  1. Do you really listen to Tony and his wife? Nikon sales have rebounded after the drop and why listen to people paid by Sony? My cameras not affected. Good luck!

First purchase of the 2019 edition of Tokyo Used Photo Gear Frenzy. Found a 7Artisans 28mm f1.4 and adjourned to a cafe to put it on so this is literally the first shot with it but more to come later in the week. Shot wide open obviously and, well, it certainly glows.

Fantasies do come true for people willing to work hard over many years but sometimes, a dream can be realised simply by sitting down for a very long time and doing nothing, until the object of your desire becomes a bit old and tatty. Yes, now is your chance to own an Arri Alexa. Read the full article

  6. i remember bm saying that braw would be coming to the p4k pretty early in the campaign. Although they did forget to mention that it would be at the expense of cinemaDng ? i have to wonder if mine now has added value since i have 6.1. not that i'm interested in selling, took 5 months to get this one, couldn't do that again ?

  7. Some may find this useful... Toms videos are pitched at people less familiar with colour grading, but are thorough. TL;DR: First node is to convert whatever format you shot (eg, log) into a more rec709 amount of contrast and saturation Second node has a key for skin tones and you can adjust mid-tone detail for a beauty effect if you like Third node is applying a LUT for a cool look Fourth node is in parallel to the third node, and gets inputs from the second node of both the image and the key (which is inverted) The third and fourth node go into a Layer mixer which goes to output What this does is basically put the skin tones on top of the LUT, and then adjusting the Key Output you can adjust how transparent the skin is, blending it into the overall look.

  8. Nikon is a Dumpster Fire as of late. Sinking ship. Canon is doing the same dumb shit. Down the road there will be no Canon or Nikon. They both have their head stuck up their ass. China will stick Japan's head on a Pike.

  12. Ooh, I don't know... if you wait long enough. Those VHS plugins were/are pretty popular in music videos! Having said that though, there is still something about ML RAW, even on a non-classic Canon body, that is delightful in a way that even the nicest non-RAW modes of any modern MILC just don't quite have. And the image from the Alexa really is just exquisite ???

  13. Great post. I like how you linked the Alexa and early DSLR/Mirrorless cameras to the pursuit of a filmic image. With @DaveAltizer ‘s recent return to the 1DC and this post, I wonder if you have any interest in writing a 10 years later review on some of the original cameras that paved the way to the pursuit of that elusive filmic look and how they hold up today? Although outdated, I think the mjpeg codec adds a special meatiness to the IQ of some the earlier cameras... your hacked GH1 videos come to mind as a perfect example and it would be interesting to see how you would use these camera today. With the prices of the 1DC and C100 steadily declining, I must admit I’m tempted to give one or the other a try.

  15. Let me know how the Japan store camera hunting goes. Some great shops there. I found a Canon 200mm F1.8 EF in Berlin or 1150 euros last week No idea how I am going to fit it in my hand luggage though.

  16. Difficult to predict. But I wouldn't write them off too early. CaNikon have very strong brands and for certain purposes the lens/camera product lines are hard to beat currently. I've sold my D4 as the D810 is more than enough for my portrait work but can't imagine for instance that Bundesliga photogs would change their habits and switch to some Chinese mirrorless plastic toy... Not so fast at least. By the way, recently there was a rather provoking article on a highly frequented news page (Spiegel) with the title 'True photographers use Nikon cameras' (not Leica), in my opinion kind of showing the strength of the Nikon (and Canon) brands. Sorry for the German link: https://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/web/leica-werbefilm-in-china-echte-fotografen-benutzten-nikon-kameras-a-1264584.html ?

Good stuff - I look forward to seeing what you come up with. I shoot sunsets quite often, mostly time-lapse but not always, here's a random few: What are you thinking of shooting? Timelapses have their own challenges separately to normal speed video. Some general thoughts are that unless it's very cloudy the DR will be more than your camera, so you'll have to choose between blowing out the sun (and maybe the sky around it) or darkening the shadows a huge amount. The answer to this is to think about what the subject of the shot is and expose for that. In my case the subject is normally the sunset itself, so I just expose for that, letting the sun blow out but not the sky around it, and then it is what it is and grade appropriately. [Edit: the best approach is to just do it every day, or whenever there are clouds in the sky but not on the horizon, and then just do it over and over again, until there are no more mistakes to make and you start getting what you want ] and I totally understand about the Aussie sun - it's pretty harsh. On my travels I'm regularly surprised at how much less DR people in other countries require!

  18. You should try to understand more what people write, and wait a minute or two before answering. Or maybe I was not clear. But, anyway... Look, allow me to auto quote myself : I loved the camera, period. I have just reacted to the link talking about the potential issue (what Nikon and you name "service advisory"). The fact that you don't know about the d600 disaster tells a lot about your lack of knowledge concerning Nikon recent history tinted of fails (and greatness like the D850) If you had possessed a born dead D600, a 3 times recalled (yes you read it : 3 f*cking recalls !!!!!) D750, you would understand. So, I do not freak out, it's just a natural reaction to Nikon's poor launching of cameras. Plus, as I wrote above, I checked on Nikon's website and my unit is not concerns. There is a website for us customers, in order to check if you have to send your potential defective camera. So I used it, and it is OK for me, period. Then, because I know Nikon and am equipped with their cameras since a long time, I just question if this kind of "service advisory" could impact sales and resale value. I would keep it if I could. But I am an amateur, and having car troubles , I face difficulties to transport myself to my joyful 9to5. As I wouldn't want to handicap myself in the rat-race (irony of course), I have to sell something to help to pay the cost. Anyway, enjoy your z6 (and don't forget to check for service advisory ? ) !

Went out to shoot this mornings game, new rig (as posted above) and new monopod (one of ebay's cheapest). I didn't have time to test the rig out before going to the game, and the verdict is.... The head on the new monopod is an example of you-get-what-you-pay-for and overall it's slightly too long, and moving the mic forwards resolved the conflict with my forehead, but not the conflict with the brim of my hat. DOH!! New plan is to move the mic to the side to make it hat-compatible, and to modify the monopod to remove the head. This is my first attempt at putting the mic to the side: I've disassembled the monopod, but unfortunately the head didn't mount to the body via a 1/4-20 so I'll have to order a 1/4-20 and install one myself. I figure I'll be using it with the monopod basically vertical anyway as I'll be panning basically the whole time, so I won't need the head. Watch this space...

  21. Nothing personal to you and my comment to your post. I don't take comments personal if people don't agree with me. My comment was for calling it a recall when its a "service advisory" were they are fixing the issue. I'm sorry you have to sell the camera but as the v2.0 firmware is out and what it addressed makes the Z6 and Z7 much better in the AF department not just Eye AF. I mentioned Sony because I have the A6500 and had overhearing issues since day one. And if Sony haters attacked Sony for this issues sales would plummet. See how it's not mentioned about Sony and our heating? If it was Nikon what would people say? Most people on here haven't used the Z6 or Z7 but have very strong opinions. I've looked up Z6 prices and don't see the fallen prices that you seem panicked about. When have I ever mentioned buyers remorse ? Geoff_L is the one freaking out. I got a good deal on my Z6 and love the camera. How does the 24-70 f4 compare to the 50 f1.8 S in quality? I used the 24-70 f4 for a few testing days before fitting the Z6 / 50 f1.8. What was the "D600 desaster"? and did you have any VR issues? I haven't heard any VR issues on the internet except when people were running VR and IBIS at the sea-time. I wonder if the VR issues conflicted with the v2.0 update.

  24. Well, regardless of what the general opinion on the internet is - I'm quite satisfied with my Z6 and the new firmware is cool too. Yes, since I've got mine already in Nov and so it's rather an early one, I need to send it in. But at least Nikon is doing something, they seem to have learnt from the D600 desaster. Regarding the current eBay value, I wouldn't care too much about it. Unless you're not interested in the camera any more. I for my part am still using my two NX1s as well, so can easily bridge the time until I get the Z6 back. In particular its viewfinder is much better than the older NX1 plus the new 14-30/4 is really great. Just my 2c.

  25. Had two back to back shoots yesterday! Busy busy (had to turn down three other jobs for that day as well). Meant I needed to put together a 2nd bag for the people who were covering me on the 1st shoot while I went to do my 2nd shoot of the day. https://www.facebook.com/DavidCMPeterson/photos/a.277946442237979/2523377981028136/ And then today, I felt quite short.... twice! haha (I'm actually 6' 3" / 190cm tall) Used an applebox and a small step ladder. https://www.facebook.com/DavidCMPeterson/photos/a.977953998903883/2523661934333074/

well i am sitting down but the only coffee worth drinking is this stuff ? ordered a cheap set of neutral density and graduated filters to play with, the aussie sun needs some calming down so to speak . Once i figure out what i tend to use most often I'll spring for something more pricey. Can anyone comment on best practices for videoing a sunset ? I have also created a youtube channel in anticipation. it should be a pretty laid back affair nothing too serious using the bmp4k and the elmoscope. i'm no casey neistat but i'm hoping the anamorphic angle gives it a bit of difference. been looking at the filter sizes on my pentax m42 lenses trying to figure out a common size for the m42 to elmoscope adapter. at the moment i'm getting some grub screws/bolts machined into the old mount the will attach to the piece of alloy i got cut on the waterjet that will support and secure the elmoscope to the smallrig. the machinist reckons theres no problem cutting the fine threads that the lenses use. i do think i need some kinda short barrel with a sleeve in it to alloy the elmoscope optics to align properly once it is screwed together. I hope to have it back by next friday, i can take some pics. I should also be able to wrap a bit of tape around them both and do a bit of shooting anamorphically. till i figure out a thread size for the adapter.

I finally finished that roll of filament so Black is the new Electric Blue If you did want to go wireless with your project, Bluetooth might be a bit too short range. The easiest thing to do would be to use two Arduinos (one with the wiichuck and the other connected to the tripod head) and put one of these HC12 modules on each one. They are about £4 each and will let you have a wireless serial link between the controller and the head of in excess of 1km as opposed to probably 20-30m of bluetooth. They are really simple to implement in your code as the library lets you address them exactly as you would a serial port for debugging etc so you should be able to get it up and running in your current sketch really quickly by sending the values from the Arudino with the wiichuck that you would have sent to the controlling pins as data out to the HC12 serial port instead and have the Arduino with the head attached picking them up and actioning them. Mmmm.....I might even think about making that the 73rd project that I'm simultaneously working on as I've just thought of a way to send camera data to it as well to make a cheap high end PTZ camera.
