sandro reacted to Cosimo in Some sad personal news, and a note on the future
Ciao Andrew, this news really touched me a lot, believe me it really makes me angry to hear about cancer at a young age. I'm very sorry. I'm sure you won't like what I'm about to say, feel free to insult me or kick me out of this forum . What i am about to say doesn't fit your beliefs and many others here. Many people are dying during this time for cancer and heart diseases. Many of these die because of the Covid vaccine, all this obviously is hidden by the politics ,media and especially by  doctors. I understand that this is unacceptable and that not everyone has the means to discern this type of information. Did your sister get the vaccines? If I were you I would dig it more on this topic.

I suspected that but I never actually checked if the color space was wider in a nle software. Thanks!

The regular metadata tags containing the colorspace indeed indicates it is a rec709 recording. I suspect vlog isn't allowed or known as a color space for that tag. It ensures all players will at least play it back. Mediainfo also shows a blurb of vendor specific data containing the text vlog and vgamut and some additional readable text. It seems all sorts of metadata is put into the video stream, but it's format is specific for Panasonic and most software is unfamiliar with it's format. However. If you set up your nle correctly and explicitly specify vlog-vgamut as the input format, all colors fall into place. In particular when using an aces workflow.

Sorry if my question wasn't clear.
Considering the price of the L-mount native lenses I was wondering if I could get away with cheaper Canon/Nikon mount lenses + adapter to keep the costs down.

Apparently this should be possible but with many limitations. Even the Sigma adapter has a limited selection of lenses compatible.

I have a Tokina 11-16 ATX PRO Nikon F mount, I can forget about using AF-S with the S5?

    No.
There is an increased stabilisation bonus using native lenses with OIS taking stab from I think 5 stops (?) to 6.5, but there are only a couple of zooms with this feature.
Otherwise IBIS works with any/all lenses regardless of what they are, who they were made by or how old they are.

My guess would be that S5 performs even a bit better. Reasons for that would be that S5 has V-Log and HDR recording possibilities, both being 10-bit options. Add to it a Dual Native ISO and low light capabilities should be fine on S5.

So later this year, it's time to replace my NX1 with… what??
I do lots of industrial/business/medical stuff, talking heads in the office, then manufacturing or process in the big facility - a music vid every month or two. One-man-band. It's a great gig, I'm happy as a clam.
The big NX1 game changer for me has been video AF on a gimbal. Never thought video AF would mean jack to me, but the NX1 with the cheap little OIS kit lens is the biggest game changer I've encountered in a decade of doing this. I can literally run around a factory and get killer shots. Clients think it's drone video. My killer-shot-count has gone through the roof - hardly ever bring the Kessler crane any more. I can try a dozen angles and moves in the time it takes to set up one crane shot. I can play that rig like a guitar.
On a tripod I use Nikkors, the footage is beautiful. But the NX1 has its cons: no Prores, no RAW, blown highs, noise at higher ISOs. 4K@ 60p would be nice. I have tons of lights for interviews/planned shots, but too much of my work is in dimmer environments.
The Nikon Z6 sounds like a no-brainer - but it sounds like I'd take a big step down in the AF I rely on for motion shots.
So what would you do? What's the best in mirrorless AF these days? (I love the NX1 EVF for shoulder rigs and no fiddling with an external - I'll never go back to a DSLR). I'm really happy with APS-C, full frame would be fine for me though, not thrilled with smaller sensors, but for my AF shots I'm usually pretty wide, so I could go smaller sensor with a native lens.
What's out now, what's coming down the pipeline? Thanks for any ideas.

No offense but this is very basic Amazon shopping "skill".  Avoid any other vendor other than ships and sold by Amazon.
(Unless it's a company selling it's own goods on Amazon.)

What is the point of this post? You got burned because you bought from a crappy source and now blaming Amazon... Same thing can happen at eBay or Alieexpress or wherever you are deal hunting...

You might want to boycott Amazon for other reasons (warehouse working conditions) but this is just silly.

So true. That’s a $25k camera. We’re going to get more of the same 8-bit 4:2:0 stuff.

This is a great tool to use. In jpeg mode it gets you close to what video will look like.

Isn't 4k60p cropped also?  I was just saying that I was expecting in 2018 to drop these freaking crop factors for >1.5k cameras that clearly shows they just can't handle the data.
So did you check the ISO?

I wouldn't hold my breath. Canon slapped a 8-bit 4:2:0 codec in their $7,500 C200.. no way they're going 10-bit on their entry MILC. That's not the Canon way.

"I would say – be prepared for disappointment – and a heavy crop."
To be disappointed you need to have expectations....  I would add to the list:
    - 4k that look like 2.7k at best
    - Weird codec (MJPEG)
    - Crappy bitrate
    - Moire and aliasing fest
    - No AF for some video modes
    - Crop
    - No high frame rate
    - Zero assist features such as peaking and zebra
    - No IBIS
    - No LOG

Best case scenario they don't fuck it up too hard and it might become a decent camera for Vlogers and gimbal work. By the time Canon implements acceptable 4k30 with little crop, everybody else will be doing HDR,  10 bits, 4k120 and 8k30...

The "sinister" thing in this which is probably too strong of a word, was they officially towed the line that "No, we're not doing any such thing". (Meaning closing shop) And then turn around and do the exact opposite without an official North American statement, which was an obvious attempt to sell off remaining supplies. It's just your average large corporation dick move.
Personally, I eventually got to the point where I stopped caring (after the petition didn't get the level of response I was hoping for from Samsung) and just enjoy the camera for what it is. And what it is is a dead camera/system that I enjoy using and I don't ask more out of it. One day it will be replaced with something else I also enjoy.

I’m sure about it, that is precisely what they did. They, Samsung, kept vehemently dening the shut down of the camera line, in fact, making it a circus of rumors that led those into a dead end camera. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great camera, but it’s still a dead end, especially if you bought into their eco system of lenses. Basically, they never admitted to it, so that they could dump their existing stock on hand. If that isn’t a burn, then it’s clearly, at the very least, deception.

You really seem to forget the horrible ISO performance, really horrible, looking like a handycam above 1600.
Lenses for low light? Sure get the premium S lenses, used, and you can just trash them after you decide to switch system.
Need more low light? Sure buy the adapter for the price of a low end panasonic mirrorless, again that you will trash since it can't be used in the future.
It was an amazing product no doubt,  anyway let's not forget about its flaws for low light when others were way better already. And fixing those issue by giving away for money for a DEAD system is not something I would advise or feel good about it, honestly.
However if the NX2 was real........
