  1. On one feature I shot, we used a "Snow White"-themed rolling case, very similar to this: We put in a little padding in it, and it was very convenient in carrying the fully built camera. When we wanted the camera on set, we would call, "'Princess Case' on set!" When shooting in crowds, we could walk a fair distance away from the case, and nobody bothered it.

  4. Well Canon 1D C was nice in 8bit C-LOG. But that was 422 and very high bitrate. I'd be happy if the EOS R6 has an image to rival that. It's not all about the specs on paper when it comes to Canon.

    Been a few years since I've used Tascam DR60D so I can't remember exactly how long the AA batteries lasted me then, but all you needed to do is slap a USB powerbank on it and your worries are over. Although, it took a firmware update first: http://ironfilm.co.nz/firmware-update-for-tascam-dr-60d-mk1-fixes-recording-interruptions-when-running-on-external-usb-power-packs/ However, you don't need to do even that for the newer DR60Dmk2, works out of the box. For an ultra low budget talking head IVs, get this basic sound package: Oktava MK012 HC Deity S Mic 2 kit (get the kit, so you get the shockmount and wind protection for cheap too) C Stand & sandbag Boom Buddy Boom Pole (even an Alu pole would be fine, as you're never holding it. Although I'd usually always recommend a carbonfibre pole) Secondhand UWP-D11 / G3 Tascam DR60Dmk2 (but absolutely do stretch to a F4/F6/MixPre3 if you can) For when you're shooting handheld, keep it basic and just have a V-Mic D3 Pro on the camera.

  6. I've got one of these plus the sl150 The 150 is a crap ton brighter, and is almost a perfect colour match (but not totally identical) The word is to avoid the sl200, it's very green. I also bought a cheap fresnel https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Bowens_Fresnel/Ntt/Bowens+Fresnel/N/0 This coupled with silver boards gives a nice backlight keylight. I made my own silverboards from insulation foam. Personally I think these lights are way more versatile than led panels.

  7. It's not as heavy as it looks. Besides, between the top handle and the side grip it's infinitely more comfortable to handhold than a DSLR/mirrorless imo. I'm tied up this weekend, but Monday or Tuesday I'll try and get some Protest HQ test clips up for y'all to mess with.

  8. Taking lens was Navitron 25mm f0.95, mostly around f2-2.8. I’ll preach 1.75X on 16mm until the day I die. The camera-to-dollar ratio on regular-16 versus super-16 bodies is kinda ridiculous. I just bought the absolute top quality 1.75X adapter (Kowa Inflight), and I have a crystal sync sound camera with coaxial mags and a color video tap... still all for cheaper than a S16 SR-2. That’s the REAL beauty of film. There’s no sensor difference between bodies, it’s all in the film stock. Would I absolutely love a 416, an SR-3 Highspeed, or even an XTR Prod? Absolutely and maybe some day. But if I don’t tell you what camera I shot on, can you even tell? Not really. There’s a lot of great glass out there too for cheaper simply because it’s not a PL mount body. I can get some classic Cooke and Angenieux glass in Eclair’s CA-1 mount or even in Arri STD. And C-Mount? Perfect for 16mm and very adaptable.

  12. Looks really nice. Cool to see more people on this forum shooting 16mm. Have you tried Kodak Film Lab Atlanta? Their rates and turn around time are the best I have found. Exactly. I shot this on the Bolex Rex 4. If you get high quality scans and treat it right in post, it'll be close to what those bigger cameras can do. Bolex is kind of like the DSLR of the film cameras. I really love the internal NDs and simplicity of the camera. I think for solo type shooting, it is a really good option.

  14. Just to give a heads up, IMO the T5 drives are EOL. Stocks are drying up (the 1TB anyway). I just posted the following over at the Blackmagicdesign forum, I have some interesting observations re T5 speed - I did not find any mention anywhere one should update the firmware of the T5 drives, even recent ones. I just got a bunch of new T5s before they run out of stock, and after using a 1TB T5 for 6 months that actually does not record as high bitrates as my cheap 256GB SD card I tried updating to the latest firmware on the T5. It is much quicker now, also when connected to PC and writing to it. Previously I only got 300 MB/s peak, which drops down to 130 MB/s after say 40 GB. At this very moment my P4K is recording BRAW at max resolution a 60 fps at 3:1 compression ratio (=270 MB/s). I'm 4 minutes far, no dropped frames, still recording ! (that's 64 GB, after which the write speed remains constant for sure) I would recomend downloading the Samsung T5 utility and updating the firmware. This does not seem documented at all. This means my 500 GB T5 is not on the supported media list for braw 3:1 60 fps, but after the firmware update, it works ! Does anyone here have similar experiences ? This would mean any T5 with correct firmware would be able to do 6K full res at 24p on a bmpcc 6K !

  16. Never thought to share this but I've been using these with cheap clamp lights to add color to venues and backgrounds for a while. They're under $4US, you can't really beat that.

    I use my dr60d mk2 with a powerbank tacked with scratch tape on its back. It works for hours running an ntg-2 (And you can easily replace the powerbank. )

  18. I use the Senal SMH-1000 for monitoring and mixing. You can find them on sale for under $50 from time to time. I've been happy with them.

    From my personal perspective, no. Go for the MixPre / F Series, the leap up from everything underneath it is so huge! Imagine if we live in a world where you could buy a Canon C300mk3 for only a five hundred extra bucks more than what the latest 5D cost, would anybody recommend a 5D for specifically filmmaking any longer? Nope! (well, except for some niche exceptions) That's what it is like in the audio world for filmmaking once the Zoom F Series was released! (and is why Sound Devices had to respond with their MixPre range) In a way the Zoom F8 was the "HDSLR Revolution" for us aspiring PSMs, just like the D90/5Dmk2/T2i/GH1 was. No point fussing around compromising with a "cheap" EX1 and a Letus35 adapter when you can get a 5Dmk2/GH1/etc cheap instead! But if I was absolutely 110% restricted to a sub $200 budget, then I'd get a Tascam DR60Dmk2. No, video recorders are not made with audio recording in mind. (with the exception of the Video Devices range of video recorders, but that's because they're a brand created by Sound Devices!!)

  20. Yes most F3 specific accessories have ceased being made. And I wouldn't be surprised if back in the day the new price for the 3ality technica body armour was more than what a used F3 costs now! Yes, that's a common way to transport a cinema camera during a shoot, or on the AC's lap. Otherwise inside a really large camera bag. You might remove the monitor/EVF to make it easier to transport the camera, but otherwise leave it all rigged up as is.

    Mr Speakers (Now called Dan Clark Audio) Ether C. Never had such a good reference pair. Really transparent on the source. Feed it a good source and amp it well, and it shines. Does not flatter unless you find a good matching amp (can sound flat or boring on some DACs). Amazing expansive sound stage. Pairs well with a good tube amp or the new super small Radsone HUD100 DAC on "Dynamic" mode. Beyerdynamic T5p. Superb exciting travel and studio cans, really durable and rapid, controlled bass like a planar. Some of the best closed dynamic headphones for the price. Can comfortably wear them on street. Very good isolation. Change the pads though to velor. Hifiman Sundara. Total bargain for the price. No isolation with it being open though, so not as flexible as the Beyer and Ether. Very detailed bass. Denon / Fostex varieties / all great (Massdrop THX00, E-Mu Teak and older AH-D5000 my favourite ones) https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/survey-foster-443742-variants-subjective-listening-tests-denon-ah-d5000-massdrop-fostex-th - However not 'really' closed cans - more like open. Don't isolate well for studio or street usage. Hifiman Ayra - very detailed planar with amazing control. Easy to drive. I rate them above LCD-X but they are less dark, less weight in the low end. There are also some amazing Chinese IEMs around the $100-150 mark. Z Reviews has covered a lot of the good stuff. Beware the hype though. It gets expensive.

  26. I agree. You got to the heart of it there. And on top of that mindset he displays absolutely no learning, no knowledge, no talent for photography or film. A consumerist twerp in a baseball cap. The primitive dumb humour really is on his audience's level True! He does seem to be a genuine, authentic weirdo. What I have come to like about it is he does actually get it right. The actual camera musings are really solid. I even learn something from it. I have not learnt a single bit of knowledge from Kai. And Chris / Jordan just state the obvious... what could be written down in one paragraph stretches to over 10 minutes. It comes down in the end to why people watch YouTube Is it to learn about cameras and be entertained. Or is it to just be entertained only and indulge in some warm, fuzzy, consumerism? The way most people treat YouTube is same way as going shopping with friends for a new pair of Nike. Kai treats people with distain speaking from personal experience. At the last Photokina he was shooting with Blackmagic P4K. So I DM'ed Kai to see if he'd be up for a shoot. I always try to meet in person if I want to figure out what somebody is like. He said a vague yeah, totally uncommitted... really disrespectful. A day passes, nothing. He then actually started teasing me with photos of his BM P4K, while dodging the meet-up for a coffee. WTF? Then I pushed again to meet up and he ghosted me till the end of the show. He was literally in same show hall as me. And this is a guy who has not once reached out to EOSHD or used the forum, or referenced me in his work over 10 YEARS of being in same camera community!! So he can fuck off as far as I'm concerned and take his shitty videos with him.

  31. You'd 100% want a vest too. Not unless you're doing the shortest of shots, and only on an infrequent basis. I've had my F3 on a steadicam before (not me though, had a steadicam op), and yeah, it's not something to be handled lightly. (ha!) It is weird. Put a timecode box and a wireless RX on it for scratch. Pick any two (although all three is ideal, or in a pinch, just one) of: 1) wireless camera hop 2) timecode box 3) any SDC, or a very short shotgun (such as Sanken CS1e / CS-1M, Rode NTG5, Deity S-Mic 2S)

  33. To be honest what Dan Sasaki from Panavision says is much more valuable to me than what you wrote.You can read my private conversation i had with him. These are only DIY prototypes and there is no hacksaw involved, even a child would know that these would of course benefit from a new housing , but since I am not selling it or launching anything on the market I am not worried. But most of all please do not worry at all about my children, I am the father. How dare you!

To be honest I also had some doubt about the multiple horizontal flares, I have contacted Mr Dan Sasaki Panavision optical engineer to have an opinion about my scopes and my experiments. I had a lovely chat with the guy. You can read the answer on the screenshot I have attached from my private messenger .There is no grading at all in the photo I 've posted. No I haven't paid full price for my lenses , it is an early investment I did when the anamorphics weren't so expensive like in these days,, I am glad I did though, most of these were quite cheap as well since they had small issues. This is a quick flare test I did quite long time ago with this scope

  38. No offense, but this is pointless. I mean, maybe if you have too much time on quarantine it's an interesting hobby, but it looks like you simply ruined schneider cinelux lenses. Any cheap sankor lens can do much better than this, with nice waterfall background. Get yourself a good cinelux and it will be a proper lens with good image, that won oscar. I don't know what's a point in these, they look hacked together, not suitable even for lowest budget indie productions. I don't think any DP would put that on their camera. Maybe you should look at Rapido Technologies, they make good products like cases for anamorphics with engravings. etc. They still don't look very good, just a dull black pipe, but anything would look better than this. I think this would scare away any model or client when they see it in front of the camera. Maybe that explains why you only photograph kids and have no serious work to show with these.

  39. Sorry, I did not mean to sound mean. But this is not how internet works, I am free to voice my opinion. I see a BS post and I call it out. OP pretentiously talks about "galilean action" and "horizontal artifacts", yet the images are highly uninspiring home shots with some of the ugliest flares I've seen. Then he proceeds to post lenses that look butchered. It seems he just took a hacksaw to some schneider cinelux lenses, then butchered some other lenses and randomly paired elements until he got a useable image. Using pseudo scientific terms to describe this process does not make it anything different. Just pure lens hacking. Pointless exercise, because no self-respecting DP will use something like this to shoot anything remotely important. Sure, if you want to learn by destroying lenses – go ahead. They don't make them anymore though. But what really worries me is that I see at least 4 different kids in these shots. I don't know how old OP is, and I don't want to assume their gender, but this is not normal.
