  1. Even without VLOG, I'm loving this camera and floored by the colors and dynamic range. Here are a couple screengrabs from a shoot I was on yesterday, using the HLG profile. I'm very, very excited to get my hands on the log upgrade. I think this is the first time I've ever had a video camera where I'm actually choosing the DR I want scene-to-scene at my discretion, rather than being forced to deal with limitations of the camera. There's plenty of room in the shadows and highlight roll-off is silky smooth. Color me impressed.

I'm a manual lenses guy. I despise auto focus for my filming. Even when it works I find it more of a curse than a blessing. Weirdly, I like it when subjects move out of focus and someone on the other side of the lens makes an organic correction to maintain it. And I love a slightly sloppy but creative rack focus. It's a neat trick of the craft. I'd rather have imperfections created by humans than perfection created by programming. Am I simply justifying my anachronistic (read: old fart) attitudes or do I really have a legitimate point? Am I alone? Is anyone else attracted to this?

  6. No they don't compare. They are way more suitable for 97% of the situations that the average pro photographer encounters.

  8. Time of Flight / LiDAR continuous autofocus is really quite remarkable technology. There are rumours Panasonic will implement it on future cameras like the GH6. Don’t you wish the current autofocus-challenged cameras like the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K or GH5 could have amazingly smooth Dual Pixel AF-like performance? Well, you could soon be in luck. Time of Flight Autofocus is a reality and I’ve seen it working. With this prototype add-on, a Time of Flight sensor sits in the hotshoe and talks wirelessly to the Pocket 4K. The autofocus motors in the Micro Four Thirds lens are commandeered based on real-time depth sensing information from the LiDAR beam. I met up with CDA-TEK’s Ian (BTM_Pix on the forum) this week in Manchester to take a look at what he’s been working on. Read the full article

  12. It looks good. Are you missing those Canon colors from the 5D3? Panasonic greens can be a pain in the ass. But I think you did a good job. Great detail. The music, shots and color grade gave the piece a melancholy, nostalgic feel. Your model is very pretty as well. What does this mean?

  13. I only ever use AF for macro. If I was interested in a camera that turned out to be MF only in video I wouldn't care even a little. In my mind, "automatic focus" is still no yet invented.

Narrative definitely manual. For everything else AF is very helpful.

  15. No one is arguing that a Phase One does not have higher quality in a studio setting. But let me ask you this, would you recommend it on a safari? Is it great for shooting sports? Street photography? I suspect you would end up with many blurry 150MP images. The only medium format camera that could be passable in street use is the GFX100. But even so, it’s largely a niche camera. And how is the Phase One as a hybrid camera? Yeah, that’s what I thought. For almost all photographers the Canon, Nikon, Fuji and Sony offering are far superior. And btw... how does that 150MP image look on instagram? I suspect no better than any of the much more mainstream offerings.

  16. With the overall positive reception of the S1 firmware update and the very pleasing image coming out of Panasonic’s new full frame camera, I’m thinking the S1H is going to be something special. The L-mount is building a lot of momentum with Sigmas fp and forthcoming glass and Panasonic’s usual firmware feature bonanza. Really quite impressed with Panasonic’s push here in a crowded full frame market and grim camera industry outlook.

  17. I was talking to a local photographer who also flips cameras as much as I do (we meat every time one buys something of the other). We remenissed about cameras we had used, sold, loved and hated. But we both agreed on one thing, no matter what you buy or sell, you always keep a GR in your kit. It's the only thing that's constant.

  19. Personally, the A7riv is the first interesting model since the original A7. So I'm not hating on it. I actually wish I could justify the cost.. ..But... Hilarious irony for someone who has been told a million times that I'm an idiot for shooting a camera with 2016 video specs.. only to see Philip Bloom of all people point out that the Sony flagship is using 2015 video specs.. I spilled my coffee laughing. (And to be fare to Canon, it at least has 400mbit and 10-bit out with it's 2016 specs.)

  20. Kisaha, I have a lot of m4/3 lenses (maybe 20? and Canon) but use Olympus 12-100 lens a lot. It is great because it is a constant f/4 and has a great range. The lens is also very sharp and well built. The lens IS *does* help and works well. I also use the Panasonic 12-35 & 35-100 f/2.8 lenses regularly. I find that I use the Olympus 12-100 lens in run/gun situations more than the Sigma 18-35 because of the better zoom range on the Olympus (plus you get IS). After reflecting on the issue, I think that the focus issues with the Olympus lens that day were mostly due to the environment in which I was shooting. It was very bright outside and I was running handheld (cage, side handle, SmallHD monitor on top). If you hold the camera still when focusing, the one touch focus works well. If you move the camera while focusing, you can cause the camera to freak out. I suspect that I didn't do a very good job holding the camera still that day In the studio and most other times, the one touch focus has worked very well. I can't recall ever having that many focus issues before on a shoot, so, I chalk my problems that day up to user error. It didn't help that I couldn't see the screen very well in direct sunlight.

  21. They left money on the table, they could have priced it at $199 for the challenge!

  22. That’s exactly my point. Comparing a Hasselblad or Phase One to cameras designed to be used outside of a studio is just plain silly. Sure, the medium format cameras may have an edge in ultimate image quality. But neither is a well suited street camera, travel camera or sports camera. They’re just not made for that sort of work. As I’m not a studio photographer those cameras have zero value for my use.

  23. A7S2 - VSCO Presets, WB adjust and minor desaturation on specific colors. I find the darker tones to be more harder to nail a good skin (the girl has indian tone) but usually get good skintones right away, gonna get A7III I bet it'll be even easier ?

  27. Because there is no hunting involved by the lens and its told to go directly to a specific position without passing go or collecting £200 then any speed differences that there may be are far less apparent if visible at all. Yes it could target the zoom operation equally as it could focus but I don't know how familiar you are with MFT powered zooms but the bumpy violence with which they move to positions would make your shot look like a shark attack shot from Jaws rather than the beach scene with Brody. He needs to contribute a bit more then as I'm currently doing all the graft while he's clearly sloping off every afternoon to play golf or get a pedicure.

    Compact Tripod?

I won an auction for an “open box” Manfrotto tripod. It was a stupid price... $32. I thought it was just the legs but when it arrived it was brand new, never opened and it came with a head. Honestly, I forget the model because, like you, I rarely use a tripod but I recently tested the head (it’s one of their less expensive RC heads) and I was floored by the fluid pan. I may buy another head for a monopod to keep everything the same. I don’t want to spend too much on this because I may get a slider and a small gimbal for my BMMCC. I’ve never used one but they do look finicky... but like you said, if you need an impossible angle from an impossible mounting position... what other choice do you have? Great idea with the plastic cup... I think I’ll buy one of those collapsible camping cups.

  30. anyone interested should hop on the facebook group an petition for a small-flange version of the s35 and FF models, due to be released with EF and PL mounts only. Kinson Loo is active on the page - one of the most appealing things about the camera: the management and techs are on there, and there is a sense they are learning and constantly perfecting the camera software.

I don't think I have posted this before, mainly because I look terrible in it. Several years ago I used the Tokina 28-70 and a SLR Magic anamorphot together and on a super35 sensor (Samsung NX1) and it worked. It gave a very pleasant look as well. I'm wondering if using the new SLR magic adapter would enable it's use on full frame. If so that would be a full frame anamorphic zoom for ~$2000.

  34. The camera has one job, process an image. If it needs 3-4 minutes work per image just to make people look normal.. that's not exactly awesome imo. It's like whith the white balance in Slog2. Defenders always claimed that setting the right WB needed extra time and effort and that is perfectly normal.. yeah no.. in every other camera on earth it's a basic setting that takes two seconds and always has. I love Sony cameras. I've bought many, way more than Canons. And I can get really nice looking images and colors out of them, no problem. But doing it fast, efficient and consistent compared to CaNikon, PanaOly, or even Pentax and Leica.. not so much.

    Compact Tripod?

What's reasonably priced for you? ? I use the Sirui T-005 that @Mattias Burling turned me on to years and years ago when he also sold me on the original Pocket. It's nice and compact, and I think was in the $150 range. It's well made, all aluminum, and I usually carry it on the side of my backpack when traveling. Looks like it has gone down in price! Sirui T-005X Aluminum Tripod with C-10S Ball Head, 8.8 lbs Capacity, 58" Height, 5 Leg Sections, Red https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01FG7X8TQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_qp6lDbNB5FQ46 $90 is a real good deal! Basically the same price as the Amazon brand one.

  37. Are you kidding me? The Canon image has her face in shadow and uses one source of indirect lighting from the left, sun seems to be on the right illuminating her hair. It's also at an angle that is flattering to her face. The Sony image has sun sources directly in front of her face, with a green bounce coming off the grass from in front of her. It's shot straight on. If anyone on this site besides you put up that original post they would have gotten raked over hot coals for it. Probably by you.

  38. I think people are confusing f-stops and t-stops. The f-stops--the physical size of the lens opening--are the same. They have not changed them. The t-stops--the objective amount of light being transmitted through that opening--are less, due to the lack of coatings.

  39. Probably not any time soon. I have a couple of the Atomos Ninja Infernos and I really like them. They are great recorders and monitors and I use them when I am on sticks. They are just too big and heavy for my liking when doing a small handheld rig. I have one of the P4Ks rigged with a cage, handle, and NP970 battery. It makes a nice little rig when used with a stabilized lens. I have also been using it a fair bit on a gimbal.
