  2. Gen 4 uses a common defined gamut so you can use Broadcast Film for space (Broadcast Film gamut is the same as Pocket4K/UMP/etc Gen 4 gamut) and Pocket 4K Film for gamma. Hopefully this will be cleaned up a little in a future update.

  3. Oh hey I'm the maker of this original post and I found this thread just now. I'm little late, but the footage of the church is just some Pocket 4K footage I found and the forest stuff I shot in Banff, Alberta on the GH4.

    What Camera Is He Using?

So, I watched the 2Gems Media's video a few times and some of their other videos on their channel. It's an interesting modern style that he's obviously using to much success. I wouldn't call it a cinematic style. He's not afraid to let his whites clip and it looks like he degrains his footage and doesn't add any back, but just leaves it very clean. The most important thing he does is get a nice neutral white balance. Also, he seem to push overall exposure into the upper range. I'm not saying he lifts blacks, but his middle exposure area feels higher than normal. Conversely, for a cinema look, I'd push everything much darker. I'm sure this is to make a home feel warm and inviting. I also noticed he seems to put a soft glow around his highlights-- or he has a filter that does it. In any case, I put a little glow at the very top of the exposure range. Didn't use any secondaries or keys, or animate any values. So, I just let the beginning remain a bit green since it's getting the bounce off the walls anyway. It is a bit of a challenging shot with the mix of light sources and colors, so I just aimed for a fairly neutral white balance that I just tweaked a tad after pulling a white sample off the back window frame. Anyway, here's my interpretation of his style. Let me know if you think I got close. I included my node graph for the order I did stuff. Only one operation per node. Just posting last and first frames. Last frame first, since I looked at that the most for the hero look. I feel I could lift the exposure even a quarter to half stop more, but it bugs the hell out of me to be this bright already, and I did try to protect highlights a little more than I think the 2gems guy does. Must... protect... highlights.... ?

  6. In Resolve you can kind of cheat and use the Glow plugin, which allows individual control of the spread of red, green and blue, so you can spread the red more than the others and you'll get a red halo. It's not the same exactly, but is a ton less work

  7. Hello everybody! So, I've attended the Blackmagic Raw seminar held at CVP here in London yesterday and I thought I'd share some impressions: Let's start with the bad news first: unfortunately there is no official release date for BRAW on the PCC4K yet.. They confirmed it is coming to the camera 100% but they want to make absolutely sure that the update is safe and won't brick the camera (which sounds like a sensible plan indeed!) ? That been said I can't wait to have the option to use BRAW, it's such a clever and well implemented solution and i reckon it will be the best choice on the PCC4K for 90% of the occasions. What really impressed me is how good the performance is in Resolve compared to CNDG, it is entirely possile to edit BRAW on a laptop without creating optimised media and/or dropping the resolution. To drive the point home even more they worked on a grading project that was hosted on a USB 3.0 spinning drive and it worked flawlessly, i was quite shocked when I saw a clip with a speed ramp set in optical flow playing at 24fps at full quality on an entry level MBP! Another super clever feature of BRAW is the ability to shoot with any dynamic range preset and being able to revert back to film mode afterwards, that is pretty awesome for dailies or things like that. I also very appreciated the fact that they were totally sincere in showing us the difference in visual quality between BRAW and CDNG and, although there is a slight difference in quality with CDNG being a bit sharper, said difference is only visible in extreme magnification (pixel peeping basically) so in real life BRAW is perfectly adequate especially considering the many advantages it offers in terms of workflow. The Blackmagic guys reckoned that CDNG would be the best choice only in very specific situations where having the best quality possible is paramount (like VFX for istance). Overall it's been a very interesting demonstration and i think BRAW will make the PCC4K even better value for money, exciting times ahead!

  13. Here's some stills from actual 16mm film. Notice how the trees have an outline when looking into the sky. That's what edge detect does well at replicating.

If you can afford the Z ecosystem, go the Z6 way, if not, X-T3 will be sufficient for what you do and I big upgrade of what you are having right now. GH5 is a video workhorse but not a great photo camera (I did a couple photo jobs with one last summer), especially for someone do 90% photos. If it was the other way around (90% videos) then GH5 is a great idea.

  16. I do that also! I mostly do it for brighter light sources like car lights and streetlights. One thing I notice in film is that there is a very soft outline sometimes on objects. That's what I use edge detect for. Key the brightest parts, and then add edge detect and adjust to taste.

  17. In the liquor bottles those reds are very saturated, although the other colours may not have been, maybe that's a Sony thing perhaps? The greens in the foliage through the windows are pretty saturated too. I'm not sure how much improvement there would be from changing cameras, and how much of it is just the actual lighting in the location. Obviously with 10-bit files you can push the colour around a bit easier, but it would be a lot of work to try and get rid of the green/purple behaviour of this shot. What comes to mind is keying the walls and flattening the saturation, obviously a different key for the green vs the blue walls. There are a few ways to reduce colour variation, one is the Colour Compressor (I think that's what it's called?) and another is just to partially desaturate the area and tint it to the desired colour, but these are a lot of work in post.

  18. Here's what I ended up with.. As I said, no idea if it's any good or not, but happy to share what I did if it is of interest. There's two versions - the second one is a little different with contrast and saturation, but the WB treatment is still the same. They're both quite saturated though (look at the liquor bottles).

  20. I don't know, I appreciate the GH line. I think the GH5S was simply a tech limitation as far as IBIS goes. 4k 60p and 10 bit were big advancements. I think we may see something more like the GH5 in a less expensive body once the GH6 comes out. Putting one out now would take away from the GH line too much which is still relatively new.

  21. I found the GH5 grain pleasing up to 3200 iso. 6400 iso was a mess. I never tried the GX85 at zero NR, at -5 it would like quite digital above 800 especially 3200. It wasn't that the noise was bad but the whole image looked kind of smudgy.

  23. Yeah, I’m really just messing around with the footage after I back up my files and Resolve is great for that because I don’t have to save any timeline, so it’s good to test out different workflows. I don’t portend to be a great colorist or editor, so the simplest workflow will be go to for this project. I still have to buy a better monitor so I’m not flying blind over here. Thanks for your help.

    Lenses

@kye good eye, yeah they are hard to compare. Both were shot wide open and the Canon is about a stop and a half faster. The Zeiss definitely has less contrast and is only a single coated lens. The WB is definitely different so, that would probably lend to the greener tint with the Zeiss. Also the Canon “test” was shot right after the Summer, so my actor was tanner, lending to his darker skin, which was near impossible to lighten. Motion blur aside, the Zeiss is probably a sharper lens than the Canon, which is crazy considering the Zeiss is probably 30 years older but that Canon lens has character for days.

I can confirm that turning OLED Color on/off creates a visible difference when shooting a colorchecker. Attached a photo of each. Looks like a bit higher saturation overall, but it is also not linearly increased for each color. Rather, blues seem to be a bit higher in saturation with OLED color on, and the magenta trace seems to pull true to magenta, while the magenta trace pulls slightly to the blue side of magenta with OLED color off. Also, my wallpaper, which I consider to be in the white family but containing some color looks much more yellow/warmer with OLED color on. However, the white squares on the color checker are almost identical between on and off, so white balance isn't really affected directly. oled off.bmp oled on.bmp

  26. I wonder if Atomos is seeing the end of mainstream external recorders in the coming years. For a while, Atomos had a niche market of being the best option for people on a budget to record higher quality footage. Back around 2014, I had discussions about external recorders, and my position was that they were a bad long term investment, since I thought it was only a matter of time before internal recording was higher quality. Now we've got several photo/video hybrids and budget video cameras that shoot 10 bit, and even a couple that do 422, essentially removing the benefit of an external recorder as far as quality goes. I know there are still benefits to external recorders and will be for the near future, but as internal codecs and formats continue to improve, I predict that fewer people will buy external recorders. I think it's smart for Atomos to both pursue higher quality with ProRes Raw, and to also expand to building dedicated monitors for the market that is satisfied with improved internal recording. As far as this product, it has some cool features. I'm sure it's a fantastic screen, and the Analysis tool looks amazing. I would prefer more physical buttons and less reliance on touchscreen, though.

  31. review on this from facebook XT-3 group : "Just shot a short with Kipon Speedbooster and Leica R set. My thoughts. Well built and excellent optics. Con. You’ll need a 15mm lens support to minimize jiggle. The XF to EF still has some micro play. You’ll need to play nice on changing focus direction or long lenses will show jiggle. Someone really needs to make the PL style EF mount to XF to be a narrative : commercial beast. That said, the full frame image is insane on the XT3. Slight vignetting on Leica 50. Useable and can be windowed. The rest of the set was fine. Great on Canon 24-105 and 70-200. AF works decently but hunts a bit compared to native.

  32. Cool. Midtone contrast is also a thing one can apply after a succesful grade to milk the cow a bit more. After a long day of grading these little things are a beautiful gratification. Thanks for posting! Akazienstraße I would think, Schöneberg?:)
