    I had the original A7r, and it was pretty damn hard to get shots in focus do to camera shake even with the stabilized lenses on them. They are in a sense Too light to shoot with. And I did experience shutter shock even on a tripod. I had to hang a weight off the bottom of the tripod to make it stop at certain low shutter speeds. If I remember it was like 1/60, even 125th. They had a firmware update that helped but not completely. Even the A7r mk II with IBIS didn't cure it either because you shouldn't use IBIS on a tripod. But they were a lot better handheld. Electronic Shutter on A series cameras are the way to go for slower stuff. But when it worked they were pretty amazing output wise. A real bargain for what they cost. I recommend the, Even the original A7s even with Only 12mp has an amazing output Photos wise. You would be surprised how good they can do. These shots was taken with the A7s. As much detail I need unless I want to go really big print wise.

  2. Managed to activate my code today. From the first shot I could see the improvement. 10bit 422 V-LOG with V-Gammut has truly punted this thing into PRO CINEMA territory.

    Another 35mm here This one is the 3rd of the used lenses I got on my recent trip and is the Samyang AF 35mm f/2.8 FE for Sony. Its cheap, compact, lightweight, the AF is decent and its sharp. Against that is its not particularly fast (though that is offset somewhat by it being for FF cameras) and has about as much character as an Ikea cabinet. Definitely a good all rounder though for general travel stuff on a FF.

    Only two things on my to do list. 1. Pre-order this 2. Prepare for all the negativity spawned by hype and then disappointment when people realize that all Sigmas so far, lovely as they are, are iso100 cameras.

  8. This is a blind test comparing videos from a couple of different cameras, lenses and filters. I have not tried to match the images since that would take away the point of the test. Im looking at quick turnaround, color science as well as the effect different types of lenses and filters have on the final image. As you can see the light changed quite a bit between shots but it doesn't matter.

  10. I'm never going to sell my NX1/NX500 combo -- at this point I have gotten rid of all native lenses except the 16-50S and the 16-50 PZ (and I have one of Luca's speedboosters as well). But the NX500 with the hack enabling silent, electronic shutter is invaluable to me as a timelapse camera. While I have moved on to an S1/GH5 pairing for most of my paid work, the dynamic range of raw photos on the NX cameras at ISO100 is still basically unbeatable in my opinion. 28 megapixels, and shadows can be boosted to 100 in LR with zero downsides, it's amazing. Video-wise, while these cameras, some 5 years later, are finally, finally starting to get a little long in the tooth dynamic-range wise (and missing higher 4k framerates,) If you keep them locked down, in 4k 24p, the image is still so sharp and beautiful, and in reasonably low-DR scenes still does -- and always will -- achieve stellar results. For me, IBIS is a must-have now, and a real game-changer for my type of work. While the new Nikon cams are interesting, no 4k60p is very annoying, not enough of an upgrade from the NX cameras. The XT-3 is very cool, but has poor battery life and no IBIS. I have really been liking the S1 though. Its autofocus is not as bad as they say, especially with the recent update. Stills are technically lower resolution but hold detail far better at high ISOs than the NX1, which turns to mush after ISO 800 really. Of course, the S1 is also quite large and heavy. No perfect camera! Although the NX1, for its time, was pretty damn close.

    Thank you, thats very kind. I had an XT20 and used to use it for that but the issue was, with it being APS-C, the additional bulk of the faster lenses started becoming a bit self defeating in terms of keeping it compact. The appeal of switching to the A7Rii was having the option of using small M mount lenses (with AF on the TechArt adapter) as well as compact primes like this Samyang. When you look at the overall form factor of an A7Rii with say a 7Artisans 35mm f2 versus trying to get that equivalence on the XT20 which would be the 23mm f1.4 then it actually becomes quite marginal. Of course there is still the option in the A7Rii of switching to APS-C mode to use with the small Sigma primes as well so its a bit more versatile for me. Plus the resolution bump it has over the XT20 and IBIS of course ! I have a soft spot for the GX80 but its a similar story in some ways with regard to when you add equivalent lenses, particularly when you get speed boosters involved.

    Seems they need stacked Sony A9 sensor for better rolling shutter. But I am very happy with my Z6 and S1, and to have that sensor in a camera the size of an RX1 is truly game changing. A guaranteed must-buy for me.

    Seeing how y'all are shooting a lot of manual focus lenses, how do the different camera systems with 135/FF sensor compare when it comes to their EVF for manual focusing M-mount lenses? I'm considering Sony A7, A7R, A7 II, A7R II, Nikon Z6 or - very slim maybe - A7 III, looking for a camera that is as small+light (and ideally cheap, as it's not my main system) as possible to shoot M mount lenses, purely for photography (35/40/50/75mm lenses for portraits, etc., looking for feel&look, not technical perfection). I read that the A7R has some aliasing in the EVF that coincidentally actually helps see when stuff is in focus (comparable to the over-sharpening focus help in the SmallHD field monitors). EDIT: Unrelated, I can absolutely second the discussed Sigma 30mm DC HSM Art lens. With a focal reducer it's the perfect normal lens on m43 sensors and I love the rendering it gives. Pity there are so few APS-H cameras left besides the odd Sigma and some old EOS 1D.

    Now that's what I call a pocket cinema camera. Probably uses same BSI Sony sensor as the Nikon Z6 and Panasonic S1. The DNG I hope is to USB C SSD drive. Not going to be very ergonomic putting a big brick of a recorder on such a small pocket camera. Looks almost like an interchangeable lens Sony RX1 for stills... glorious. Knowing Sigma I am sure the price will be competitive. 4K ALL-I H.264 nice to see for internal recording. Any idea what bitrate? Sigma LOG? I see it has a Teal & Orange film style!! I love Sigma. Now let's hope RED don't claim patent dispute over Cinema DNG.

    Battery life has never been Sigma's strong point with their other cameras but the Foveon processing was a big drain so this should be different. However, having to play the video at 0.25x on YouTube to get these ( ) but it does look like it can be USB powered which makes things a bit easier. And talking of USB....... Unless that 2TB drive is there for show then it appears it might well record directly out of it as well.

    Not as yet. If I was to speculate, then as it doesn't have an EVF and is modular so the grip is extra etc then the base unit will have to be well below an existing FF mirrorless like an S1 that has those things to appeal to consumers? I'm going to be bold and say £1299 I wish it had an EVF add on option like the Leica T/TL though. But even as it stands, this is as close as it gets to a full frame original BMPCC.

  19. There is nothing nightmarish in this. Just the opposite, we have so many great affordable options to choose from now. Even though gear matters depending on the requirements, I don't really care because gear is not a limiting factor anymore. Unlike a few years ago, anybody can shoot a great film or documentary with very low camera budget. I don't necessarily agree all the time with Mattias but he has a point. All these endless topics about motion cadence, compression, bits, curve X and Y are a bit boring nowadays especially when there is very little actual movie making and demo real going on.

    Ahh I can enjoy pretty much any live music from country bumpkins to metal heads. I really liked that Foghorn stringband gig I posted the video of (it was a new experience for me but they are really very good). I also have a video I would love to post I took of a duo called Semen and Garfuckel of a song I think Is called "functional fuckwit" but not sure I can. I very rarely have to be listening to something else while shooting a band. I just bought an old NEX camera so I can shoot a International Blues music day gig next month I have been asked to do. Multi day, multi band Jazz festivals can sometimes throw up some "interesting" takes on jazz tunes (I can hear the same song played by three bands and one will be great, one will be just ok and the other will be like finger nails down a chalk board).

  22. Yea they have already stated it will "be around $4k," so it won't be any more than that. I would guess $3800 or $3900. It pretty much has to have: 6K (confirmed), All-I (confirmed), external raw (up to 6k) hopefully in BM Raw or ProRes Raw, and maybe even internal raw. And then maybe something special like super low ISO in video V-Log (50-100), internal NDs, and 120fps in 4K. We'll see and I'm sure they'll pack it full of features considering the S1 with firmware update is already pushing into $6k - $10k image quality territory.

  23. Those specs are pretty amazing, 14 bit and 36fps on the 30mp, 120fps or more at ~4k resolutions and 300fps at ~HD resolutions - in 14 bit mode. The stacked 48mp looks amazing too. Sadly we'll never see anything near those capabilities in an actual camera from Sony. 10fps and 8-bit 4:2:0 - no soup for you!

    No, they're going to add internal CDNG PLAYBACK not recording. No chance of 4K/120p in my opinion. I see it does 25/30p in H.264 4K mode... So they definitely need to get 24p and 25p working in Cinema DNG. Hope Sigma is listening to us and not to idiots.

    one music video that i thought was creative visually and an interesting song musically in itself is another song i like is i kinda like the juxtaposition of a woman onscreen and a man voice singing. plus the acting fits the song i think. the brunette is kinda cute which sells it for me lol But the eighties definitely had some cool things happening musically another dude i think is pretty interesting musically is this bloke, i dont want to take anything away from tommy or phil emmanual or Mark Knopfler but i think you have to be pretty switched on to play like this.

What for BTW?! Truth should universally be at the ship's command column, this doesn't rule out a diversity of angles over the same subject in respect of fairness though. B&W portraits can variably shine but only in 100% under required circumstances ; ) The idea 'who's not with me is against me' is proper of a totalitarian mindset, not suitable to any healthy discussion and progress. Nothing valid comes from facts distortion. From egos either. Let alone ad hominem attacks! Perspective is always useful and welcome, I always want and tend to believe : -) That said, to ignore or undervalue this capture device (my fav cam ever as so many times written) is absolutely unfair.     I have had a LOT of prime lenses in the range 85-150 as well as many old zooms. I would strongly suggest you save jut a little for a more recent lens in that range (some of them are getting old too but will hold up for year to come). Something like a Canon EF 85 1.8 or EF 100 f2 (I have not had the 85 but loved the EF 100). The 100 can be found for a couple of hundred dollars and I well worth it and Is not huge. I was spoilt by the Sony FE 85 1.8 which is about the biggest bargain going in photography (though still not dirt cheap) as it Is relatively small and light while being as good as many more expensive lenses. The EF 85 1.8 still seems quite good though and there is a Chinese knock off that is even cheaper (there is one for the 100 f2 as well. I also loved the EF 135 f2 L but that is a bit larger and heavier (but a very nice lens if you can afford it. I do still have a FD 85 1.2 L and that IS pretty heavy and large (for an 85) as well as being a bit expensive still (has come down in price a bit in the last few years now that there are many more 85s available in many mounts and even the MF Mitakon 1.2's. I had to sell the EF 135 f2 L and EF 100 f2 and FE 85 1.8 (wish I hadn't) but I do not have a camera to use them on now. I have kept a sigma 150 2.8 APO macro that I had at the same time as the 135 and when deciding which to keep, I thought the Sigma was a bit more versatile while being as good (an ok middle distance tele, a great portrait lens and an excellent macro lens). I have had an old Nikon 85 1.8 and an old Minolta 85 1.7 and they were not bad, just not as good as many more modern lenses. I hardly use the old FD 85 1.2 L (it does need a fix due to dissolved bearings though works for now) and I have an ancient Promura 135 1.8 I almost never use as the more modern lenses are so much better. I think I will get an older Sony E mount APSC camera this week to use with some of my remaining lenses but I also will not have any focal reducers for a while and my 85 "needs" will be met by using a Sony Zeiss 55 1.8 on APSC....Maybe look for some shorter lenses without a focal reducer? Will till be quite fast (I usually use 85s stopped down a bit no matter how good they are wide open with just a few uses wide open). My kit has pretty much stabilised now and will be 17mm tilt shift lens (EF), 24 1.4 (FD), 20-35 2.8 (EF), 55 1.8 (FE), 85 1.2 (FD), 150 2.8 (EF), 300 2.8 (adaptall) with a few other odd and ends but I will need to add a couple of focal reducers. These are from the Sigma 150 2.8 on an old Canon 450D 1.6x crop sensor camera.

  41. Well maybe even Arri has something to do with it? Red, Arri have been doing Raw for a long time now. To work over HDMI this has too be compressed to hell and back. So it is probably that reason patent wise they may be having trouble. Or maybe they are pulling a bRaw thing and having trouble with BMD patents?? Crazy world lol.

If it is true you are not connected with the brand, you say, nothing more can be inferred from there in any way other than truly suspicious and unveiled content from your keyboard. How you know "Grant, JB, and Hook probably don't monitor this site anymore" as for instance? What for also those other words in your posting before so revealing? How can you surely be so certain of all that? Speaking about personal aspects of people doesn't show any distance from that environment, on the contrary. As matter of fact, we early P4K adopters are very happy with the purchase. With or another quirk is not enough to put a shame on the whole thing. Need to have perspective. B&W is to reduce the reality and only coming from a disastrous marketing and communication as several people here have quoted. For some reason some people pop up on here very nervous! LOL ; ) We even have the chance of cDNG. Pity the newcomers are unable to have it in any way other than looking for the previous units. Sad to see.

  45. Hi Mattias, Just a few discoveries (that might or might not have a bearing on folks' evaluations) based on my watching your test on both a non-retina 27" iMac and an iPhone 8-Plus. The color rendition on the older iMac yielded a less color-saturated viewing experience than the iPhone's True Tone retina screen. Also, using Safari on the iPhone defaults to 360P and needs to be overridden in the playback settings to the max-available 720P for that combo, interestingly viewing on the the iMac via Firefox allows for 1080P resolution. Thanks for taking the time to put together this exercise, I've been having some fun since last night giving each camera sequence a going-over as a personal observation-test and learning experience. I much appreciate your patience in not revealing the answers quite yet as I'd be a bit miffed at missing out on the chance to thoroughly embarrass myself here on the forum with my forthcoming take on the matters... First off, can I say upfront that none of the clips wowed me IQ-wise on the lakeside sequences?! I'll get to that shortly... Two things that stood out to me immediately (and could have been separate tests in their own right) were, 1. for the dog sequence, "why one should never shoot their pet at point blank distance with a wide-open fast lens indoors for the sake of exposure" and, 2. for the shoreline sequence, "can anyone determine the actual colors of that canoe?" Ha! For aesthetic points only, 1. in that most of the dog's face is in focus due to a proper depth-of-field/aperture choice appropriate for the subject matter, goes to B, C, D, J and K...(L is actually focused on your pet's nose! LOL) and, 2. having not seen the original footage myself it's hard to determine whether youtube's compression is adversely affecting (read: compounding) the original compression for each sequence. Phew, having gotten all that out of the way, my IQ assessments (based on your "go by feel" criteria)... For the Dog sequence I found I was favoring the warmer renditions that showed overall deeper face focus with K being tops followed by C or G. (FWIW, A is lacking vital detail to my eyes, B would have been a contender except for the cold rendition, C would have been a finalist except for the DOF selection, D is showing too much in-camera sharpening, E might have won if the lens DOF was more subject appropriate and its color flatness seems workable for post, F had color overkill for my tastes and the DOF too shallow, H failed on colors being too rich for my tastes, I's DOF way too shallow for pet photography/videography, oofah, J has overdone detail and way too cold for these eyes, L has some nice detail, too bad about the nose focusing and shallow DOF.) For the lakeside sequence, none of the above...really. Just looking at the wooden planks atop the floating/bobbing dive platform reveal obvious codec breakdown across the different sequences (some handling it much worse than others...>cough< A, B, E, G, H, J) while viewing at 1080P, something that my eyes just couldn't ignore so I wasn't "feeling" any of them. Color-wise the three major fails to me were B, H and J for trying too hard to look like film emulsions. F is a blurry mess. B, D, F and I all lacking vital detail, conversely G and J being too crunchy with detail. C, D, F, G, H, and J all being too contrasty for my tastes or uses. And frankly (as mentioned) the colors on the canoe are all over the map and I dare anyone (with the exception of the OP) to know what its true colors to be! Ha! That I'd have to choose, then E for detail and shadow retention (giving me the impression that I might be able to do something with it), followed by L for seeming detail retention, and I for its codec (wood dock test) seemingly surviving YT compression. Anyhoo, them's my votes! :)

  47. I told you. It really puzzles me. Why? We'd need they may address the issue. It's rather disappointing. Without mention to lack some objectiveness to clarify it. I also can't be glad why a few models are cDNG capable, others don't. As far as reported because of a new display and its firmware, but this camera was announced with the possibility to hold cDNG when it is not even consensual braw is wide accepted as raw format. Despite its usefulness, ratio IQ and value. So we have now two distinct cameras as matter of fact? A Mark II or better to call it Minus Mark I too...? Is this acceptable? Ethical? Many fair doubts and complaints by customers and adopters can be raised for the subject matter. Who can blame such claim?   48. I understand your point and tend to concur. I just didn't do any test. And I found worrying some other people to involve cDNG too. Without mention, I am not a frequent user of BMD forums so I am not certain some other people hadn't noticed yet.
