  1. That sucks. I wonder if you have the videos set to only appear on a specific website, and not on Vimeo, it that would still get you in trouble? I have a bunch of client music videos that could easily cause problems.

The trouble with Youtube though, is that videos played on their YouTube app (both iOS and Android), are a frame or two out of sync with the audio. It’s a joke. They play back fine in browsers though.

And as for an alternative, Flickr are good. Although I haven’t checked if they can stream 4K.

  2. I guess John’s response kind defines the difference between a blogger who makes films versus a film maker with a blog.

All I will say is, for anyone wasting time on forums posting about unreleased cameras.. Stop farting around and instead go and shoot more films on whatever camera you already own. And make that a daily ritual whenever you feel the urge to log on to a forum to see if some one replied to your last comment. Do this, and you will become a master of your art.

  3. I can think of one big name 'Youtuber' who will be using this, along with all his fans who try and clone his style.

At the end of the day though, it's already a relic of the past. Look at its biggest new feature, 60P at 1080. Sony's NEX5N could do this back in 2011, and for a much lower price.

  4. And to think of all the Sci fi films of the past portraying a future where monitor screens with scan lines and distortion covered the walls of space ships and futuristic cities. They made the future look so much more interesting. Although now it seems, the future won't be like that at all. With 8k becoming a reality, I'm sad ? that those visual displays of the future will most likely not be covered in scan lines and distortion as they were in all those classic films.

Instead, we'll be looking at screens so detailed, every strand of hair growing from someone's nose will be clearly visible with smooth edges and no aliasing.

  5. Woah, that's a lot of camera gear. Can I ask, how did you still get stuff done with all those cameras and lenses?

Personally, I would be crippled from just having to choose what camera or lenses to use for a specific job if I owned all that. And then, would probably still be stressed from the thought that maybe I'd made a bad choice, or that another another camera or lens I didn't own would be better for the job.

Anyway, good luck with the sale!

  6.

Apple have had a common OS over their mobile, tablet and desktop devices for years.

So fail to see how that is a Microsoft advantage or even unique to Microsoft.

No, they have OSX for their laptops and iOS for their mobile devices. If you want a tablet, you have to buy an iPad which doesn't let you run any full featured apps like Photoshop, FCP, Premiere, etc. If you do want to use those programs though, you also have to buy either a MacBook, or a desktop machine. That's two devices, and to transfer app data from the tablet to computer can normally only be done via iTunes, which can be an extremely painful experience.

With a Surface Pro, or even a '2 in 1' like Lenovo's Yoga range, you get one machine that's a tablet and can still run the full featured apps. That's the advantage. And if you have one of their phones, it will be the same one OS again.

Yeah because nobody with a high-end smartphone cannot do that already with their laptop!?!?

A laptop won't fit in your pocket. Seriously, think of your average consumer doesn't do any high end video editing, photography, music or whatever. They just browse facebook, Instagram, do a bit of book keeping or whatever. These kind of people will now no longer even need a computer. They could do everything on the phone while they're out. Then when they're home, all they need to do is hook the phone into a monitor or their tv, grab a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and with Continuum on the phone running the full desktop versions of their browser and office apps, their user experience would be exactly the same as if they were on a desktop or laptop. And that's huge. Less environmental waste if people are only using phones, and much less confusion for older people like my in laws, trying to familiarise themselves with multiple devices.

Why are Apple not doing this with the iPhone? If they're putting desktop performance A9 chips on their iPhones, why not let people connect them to monitor and run OSX? Possibly because they don't want to lose sales of their iPads and Macs? That's like Canon limiting the video features in their DSLR's so that people will still buy their C300 etc.

Essentially the same OS as in 2007?

You really do not have a clue about Apple devices and probably don't use them.

I'm running iOS9 on my iPad, and apart from the different font they're using, the user interface is still the same as a 2007 iPhone. There's no way of putting a big slideshow gallery of my favourite photos on there like I can do with my Lumia, I can't put a big tile on there with a photo of my wife, or a Fitbit tile showing me how far I've walked and the number of steps, I can't put a big tile on there showing the latest posts in my blog reader app, such a new EOSHD post, or even a Flickr tile showing new photos my contacts have posted, and so on. You can't do any of this with iOS. All you get are boring icons, which if you're lucky, might have a number on them.

Even Android users can do a lot more with widgets and whatever else they have.

  7. What's ironic here is that Apple are now the company with the monopoly in many markets who are no longer innovating. Look at what Microsoft are doing. They have one streamlined OS that works across all devices from phones, tablets to desktops. They've just released new phones (Lumia 950 & 950 XL) that you can connect a mouse, keyboard & monitor to, and use as a full functioning computer with desktop apps. Their Surface range also continues to get better and better. Of course, they also have that Hololens technology that looks quite impressive from the demos I've seen.

And what do Apple release? A big iPad with what is essentially the same OS as what the original iphone was running back when it was first released.

  8. I have the RX100 IV and really like it.My only real issue is the short battery life,I brought 3 extra batteries just to feel comfortable. The low light performance is good, the noise is more of a fine grain. I just did a test and from what I can see the clear image zoom doesn't seem to degrade quality much. I haven't attempt to shoot anything of real length, meaning 4 to 5 minute takes so I haven't suffered any overheating. The 1080p is so good I barely shoot 4k but it's nice to know it's there if I need brief clips.

True, the battery's not so good. I just got the camera a couple of days ago and bought an extra two of the Sony branded batteries. Are yours Sony, or third party? I've seen some really cheap versions, so might try a couple of those too as an additional back up. But in the past with Sony cameras I've had, third party batteries have never worked and bring up an error message.

So far I've mostly just been shooting 250fps clips. I knew sooner or later those high frame rate modes the FS700 had a few years back would make it into something affordable.

I have no idea why reviewers I've seen complain about the menus? They work fine and are easy to navigate. I have the down wheel button for aperture and shutter speed, the left button for white balance, right button for ISO, the C button to toggle between auto and manual focus, and with the control ring only used for focus. Everything else I could ever need I have in the function menu.

I've also set up the three memory recall presets. The first set to 4K 25P with a 1/50 shutter, the second 1080 50P with active IS and a 1/100 shutter, and the third 1080 100P with a 1/200 shutter.

Just waiting for the Lensmate filter adapter to arrive so I can throw a variable ND on there.

By the way, I remember that some A7R II users were able reduce overheating issues by opening up the LCD st the back. I'm hoping that will help here too.

  9. Nice review. I've just sold my A6000 to get one of these. It will be nice to have a camera that I can carry in my main pocket again, instead of a phone. I've really missed the limitations of a compact camera too. Although with 4k, high frame rates, S-LOG 2, good macro capability, active image stabilisation and not having to worry about carrying around additional lenses, it actually has more going for it that the A6000.

A quick question though, does anybody know if the Clear Image Zoom works when shooting 1080P video without any quality loss? As far as I know, it just crops in on the sensor, right?

  10. They're still too expensive IMO. Here in Australia, the 128gb model is $1529. That would buy a Sony RX100 mkIV with a 128gb card, extra batteries, accessories, and you'd still have money left over. No matter how good the 4K is on the iphone, it's still going to fall apart in low light with the small sensor. Even most Youtubers avoid them in favour of dedicated cameras.

Or for that same price, you could buy a 256gb i5 Surface Pro 3, which has a decent enough camera that you could shoot photos with and edit directly in Photoshop CC, rather than using a phone app. 1080P video too and the ability to use proper video editing, compositing and colour grading programs. That's if you want to be one of those guys who shoot with a tablet.

I'm looking forward to the next Lumia though. With Windows 10 and universal apps, you'll be able to hook it up to a keyboard, monitor & mouse, and use it as an actual PC. Should be a lot cheaper than any iPhone. The current models already shoot good 4K, which I used for a music video once. Only issue is the auto exposure.

By the way, the vertical shooting on iPhones is for those apps like Snapchat and Beme. A complete waste of Apple's imaging technology.

  11. I have a suspicion as to why DSLR cameras from Canon and Nikon are still as popular as they are. Basically Youtubers who film themselves and need a mic input.

Sony's A5100 has a selfie screen, but no mic input. So it's no good to them. None of the models above it, including the A7 series have the selfie screen, so they're no good to these people either. Then the Panasonic cameras they will dismiss for only being Micro 4/3 .

So all they're left with are Canon and Nikon, whose cheaper cameras have both selfie screens and mic inputs. And being Youtubers, they're going to promote these cameras to their audience too.

  12. Sony should have something new available soon. Hopefully an affordable 4k camera that can do 50P/60P like the FS7. Panasonic actually have a more affordable 4K 50P/60P video camera, but with a small sensor. It would probably do a better job than this thing though.

  13. Interesting test. I couldn't really notice any difference between the different cameras. But that said, I wasn't really looking. It was more a case of 'This shot looks good', 'this one could have been framed better', 'this one looks nice', 'editing here could have been tighter', and so on. The shot of the vocalist for example. Personally, I would have found a way to frame him on his own, instead of including the keyboard player at the back. So in my eyes, the fact that it was shot on the A7S is irrelevant.

If anything, I guess it proves that the choice of camera is not really important. As long as whatever camera being used has decent enough image quality and can handle whatever type of lighting is being used, whether it's the sun, tungsten, street lights or whatever, you should be good to go. Of course having a large sensor and decent lenses will help too if you're after a shallow DOF. But still, at the end of the day the content will always be most important.

Oh, and a tip for Youtube. You may not spot it, but Youtube delays the audio by at least one frame. When I make a music video for an artist, I always do two versions, one for Youtube with the audio moved forward one frame, and another for Vimeo or normal playback with no adjustments. You can check that Youtube sync error by downloading a video you've uploaded there and comparing it with the original by looking at the audio waveform in relation to the frames on a timeline.
    to go.

  14. I think it's a good thing, even if it means less sales for large sensor cameras. It's creating more of a separation between the mum & dad photographers (who were jumping on the DSLR bandwagon for a while there, but are now just using phones), and those of us who take things more seriously.

Essentially I believe it will mean more work for the professionals. In the past 10 years or so, I've seen people rely on a cousin or friend with DSLR to cover an important event, because they don't have to worry about paying them. But if that cousin or friend has made the switch to a smartphone for convenience, as I know a lot who have, then the only option will be to hire someone with a proper camera who knows what they're doing. Especially if the job involves video.

I'm sure all the big camera companies will adapt in their own way, usually through trial and error.

But at the same time, I've been seeing quite a few Instagrammers in recent times getting themselves mirrorless cameras. They become so passionate about their mobile photography, that they suddenly realise how crappy their iPhone, android or Lumia cameras really are.

  15. Only 15fps at 4K?  That's a relief to hear! I was actually really interested in this CM1, but the thought of Android running on a tiny 4.7" screen had me worried. Especially as I'm so used to running Windows Phone 8.1 (which is pretty flawless) on a big 6" screen Lumia.

But now it seems I have a good reason not to buy the CM1. So I'm happy about that :)

  16. A bit of an ugly camera (just like their phones), but if they can get the tech part of it running smoothly, it could be a good option. I'm curious though what the dynamic range would be like? And if Samsung have cine profiles or even simple tweaks like being sble to turn down the contrast etc?

I'm also wondering how long it will take NLEs like Vegas to support h.265, and if other camera companies will start using it too.

  17. Yeah, this appears to be a good camera and I'm sure it could be used really creatively. Especially with that zoom, and being able to shoot in 4k. I'll check what they sell for here in Australia, as I've got a friend who was looking at buying an AX100.

And Andrew, it sounds like you have a few too many cameras! It might be time to let some of them go. Having too many options can sometimes limit your creativity. It can also mean never really getting to know a camera or other bit of gear inside out. Especially if you just use it once, shoot a video with it, review it and then move onto the next camera.
