  1. Using 'girl' or femaleness as an insult in this day and age really is quite pathetic. Learn to 2019.

  2. You guys are getting this thing to sing. I have tried it out as well. I find the full-sensor recording a bit messed-up, I think I might need to revise my workflow. The crop recording is good, but working with a very small sensor area. I prefer the 70D at the moment... Found one for 200 euros used with a lens, high shutter count. It is now doing 14bit lossless compressed RAW with UHS card speed hack, full resolution no crop Super 35mm RAW at nearly 1920 x 1080. Damn thing looks like a Digital Bolex with Autofocus I will continue to explore my EOS R and 70D, check the blog soon

  3. I've been following the announcement of this camera and after all the fancy specs that sounds really good on paper, I've realized that, at least for me, this "resolution race, give me more K's stuff" have come to an end. Why? Because if some client ask me specifically for a 6K job I have a lot of better tools than this camera. If you truly need 6K/4K you probably have the budget to rent a RED Dragon/VV/Alexa with far more image quality, lenses, codecs. This camera sits in a really weird spot, because $2000/$2500 cameras are really good. But if I'm going to spend $4000 (add 3000-4000 for cages, batteries, monitors and some lens), maybe save some more money and I will instantly start looking on a more capable tool with a real jump on image quality and ergonomics like a C200 or a used C300MKII, or maybe a used RED. All of them with a good "name" for commercial and indie work. Or if I'm going to shoot an indie movie I can rent an Epic Dragon pack for $1500 a week and got far better quality and workflow.

  5. I’d bet that is due to the lenses. They shot this on Atlas anamorphic primes. Which imo are far from sharp. Indeed, Atlas states they were trying to achieve a vintage aesthetic with these lenses.

    bmp4k adventures

i'm excited its rained not heavy rain, but rain none the less. Which is wonderful seeing as most of western queensland is drought declared. So been undercover doing a few things. Heres a sneek peek of my youtube logo, got alot of sanding and polishing to do but you get the idea and remember you saw it here first ?. Those letters are 200mm high i did them big as a few of the smaller prototypes broke so i gave them some size to give em some strength. Their cut out of marble i had hoped to get some veining through the marble, some of that colour will come out when their polished i hope.

  9. OK, so I finally got some time today to shoot a few shots with the PL 50-200 I received a few weeks ago. I'm very pleased with this lens. Everything shot in 4Kp24 at 150Mbps LongGOP in HLG on GH5S.

  10. I have the S1 and plan to buy a second. Here’s my reasoning: I preordered then purchased at full price the S1 body/24-105 “kit.” The overall build quality of the amazing body and lens, BASE (pre-July firmware) specs and overall still and video performance justified that price. Plus, I received $300 off lens full retail when purchased as kit. Add a free $87 battery and $347 grip (improves portrait ergos and triples shoot time) and you have an amazing deal ($734 savings so far.) Add free warranty extension for two additional years and — wow! Add $199 film maker firmware update for FREE and I’m effing GRATEFUL! Add a second body for $550-$850 off with trade in and bonus (total) AND free film maker firmware AND 3 year warranty AND... Total discount (not including value of 2 3-year warranties) when compared to buying all items separately: 2 S1 bodies, 2 firmware upgrades, 1 24-105 f/4, 1 extra camera battery, 1 S1 battery grip. Retail total $7123. My total $5044! And, we can expect 1600MB/s CFExpress compatibility at 1tb capacity. And I have in hand passive legacy glass adapters for Nikon G, Nikon F and Minolta MD. And Sigma native primes are coming. And Kipon makes a Mamiya MF focal reducer. Nothing YET from Metabones, but just imagine what they’ll offer based on prior offerings... I could go on. Seriously. How can everyone not be buying S1s?

  11. Probably a case of sending your receipt to Panasonic by email or sending them your serial number, then they send you the Upgrade Key. It's free 10bit 422 VLOG so probably worth a quick email, just my guess. So $600 more than a Sony A7 III but superior specs in almost every category? Picture quality, colour, video modes, codec, frame rates, 4K 60, slow-mo 180fps, EVF, back screen, ergonomics, weather sealing, build quality, battery life, HDMI output (full size) and top LCD display? Sounds like a terrible deal! Damn if only it came with a freebie like a memory card!

  12. In Italy i have paid 3250 € for the Kit S1+24-105 with 4 years warranty and 1 spare battery. Now with the free firmware i find is a good deal...

  13. First it was Nikon Z6 that was smashed to bits and now the Lumix S1H is basically destroyed by you people. Even the United States and prices came into play on this thread. The proof is in the footage and how it captures that data and WE ALL SHOULD KNOW THIS BY NOW. We all rent or have rented the RED or C200 and do this for a reason. Some of you do influence people on what cameras they should look at and what cameras produce the best video quality. Sadly it seems very hard to get honest information that come from years or hard work and experience. It's just a beat up the latest brand that's not Sony and let that band fall apart. Why? No one on here has used the S1H and all this talk about it being crap and failing is pathetic. Let's talk gear and about the craft we work in because that's why we joined this group. I haven't searched this forum for anyone or any behavior that wasn't present by your post and others that aggressively have hate and distain for America. The same kind of hate caries over the how you and they comment towards companies they want to fail. As far as my grandfather goes and his service to this country I would say that speaks for itself and other that have done the same and made sacrifices for this country. The S1H and this marketing push followed what Panasonic did with the S1 and S1R and even the EVA-1, so that in itself doesn't deserve the hate driven comments some people are making. Panasonic also uses the in-between period to finalize spec and listen to what the market wants. I don't blame Panasonic for wanting to be the first to announce a 6K hybrid camera and beat Sony at the same game everyone plays.

  14. I also wish screens would get larger. Maybe somewhere in between 3 inches and 5 inches could be an interesting middle group. I wonder if we could have have 12-bit 4-2-2, since we also have 10-bit 4-2-0.

  15. Obviously I'd like as many options as possible when it comes to codec and bit rate, but I also don't absolutely NEED more than that for a lot of my work. Being able to shoot an entire event on one or two SD cards in 4K on my GH5 is wonderful. And when I have shot in log I've been happy with the results. Would raw, ProRes, etc be nice though? Absolutely!

  16. Nice one Andrew! These frame grabs look very nice coming from the 70D and even the 7D! Glad to see Mr. Blue sky in the image, sets a nice scene.

  19. Yeah I just bought a EOS M myself yesterday. Haven't got it yet from Amazon. Get it the 4th. So a new toy to play with. Too hard to pass up for the 140 Dollars I paid for it. A white body at that. I will be using my M42 lenses on it until I save a few more pennies for other options.

  20. Number one advantage: 7D - CF card like 5Diii, higher continuous write speeds.

  21. I noted the same immediately, there are even problems with slight defocusing. (Even nothing to say about choose of actors/dancers and coreography in comparison with some other promo clips, say for Eva 1.) For me, at the moment pretty disappointing, especially keeping in mind pompous advertising of cine dream result. Maybe interesting to remind for comparison https://vimeo.com/234811303

  22. Some 14bit lossless frames from my 70D. No sensor crop, full width Super 35mm. Continuous with SD UHS hack (approx. 50MB per sec) It's very filmic. No anti-aliasing filter used, just classic EF 28-70mm F2.8 with ND. Digital Bolex with AF finally here! What are the advantages of the 7D? One more... Seems VAF isn't even really needed! (all frame grabs exported from DNGs as upscaled 4K JPEGs)

  23. The footage is well shot, lit, and graded, but am I the only one surprised at how soft it looks generally? I know clinically sharp is not an ideal to chase anyway, but the majority of the footage on that compilation looks soft and mushy to my taste.

  25. I think the price really hurt it. For $1,000 less I think it'd have gotten a much warmer welcome, especially given how good the footage I've seen looks. I'm jealous of the people that could afford it! Color science is very important, especially for things that need quick turnaround. I used to shoot in log/flat picture profiles, but I've been pleased overall with Panasonic's color. I usually will tweak it slightly in post, especially when I am using different cameras, but having good color straight out of camera is really nice.

  26. Not running dual card slots is risky af. Run a single slot, have a bunch of corrupted video files and what do you tell the client? "Most pros don't run dual slots" Even if you have the time and money to reshoot, good luck convincing them to hire you again after that.

  31. "None of the above" Honestly "price" is the only really important thing for me from the list above. Compared to my NX1, the only improvements I would want are: - 10 bit HEVC. That's why I put robust codec, though Raw is not something I'm interested in so I think that option in the poll means the exact opposite of what I mean by robust codec. - EF adapter with aperture control (which is why I put lens selection--basically all I want is to be able to adapt EF lenses and control aperture). - Less rolling shutter - Better low light - FF or at least APS-C, so I can use vintage lenses properly - Timecode sync - Higher frame rates in 4k - DC power input for external batteries or tethering Pretty much everything on the list is "nice to have but don't really care." Obviously for things like "dynamic range" and "battery life" it's important, but as long as it's on par with the average DSLR/M cameras from the last few years that's sufficient. Edit: added a few things

  32. One of the reason why I'm active in this forum more is there are so many knowledgeable people. Most people stay objective unlike some toxic website that cater to a particular brand. Competition is good for everyone. Whether you don't like for its size, ergonomic, price, it's good that they are pushing the industry forward and should be commended - best EVF, best IBIS, 4K30 internal vlog with XlR audio all for $2000 I paid for it, -6EV, and great sensor. If you consider what the S1 bring for $2000 that's crazy value compared to 1DXII or 5DIV days. I had a budget of $3500 for a new camera, and I got S1 for $2000. There are some improvement I wish Panasonic do which is AF and eyeAF similiar to Canon & Sony. They also need better MC-21 EF-L to support AF-C. They also need to make the camera about 15% smaller. Otherwise I'm pretty happy I got the camera for $2000. It's the best purchase I made in the last 10 years. I sold my 5D IV for $2000.

  33. Wow! That's a really nice move by Panasonic - really looking after us early adopters. Suddenly now, this is definitely the best value for money pro mirrorless camera at $2500 (or so).

    Panasonic S1 Firmware Update

Confirmed. The firmware is free for existing S1 customers and new buyers until September 30th! Can't wait to get mine. I was an early adopter. Bought my S1 by April 4th, so got free battery grip, free battery, free 3-year extended warranty, and now free upgrade for $2500. Bargain of the year!

  35. Alexa and RED are made for professional productions with "real budgets" and "real crews". So needless to say a dedicated focus puller is generally part of the production's expense. But if you want to see some piss poor RED footage just do a search for "RED Raven footage". A lot of aspiring filmmaker bought that camera thinking they could do it alone... what a cluster Fuk of out of focus mess. It's not for selfies... it's so a solo operator can frame their shots etc... without needing the talent in the scene. This of course is yet another issue a major production does not have to worry about.

Yeah, the low light from the P4K would be lovely on the GH5 Completely agree that it's about tradeoffs in getting the shot. I'm up for the comparison, but grading it is much easier than shooting it (and I don't own the cameras, so...), which is where it's currently at. In good time Indeed it does! It's good to see people sensibly trading things off against each other instead of just going for the latest thing. And speaking more generally about older tech still being good, tradeoffs in size, accessibility, and usability, I thought I'd re-share this 720p video.. ???

  37. It's looking like Panasonic blew it again. Was this thing not developed by the folks that designed the GH5? I guess not. Because it's clearly off the mark for many would be purchasers. I'll wait for the official release, but atm this camera is not looking like something I would buy into... that goes for the whole system. The Canon pro bodies should be interesting... depending on what they cripple? The XH2 may well be amazing. And if such a beast is ever released... the Sony A73 will likely be one to watch.
    1 point
  38. I’ll agree, if priced VERY aggressively, it will sell. But that price is going to need to be no more than the competition... Canon, Nikon and Sony... all priced well below $2k.

  39. Yes but Arri is also renting equipement itself to large productions, They are able to offer complete seamless solutions. Red is selling luxury marketing, including David Fincher who they sponsor . Nothing wrong with that, it s a business after all, but I feel red is in a awkward position now, I think that netflix trend with red is going to fade now that Arri have the LF and the LF mini, those camera are still very recent and that article don t reflect that. Canon and sony have a more define cine/broadcast department that I believe is profitable overall ( I see FS7 and C300 everywhere) Panasonic is more blurry with that I find. Blackmagic are outputting cinema gear at consumer price and also sell a full post production system to go with it, I think their approach is different , people buy because it s cheap and they are willing to try the product, so whether the client is satisfied or not they still make sales.
    1 point
  40. Well yeah, they are slowly getting in trouble, they are partnering with foxcon to bring cheaper 8k camera, that a sign that they can t keep up with the market. Almost everything that made RED special can now be find in competitors products for a much cheaper price. Arri have a complete ecosystem of products, from camera to lenses, to follow focus, to stabilizer, to crane, to light ect. Everything they manufacture is made to endure, that a very different approach from a lot of other manufacturer, and that what high level production are paying for as well.
    1 point
  41. Well if this camera is going to be an option for major productions perhaps a flip screen and PDAF are not needed. After-all, if one is spending several million dollars on a production it's a given that they would have external wireless monitors and dedicated focus pullers. But for a small operation / one man band, well, a flip screen and PDAF could go a long way to make life easier. Perhaps I misunderstood who this camera is targeting? I'll let Michael Bay know at once.
    1 point
  42. Well there are two items that were perhaps the biggest complaints on the S1: 1. No flip screen 2. No PDAF If Panasonic omits both of these items... again, we can assume they are properly out of touch with their market. I honestly cannot recall anyone saying, “the S1 would be great... if only it had 6k recording”.

  43. With ML Raw, you really need to expose to the right as much as possible. I don’t think a 1.2 lens at ISO 100 in a dimly lit room is enough light. With the 5D3, which is better in lowlight than the eos-m, I’ll be at ISO 400 in a well lit room with a 1.4 lens. In a dimly lit room, I’d be at 800 or 1600 ISO.
    1 point
  44. This lens is very impressive. I was thinking about purchasing the 50mm Canon 1.2 as I've had a few of them in the past and really miss it. It would have to be adapted to for my Sony A7III as would the Voigtlander but this rendering and bonus sharpness has got me thinking! We really are spoilt for choice these days, so many great cameras at reasonable prices. Basically just pick one that suits your style and off you go. No excuses for not going out and creating good art. Look forward to seeing the review Andrew.
