaction from Sara Danyal in Eliminating moiré on LED screens?
Last year I filmed a corporate event where people spoke for two days in front of an 30m long wall made up of joined LED screens. This looked great to the audience but I had terrible problems with moiré. Some angles were simply impossible and the camera needed to be locked off on a tripod to minimise the problem. Spontaneous shooting was almost impossible. It was very stressful, especially because I'd been flown half way around the world to do it and didn't want to let my client down.
I'm going to cover the same event this year and, apparently, the same screen technology will be used.
So my questions are : (1) Is there any solution to this problem or do I have to live with it? (2) Does the choice of camera / sensor technology play a role? (3) Is there any on lens filtration that might help? (4) Am I right in thinking that the only real solution would be to cover the screens with an anti-moiré diffusion screen?
My research suggests that the real problem is that the screen used wasn't really appropriate for being filmed.
    Thanks in advance!

Just a small comment on the Huawei / Leica thing : I have a P20 Pro and the 40 mpx raw files can be wonderful but you need to do absolutely massive post production work to eliminate the severe vignetting and color casts from the "Leica" lens.

Except that when you have rigged up the phone you loose all the advantages linked to its size. I mean, if I'm going to add a Beastgrip Pro + DOF adapter + a Canon DSLR lens, why not just use a "real" camera?

This thread, from the top. Nobody seemed particularly interested. You are right to be.

Point taken. Should have been more attentive. Trying to do too much at the same time. Neither looks particularly good...

I'm not sure the video supports the writing here. There's not much movement to show the virtues of the in camera stabilisation. It'a a long low wide shot with a few cutaways inserted. There is a colour difference between camera angles (magenta vs green). At times the focus is significantly off. I don't see the image quality described at all.  Sorry.

That's great! This is a trailer for something not yet made, right? What I particularly liked was being pulled into the story and no longer looking at the colours. Very unusual for EOSHD ;-)

Me too. And I'm convinced that the only lasting skills you can acquire - composition, narration, editing - can be developed without needing expensive kit. I'm particularly interested at the moment in how smartphones are being used by TV stations for news and documentary work. Not just "citizen" images of breaking events but fully structured pieces.
I forgot to put this in my quick list, by the way :
Oh, and there's a lot to be learned from looking at the videos on Instagram. Like just how much of a story you can tell in 15 seconds or so...

If you want a job done, do it yourself... Here's more although I'm very reluctant to encourage watching anything where the presenters say "Ignite",  "Here's what happened" or "Sneak peek". And then there's the absurdity of starting a video by asking "What's up guys?" when you'll never get a reply. But everyone seems to do that :

How about a thread of resources pointing to "frugal" films. Finished pieces made with smartphones, consumer camcorders, you get the picture. Not tests. Films. Because that what excites me most at the moment.  Here's a few pointers from me. You know how the internet works, I don't have to baby you with links ;-) Google : Ruslan Pelykh Leica, Boat Magazine iPhone, BFM TV Paris iPhone, Filmic Pro's video portfolio (Dark Waves especially), Tangerine (but everybody must have seen that by now), #mojo. My intuition says it's time to look at whats getting finished, broadcast, shared, simply but beautifully and take inspiration from that. Thoughts? Because 72 pages on how to get the best out of the GX80 / 85 just isn't right ;-)

Absolutely! But there is something worse : watching your Sony A7R II overheat and stop working as well. Or working for the first time with a sound guy who is rude to the client you have been cultivating for the past year because he thinks they're badly organised...
@HelsinkiZim - Don't worry, your frustrations are normal, this is very hard to do alone.

Probably for the camera, certainly for the person. But my experience is that certain things only go wrong on a job ;-).

I subscribe to your post. Anybody can shot with a RED and make a bad movie so I'd like to see examples of the opposite too.
three minutes of pure cinematic, narrative, acting, conflict gold. I love this film. At least they finished, it's in youtube and has more than half a million views in this iteration. It's humbling. Horrible, fun and humbling.

My production company produced this microbudget feature, shot on the GH4. Only have the :30 teaser available right now. But the feature will be released next year.

A sub-forum for low/zero budget filmmaking as a whole would be nice with the cheapest options in every filmmaking area, and this type of stuff too. I often feel a little dorky asking for the dirt cheap gear here, when it's such a broad range of people, and I don't want to clutter the forum. I'll have to google those. Tangerine was surprisingly good
