The A7S-III is already here. It has; Sony BSI Exmor full frame sensor (highly likely) 10bit color sampling, internal and HDMI. 4:2:2 150mbp/s 4k internal. 6k full pixel readout (6k to 4k oversampling) 4k 60p in "Hollywood cine" super35 sensor size. Full size HDMI port. No recording limit in 4k 30p No overheating whatsoever. 14+ stops of VLog Wave form scopes. LUT support Fantastic color science. 4k raw over HDMI is on the way. See?...the A7S-III is here today! But its Panasonic that made it, not Sony. Its called S1.

I don't think I have posted this before, mainly because I look terrible in it. Several years ago I used the Tokina 28-70 and a SLR Magic anamorphot together and on a super35 sensor (Samsung NX1) and it worked. It gave a very pleasant look as well. I'm wondering if using the new SLR magic adapter would enable it's use on full frame. If so that would be a full frame anamorphic zoom for ~$2000.

Andrew, your test isn't fair. As the other forumer said, there's one photo shot with soft light in the shade and the other one with direct sunlight and green reflection from the grass. I totally agree with you about Canon (and Nikon, and even fuji) having better colors straight out of the camera than Sony, but the gap isn't as wide as those photos want it to be. And now with presets in lightroom, you can easily turn any camera into anything. And applying it to series of photos takes one clic. I wasn't liking my RX100 V photos because of the colors. I purchased VSCO presets to try them out, and I was stunned at the results. With just a bit of fiddling, and a few clicks, my RX100 turned into a fuji camera ! With a classic chrome esthetic. And the latest sony cameras have tremendously improved their color science. But again, I prefer Canon jpegs. No actually I prefer Fuji jpegs :P

If it was a blind test I would guessed it was shot on something far more expensive. So I meant "good"

See, even the big Sony fanboy admits it. You don't even have to try to make Sony's colour look bad. It just is bad. It made me laugh on the other thread, when a guy said I must have tried really hard to make her look that bad... When that was how the RAW looked straight after I opened it.
  9. 2 points
Opposite way round my friend. Took around 5 minutes? Now multiply that by 1000. You fix my photos. I'll pay you $1 for the lot. Still short of the Canon anyway. Exactly. White balance is baked into S-LOG 2. Then people put a totally different colour temperature on it with a LUT. No wonder it looks a bit weird. I remember that Sony recognised this was a problem and on the FS cameras you get to choose S-Gamut White Balance Color Modes like 5300K! Problem was, then you lost your usual AWB system and had to dive into the shitty Sony menus to select a preset. The Leica M9 is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. You open the RAW in Adobe, and then 2 seconds later, it's done. No fiddling or 5 minutes to fix problems. Do the same thing with a Sony and no matter what, people look like they have big red bags under their eyes, yellow shadow under their chin, magenta rashes and zombie-dead flesh where a nice healthy glow should be. It's much easier to fix greens and blues in landscapes if needed, than it is to fix skin. Skin is very complicated and you rely on the camera to get it right.
  10. 2 points
Canon sometimes isn’t the best for landscapes. There’s a focus on skin tones that sometimes take the oomph out of greens and blues. I find Fujifilm and Nikon to have a great balance overall, all subject matters considered. The Panasonic S1 looks fantastic. Every time I look at jpegs from Olympus OMD camera’s I come away impressed. Olympus colour is underrated.

He loves hard but not long. Hope this relationship lasts longer than his love affair with Panasonic!
  15. 2 points
I do. He slaps a film convert preset on them that makes all colors orange and thinks it looks cinematic in slow motion. Well, it doesn't and it looks awful.
  16. 2 points
I think people are confusing f-stops and t-stops. The f-stops--the physical size of the lens opening--are the same. They have not changed them. The t-stops--the objective amount of light being transmitted through that opening--are less, due to the lack of coatings.

Now you're just being picky The FP has enough dedicated buttons outside the screen edge to operate it effectively to be fair but even so a flip up option for the loupe would still be welcome. I remember there was a lot of excitement on here about that EVF when it was about to be announced but a lot of deflation when the price was revealed as it was twice what was anticipated. Its a well specced unit and a good price relative to others in that sort of market though.

Dropbox is roughly around that price, too. Google Drive though works well, and though it says you have a 2 TB limit I believe they don't actually enforce it. I have both, since a lot of people I work with use Dropbox and it's easier for them to use.

    Compact Tripod?

A decade ago when I shot on RED, Mark Toia extensively (exclusively?) shot on a monopod. Those Red Epic setups were fairly hefty, yet he got great results. He shot outdoors in exotic locations with rough terrain, and I think he was a major proponent of the monopod's suitability. I myself used a Monostat monopod with a manfrotto 701 head. I upgraded to the Gizto CF traveler tripod because it was nearly as light (2 pounds?) and maneuverable but obviously much more stable and flexible in use, and I've used that tripod more than any one camera, lens, etc.

Manfrotto's BeFree line is in the same vein as that Benro (if that's where your hunt is going), my sweetie seems content with her CF photo (read: ballhead) version. Alternately, I'm a big fan of the Velbon CF line though they'll double your budget at the very least. Finally, here's one that caught my eye at B&H, EImage 760AT, with a proper (and quite capable, for the price range) 75mm Bowl Head that's right in your budget. Hope that helps, and keep us posted on what you decide! :)

Here's about the best I could do, took around 5 mins. most of which was opening it up in camera raw, then Photoshop, then exporting as a jpeg and bringing it into resolve. However this test was clearly botched af my cousin shoots fashion on an old A7ii and he can make skin look pretty good imo https://www.anthonyjudge.com/cream-collection This was around 175 shots but only 6 made it into the magazine. I plan to film his next big shoot, so atleast then I can see how the a7ii's color will compare to my FS5's. I'm no photographer but 700 shots from a portrait session with a single model is asinine, unless its your girlfriend/wife. I'm getting more into Slog 2 now, unlike the Sony alpha cameras WB in slog2/3 is locked to 3 presets, 3200, 4400, and 5500K I believe. Alister C said its bc " The main reason is to ensure you get the cameras full dynamic range in each colour." I wonder why Alpha bodies don't lock the WB.

Seems to me you have to work quite hard with that Sony image in post to make it look that bad.
  35. 1 point
Canon produces nicer colors than Sony, yes, but no newer camera really "destroys" any other newer camera. They're all capable of producing good video, even Sony. The major difference is personal preference and workflow. Which is the best tool for your type of work? @Mattias Burling has always had the right attitude, I think. He uses the Canon EOS R because it's the right tool for him and his work. Nothing more, nothing less. He's not going on about how it "destroys" this camera or that camera, because even if it were true it's not really relevant. What's good for you might not be good for me and features that are important to you might not be important to me. All of these cameras will still be able to produce "good enough" images 5 years from now, even as new cameras with better specs get released, just as there are people producing good videos today using old GH cameras or old Canon Rebel cameras. You ask what camera can touch the Z6? Pretty much all of them, honestly. And that's okay. Almost all of the things you praise about the Z6, including the sensor size, are "specs." 😂
  36. 1 point
    That's a spec. Smartphones do 4K @ 60p. Full frame 4K 30fps ful sensor @ 10 bit - what m4/3 can do this? None because they aren't full frame.

I have a 256 gb Sandisk extreme pro 90mb Its not the fastest Sd card but it does the job and its cheaper than the faster ones. I will get faster card for photos but for video its not needed. sounds strange maybe but photos in raw+jpg fine can take a while to load from the sd card and to display for preview. Video is no issue.

On some Canons you can choose between the old and the new color in the menu for C-log. With Raw stills they have been very consistent. Shooting for example the 5D classic side by side with the 6Dmkii it's close enough that most wouldn't be able to tell them apart. BTW, you don't even have to be +70 to have been shooting ancient Canons professionally. Could be interesting to have an age poll because it seems to me that many here are old enough to remember the time before the DSLR revolution.

Is Van Gogh where Sony got their green-grey-yellow facial shadow tones from? On the Camera Portrait setting in Adobe Camera Raw, the raw file gives the impression she's standing next to a just-out of frame Slimer.
  44. 1 point
You can select Sony's camera presets in ACR as well. These are worse than the Adobe ones. We are not talking about JPEGs here, mainly RAW. Here is what the A7S II looks like after several hours of effort. CAMERA DEFAULT IN ADOBE: PAINFUL HARD WORK: CAMERA DEFAULT IN ADOBE: PAINFUL HARD WORK: Conclusion--- If you like painful hard work, buy a Sony.

I wanted to tell Panasonic how to fix their disappointing autofocus, but they seem to have figured it out on their own. Not bad. I hope they realize that ToF sensors have, ahem, other tricks up their sleeves, and use those for computational photography in ILCs.

99% of us on here do it for fun. This oh you Have to have a Canon shit, is just that, shit. Sure 5 years ago Sony CS was Wonky. I sort of liked the gritty look, no I loved the gritty look of the original A7s, the Sony RX10 mk I. It was a pleasant change for the Pat Boone look I sort of hate. That got to be old shit. But now with the Venice CS Sony looks more Canon than Canon does like it or not. So you like what you like. and I like what I like. How hard is that. I don't give a Rats Ass if you Ever buy a Sony. But don't knock everyone on here that does.
  47. 1 point
I bought into the numbers and spec game that Sony played for a couple of years (2015-2017). Used the A7s, A7rII, and FS5. 4K! 40+ megapixels! 240fps! I call these the dead years. Yes, I got some good stuff with them and thanks to a great colorist, was able to grade some films so that it looked great. But the day to day shoots, the general travel photos, the one-man band work, the portfolio of work that doesn't have professional colorist attached to it just isn't even in the same ballpark image quality wise as something from a Canon or Panasonic. While you use a Sony, you don't really realize that there is something off - you just get used to it. My wake up call is when I looked at old, 8-bit HD footage from my Canon 60D that I shot in 2012/2013. It just looked so much nicer, natural, and beautiful. Quickly tested out some new systems, felt the same about the footage I was capturing on those, and dropped Sony as quick as I could. Still love Canon and think they have the best CS and best image right out of the box, but Panasonic is very close and also give you the specs that Sony does. So, it's Panasonic for me right now. Maybe if Canon give us a 10-bit C100III with RF mount and a pro-body EOS R with 2020 video specs, they could come out ahead. But feels like Panasonic is the company that will give us what we want spec-wise while also giving us high image quality and color.

@Andrew Reid, some little observations: The write speed on the Z6 on the card is 240 MB/sec max and not 500 MB/sec as you imply: https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/nikon-z6/fastest-xqd-cards/ The Z6 camera is now listed at BH at $1,796.95 instead or the $1,996.95 original price: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1431706-REG/nikon_1595_z6_mirrorless_digital_camera.html?sts=pi&pim=Y I see no 30-40% reduction of the original price. The lenses cost the same as on launch day: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1431709-REG/nikon_20081_nikkor_z_35mm_f_1_8.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1431708-REG/nikon_20072_nikkor_z_24_70mm_f_4.html Nikon announced in April 4 2019 that we shall see eye AF in one firmware update (we got that in May) and the external RAW recording later in the year: https://www.nikonusa.com/en/about-nikon/press-room/press-release/jp1hlujr/Nikon-Brings-Powerful-Cinematic-Solutions-to-NAB®-2019-With-Z-Series-Cameras-and-MRMC-Broadcast-Automation-.html That's just 3+ months ago (not 6 months as you have written); patience is a virtue.
