    Davinci Resolve 16

As they say in the classics: Thank you my issue has been solved,.... ? Thanks to guys from BM forums (Peter Cave, to be exact) I learnt that the timeline resolution only dictates at what resolution stills will be exported, BUT to get top-end freeze frames one needs to match the timeline resolution to the source clips resolution AT THE TIME OF GRABBING the stills. I was editing and color grading in 1080p, so that my PC won't have a hard time. After doing that, I changed timeline res to UHD only to export some of the images. Turns out that's why I was getting the issue.

  7. It begins. Evaluating new cameras isn't my favorite thing, so I thought I'd share the pain. I've got a lot of work on ATM, so this will be an ongoing project. I might even end up making a youtube vid ?. I've been shooting with the 5DMk3 ML raw exclusively for many years, you can check out some of my recent work here: A few contenders have come along over the years like the A7s and BMMCC, but all have failed to measure up to the 5DMk3 with Magic Lantern raw. These jobs I did recently were particularly gruelling, up to 19 hour days, days on end, uncontrollable lighting, no recce, no crew, constantly on the move, a great stress test for any camera or operator. The weaknesses of the 5D have never been more apparent. With a slight lull in the storm, and some technical hurdles in upcoming work, I took the plunge and bought these two sought after bodies. Not being able to get a Pocket 4K for like 8 months allows a lot of time to pixel peep and contemplate the future. Pixel peeping is one thing, but you really don't know if it's for you until you test it for yourself, or wait for a crash test dummy like me to do the work for you. Very early impressions: I have to say that of the 2 cameras, I was more excited about the arrival of the Pocket 4K, at least until I remembered the lens adapters I ordered haven't arrived yet. I rummaged through one of my four film detritus drawers and found 5, yes 5 ? Nex adapters (remnants from a brief Sony affair) but not a single M4/3 adapter of course. So I unboxed the P4K, grabbed one of my Canon batteries, and fired up the little beast. The fan: super quiet, probably the quietest fan I've ever heard, a non issue. The firmware: 6.2.1, no CDNG for me. For those who haven't heard: BMD have put a new touchscreen in the latest cameras that only works with 6.2.1 firmware. I'm not really fussed, the Braw stuff I've seen looks really good, and the file sizes are amazing, 4K Braw files are smaller than 5DMk3 raw 1080p files. UHD 12:1 Braw files are roughly the same size as 1080p ProRes HQ files, and 200Mbit/s 1080p X-T3 HEVC files. I've had the X-T3 for a couple of days and I got an 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS lens with it. This lens is fantastic, creamy bokeh, and the OIS is amazing, I can get super steady shots at the long end handheld, I know I'm very late to the party with OIS, but wow. Can't wait to put an Iscorama anamorphic on this puppy, no 58-52mm step down rings in the detritus drawers either ?. Low light on the X-T3 is a mixed bag: up to 8000 ISO the noise is tolerable, film-like chroma grain, no fixed pattern noise, however: the X-T3 image falls apart in the shadows, that's a big minus. The other image related issue that comes to mind is: white balance. I had to go digging into the detritus drawer for a grey card! I mean srsly, what's the world coming to? I haven't used a grey card in years; I'm so accustomed to shooting raw I just don't even think about white balancing anymore. I haven't drawn any conclusions on custom white balancing yet other than it's absolutely necessary with the X-T3 ?. Ergonomics: the X-T3 is terrible in big hands, I rarely handhold a camera, rolling shutter micro jitters are a thing, but the OIS lens makes it doable. The Smallrig cage has a handgrip extension, so that may help. The P4K is much better in the hand. Stay tuned.

  10. I sometimes like to say that "AF for video hasn't been invented yet". And I'm only half kidding. The camera will never know where I want the focus. And like already mentioned, on big shoots you can have a focus puller, so AF in an Arri is probably not high on the priorities. Loosley on the topic, found this a bit interesting to watch.

Its a pity it doesn't do picture profile versions as well as RAW but the Dpreview test scene shows even in RAW there will be work https://***URL removed***/reviews/image-comparison?attr18=daylight&attr13_0=sony_a7sii&attr13_1=fujifilm_xt3&attr13_2=apple_iphonex&attr13_3=apple_iphonex&attr15_0=jpeg&attr15_1=jpeg&attr15_2=jpeg&attr15_3=jpeg&attr16_0=100&attr16_1=160&attr16_2=32&attr16_3=32&normalization=full&widget=1&x=-0.0523171817243824&y=0.6944350801054903

  13. After some of the discussion about Cloud storage in this thread and concerns over increasing costs, I laughed this morning when I got an email from Dropbox telling me that their price is in increasing by $20 a year. Granted they doubled the space from 1TB to 2TB, but still.

  16. Not me doing it, all I know is he has rented something for it. BMD ATEM was my first guess! And I asked him already, all I know is that it is not that. (he wasn't too sure himself what it was? We'll find out soon tomorrow!)

  17. I don't really use video AF unless its a very specific occasion. And my main work camera is a Canon with DPAF, which is as good as it gets, specially in continuous. With that said, the push AF feature on the BMPCC4K coupled with a native m4/3 lens should not be swept under the rug. It is very usable and quite quick. (No continues worth mentioning though.)
    1 point
  18. What are they switching it with? Blackmagic ATEMs have a pretty comprehensive live colour corrector built in. A neutral standard colour profile and manual white balance off a card as a starting point obviously !
    1 point
  19. The headroom is smaller, the X-T3 can't write this card at full speed. It's somewhere between 60-70 MB/s, but it's still enough. It all depends on the actual body, afaik the GH5 can't even write at 50 MB/s to this card.
    1 point
  20. Yeah it's the 95MB/s write card. Interestingly, Sandisk lowered the specified write speed on the 170MB/s read cards to 90MB/s write. 400Mbits/s write is only 50/MB/s so both cards have plenty of headroom. The faster read speed will be welcome ?

The A7riii and A7iii have had their updates since the A9 firmware update. Aurofocus is improved but it doesnt include the same object tracking as the A9. (I think there are processor constraints.)

  25. If you consider the BMPCC4K a cinema camera (which you should) then you'll understand how a cinema camera can put pressure on DSLR/MILC cameras. You only have to look at what impact the BMPCC4K had on people shooting with other cinema cameras (eg, lower-end REDs) to know that the more cinema cameras that come out challenging the specs-vs-price equation like the ZCam, Kinefinity, BM, etc the more pressure it puts on the big cinema names like RED and ARRI, but also those manufacturers who span the two worlds like Sony, Canon, etc. It's all connected. Sometimes loosely connected, but connected just the same.

    Davinci Resolve 16

@kye very important! All i mean is if you use software that is labelled as incomplete, you have no right to complain about bugs, either report then to the devs or wait for the actual release. (Of course discussing bugs and crashes with the community is valuable as well, i just get annoyed with people smugly saying the resolve beta isn't ready for production use... Of course it isn't)

I'm editing the video for my 5 week honeymoon trip in Italy - does that count as important? ??? Seriously though, I've had less crashes on 16 than I used to get on v12.5 per hour. I'm not even kidding. I am doing backups each time I get a new beta though.

  28. https://www.dropbox.com/s/spm7er1jjz32gyu/5DtoRGB Lite.zip?dl=0 Hope this works! I never found much use for it. I used it on some dSLR and C100 files to bring the super whites into legal range and smooth the color channels before working in After Effects (I didn't want to work in float), but I don't think it has upscale/downscale options and I generally just used the default utility in FCP7 for my dSLR footage because it was faster and looked okay. But I'm kind of lazy... For keying or color correction it might give you a little more something.

    Nikon 8K?

I don't think they design and change half of what you think. Read the comments more than this article. About 1/4 the way down in the comments read the comments by a guy named ZM. He seems to know his stuff about this and he sort of sets the record straight. Sony does the heavy lifting on the sensor design, others just get to pick a few things they like over others. They are Far from designing the whole sensor. Maybe just get to modify the top layer a bit, and a few maybe special dates rates, and that is about it. Plus Sony knows everything they are going to do in advance so they have a hell of a leg up on the competition. Sure they probably can't use that feature for a bit themselves but.. https://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2018/07/17/pixels-for-geeks-a-peek-inside-nikons-super-secret-sensor-design-lab

  31. Cloud services are convenient at first but quickly become expensive and hard to move away from once you have a lot of data in them. Bottom line is video data is incredibly burdensome no matter how you want to store it.

  34. There are other reasons why someone would want a GH5 over a P4K. IBIS, flippy screen, higher frame rates, longer battery life, stills, reliability, smaller and lighter... and it’s these reasons why I shoot with one as opposed to a P4k. Not everything is purely down to image quality. Versatility is important for a lot of people. Can’t you just accept that the GH5 is the best camera for some people, are for others it’s not? No need to waffle about it.

  35. The Z6 has not beaten the GH5 by any stretch of the imagination. Hell the Z6 can't even do 10 bit in camera, No F Log without a recorder, 29 minute recording time, no Waveform Monitor, on and on, no Anamorphic at all. Get real.

  36. Ive seen a lot of complaints about video AF in this thread, do people actually use AF when shooting video? I've shot a variety of different projects and not once thought 'I could really do with autofocus right now'.

  40. Especially when the non-locking part of the system is in someone's pocket... And they're likely not as technically minded as the camera/audio crew.... and they don't know/care about the weaknesses of the gear... or how the equipment is set up... and they're mid conversation in an interview. All of that is also the reason why I use wires and a boom mic as much as I possibly can. I want to keep any potential errors, technical or otherwise away from people with no idea, and in the hands of people who can quickly solve them. Having you USB drive dangling out of your camera while you're filming is silly, but at least as the operator who's set everything up, you're aware of what the consequences could be and know how to best manage things to avoid those consequences. The talent wearing a wireless mic has no idea.

  41. def BRAW and then prores. But Zcam is not even thinking about implementing braw, they are going their own RAW route. Which at this point would involve using their own software to open the RAW files and convert them, which is a major flaw/pity.
