  1. Remember it ? All the usual caveats of "absolutely not its final form" but thought I'd show a (very) rough glimpse of its (very) rough format. Things have been quiet on it publicly because as I said in the very original thread that what was first shown was merely a jumping off point and it pivoted into what is now a very different product. As you should now be able to guess from this image, it is doing something a little different and offers both AF-S and AF-C modes for, lets just say, more than one focus target The purpose of this thread, aside from the update to prove its not slid into Sony A7S-III territory, is to provide little updates on what is happening as we edge towards release of the actual product particularly as the previous thread is a bit defunct in terms of what its final form will now be. I'll put up some video samples soon, although @Andrew Reid has had some over the past month so should be able to vouch for it actually working I won't be getting too much into the detail about whats going on under the hood until later on and I will be doing a blog post with Andrew to provide more insight nearer the time of pre-orders which should be in August. FYI, the cables you can see are powering the PBC and not going to the camera so no camera mod is required ! So, for now, fire away if you have any questions if you have any interest in it but if you can please just keep it to general operational stuff.

  2. Thank you. This wasn't the specific issue but it lead me down the right path. The issue has been solved. Your suggestion that I hook the camera to my computer monitor to figure out if it was the monitor or the camera helped a lot. The computer monitor was able to tell me my HDMI output wasn't supported by the monitor. Which was strange because my computer monitor is way newer than my camera. When I lowered the HDMI output settings (down to 1920x1080p from 3840x2160 (24p)clean out) of the NX1 when the monitor wasn't plugged in, both the computer monitor and the Feel World F5 became usable and the buttons on the camera became functional. I had set the HDMI out settings to Clean Out do to a recommendation from youtube, but it turns out that this lowers the functionality of my camera with this monitor. Thanks for the help. Hope this helps someone else in the future.

The S1H with the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 is beginning to look like the optimum combination for what I want. I note that Hawk-Woods do a dtap-dummy battery so power isnโ€™t an issue. Might wait until October to purchase just in case Sony announce something special in the interim...

  6. Many years ago there was this thing called FILM. It came in rolls that only lasted for MINUTES. You paid to buy it and paid again to develop it. It wasn't even REUSABLE. Madness!! But seriously, if you're having a hard time with RAW file sizes then RAW isn't for you. In fact, RAW isn't for most of the people on this forum. A blind test comparing RAW to Prores would pretty quickly show that compressed formats are good enough for almost everything.

  7. I'd rather have 5K 60p RAW than 8K 30p RAW.

  8. The ALL-I codec on this camera is REALLY good. Maintains a LOT more in the shadows than the Long GOP IPB mode. It is 400Mbit so quite big files but a lot smaller than RAW at 1800Mbit. This is one of those occasions where 400Mbit is worth it... (Shadows pushed up approx. 3 stops in Resolve) 4K ALL-I 4K Long GOP IPB

  9. Hallo friends, Before one buys a camera one of the rather important things for professional video is a reliable battery solution. That includes not only adequate battery life but precise power meterting and levels as well. It is very unpleasant to say the least to have a camera shut down during filming. My Lumix S1 has shut down twice in a row now at 20% power left. After six months of moderate usage the original battery seems not reliable anymore. Anyone of you S1 owners and users with the same issue? I am planning on selling my camera, as I am not willing to test and test for battery issues and to have to bother with doubts. Hopefully some of you can give some insights. Otherwise awesome sensor and soso menues. Pipeline in 8bit is also impressive. Cheers

  10. Well, itโ€™s been 8 months since I completed this and almost a year since I promised @mercer to post it once completed I donโ€™t really know what to say about this, itโ€™s my first short and I wanted to try this medium after trying music, photography, drawing/painting and all sorts of writing in order to figure out myself and my depression. It took me months to complete due to my mental state and lack of energy and I intended to post this sooner, but life can be a little too much sometimes. Or very often in my case. Even though it was the hardest creative thing Iโ€™ve done in my life, (despite having a background or experience in most of the separate artforms that make up a film) I was really lost in the entire process and I developed love/hate relationship to it. I wanted to quit all the time when I wrote it, when prepping, when shooting and during the long, motivational drainage that is editing. But I guess thatโ€™s also where the love was born. No matter all the mistakes I made, I could somehow save it and make a decent first short thanks to the editing by re-arranging the pieces I had. Throw away most of it, stretching what was left of it, slowing or speeding up some of it, playing some of it in reverse. Dubbing in new sound (needed, cause most of it was unusable. Note to self: Donโ€™t forget sound! Iโ€™ve tried to make another short since, but havenโ€™t completed the shoot. I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™ll finish that one, itโ€™s just a silly comedy I made with my then girlfriend, now fiancรฉe on my phone (This one was shot on the DVX200 before anyone asks, cameras are important on this forum apperantly, hehe) because she wanted me to make something less depressing, but I guess Iโ€™m just a gloomy guy, all my new ideas are based on my different malfunctions. Hopefully Iโ€™ll work up enough energy to make another, I really want to. Anyway, enough talking. I hope youโ€™ll give this a go and give me some pointers, but go easy on me, okay? Now, pick you poison: https://vimeo.com/272702923 https://youtu.be/rsXdjH4I5YA

    1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6

No problem here. It plays smoothly with a lut applied and some basic adjustments (4K DCI timeline). macOS 10.13.6 - i7 8700K - 1080Ti Resolve 16.2.2 Maybe bad hackintosh configuration? Resolve version? *edit: - This is true when using metal GPU processing mode. I tried with OpenCL and I get 8-11fps maximum.

You can just have Resolve generate optimize media..... you pick the in and out on a rough manner, drop it in the media bin and then right click all the clips and hit generate optimized media (the setting of the format are in the timeline setting). Then in edit and color tab you can just turn on and off optimize media.... very easy. This is the way I edit on my 3 years old notebook.

  14. The lens control protocols of those cameras don't lend themselves particularly well to direct positioning but having said that neither does the Pocket6K and we managed to develop a solution for that in the PBC so it will happen but not immediately. A universal version that supports motors would be ahead of it in the queue as it can be used for both manual lenses on cameras that don't have particularly appropriate external control like the Panasonic but also of course for manual lenses on BM cameras.

Both internal and external on the A7s2 are better than the A73. NR is just way heavier.

  16. The cameras themselves are already streaming from the scene so a lowish res additional stream would be viable or even a full res one for encoders using multi bonded cellular uploads. An enterprising small company with a good stock of Araldite could build a witness camera into an encoder to enable this setup with all the existing cameras out there.

    1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6

You didn't, I was just having a little fun while also making a point. I think that the RAW vs compressed comparison doesn't align with still images at all because of the way that compressed stills handle DR. Compressed stills clip the DR of the camera, which is why many people shoot RAW. Personally I think that's blindingly stupid when it's just as easy to make a JPG from the whole DR of the RAW image, like any free image editor can do but somehow cameras costing thousands of dollars can't do. If shooting log h264/h265 cut off a couple of stops of DR then we'd all be lusting over RAW and having t-shirts printed about it as well, but thankfully, we're not.

  18. Many people report battery problems, on the dedicated s1 Facebook groups, and, for example, on dpreview where someone tried to investigate the issue : https://***URL removed***/forums/thread/4461103?page=5 I encountered problems too, like the conflincting infos between camera and charger... One day, I had my charger indicating 100% for 2 batteries, and when I put them in camera, it showed around 70 or 80%. I also had shutdowns with many % remaining. I have 5 original batteries, not very used so no time wearing at work here. I will pay attention to this when I will be back to Shoot.

Baby Hypergonar 1.75x, Iscorama 36 non mc, Baby Isco Gottingen Anamorphot 1.5x, Bolex Moler Anamorphot 16/32 1.5x and Aivascope Pro 1.5x are very good anamorphic, when paired with the right lens Primes such as LINOS Me-Vis C-mount 35mm f1.6 and Pentax-m 40mm f2.8 are my favorites

  21. In light of what has been going on covering protests recently, I think ENG cameras might have to have secondary dash cam type of units onboard to provide both the broader context and provenance of what we are seeing through their main lens. If I was out there covering the current protests I'd have a 360 camera in the hotshoe already.

Here's some seriously underexposed S1H 4K DCI ALL-I footage (original and denoised/graded) at ISO51200. To me it looks better than ISO4000 on the GH5 which I used in my debut feature film in a night scene. I'm quite impressed with the latest firmware update 2.0. I think when exposed properly I can easily push it one stop further in grading to get usable ISO102400 https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1zbdx7sq9yymT12_7ddr2v0uXFy2h8T24?usp=sharing

  25. They are just screwing their contributors, like they did many times in the past without any consequence. Their portfolio is soaring. Why would they stop milking the digital slaves? Between Q1 2019 and Q1 2020: "Image collection expanded 27% to approximately 330 million images." "Video collection expanded 29% to approximately 18 million clips." 30% portfolio increase in a year! It's going to take more than a few grumpy folks on forums and quickly forgotten headlines to change their policy. As long as shareholders are happy, it's all good. After the 2020 Q1 release, the CFO explains that "we expect to produce significant earnings and free cash flow in 2020, allowing us to continue paying a quarterly dividend and reinvesting in our business." So most likely, the precious shareholders position is secured, perhaps with the shares taken from the contributors to offset the effects of the Covid-19. And by the way, this company is financially healthy. They have a good amount of cash and no debt "We are well positioned financially with $296 million in cash and no debt" according to their CFO. As mentioned before, net income alone is not a good way to assess a company situation. Their EBITDA is solid and increasing over the years, especially considering that they have no debt (the I part of EBITDA). The ratio are not amazing but not bad. See their annual reports. There is no surge in operating expenses over the year despite massive portfolio increase which clearly contradicts the possibility of booming hosting and content review cost. The 2019 report says " Depreciation and amortization expense increased by $4.7 million as compared to 2018, to $40.4 million in 2019, driven primarily by the depreciation of our capitalized internal-use software. We expect that our cost of revenue will increase in absolute dollars in the foreseeable future to the extent our revenue grows". In other word, hosting fee is no hurting the EBITDA. Which explains why Shutterstock never tried to seriously limit or remove unsold assets as they don't represent a big cost.

  27. Please give us some more details sir! We need specific info... 1. Lens in use when power cut 2. AF mode in use, or was it manual focus? 3. Ambient temperture - roughly 4. Video mode - 4K/60p? or 24p? 5. Age of battery and did the problem only start occuring under same conditions as battery aged? Please help me reproduce the error with my S1. And I will pass the results onto Panasonic in the UK who will feed it back to Japan.

  28. After firmware 2.0 I see less reasons to do so. Would love some more less cropped high frame rate options. Overall 2.0 is quite impressive for V-Log. Magenta tint seems gone Orange/yellow lights won't burst into noise anymore Sharpening seems to be turned off Noise reduction -1 fixes the motion related issues, also much nicer grain pattern which matches the framerate (temporal NR seems to be gone entirely) Here's a small test I did for an upcoming music video https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pUW5itKQn2Jjz1pqkqh4sPxB-IgnOWgE/view?usp=sharing

  29. I'll do a proper post but for now here it is (obviously in a "project" housing) surrounded by clues. There is a bluetooth element to it. There is a single presenter/operator element to it. There is a control per feature element to it. There is certainly a customisable element to it. There is a no need to bring a computer element to it. There is also an optional expansion element to it. The main clue of its purpose is actually the Araldite ....

  38. Still very restricted here about how far we can go from home but managed to use some of our allotted exercise slot this evening to take a bit more footage with the FP/45mm/Anamorphot. And yes, that is a snake in the bottom left of the top picture. And yes, I did shit myself when I saw it.

  39. Well, inspired by your post, I thought I might sort out a setup today. Nowhere on the same level as your ones but here is my very compact L mount full frame RAW anamorphic setup. Taking lens is the Sigma 45mm and the (currently) less than ideal anamorphic element is provided courtesy of a pretty fucked SLR Magic Anamorphot-40 1.33x Compact. I got the Anamorphot-40 very cheap used about 18 months ago and it literally fell apart like a clown car the second time I tried to use it and as you can see it hasn't fully been re-constructed as yet ! Obviously, when picking up the separate parts of it I managed to get barrel grease all over the elements (front and back of both of them no less) so it needs a proper clean as well as a few more screws. I think I might persevere with that though as I think it will be worth the effort as even in its current smeary condition its got some promise from the couple of quick tests I did.

  41. If the EOSHD site was solely about cameras, and that was it, full stop, then I say a ban on politics is fine. However, Andrew's site has always been a place that is non-corporate and "unsterile," if you will. He's not afraid to drop his opinion and that's why I stick around. If I want bland regurgitated information, there's plenty of on-line options for that. Crossing the line is something all of us but the most rhetorically disciplined have been close to doing, but erring on the side of staying respectable isn't too hard to do. And, ultimately, EOSHD is a site that prioritizes gear, but also exists as a refuge for aspiring filmmakers. Filmmakers should have passion. Otherwise, what are we? Just content creators? That's okay for some I guess, but standing for one's ideals with integrity and rationality should be a filmmaker's or artist's ethos. One of the most influential people in my life was a high school teacher that was willing to engage us students. He would talk about the world and encourage us to participate in it as productive citizens. His lectures were fascinating revelations about his value system and why it worked. Often times we would stray from that semester's syllabus and spend the whole hour just chatting about ideas. We were a room of equals simply by the way he behaved and respected us, a bunch of dumb high-schoolers that really didn't deserve such treatment... but there he was giving us agency when every one else in the system, it seemed, wanted to make sure we stayed in our place. Funny thing was, he was an auto-shop teacher. The other funny thing was that he was a staunch conservative. An 'all-in' Reaganite; can't even count how many times he went on about Thatcher either, to give you an idea. I thought his ideas about society we're complete and utter rubbish. Still do. But the fact that he didn't beat me down with ad-hominem attacks because I disagreed with him, and encouraged me to debate made him the best teacher I ever had. I still can't do a valve job properly and fix a timing chain, but he let me realize how important it was to have integrity, a slightly more important lesson. Meanwhile I had a liberal English teacher so far up her own ass you couldn't say one thing to her sideways without her feeling insulted. And she was teaching writing for god's sakes! So there you go. My anecdotal response. Whoopie-de-doo. Bottom line, conservatives ain't all bad, but some are. Liberals ain't all bad, but some are. Be kind and try to ignore the true jerks that just don't want to respect you.
