Francisco Rios reacted to tony wilson in Kowa same as 16H / 8Z in a mint condition
one of the links above that was given as proof of cheap perfect optics was a kowa with optical damage.
just because someone says a rainbow like bloom across the optic has zero effect does not mean it is true.
repairing seperation is either possible or not but it will be expensive.

an optically  mint condition kowa should be worth more than an slr magic as the kowa is superior to 1.33 or the new 2x.

the kowa is a great optic one in mint condition fully tested should be valued higher than some vague ad giving false information about condition.
the massive amount of bell howells floating around dual focus issues has damaged the market for kowa.

optically panasonic, slr magic, optex and century are all inferior optically and analogue esthetically.

400-500 euros for a guaranteed optic hollywood quality seems ok to me.

Francisco Rios reacted to Andrew Reid in Welcome to the newly re-launched EOSHD
EOSHD has a fresh look to both the blog and forum. Both are now responsive layouts with the latest source code and web technology. Now EOSHD comes to you faster and easier to use than ever before.

More features will be added in the coming days and one I am especially looking forward to rolling out is EOSHD Soundtrack Compositions. This is the start of a long project but right out of the blocks I am impressed with the quality of music we'll be providing to filmmakers through it.

So this is a new era for EOSHD and a new site design, please do let me know what you think of it on the forum and I will answer any questions you have about the new layout there.

If you spot anything you think isn't working properly or could do with tidying up, do let me know!

What's next this week on EOSHD

    1. The final conclusion and part 2 of my Sony A7S review is almost done so look out for it.

    2. I have been shooting with the Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART lens and it is very interesting to compare the performance to my Cooke S4i Mini 50mm T2.8 PL mount cinema lens. One is a $999 photographic lens and one a $8000 cinema lens. The mighty Sigma will also go up against the lenses I love because of character first and foremost rather than outright performance - the Canon 50mm F1.2L and Leica-R Summilux 50mm F1.4. What's the best high end 50 you can get? Find out soon on EOSHD.

    3. Photokina 2014 preview, ahead of the show the following week. Every year the largest consumer photographic show comes round and I'll be in Cologne, Germany from the 16th to cover the show first hand and see what's new. There's plenty of video related action at Photokina (the last one saw the debut of the GH3). Canon have all their Cinema EOS offerings at the show. Will there be anything new from them? Sony will certainly have their new F series cinema camera at the show and I can't way to try it out. I'll be interviewing Sony's Bill Drummond at the show about their Alpha stills cameras, such as the A7S. Lot's to look forward to and do come along and say hello!

    4. SLR Magic 10mm T2.1 review. What's the latest wide angle for Micro Four Thirds like? My full review is in the works and will be ready soon.

    5. Metabones Speed Booster ULTRA and Micro Four Thirds EF Speed Booster reviews.

    And finally...

Thanks for reading EOSHD and for just being interested! By being passionate and interested in what we love to do over the long term, we improve the quality of what we do.

It is a very interesting time to be a filmmaker in terms of the cameras and if there's any direction you'd prefer to see EOSHD move towards in the coming months do have your say on the forum.

Francisco Rios reacted to Brian Caldwell in Official announcement - Metabones Speed Booster ULTRA
The fundamental problem is that the Speed Booster shrinks the vertex length of the lens (the distance from the front glass surface to the image plane).  So even if you could mount the SB optics inside the C300 EF mount you wouldn't be able to focus to infinity because the EF mount protrudes too far.  Even if you could design a focal reducer that maintained the vertex distance you would then have the problem of mounting the optics since an adapter approach wouldn't work (zero flange-to-flange distance).

Francisco Rios reacted to Andrew Reid in Official announcement - Metabones Speed Booster ULTRA
The Speed Booster ULTRA has new optics and is available for E-Mount and Fuji X-mount (APS-C or Super 35mm sensors). The adapter has the latest evolution of optics from Caldwell Photographic in the US.

The new optics bring an increase in performance, with sharper corners and better contrast.

The new design is an extremely advanced 5-element / 4 group tantalum based optical formula. The old version of Speed Booster will be phased out.

Oh I nearly forgot to tell you that the beautiful colour tone seems to be a result of using gold filter ND optical glass.

    I got mine here

The 62mm size is a perfect match to the Rectilux 3FF and the gold filtration has in my opinion a pleasing effect on the imagery, even though the listing says there is no effect on colour balance - there is - but it is very nice.

    Ok John, I saw it.
Looks amazing. You know I have also the moller 32x.
I wanted to check sharpness with your single focus system. My reference is my own footage in 3.55 aspect ratio.
    Your rectilux perform fantastic.
If I were in England I would like to try it for sure....
I know you are busy...but I would like to see some more footage in a tripod with rack focus , maybe in some more "cinematic condition" and also would like to see bokeh...I'll be patience :-)
I know your target is more standard 2.41 aspect ,but I'm sure there be more people also who will be fascinating with 3.55 single focus system.

    Hi,

Again innovation are coming in phones, first :/.

So Instagram released a new iPhone app, Hyperlapse.
It stabilises video using the accelerometer of the iPhone.
It works AMAZINGLY well (better than the EM-1 stab !!!)

    Just tried it myself...

Of course the purpose is then to accelerate the video to make it an hyperlapse as demonstrated here:
    https://itunes.apple.com/app/id740146917

But you can choose 1x speed and it just makes the video 100% stabilized even when running, with no warping effect ! incredible.

It takes 1-2 second on the iPhone to "stabilise" a 1min video !!
Just imagine a GH4 with an accelerometer inside, and with the hit of a button you get your clip stabilized like this !!!

Definitely the future, if camera makers think 2 seconds....
Byebye steadicams, byebye Warp Stabiliser, byebye all the bullshit.

Remaining time is top on everyone's wish list, very probably it will soon come for the smaller models.

As histogram (a nice one!) and audio levels appear through the touchscreen-function 'Head-Up', they might be still missing for the Pocket, but let's be thankful that there are things to come (instead of the theory that BMD abandoned the BMPCC after clearing their storage rooms with the summer special).

    Y value at 50%

Also, remember that you can now set a manual aspect ratio for the project - this means that you are no longer stuck with 1920x1080 & the black bars, but can now choose to stretch & not only squeeze the footage.
This means you can get 3840x1080 & not just 1920x540 - it should mean that you could also choose other aspect ratios such as 2.93:1 or 2.66:1 & automatically crop the footage by adjusting the x or y axis in the Transform tab.

Francisco Rios reacted to Andrew Reid in Blackmagic to release new 'unified' firmware update for all cameras
Blackmagic firmware Version 1.8 is set to be released for all cameras simultaneously. The good news is that the work to create a unified firmware seems to be done. This was the work which for so long was getting in the way of Blackmagic adding new features to their cameras (like histograms). From now on we could be seeing some more regular and more exciting updates.

Straight off the bat with 1.8 there's a lot of new additions like 4K raw on the Production Camera and a new user interface for all cameras.

I am upgrading some members to moderator status. If they choose to exercise their newfound abilities, this upgrade comes with the ability to delete and lock posts as well as the all powerful, all conquering ability to ban members who misbehave!

Thanks for their positive contributions to life here at EOSHD I am promoting RichG101, mtheory and jonpais to moderator status for the main forum and all sub-sections.

It carries no extra work or obligations - exercising their privileges will be entirely at the discretion of the moderator. I'll continue as the main admin. But I think having extra eyes and ears plus a few more trusted people with the ability to clean up posts and ban members will help me a lot.

Also since they expressed an interest, JohnBarlow will moderate the Anamorphic forum and Andy Lee will get his own sticky thread on lenses and lighting which may build into it's own forum section if it is successful.

I'll create the moderator privileges later in the week. Any objections or any opt outs please have your say on this thread!

Francisco Rios reacted to Andrew Reid in Blackmagic URSA - a $6k 4K professional cinema camera with interchangeable sensor
The integration of all the rig stuff you might use on a BMCC is a good idea on the Ursa but I think you are swapping one practicality mess for another.

The weight makes it impractical for a ton of stuff. How many times have we heard people sing praises of lighter cameras like the 5D or EPIC because it makes rigging lighter. Lots of stuff is shot form 3 axis gimbals and MoVi is pretty groundbreaking. I'd rather have that freedom of shot getting, than having to lug around 10kg on sticks like some nostalgic throwback to the film days.

Drones are great too... GH4 can go on one. This can't.

With the GH4 you can strip it down or build it up and buy 3, keeping each on set in a different configuration depending on the shot you need to get. Rather have 3 of those bespoke rigs than one big heavy Ursa that is only suitable for half the shots I need to do.

So much great work has been shot on location with the smaller cameras, without a large crew. I have tried shooting in a small crew with a heavy camera - the Kineraw S35 was very heavy - I hated every second of it. I was seeing shots and angles all over the place and the camera just wasn't nimble enough to go there quick enough.

Fact is big heavy cameras slow you down.

I am all for getting rid of the stupid spidery arms and bits hanging of DSLRs and BMCCs.

But this is wrong way to go about it.

All this time, effort and money - some of it ours - spent on two new cameras rather than updating the BMCC form factor to something much more usable. Like a Mini Ursa. It's a tragedy.

Just give us a BMCC in a small but integrated and capable cinema camera, that's all I want!
