Not tryin to be a troll here but my first reaction was the same as JHines, I felt that the BMPC 4k wasn't as sharp and detailed as a 4K footage is suppose to look like.
And am not talking about the grading or time of day it was shot. The "Genesis" video from the 5D3 ML RAW does look sharper and more detailed than this BMPC 4K.

Maybe it's just the grading but maybe that extra stop of DR could have delivered more details, even more in the shadows, it looks cinematic but it ended up a bit too contrasty for me.

It's disturbing that no Japanese company really wants to push technology that's readily available to the masses. How hard is it to put in a gig or two of fast ram for the camera to write to and them dump to a slower memory card? How hard is it to put audio meters on the display? How hard is it to record 4K at 24p? I'm tired of Sony, Canon, Panasonic and every Japanese brand that continues to pump out bullshit 8-bit 1080p mush. Step the f--k up and do something you bunch of conservative, profit-squeezing, planned obsolescent lame companies.

Just sayin..  I'm all for different tools, looks, etc.  If you start with a raw image, you can make it look like you set it on fire if that's your aesthetic.  Andrew's talking about having an image that gives you the most freedom.  Because It's a lot harder to polish a turd if you change your mind later on.

I've been testing this today and indeed the dynamic range is insane, proper Alexa league stuff.

The problem is, I don't believe the image is usable yet.

Alex says he will optimise it but it needs very complex maths.

The problem is, some sites out there have jumped on this like it is a free pass to 14 stops of DR. It isn't. That's what happens when the people writing the hype-articles never shoot or test anything with their own two hands before blogging it.

You're mistaking raw for flatness and low contrast. Just because you have access to something doesn't mean to say you should turn it up to 11 and bring the shadows hurtling into the mids. In my opinion, most of the time blacks should be black not grey.

Check out Hunter Richards 'Alexa LUT'. It helps people avoid grading decisions like that.

JHines reacted to mtheory in David Lynch "may never make another film" due to the profit business.
Big Budget movies are now essentially two hour commercials designed to sell toys ( All of Marvel and Disney ) and product placement ( Audi in all of Iron-Man movies ) for big brands, they are no longer a product in itself the way a self-contained cinema experience was designed to be. No, movies won't whither and die, - quite the opposite, we'll see more...ALOT more movies...Marvel for example wants to churn out a superhero movie every 6 months, reboot-rinse-repeat.

It's filmmakers with an independent creative vision who are metaphorically withering and dying in Hollywood, being replaced by marketers and stylists instead. Cinema will continue to exist simply because watching a film with your friends is a social experience in itself, which does not compete with that other cool movie you will watch on your iPhone/Netflix, a new home for modern independent filmmakers.

I don't really see what the problem there. You want global audiences? They are there, at the click of a button if you are willing to forsake the champagne at the festivals and the elitist "I've been screened in a theatre, bitch" smirk and go into the most competitive global digital marketplace. Look at David Fincher, the guy did it with House of Cards, and the audiences showed up, - I'd readily view his next movie exclusively online.

And Alejandro Gonzales Innarritu shot his last film on VHS and released it online, because he is an artist who doesn't care about the festival circuit and the big honors of theatrical releases, he creates because he likes to create, and he shares using whatever medium is at hand.

Spielberg and Lynch are just afraid to adapt to this change, that's all...to them I say, grab a 5D and show us what you can do without a million dollar budget, your talent is now laid bare. David Lynch can have an army of volunteers of actors and crew if he only asked for it on Twitter, his movies can be shot with ANY camera, he could be shooting and releasing several movies a year to online audiences if he wanted to and yet he sees obstacles instead of an opportunity in digital.

Andrew thanks again for your great coverage. Your blog is such an incredible source of independent practical advise!

i am bored of these overrated japanse paied Magic Lantern critics (Read Laforet) that are just as ridiculous in their opinions as it is Canon with such piloted pricing and specs policy.

The fact is that even if I am very happy of the raw I am getting now on the 5D Mark III , I feel the strange paradox of having at the same time lost all my respect for Canon.

AMROTH 19 HOURS AGO Your comment is awaiting moderation. Totally agree with Sam Tansey here. PB as much as I respect your work and like many of your articles, I think this one comes off as more of a convoluted ramble or rant, with too many obvious things like “focus on story and shooting more†. That’s fine though I know your website isn’t just for helping others but also for ranting too.

Your response to Sam was a much nicer balanced view of everything, but your article and initial tweets were clearly negative and skeptical towards the ML hack, no matter how much you elaborate afterwards.

I honestly think you responded awkwardly to the ML update because you feel left out. This amazing development is simply not relevant to you anymore. Several years ago you probably would have jumped up and down with joy. My only camera is a Nex-5n and I wouldn’t even consider shelling out my savings for a 5DMiii until I saw the videos of this new hack. In your blog post you talk about how much you love using your 1DC which is a $12k camera. Most of us can’t afford a $12 camera with all the toys around it.

I appreciate that you try hard to relate to the newbies and the hobbyists as well as the pros and semi-pros, but maybe you should stop trying. You’re in the working pro league for a while now, with lots of experience and gear under your shoulders (due to hard work of course) and travelling the world giving seminars.
Instead of constantly elaborating and glossing over everything, I think you just should man up and confess that you reacted to the ML raw hack that way because the whole DLSR community were crazy overjoyed and you simply didn’t feel like part of the party anymore.

Not trying to provoke you with this post, just my honest opinion.

This break through is history in the making.  We are witnessing cinematography history with what Magic Lantern is doing.  I can understand the calls for caution BUT....come on now.  EVERYONE knew Canon was BS-ing with the 5D3's video capabilities. Straight BS.  I'm a Canon shooter and I'm heavily invested in rigging my 7D for video.  Mosaic Engineering filter and all the other odds and ends to help me shoot better.  I don't have to money to waste on system jumping, lens matching, adaptors, etc.  I shoot everything from weddings to music videos.  Blackmagic caught my attention but still highly annoyed me for many reasons...shipping delays, menu ergonomics, form factor, battery, ssd, resolve not running on my 2010 Imac...etc, etc. I'm not dealing with micro 4/3s right now so no gh2/gh3.  Been trolling canon rumors for updates for the 7Dmk2 and nothing.  No way in hell am I paying $6k for a C100.  This break through has made my purchasing options clear.  Hopefully they will be able to get it to work on the 7D.  With the proper lighting, ND filters, sure I can make h264 bit look great and low light wedding shooting with h264 on the 5D3 works great for me aslo...but now combined with some shots in raw.  This gives me the shooting agility that I've been looking for.

The biggest claim to relevance most of these cameras bloggers have is early access to gear. Magic Lantern doing their thing openly where anyone can download/install (or even compile alternate builds) and have a play with it really overturns that hype hierarchy and puts the celebrity camera bloggers on the defensive, playing catchup.

I don't want to sound like I'm attacking them personally, but seriously, put any of their "short films" (which are typically nothing more than camera tests anyway) up against real filmmakers and it's pitiful. I mean the whole thing is just so transparently about marketing, the people who are still hanging on their words are a lost cause anyway, unless they're new to all this and haven't figured it out yet.

It is rather amusing to see them backpedal and try to justify the positions they're taking in order to downplay a free firmware upgrade giving 14-bit RAW on a full-frame sensor. I mean just read that sentence a few times and really think about it. Laughable.

Canon charge you $12,000 for a moving JPEG photo.

Naysayers and narcissistic brand pushers can poo-poo all they want on ML's raw developments. They can hide their jealousy through honest and thoughtful posts on why the general public doesn't need what pros need. They can pretend like they are excited only just a little about the raw developments. However, their relationship with Canon is too important and they will continue to push the 8-bit cinema line as "the way to go." People are clearly seeing this and these industry heads (who gained all their popularity due to the HDSLR-revolution) are losing credibility they'll never win back. My bet is pretty soon you'll see positive posts from some of these industry heads to go into damage-control mode to try and regain the credibility they already lost. I'm so glad we have honest people like Andrew and Neumann Films who are genuinely excited for the sheer image-qualtiy now possible, FOR FREE, that was previously hidden from our 5D's by Canon.

I think those who are uninterested in this are primarily careerist secret spokesmen. Some more secret than others.

This is a good site because it's run by someone who speaks their mind and has their heart in independent film.

Bloggers giving "masterclasses" can suck a bag of dicks.

Not one of them can get off moaning at the rest of us for testing to get good quality for cheap, most of them make films that flat out suck and only get watched because they're "the first film with X new Canon" and so on, so the hypocrisy among some of the glorified bloggers out there moaning about people testing and sharing info is startling.

At least the people here share info, help each other out and take constructive criticism like grown ups, I can think of two very well known film bloggers who behave like pathetic brats whenever they're criticised or even questioned and expect everyone on their forum to personal worship every frame. They start with this "how dare you moan I give you this or free" crap

Well yes, so does all of YouTube and Vimeo, what makes these guys special?

I recently had a load of Vimeo comments deleted for suggesting that the title of a tutorial film by a well-known DSLR "tutor" didn't match the content (which was more like an advert). I wasn't rude, I simply suggested that the defensive attitude was counter productive, and that after four comments relating to it from different people, renaming should be considered.

The result: a childish rant in the description and deletion of every comment except worshipful praise. No grown-up style "yes that's a good idea, I'll consider it" or "I can see why you'd think that, but I prefer to stick with this". Nope, it was back to the playground.

It's sad really. These people are pretty much bitter also rans. I don't mind also rans, it's what most of us become, but the bitter ones? They can leave...

Whiners would say that's a retarded and unprofessional workflow. Winners are too busy gunning for their next Oscar. :D
