V-LOG colors looking good. Youtube-compression makes it hard to judge the codec though.

  2. I recorded all 3 at different exposure levels, the ones you can see were the optimum exposures for DR. The 5DMk3 CDNG raw format gives it the edge in the grade. Have you tried dragging and dropping the images? Not bad considering the MK3 is 1080p and the other two are 4K. One of the things I don't like about the X-T3 is it loses chroma in the shadows, that's something the 5D has always handled better than every other camera I've tested over the years. I recently filmed 3 jobs exclusively with the 5D over 3 weeks with a nightly build; it only crashed once, and I only lost one frame. The 5D upscales to 4K nicely. We should be doing this in my comparison thread. My bad.

    S1 Anyone?

One thing that made me crazy is this stupid app from panasonic to transfer foto.when a wifi router is near, they connect to it and lose connection to the camera.last weeding i want transfer some screengrabs from video to but it on insta, but it was impossibile because this problem ? The AF works ok, if only 1 person is in scene, but with multiple is very jumpy.i have tested standard settings and extended.Second seems to react faster but with more pumping. So i use 90% MF with peaking. I think one of the best, on par with Atomos recorders. The size and weight for me are optimal, you can handheld it with a focus loop and you have a tripod style experience

    S1 Anyone?

This dude on Youtube released some files for download showing the standard S1 profile vs the new v-log 10-bit: Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUWr1dJ6Gr8 Download here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tbeah6el1et55yo/AABBQs0-OL_THPUekwm6sWRba?dl=0 I had a quick go at the files, the v-log is definitely saving some blown out highlights in the sky over the standard profile, top is standard, bottom is my grade of V-Log:

  5. Hey Kaylee! I will speak for myself but also speak for my friends who are all in this YouTube creator space making a full time living. I have a channel called Kinotika and I am a full time YouTuber. I went full time about a year and a half ago and we have over 60,000 subscribers...on track to hit 100,000 next year hopefully. First off...the money I make off ad revenue from Google is nothing. I’ll just say it to you....We make on average $1,000 a month off ad rev. That is by no means enough to live off of. On the months where we have had viral videos where we get close to a million views that month, we make $3,000 roughly that month. Even on our BEST months....$3,000 just isn’t enough money per month to live off of for me and my wife and kids. Thats where affiliate marketing comes in. I make sometimes double money or sometimes more off affiliate compared to ad rev...and it is continuing to grow. (I still haven’t even enabled international amazon...so I am only dealing with the USA) On top of affiliate, once we hit about 50,000 subscribers...agents started reaching out to me to represent us. I now have two agents working for me that get brand deals. Have you ever seen a video where they say “ This video brought to you by _____”? That is a brand deal. I get paid often $1,000 or more just to do one ad read. I make four videos a month and if I can get a brand to sponsor every video on my channel...we have some serious cash. Moral of the story is: CREATE AN AUDIENCE OF PEOPLE WHO CARE FIRST. Don’t worry about the money from Ad Rev or even affiliates. The biggest YouTube channels out there make the majority of their money from brand deals. The biggest creators I know for a fact will charge $20,000 and up just for an ad read. You aren’t going to make any money for at least a year or more. It took me about a year of uploading two videos a week every week talking about camera gear before I started making anything substantial. Making an “ENTERTAINMENT” channel is even harder than what I have done because it is difficult to monetize that. You have to gather a large following and then you will get calls from brands who want to pay you to sponsor your content. With what I do...people are already searching for the things I am talking about because I talk about new camera gear every day so it has a high searchability and discoverability rate. Watch channels like Derral Eves, Think Media, Video Creators, etc. They have tons and tons of videos teaching you how to get started. Moral of the story is...make videos that make you happy first. Just have fun. Make stuff you are good at. Don’t try to conform to what you THINK other people want to see. It has taken me a long time to accept the fact that I am naturally good at talking about camera gear and apple tech....that’s about it. Anyways....hope this helps.

  6. These blotches exist in both ProRes and Braw footage from the camera and are caused by its internal noise reduction - which cannot be applied to cDNG which is therefore not affected. I really hope BMD adds a setting allowing spatial noise filtering to be turned off. In this example the grain would become smaller at least and less blocky. The X-T3 uses strong temporal noise filtering which causes all kinds of other problems such as ghosting and smearing - which is quite a big issue on other cameras as well - such as the A73 and E2 and even GoPros. But in images with no movement it does wonders indeed... The 5D MKIII has a way bigger sensor with large pixels which is the reason it looks as clean.

  7. No problem, it is your forum. I show to you my personal apologies then. This is your home. I firmly believe we should all respect each other, the truth and the home of each other too. Not to him, anyways. I am done with this guy. There's no personal agenda over here, mine or from him, I believe or I'd already have invited him to go on private mode. He pops here to downvote any negative remark he doesn't like towards his product because of his work too committed with results we would all love to see opposed. He did the same with Dennis (aka @deezid) to intoxicating reality distorting the facts to unfit his personal bubble. Embarrassing his remarks trying to put them to rest instead. In a line, good try to silence them with variable success but without adding any helpful enlightenment to whom has invested resources on that table. Moreover, denying reality can only address readers and customers/users to misleading. On the compilation thread organized for a few weeks now, we can even salute this year-long thread with a million views as you well know I've just recently addressed to you. And emailed to Grant Petty BTW (forwarded to you too). Your milestone. On a product manufactured by the same guys who I am client for years but have underestimated your forum as most part of us well know. Without mention, as you and everyone here should remind against my voice, as well. I tend to put it where and when I think it is fair. Brand agnostic locations are really not well seen under a strict business viewpoint. Ours here, your readers and contributors, is a different one, though. However, 414 pages (!) can never help anyone to find the best information. I could only leave it as my personal bookmarks saved in a device of my own. Or share it with this community. In a way to easily have quick access to it in the most effective and helpful method by all. I am not inventing anything. Not lies spread with undercover little mouse clicks. LOL Just compiling relevant information crucial to any Blackmagic daily user. They are not "my threads"... This is only a small contribution of mine in your forum. Our threads as you wish then ; ) In behalf of this community you've helped to created. Something you know I respect. As much as the fact you put your keyboard where you see to fit. One of the reasons I am here. The same when some move comes useful. Please don't expect something different from reason or who I am : -) EDIT -- Above-posted on my remark and quote of mine up there, I stand corrected, it is "such useful piece of technology" and not "such useful people of technology", obviously.

  9. Emanuel, you are over stepping the mark a bit here, to be honest. I don't want you harassing actual Blackmagic Design staff on my forum. Also when it comes to creating "official topics" and such like compilations of Blackmagic stuff you are stepping on my toes as moderator... Don't do it. I'd like us to keep the Blackmagic 4K Pocket Cinema Camera in one thread for now and there is no need to start reposting and cutting and pasting content into your own threads.

  10. Some really good info here. I watch a lot of YT and especially higher production channels, and at some point they all make a "how I succeeded at YT" video, and the story is always the same. Putting my business consultant hat on, I'd suggest you look at it like a sales pipeline: First step is to convert people that have no idea you exist into people that do know you exist. This is about having a video of yours appear somewhere on the screen. This depends on the mighty algorithm. Second step is to convert people who have seen you exist but haven't watched one of your videos into people that have watched one of your videos. This is about thumbnail and titles. This is where clickbait will help you. Third is to keep people watching your video for as long as possible. The first 'trick' is to hook the viewer in the first few seconds. Studies have been done about how kids can tell if something is authentic or not in something like 7 seconds, so basically you have to be interesting, and you can't fake it. The old trick of showing a clip from the peak of the third act and then "72 hours earlier" can work, but basically lead with the most awesome bit until peoples itchy clicks fingers move away from the "Next" button. This is where clickbait will hurt you - if you promise something in the title and then don't deliver then people will click away. This is why the Casey Neistat videos where he has big news (like the "I'm leaving NYC forever" video) the first thing he says is "Hi... It's not clickbait". The fourth is to get people to interact with your video. More engagement means you come out higher in the mighty algorithm. Likes and comments are great for your video and your channel. The fifth is to get people to watch more videos. This is where the end screen comes in with the "watch more of my videos" comes in, as well as people putting in links in the top-right when they mention things. The sixth is to get people to subscribe. Subscribers are more likely to see the next video you make. That's fancy words for things we already know..... Clickbait titles and thumbnails, keep people engaged, link to other videos, then the almighty "like, comment, subscribe" commandment. Then it's "post often". Then it's monetise. They also talk about balancing regular content with findable content. This is why people vlog and mix in product reviews. If their channel was only product reviews then they'd get hits but less subscribers, and if they only did normal vlog or whatever videos then not many people would find their content. So doing collaborations and reviews and other searchable content is how to find new viewers, and regularly making good content makes those people stick around. A good example is Sara Deitchy who famously got famous by making a parody of Casey Neistat. He did what everyone did, heard about the video, watched it, enjoyed it, but before sharing it he looked at the rest of her channel and saw that she'd made documentary-series and other real high-quality content and only then decided she was worth recommending. It's like threading the needle, you have to do everything right, however, I think that there's ample room on the platform. I was watching YT daily around 2005 and there were a group of YT peeps who got all the views and were all referencing each other, they're all gone, without exception. I suspect that most of the top ranking people from even 2010 or 2015 are probably mostly replaced as well. This is likely the algorithm changing over time, but it means that everyone famous now was new then, so opportunities exist. Oh, and everyone says you have to grind for years before your channel will take off, and even then, no guarantees.

  13. Last year my main channel made about 60k USD. No YouTube ads, strictly affiliate pay from having viewers click a link to my site and then from there visit a merchant like Amazon, Walmart, etc. Here’s my deepdive answer: I make product reviews in low competition niches. The videos have ridiculously high production value and tend to outrank any competitors for ~2-3 years on search and autoplay list. So on average I make about 4K a month, but that doubles or more around November and December. This year revenue is down as my older videos lose rank and I’ve been slowing down on producing more content. I could wind up making half of what I did last year if I don’t start uploading more videos. Today I build sets and furnish them using free stuff I get from kijiji or craiglist. I made modular flats with double sided walls (tile one side, wallpaper other side) and can build a room with windows and a door. I have props for a kitchen, bathroom, office and workbench. I can also kinda make a living room. I currently use an FS5.2 and A6500 with Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 glass. I use a 5-axis Kessler Crane Second Shooter for camera control. Lighting is mostly from Aputure: C120Ds, LS1Ss. I also have a number of Quasar tubes with Kino housings. I shoot 4K raw at either 30 or 120fps and upload 4K30. Edit using DaVinci. Motion graphics are done on After Effects. Sound and VOs are captured on a Blue Yeti with me covering myself with a heavy blanket while sitting on a super thick carpet. Voiceovers are heavily processed in Audition. I wrote all the code for the website myself. The only expense is paying for the domain name. Each niche subdomain is hosted on a Google App Engine project which reduces my overall traffic and allows me to squeak by on the fee tier. YouTube is used for the video hosting. The web scrapping is done on a free tier Google Compute Engine project. I use Sikuli to grab prices from websites I don’t have API access to and google search cache as a backup. Google Sheets is used as a GUI for the database, which a python script accesses to generate a flatfile DB and then is uploaded to the appropriate GAE project every 24 hours. Long story short, I don’t use Wordpress with plugins. I use Google servers with custom code to have a lighting fast website, so people are more likely to use the website and click my affiliate links. WAY TOO MUCH INFO RIGHT? But more importantly: Is this a viable route for you to make money on YouTube? Sure, I guess. At this point 7ish years in, I’m bored of making these videos. It took probably 4 years to turn a profit with my most recent gear purchases. I’ve spent a lot on equipment to keep my interest. Lately it’s way too much fucking work. It was nice proving this could work but I work a full time job that pays me way more money. There’s no way for me to replace myself and earn a revenue as whoever I teach will inevitably just strike it out on their own. I tried to help my last GF to make her own content: makeup, handbags, etc... big mistake. I don’t recommend mixing work with friends.

  15. HDV 1080 was about 25Mbit/s. Cameras like the Canon HV20/30 would still be relatively interesting as a really bargain basement option if they included one of the 35mm adapters with them. CCD mojo That Fisher Price camera that I posted above above actually records to cassette. As in audio cassette. So its less a case of a bit rate and more a case of a bit shit.

Or maybe we shouldn’t post anything we make unless it’s as good as [insert your favorite cinematographer] (because we don’t all agree on that either). Not defending his work (I’ve posted as shitty stuff as well) just kinda disappointed in the attitudes.

  22. "I doubt Cinema DNG by itself was the legal issue, but maybe the combination of Cinema DNG technology and the camera processing for it infringed one of RED’s patents" since then blackmagic also updated the ursa mini g2 firmware and cinema dng was not removed in the g2 so this legal issue seems to be pure BS. they most likely removed if from the cheap bmpcc4k either to harmonize their cinema camera line in terms of specs/price ratio or they want to push usage of BRAW over cinema dng. why can't they just give the real explanation so we can have an idea of their strategy and make informed choices in term of what software to learn or what camera to buy.

  24. While it doesn't have the flares and ovals bokeh, IMO, video shot with the GFX-100 looks anamorphic. It's sharp edge to edge... clean. Almost like a modern anamorphic. Yet has an aesthetic that smaller sensor are missing. This must be to do with the "medium" format look. I feel it looks quite cinematic. What are your thoughts?
    1 point
  25. Ha, yes. I looked into trying to replicate the overall feel of the Kodak CCD in the Digital Bolex or the big-ass Sony CCD in the F35 I looked for weeks and couldn't do it. The old compacts are really terrible for video The CCDs in them did line-skipped 720p at best with the worse codecs known to man. Barley good enough for Facebook! None of them have the CCD look from the cinema cameras like the D16, they all have the Crap Crap Digital look. If you can fine one consumer CCD camera from the past that actually looks cinematic, I'll eat my forum, and you'll win this challenge.

  26. The viable options for improving performance in Resolve from cheapest to most expensive are pretty much: 1) Get an eGPU 2) Get a desktop computer (Might be more expensive than option 3 if you get the cheese grater) 3) Get a new laptop (15" MacBook Pro if Apple) Option 1) is cheapest and most portable, so it's definitely a sane choice even if it might not give the highest performance. The other options will be at least twice as expensive (and 4 times as expensive if you stay with apple). If an 570/580 is good enough, then go for it. The question is whether or not it's good enough. When it comes to computers, it's better to buy cheaper for what you need today than to buy expensive in anticipation for what the future might look like.
    1 point
  27. there's been some great advice from you guys especially andrgl your insight is quite enlightening. The one thing that ticks me off is the like and subscribe moment in pretty much every video. I know there's been fair amount of time spent making and uploading a video and we all know everyone is after every like and subscribe they can get, but asking people to like or subscribe comes across as needy or desperate or even tacky at times, to me anyway. If you can come across as not being needy you'll do alright i think. When you make the video of washing the pup try to catch him shaking all that water off in glorious slow motion then mix it up a bit with a segment of some kind like howto clip a dogs toenails properly something like that. like others have said give people some great footage of fido running through the forest when you get him home twist it to what ever brush you use to clean him up and flog it or link to it maybe even try approaching the brush manufacturers. Hmm i think i can see a pup in my future ?

    It's eGPU time!

An iPad Pro is not expensive on it's own, but it will cost Kye double what an eGPU costs and is much more limiting at the same time. Not only that, but we already know how much of a performance gain there is to be had with him using an eGPU with Resolve. The iPad Pro however is unknown to him, doesn't run Resolve and if he doesn't like the experience, he then has to sell it and buy another laptop. This is tedious, un-necissary, expensive and for unknown gains (if any) to him. Yes, GPU's and CPU's date quickly, you said it yourself! So why an iPad pro which is not upgradable? An eGPU is upgradable. I can't keep up with the contradictions you make. iPad Pro, 5G, cloud editing....all great in a few years but not now. Kye, can you wait a few years? And for the sake of this discussion, maybe you and Emanual can start a 5G cloud thread?

I have the latest iPad Pro. I think I know a lot more about it than you do. I think you are clueless. Cloud editing is going to be the next big thing. Is it good now, no, will it be, yes with enough Bandwidth. And there is not many Benchmarks for Editing GPU's, CPU's because the average person could NEVER afford one. You are talking 50 thousand Dollar outfits. 10 thousand dollar Monitors. 200 thousand dollar consoles. 100 thousand dollar Raid systems. Crazy stuff. If it wasn't for gamers you could Never afford a decent GPU. They are what drive the market. It isn't Bob down the street that drives anything computer wise. 99% of the people in the world are totally clueless about computers.

  33. Yes, in most cases you should upload weekly or even more often. But there are lots of popular channels which upload less often. For instance one of my favourite channels is "Strange Parts" and they often go a few weeks without an upload. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO8DQrSp5yEP937qNqTooOw/videos But when you think about the work which goes into their videos, it is a mad amount, heaps of effort and time goes into it! For my own channel, I try to aim for weekly ish, but reality/work/life often interferes and weeks might go by without an upload. (but also, sometimes I might do multiple uploads in one week. Or even in one day, my max was 3 uploads in one day) Anyway, you can completely ignore what I do/don't do, as I don't make a dime at all from YouTube (that isn't the reason why I do it anyway). This. THIS. Is a big reason why I'd recommend never putting all your eggs into the one basket which is YouTube, you never know if one morning and you'll wake up to find out Google has completely fvcked your channel! (could be a nuclear case where your channel is deleted, or just simply a lot of your videos have been delisted, or maybe your rankings have dropped massively to the point you might as well not exist, or any of a million other ways they might screw you over)

    Lenses

A couple shots from the Canon FD 50mm 1.2 L that I had modified to EF mount. The more I use the lens, the more I like it. I’m still flying blind with my MacBook Air. I am pretty set with lenses, so now I need to decide on a monitor/computer. Since these are all color tests just to look at the footage, I have time to make a decision before editing begins. I looked at some of my previous frames on my friend’s phone and they had a greenish tint that I’m not seeing on my computer and phone... I haven’t checked these, but I assume they aren’t exactly what I’m seeing... ugh.

  40. There is/was an ML version for EOSM firmware 2.0.3. ML developer Daniel Fort has a 2.0.3 ML version from January 2017 on his bitbucket download page (scroll down to "magiclantern-Nightly.2017Jan13.EOSM203.zip"), Always make sure that your camera battery is fully charged before you attempt to install Magic Lantern. If you would like to downgrade your EOSM firmware to 2.0.2, and then install the latest builds for 2.0.2, here is Daniel Fort's tutorial on how to downgrade Canon firmware. It is fairly easy, once you have the firmware (.fir) file -- just reflash the firmware the same way you would flash ML (except the SD card should not have the "boot flag" enabled). Always make sure that your camera battery is fully charged before you attempt a firmware update. Canon doesn't seem to have the EOSM 2.0.2 firmware posted for download, but here is the link that Daniel Fort gives for most Canon firmware (scroll to the bottom of this page to find the firmware links). The EOSM 2.0.2 firmware can also be found on this non-Canon page. Scroll down to the firmware download link for "eosm-v202-win.zip" near the bottom of the page (it's not the "ksd291a_installer.zip" download link near the top of the page). Windows (nor any other particular OS) is not required, once you have extracted the firmware from the zip file. In Fort's firmware downgrade tutorial, he seems to suggest that it is very unlikely that someone would/could tamper with compressed Canon firmware files (.fir)

  42. The short answer is it depends. I have a sleeper channel that is all private at the moment that I want to expand in the future. Life right now is really busy, so I’m not ready to commit. But here are my two cents (worth probably 1.4 cents adjust for inflation). Animal videos can get a lot of views if they are super cute and you target your videos to kids. Eventually a few will go viral and you’ll get the views. Your subscriber count will most likely be way lower than your views. For example your videos might have 100K views but your channel only has 5K subscribers. I have a niece and twin nephews and the crap they watch on YouTube is astounding. Weird shit. Silly shit. Lots of cute animals doing human things. They shouldn’t be watching but that’s a whole other topic. The other type of channel is you invest in building subscribers. It takes longer, usually, but this is where brand deals and sponsors come in to play. The stronger more loyal your subscribers the more leverage you have with making deals or being noticed. These are the Peter McKinnons, that kid that reviews toys, etc... The ad revenue is now modest to weak. You either have to really rack up monthly views (I’m talking millions) or use the channel as a way to market stuff to your audience (buy that merch). Good luck. Having big dogs is always a draw to people. They are either researching the breed and want to see real life examples or they are kids that want to see animals so silly things.

  43. So, my brother has a channel of his kid playing the ABC's game. The little guy is obsessed with the alphabet and he's a charming good natured kid. So, bro started making videos with his son everytime the little guy wanted to play with his letters. At the end of a year they had made about 150 vids. Somehow the YT algorithm, or an influencer, smiled on their little channel and overnight their subscription rate went from 25 people to 75K; still growing. He turned on the monetize option and just received a check this month for $2K. My bro is a blue collar dude and scrapes by. This is like hitting the lottery a little bit. He puts in the work, sure, but he and his son both love it and they're getting paid for it now. He's making more videos than I do. And, if I'm being honest, they're more engaging than the dry corporate shit I usually do for pay. And, with the extra income he can actually pay a few bills on time for a change. OTOH, I'm an old creative and working under the traditional distribution model of filmmaking. My wife and I have tanked about 35K of our own cash into our latest documentary and we've made, maybe, 5K of that back. So, brave new world, y'all.

  44. Ads don't generate much income, even for the professional YTs, which is why they do sponsored videos themselves, essentially running ads within their "show". The goal is to attract many viewers and retain many viewers. IIRC the algorithm doesn't like it if people only watch a bit of your video then click away to the next one. This is why controversy, spectacle and drama are so prevalent on the platform, creating a steady stream of engaging videos is really fricking hard!

I did a test with the P4K Braw, X-T3 HEVC 10bit, and 5DMk3 magic lantern 14bit lossless, graded in Resolve and exported to ProRes4444, only the P4K shot has the macroblocking in both 3:1 and Q0 at varying exposure levels. It may not look so bad on a 27" screen, but I wouldn't want to risk it on a 40 foot screen. These are screenshots taken from the ProRes4444 file. Pocket 4K X-T3 5DMk3

  47. Focus pullers should not be worried. I mean there are tons of creative decisions that you can do with a focus puller, that you couldnt do with DPAF. Allthough If you are doing a following shot or something DPAF seems to work better and a lot cheaper and faster too. So it depends on the situation, or what you are trying to achieve.

    S1 Anyone?

Here is an S1 frame grab with my beloved contax Zeiss 50mm 1.7, this was shot in HLG and hasn't been graded at all, just pulled from rec2020 back into rec709. I think the color and dynamic range speaks for itself:
