johnnymossville got a reaction from nahua in Panasonic GH4 4K Production Diary - Day 2 - Test Footage
Here's my take on the Andy shot. Simple white balance correction and some minor adjustment of the master levels.

@jonpais personally, I love panasonic colors.

holy cow the porsche clip looks,.... Yow!
Borrowed the holy cow line from AaronChicago. Just put the clip in after-effects and in my excitement threw a bunch of magic bullet looks at it and I'm drooling.
OK, now I just dropped an Eastman 5298 EXR 500T film stock on it and I'm in love.....

johnnymossville got a reaction from nahua in Canon 4K refresh - C200 and C400 coming at NAB?
A C200 with a prores codec would be a beautiful thing indeed. Will the price will be that "entry level" though? I expect it will be similarly priced to the current C100 if not slightly more. Of course, entry level is all relative isn't it?
It looks as though Canon is really going to try to move dslr video shooters over into buying something from the C series. Can't say I blame them, they've got the dslr market pretty well covered as far as dominating sales.

Okay Panasonic, I hereby officially request that you TAKE ALL OF MY MONEY!!! And since I don't have to spend $2K on the brick, I'll take 2 GH4s, thank you very much!!
A 4K, two camera setup is in my very near future!

@Orangenz the rolling shutter on that video made me seasick. I wouldn't touch that camera.

johnnymossville reacted to etidona in Panasonic GH4 pricing official - $1698 body only, $1998 for the external 10bit / XLR box
My dream: 4096x4096 square sensor.
16mega stills, no more vertical grip needed, the flash stays always on top of the sensor, no horizontal crop in 4k video mode, shallow dof, better wide, better low light. Theoretically all the lenses should cover the area.
Shooting square photos is fun, someone ever tried a 6x6 film camera?
Who knows when and if that dream will be true!

johnnymossville reacted to apefos in Panasonic GH4 pricing official - $1698 body only, $1998 for the external 10bit / XLR box
For the GH5 Panasonic needs to develop a 4096 x 3072 native resolution sensor to allow the 4096 x 2160 video without horizontal crop in the micro four thirds sensor, better shallow dof, better wide angle and better low light due to increase in pixel size. Also it will be good for still photos because 4096 x 3072 is 12.6 megapixels, enough for most photo work. Dynamic range increase to reach ARRI is the most expected improvement in the Panasonic now... maybe this will be implemented in the organic sensor they are developing. And why not 200Mbps IPB in 4k?

Hey guys,
A couple of stores in London will have a working GH4 with a Panasonic rep this weekend. The dates are Friday 14 March, Saturday 15 March and Sunday 16 March 2014 from 10-4pm at the following stores:
Jessops, 129-131 Oxford Street, London, W1D 2HU Park Cameras, 53-54 Rathbone Place, London, W1T 1JR Full press release here: http://news.panasonic.co.uk/news/panasonic-announces-preview-campaign-for-dmc-gh4-79357
I'll be there to check it out on Saturday around midday.
Looks like Panasonic are also giving away a free battery and battery grip with every GH4 purchased! They are really gunning for it!
Adrian

It's not really comparable to the C100, it's much better than that.

johnnymossville reacted to jgharding in Panasonic: Consumer market will lead on 4K
I think it's only sports and other real life events people want to feel they're really watching that benefit. 120fps 4K sport or historical political speech is probably great! Or a concert maybe or theatre.
Not so much a film drama...
Because with a film you'll feel like you're really on set rather than in the world of the movie. Which sucks...
As long as it's divisible by standard frame-rates and we can can turn off the frame-smoothing interpolation stuff it's all good!
Last time I used a giant Samsung plasma in an office to play back a film, I went through and turned off so many things! Frame smoothing, automatic dynamic contrast, ridiculous over saturation, some strange colour correction, a weird sharpening mode.
So as long as you can turn it off, all is good...

johnnymossville reacted to Andrew Reid in News round-up including a look at the 70D's image quality
Take a look at this - http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon_EOS_60D-vs-Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-GH3/score
They have weighted camera popularity as 100 in the points scheme. Insane.
Thus 60D scores 90 and GH3 just 5 for that, whilst image quality (based on DXOMark which only measures the sensor and not video or image processing) is weighted far less at 45.
Had the 60D not been handed that 90 for simply being a Canon, the GH3 would have won on the final tally 96.4 to 83.2 and that is not even taking video into account which is vastly better featured and better quality on the Panasonic.

johnnymossville reacted to Andrew Reid in News round-up including a look at the 70D's image quality
I have never read such an ill conceived comparison as that Snapsort one.
60D has built in auto-focus motor? No Snapsort... try the Nikon equivalent.
They list flip out screen on 60D an advantage over GH3, whilst both have them.
"Great battery life" on 60D applies to stills only with the LCD turned off. GH3 has the better battery life for video and live-view shooting.
They say the 60D has faster autofocus. Ha. Try AF in video / live-view on that vs GH3. I'll think you'll find it is 5 seconds worth of hunting around vs 0.2sec.
Another gem... 60D has apparently "much more lenses available". Nope. The GH3 has more if you count adapters. The mount is much more flexible and can take more lenses.
Then under GH3 advantages they claim 60D has no image stabilisation. WTF? Never heard of Canon IS lenses?
They list 18 advantages to the GH3 and only 9 for the 60D and claim the GH3 has better image quality and more dynamic range, but yet rate the 60D at 89 and the GH3 at 49 and claim the 60D wins.
This is what happens when you get reviewers plucking stats from the internet without having ever touched a camera.
So yeah... Panasonic have their work cut out it seems. Half the world are this ignorant as well.

johnnymossville reacted to Ben Prater in News round-up including a look at the 70D's image quality
This is a filmmaking forum. Many cameras like the 60D do both stills and photography. We are primarily interested in how well a camera system works for shooting video. Stills are fairly irreverent around here.
Here's the bottom-line if you want to get into video production and are choosing a camera system: the investment comes after the camera body purchase. If you go with 60d/70d, you are going to begin investing in Canon glass. If you go with GH3 or BMPCC (pocket camera), you are going to start buying mFT glass. If you go with Nikon, etc...
With the advance in tech, we are all tossing our camera bodies every 18 months to buy the new latest-and-greatest. However, our lens set becomes our old friends for years to come.
If you want to get started in video production, you can't go wrong buying a used t2i/t3i/t4i/60d/7d -- and throwing a 50mm f1.8 on the front and going nuts. I shot money-making jobs with this combo for more than a year when I started.
If you want to buy new -- you have a handful of good options, but for the dedicated filmmaker -- you want the GH3 or the BMPCC. Why? Beyond the stellar image quality for the price -- they are the only bodies in the price range to include a headphone jack.
If you want a new camera today, get the GH3 -- without question.

johnnymossville reacted to Andrew Reid in GH2 shot sci-fi Upstream Color breaks $300,000 mark at the US box office
How can you look soft and over sharp at the same time?
Budget was $50k I heard.
Including funding his own distribution.
It's a stunning achievement. Not even released on BluRay or in rest of the world yet. Word of mouth is still growing for the movie. By the time the year is out he's likely to have taken over $1m easily.
I think he'll handle Europe / UK in same way he handled the US. Film festival, promotion online, word of mouth, then theatrical run based on some healthy buzz.

...which in the case of this story, the camera made the movie look like it could have been shot on equipment almost none of us could afford on our own. If this movie was shot on an iPhone it would probably still work to a certain extent, but it wouldn't have looked anywhere near as good.

johnnymossville reacted to Jean-Marc Abela in The Hobbit HFR Review - my verdict on 48 frames per second
I agree with your conclusion. I'm happy to have seen it in 2D/24fps as i'm sure the 3D would have bugged me out after a short while. It isn't suited for the storytelling and i think storytelling is what they forgot about.. How to best tell the story of the hobbit. But perhaps 12 year old kids would love it, but 2:45 running time seems long for kids. Too bad, lost opportunity... where as perhaps the next TRON in 48fps 3D would be fantastic.. as long as it has a good story. Story Story Story.
