    there are a lot of stories about "Initializing" staying there for minutes. Very slow start up time. Restart the camera after a glitch, usually when one uses the pre-roll function. tha fans hit so hard that are soundmen nightmare e.t.c It is well know in the industry that is a "special" breed of cameras, and some cameramen call them "producers choice", not DPs or cameramen.

  5. It's not bright at all in RGB mode and huge in footprint. Do not recommend. I went with Vijim V-2 which is 50$ on Ali, 200 gramm, compact, has 3 hour fast charge battery inside, various effects and freakishly bright for its size. And yeah, you can stick it to metal as it has a magnet back. I do recommend this one

  7. My take is when cameras get cheaper, people are able to spend more on lenses. That’s better for the consumer because the same amount of money spent will hold its value because it is not spend on some thing disposable like a digital camera body. The consumer is better off in the long run with $98k in lenses and a $2k camera body than $40k in lenses than $60k in a camera body. Probably the best solution is $10k for 3 cameras and sound and $90k In lenses, if you can afford it...

    That may be true though there are definitely many DP's who like RED, probably less though for camera OP's lol. RED's are definitely known to be quirky. If we want to hate on companies though Blackmagic has been plagued with issues. Especially the older cameras though even with the 6k. Almost like they put their cameras out without any real testing. Uneven magenta tints that ruin your image, that were put in tons of cameras. I've never heard anything like that from RED. I guess it doesn't really matter with Blackmagic though as their cameras are so cheap. But in terms of data loss I've never heard any complaints particular to RED. I've recently heard a ton of data loss stories about the S1H. I mean any production where a lot of money is on the line there are going to be a many cameras on set. One camera going down isn't going to hinder a production. Arri is the standard for reliability which is definitely why its still the industry standard on high end productions. But not many have the cash to rent one and even less buy one.

Yeah, the external ND thing is a lot less of a pain in the arse if you just have a single zoom like that and can just leave it on without titting about with different sizes and step up/down rings. I didn't realise that Fuji have just released that GF45-100mm f4 OIS though so ignore everything I said about the FZ2000 and buy that for your GFX100 instead. That combo is definitely a contender for "and then turn the internet off" status

    I'm presuming you are looking at the Leitax adapters ? I've never installed them myself and it looks straightforward enough but I think the path of least resistance (or prospect of damage!) would be to enquire with a camera repair place like Sendeans and ask them if they can quote to install the Leitax adapters for you if you source them. https://www.sendeancameras.co.uk/free-estimates Other places to consider would be ApertureUK and Fixation.

  11. Maybe get yourself a cheap 2nd hand Panasonic FZ2000. Its got everything needed Big lens range with OIS Internal NDs VLOG Flip out articulating screen Decent battery life Decent codec Then just restrict yourself to using that and only that for a month or whatever. The restriction will probably get you going again creatively as it takes the "what if?" factor out of the equation and at the end of the month you'll have likely gained a clear set of requirements of what it is you actually need and can then put those packages together out of what you've got. Seems counter intuitive to buy another camera to stop you buying more cameras but spending £500 on that one will get you closer to enlightenment than buying another lens ! Then when you're done with it, it'll make the perfect camera for your upcoming series of YouTube rants

  12. Vivo details their gyro sensor stabilization - 3x movement compensation in comparison to traditional OIS. Now, the sample video is fishy: comparing against OIS for walking, which is insane, since EIS produces superb results and that should be the benchmark.   16. Lovin it. Filmed some leefs and branches moving in the wind outside my window today. Light was glowing. My dirty window glass giving beautifuls distortion to the image. Filmed in 8bit internal SLOG with my latest GAS powered Sony F3 and Tokina 28-70. Heavy beast of a camera, which will heal my GAS! Shot the same sight with my Panny S1 afterwards, 8bit rec709 profile. Both cameras gave me beautiful images. What an afternoon, feeling completely satisfied :) Loved the text of your video @jgharding

A Minister drops every week... Two (!) Ministers of Health, the Minister of Justice Moro... just in a few weeks, WOW Flávio Migliaccio, the Brazilian Jack Lemmon, has just committed suicide : ( Lima Duarte who I had the luck to personally meet and establish a very friendly connection with, when he shot with a former instructor of mine from film school, he looks like a fishbowl with no water in a different planet he did his best trying to educate, one of the richest promised lands worldwide. The official Minister of Education of today and go figure the Foreign Affairs' guy (who almost had the President's son for Ambassador in Washington with US experience based on his gig background selling fast food and without having clue who Kissinger was, as he himself admitted LOL hilarious to say the least) they look like a pair of clowns in a circus straight down from the hell instead. So pity all of this and sad to see the mass murder everyday in the news... : -( Mercy for Brazil!

  18. However nice the cameras may be, I have no idea how Panasonic plans to make a success of this system. The most likely target market is high-end Nikon and Canon shooters, but they’re used to their respective brands, have a stable of lenses, and want autofocus that works. Micro 4/3 shooters moving up? Maybe a few, but there’s no interoperability between systems. They could just as easily move to R or Z mount, or even Fuji. That leaves video shooters, but are there enough to make this viable?

  19. It would be interesting to play around with that Olympus curve control and try and dial in a pleasing “graded” image straight of camera in 8-bit. I wonder if it works with OM-Log on the EM1 variants and if there is any advantage of doing adjustments in camera before the image is backed into a 8-bit codec? Does the curve adjustment happen before the encoding?

  21. In some sectors, Chinese are just closing the gap and sometime, even beating western companies. Drone is one of these sector. Innovation and production cost are two different things. Plenty of consumer product companies do innovate and place their production line in low cost countries. DJI are just the best at what they do. They did it first and much better than the competition. Initially the French company Parrot had an edge in he drone consumer market but their product were cheaply made. DJI moved up market and proposed higher end drone (Phantom) able to carry a GoPro, then a gimbal (zenmuse), then they integrated the gimbal and camera on the drone with a nice ready to fly package (Phantom 3). Meanwhile Parrot proposed the piece of crap Bebop which was just an horrible product (I know, I was one of the product ambassador). The Parrot Anafi was better but by that time, DJI became a giant and it was impossible to close the technological gap. Therefore Parrot left the drone consumer market. The same thing happened with American 3DR: they just designed bad drones (IRIS, Solo, etc.) which were under-powered or poorly tuned. The 3DR production line in Mexico didn't help with cost neither. GoPro also made the same mistake with the Karma, it took them years to develop, they wanted to do everything in house and meet the market with a drone that was already obsolete by the time it was release. I approached them for technological consulting but they knew better than the rest of the world at the time... GoPro tried to compete with the Phantom when DJI released the Mavic 1. Guess what? The Mavic 1 was sold out for months while the Karmas were crashing out of the sky due to the battery fiasco. GoPro quickly quit this market with massive financial loss. And unlike the camera or phone industry, DJI didn't copy or catch up with anybody, they create their own market with technological and commercial innovation. They came up with ready to fly bundle in what was a DIY industry. They made everything nice and simple by innovation, improving existing solution (e.g. the controller and tablet integration introduced by parrot with the horrible and massive skycontroller). They didn't fear to cannibalize their on product line and they sunk the competition with extremely fast product cycle (sometime less than a year between each release). I now believe that DJI is unbeatable due to its commercial and technological advance. At least on the short-medium term. I've been working in the drone industry since the early 2010s and no one comes close to DJI. I've seen countless drone start up crash. Even Autel is just catching up with DJI and their technology is way behind DJI. They obviously don't master the stabilization issue. DJI R&D department is probably as big as the entire Autel company. DJI is also the only drone company with a good digital link. Autel radio range don't even come close and they would have to spend millions in R&D to reach that level. A few years ago, a drone company in Asia tried to develop an Ocusync alternative but they quickly abandon due to the cost: R&D alone was in millions, then came MOQ (minimum order quantity) from supplier which were also very large to be competitive. So no, innovation is what made DJI. Western companies just performed poorly and they lost. It has nothing to do with production cost. As for the industrial/military market, this is a completely different world. Industrial drone is a niche market which is being tackled by DJI, and they are pushing more and more in this direction because the consumer market is becoming saturated. Incoming regulation are not going to help neither. As for the military, many countries will just exclude a Chinese provider.

  23. I like the S1 and still considering one but has 2 negatives for me and those are it’s size and the AF. Really I would need to test one, with a lens, (obviously) but that’s not a very easy thing to do in rural South West France...

  24. Somehow it was discouraged to further add to the thread. Anyway, I had to shoot a very short clip over the weekend. It is so easy. I dropped it into Davinci Resolve - engaged the Blackmagic Film setting in the camera drop down (as some have advised not to), didn't use ACES, adjusted a bit of exposure, contrast and saturation and it looked great. Job done.

My camera and Pi has arrived and I'm happy to say it's going to fit very nicely in a (broken and unusable) Bolex B8 - by my calculations, the sensor size is similar to that of 8mm film, so I'm planning on taking off the C-mount from the sensor and placing to look through the D-mount lenses on the camera. Which will also let me hang onto the turret system. As my camera is already broken, I'm going to have to gut it, so it's essentially the most hipster RPi case around, but I'm fine with that. There's tonnes of room for a power bank etc. to keep everything nicely held inside. Can possibly keep the mechanism too so I can make cool noises while filming. I just need to wrap my head around some buttons and switches. I'm quite digging the idea of opening the side of the camera to turn the system on and off every time, but definitely need a trigger on the outside of the casing. I'm also toying with the idea of setting 15 second record limits to really embrace the annoyance of a wind-up system. When all is said and done, it's going to look something like this:

  26. I just want a board sensor that covers 16mm and has dual pixel AF so I can hack my 16mm camera apart and replace the ground glass with a CMOS and have reliable AF on a film camera.

  29. Already have decided to leave Brazil after the unavoidable recession diminishes (impossible to live in a country where 30% of the population support inconditionally a genocide president that have ties with organized crime), probably someday we will arrange a meeting between these cameras.
