There is a huge difference between "Event Photographers", "Wedding Videographers", 'Landscape Photographers", "Time Lapse" photographers or guys who teach 'Tutorials" even "Photographers" who play around with naked girls on their 5D's to some shite music..or shoot weddings that 95% of them will end in divorce within 5 years..lol...and a real 'filmmaker'.

Vimeo should have a seperate section on their site for weddings and the other BS...ad nauseum.

Just because a lot of people can buy a $3,500 still cam with video function (or even an Epic/Alexa for that matter) does not make them a Filmmaker.

Filmmakers shoot movies. (narrative - even with a 5D). I'll cut you some slack on a great documentarian like Werner Herzog or Ken Burns..but that's it.

Canon Mark 5d3 is less than a year old.  Came out around $3600.  Being sold for as low as $2600.  These are different times.  The 5D2 initially didn't have competition.  The 5D3 does.

I agree with Andrew. $6000 seems excessive.

Let's say the BMC sells 20000 cameras. It is a niche market that Canon had but is losing market share. If Canon gave better specs, do you think people would have been embracing BMC as they have?

The Big Boys will not rock the market too much as it takes money off the table. Gopro has a 4K camera (although not 24 frames/s) however it is 2K (24 frames/s) for $400. They are making money at that price. It includes a lens. Surely, a giant company can offer those specs with an interchangeable lens for a reasonable price? Surely Gopro had to spend on research and development.

Canon came out with the 5D2 years ago. Their upgrade path years later was the 5D3. People wanted better color space such as 8 bit/10 bit, 422. Nope. How about true 1080p without the shrinking then upscaling? Nope. Look how detailed the GH2 video is. Surely Canon could have offered. Sony is coming out with alot of cameras, but are the specs truly earth shattering? They seem to be towing the same line with respect to specs. If you are willing to pay $20K then the specs are excellent.

Why can a new camera as the BMC offer a $3K camera with such good specs? Why can't an established entity do the same? An establish company has most of their R and D paid. Initially pricing only came down due to RED. In the past, you'd be paying a quarter of a million for top specs. RED upset the food chain.

You'd think after the dslr revolution, Canon would have wanted to secure the market. They could have offered a better spec DSLR for $4500, and people would have bought - such as 422, 8 or 10 bit, better compression, real 1080p, etc. Instead they off not so much. They did develop the C300 but for $16000. I think mass appeal can be more profitable in the long term than making these niche markets. Sell more batteries, lenses, etc. You don't want the competition to gain market share either. Once you lose a customer then it could be years to gain them back. Or you may never get them back.
Just ranting, and don't want to debate.

EPIC just did.

We have learned how to make EPICs in quantity, lowered our assembly costs, found better suppliers and paid off our NRE.

That means we can continue to charge the same for an EPIC (and now make an obscene amount of profit) or lower the price.

Those of you that paid the initial price hopefully got your money's worth. It was the best price we could offer at the time. You rented your cameras. You used them to generate income by shooting projects.

The industry struggles how to handle it when technology gets better for cheaper. We just tell the truth.

We are ready to lower prices on EPIC.

So if you bought an EPIC did you lose? Only if you did not put your EPIC to work. These are professional tools. They need to work. That is your responsibility.

Is your EPIC still relevant? Absolutely. Can it be upgraded to Dragon? Yes. Is it frustrating that you paid $X and it will soon be sold for some percentage less than X? Yes. But this is the nature of electronics. It has been. It is. And it always will be.

I paid over $2400 (in 1984 dollars) for an original 1984 Macintosh. That is over $4000 worth of today's money. It had no hard drive. It was 128K of RAM. 3.5" floppys. All I could do with a 1984 Macintosh was MacPaint and MacWrite.

Today... for $4000 you can buy an iMac with a ton of RAM and a bazillion times more in storage that is 10,000 times faster and more capable with a billion times more applications. If you thought the world was changing rapidly then... hold on to your hat. We now live in the world of exponential.

So. We could easily pretend and invent a new model to justify a lower price with higher performance. You are too smart for that. So are we. Instead... we will just lower the price of EPIC.

EPIC continues to be modular. Dragon will be an upgrade. Meizler is a module. All is good in the world if you accept the fact that everything gets better, cheaper, faster and for less money over time.

If you bought an EPIC in the past 30 days... we will offer a credit towards accessories. That amount will be posted along with the new EPIC pricing. Nov. 1st is when it happens.

Here is to transparency and honesty. Here is to the future. This is all an experiment. Let's see how it goes...

Andrew, Right on!

When a company is an industry leader, it should not only keep their current clients happy, but try to steer competitor clients onto their boat. The 5D3 could have been way more. 4 to 5 years for a few extras? Look at the $400 Hero 2.7K camera! Do they think the consumer is that stupid? I like Canon products but today's market is different. Change with the times. Don't wait for the times to change you. Cheers.

Wow. F54K. Love the form factor. Sony could have a huge winner here. If this is priced around the $10K to $15K range then they got the market. If they price too high then they compute with the other big boys and dust collects. Disrupt and secure the market especially in these economic times.

Only rough numbers below:

1DC price - low $10000 (Australian website) and BH $12999.
C300 - $15000
C500 - $30,000 subtract rebate
Scarlet - $12000 to $15000
Epic $40000

Does Sony want to kick ass? Pricing will be the key.

saveer, I am thinking the same thing as you. By the way, I think the GoPro video footage is amazing. The price is amazing too. DSLR camera manufacturers could give us way more. They'll try to get as much from the consumer before offering more. Throw a few crumbs at a time so they can profit more. Part of the game. What GoPro shows is competition will be fierce in the near future.

A poster named Matt from Nofilmschool says,

The Panasonic AVC-Ultra family defines an additional three new encoding parameters within the MPEG-4 Part 10 standard, utilizing up to the 4:4:4 Intra Predictive Profile, as well as an additional low bitrate proxy recording mode.

The most efficient new parameter within AVC-Ultra is by Panasonic called, AVC-LongG. AVC-LongG enables compression of video resolutions up to 1920 × 1080 @ 23.97, 25 and 29.97p, with 10 bits of pixel depth at 4:2:2 color sampling, at data rates as low as 25 Mbit / sec.

More over, the AVC-Intra Class 50/100 is now extended to Class 200 and Class 4:4:4. The Class 200 mode extends the bitrate to 226 Mbit / sec for 1080/23,97p, while the Class 4:4:4 extends the possible resolution from 720p to 4K with pixel depths at 10 and 12 bits.

The bitrate settings for Class 4:4:4 varies between 200 and 440 Mbit / sec depending on the resolution, frame rate and bit depth. Both the Class 200 and the Class 4:4:4 are Intra-only coding modes

The AVC-Proxy mode enables extremely fast ENG content delivery and offline edits of 720p and 1080p video at bitrates varying between 800 Kbit to 3,5 Mbit / sec at 8 bits of pixel depth.

if they really want to pack 4:2:2 10bit 1080/60p in gh3 with 80mbit/s they can do it, let´s wait and see

Sony Introduces Handheld PMW-200 4:2:2 XDCAM

Successor to PMW-EX1R Offers 50 Mbps MXF Recording, Genlock, Timecode
By Bryant Frazer / Jul 25, 2012

Sony has improved on the PMW-EX1R XDCAM with the new PMW-200, which offers MPEG HD422 recording to SxS cards at 50 Mbps. Sony is positioning it in part as an ideal B-camera counterpart to the $25,000 PMW-500. The PMW-200 is expected to ship in September for a list price of $7790.
The camera captures imagery via three 1/2-inch Exmor CMOS chips. The increased quality of 4:2:2 recording is a nice upgrade, but the workflow advantage is the PMW-200's support for the MXF container and the UDF file system. UDF is the basis for recording to the Blu-ray optical-disc recording media favored by reality-TV producers (due to the high shooting ratios and low cost of media), and it's also utilized by the PMW-500.
That means the PMW-200 allows facilities to use the same UDF/MXF recording mode across both memory cards and optical media, using established XDCAM workflow. (However, the PMW-100 does not generate a separate proxy when shooting in MXF mode.) The PMW-200 also supports 35 Mbps and 25 Mbps MP4 and DVCAM recording tp SxS in the FAT format, making it fully backward compatible with existing XDCAM EX workflows.
The PMW-200 is far from a replacement for the PMW-500, which is a shoulder-mount camera boasting 2/3-inch CCDs. Still, Sony officials say it's a nice improvement over the EX1R, boosting the signal-to-noise ratio from 54 to 56 dB and sensitivity from F10 at 2000 lux to F11. Compare that to published figures of 59 dB and F11 (60i) and F12 (50i) for the PMW-500.
"They're pretty well matched," Sony Electronics Senior Product Manager Christopher Tsai tells StudioDaily. "The EX1R has always been noted for really good sensitivity with low noise, and we already have a lot of people who are using the EX1R like a B camera with the PMW-500 — or even the PDW-F800."
Another upgrade from the EX1R is the ability to record up to four channels of 24-bit LPCM audio in the MXF container, the same as the PMW-500. The viewfinder is the same, but the 3.5-inch LCD panel has been upres'd from 640×480 to 852×480, and a new Wi-Fi option for remote operation via mobile app should be available via a firmware upgrade that''s scheduled to go online in December.
The 14x zoom fixed Fujinon lens has been ported over unchanged from the EX1R, meaning existing lens accessories like the VCL-EX0877 .8x wide converter will work with the new camera. The EX1R's slow-and-quick speed and slow-shutter options are also intact, along with the 15-second cache recording feature, and the battery system and accessories are the same.
In the interest of full disclosure, we asked Tsai which significant features from the EXR1 are missing. He said there are three.

The Shot Transition push-button feature for moving automatically between two sets of presets (focus, zoom, etc) has been discarded

Component video out is gone. Instead, the camera has a BNC terminal for composite video out that doubles as a genlock in. Another BNC enables timecode in and out. (The EXR1 had neither genlock in nor timecode in/out.) HDMI and SDI output are still there, of course. "We took off one output connector and gave you two additional," Tsai says.

The PMW did not inherit the rotating handgrip from the EXR1.
No doubt one or more of these will be dealbreakers for some users. For more details, take a look at the official press release or click on over to the official XDCAM website.
