  1. I think offering full frame (no crop) 12 bit raw video on a US$2000 hybrid body pretty much meets the definition of going into complete and total overdrive.

  2. Oh look! It's time for Canon to roll out their old chips again! The EOS RP has an identical sensor to the 6D Mark II, with a micro-lens array design more suited to mirrorless lenses. Canon openly admit in interviews that the RP cannot even do cropped 4K/30p without overheating. Even the modest bump in frame rate would have necessitated "a larger body design", they say. Not sure I believe them, but clearly the technology is behind the curve. Most disappointingly of all, it turns out that the EOS RP lacks Dual Pixel AF in 4K video mode, like the M50, which means it's a "no-buy" from me and better to stick with the EOS R until the pro body is released, which perhaps, is the intention. Fuji on the other hand - an even smaller, lighter (380g) and cheaper camera has a full-width 6K sensor readout without overheating and most of the 4K video features of the superb X-T3 for under $900, with F-LOG, 120fps 1080p and bonus 10bit 4:2:2 external output. There is a CHASM between Canon and Fuji in their video technology. Read the full article

  6. Hmmm. Z6 sidelined for video... I have a huge Pelican case of vintage and modern Nikon-F glass that begs to differ. And Minolta MD. And Exacta. I can mount virtually any lens I want. B4, PL... Any look I want in terms of contrast, flare, lack of flare, glass-cutting sharpness of Nikon S glass. Having shot professionally with: Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Nikon and Canon, I’m not a fanboy of any brand. In a gen-1 camera, Nikon gives us: Full-width 4K readout. IBIS. Nikon color. Most legacy F mount Nikon/Sigma AF glass 10-bit 4:2:2 and soon ProRes RAW HDMI out. Eye AF (in May.) Atomos development collaboration. Weather sealing. Good battery life. Nikon build quality. An excellent touch interface. Nikon menu structure and customization. XQD/CFExpress speed, capacity and reliability (May.) Robust low light recording. Good tracking AF in 1.0 firmware... Canon gives us crazy expensive glass (again), crippled features and weird fn slidy bar thingy “innovation.” Panasonic gives us questionable DFD CDAF. The S1 is cool, until your bitrate is too low and your AF hunts and breathes constantly. Hmmm. Sony gives us little robotic squares that do the job in 8-bit 4:2:0 like Mr. Spock, with all the associated charm. I’m really more of a Captain Kirk guy. Gets shit done with flair and style. Reliable. Fun at parties. Nikon has no cinema line to “protect” by making their RF/EF bodies suck. Nikon is free to innovate. More so than Sony, Panasonic—maybe all save Fuji. Canon. Meh. Idiots. Nice color science. Still, idiots to me. Maybe once Sigma makes native Z glass and a smart adapter. Maybe one for EF glass too. People will look at the future and see Canon continuing to fall behind as B/C cams to Cxxx bodies. Maybe Sony heads in the same direction to protect Cinema cams. My money is on Nikon Z. Literally.

  7. ? Nikon Z is underrated... It has a lot more to offer & curios about the coming firmware update and other z's like z5 or 9... Imagine the shitstorm if Nikon had 4K crop!

  9. Yeah this is just silly. I can’t believe it doesn’t have 24p in 1080?!?! Huh? I think what this proves is that Canon does not see low budget video users as a target audience at this price point. With that being said, I’m sure it will be a nice camera but they just saved me $600 because if I want Canon 4K or 1080p DPAF, I may as well just get an M50... 1.6x crop 4K crop on the RP or 2.5x crop on the M50’s... whatever. At least I can shoot 1080p at 24p on the M50.

    NX1 Eterna Profile

Hi Gals and Guys. I've been trying to match the NX1 to the Fuji Eterna profile in camera for a couple weeks and think I finally have it dialed in. Here are my settings: OLED color - ON Picture Wizard - Custom Color Green .95 Saturation -3 Sharpness -10 Contrast 0 Hue -6 Using FCPX and color match I'm able to get it to match perfectly in a click or two. If anyone has other ideas or better settings I'd be happy to try them and post results.

  11. Also if you're just starting out from scratch, then you could really begin with any DAW in the world as you'd be a beginner with all of them. Thus I'd suggest you learn Reaper instead which is a fully featured DAW, over Audition

  12. I don't usually get annoyed about cameras, but this is beyond ridiculous now. I think if you primarily shoot video, then forget about Canon. At every single price point, overall the competition offers far more attractive packages. There's always some baffling omission or lack of compulsory features that ruin every release.... "New 4k full frame but you can't use our class leading DPAF in the best video mode! The 4k isn't full frame either. The price is very low but the lenses are twice the price! Wanna buy?" Rant over. Where's my Panasonic? ?

  13. you can switch them to linear focus mode. With this the focus get's predictable, but throw is very long. edit: the sound stays though.

  15. You can talk your shit all day dude, show me your photography work, I’ll show you mine. You might be surprised. For sure for your cat pictures you are right you won’t see any difference in DR. I have had FF Canons Nikons Sonys. The real life usable DR difference between Canon bodies and Sony/Nikon is INSANE for landscape work. Night and day. This camera is another epic joke from Canon that performs less than crop bodies in every single way but lowlight performance. When they decide to release a body that has similar specs from other cameras released this decade, I will be the first to buy one. I have 0 brand loyalty. Just shooting loud what we should not accept which is a lot in the today’s Photography market owned by a couple of old-fashion Japanese.

  16. I'll keep that in mind too. It probably won't see a ton of heavy use outside of long recording sessions which I rarely do. I will definitely use it on short films though. Maybe I'll fall in love with RAW and be using it all the time though.

    Behind the Scenes footage

Same for me in my day job. If I come across potential work and I think "wow, that seems like it might be beyond my skill level" I stop and think about the alternative, which is someone else doing it. That usually 'inspires' enough confidence to jump in and do it My advice if you're contemplating taking on jobs you're not sure if you're up for is this: Get as much experience as you can in your own time When talking to potential clients, highlight your strengths and previous experience, but be honest and don't promise anything you can't be 100% sure you can deliver If the client takes you on, work your ass off to make them as happy as you possibly can (both by how you conduct yourself as well as the quality of the work) - even if you don't care about the work or the client this is the strategy to learn the most from the job Leverage that successful work to 'level-up' and get better work next time (if you deliver a $2K result on a $500 job you will have an example of $2000 work and can use it to book $2K jobs, etc etc) Opportunity looks a lot like hard work. I've had a lot of growth in my career because I took on jobs that stretched my abilities. I didn't get those jobs because I'm great at selling (I'm not) - I got them because they were awful jobs that the more experienced people didn't want. I took jobs where everyone else would suck air into their mouths when they heard about them, I took a job where I was the fourth person to do it and the previous person quit after the first day. I've gotten lots of experience because of this and learned a ton on basically every job. By being humble, asking for input from others (when appropriate), and focusing on the work instead of yourself, you can build trust with people. I've been on jobs where everything went sideways because that was just how the situation was going to go, and the people around me saw that I was making the best of the situation and didn't blame me, in fact they had a higher opinion of me for keeping calm and keeping focussed on the work. People will re-hire those people that they like to work with because they have the right attitude, so that's the best long-term strategy.

  18. i find resolve and fusion to be better than premiere and after effects. While premiere does have some nicer editing features, i have spotty reliability and significantly worse performance than on resolve. Node based compositing is easier for complex comps, and overall i find fusion's design to be more consistent than after effects'. Fusion does have a timeline as well. Using fusion is less intuitive coming from traditional video editing software, but is very nice to use. However, blackmagic software is GPU heavy. Your mx150 might not be sufficient for resolve. Fortunately, resolve and fusion are both free so you can go try it risk free. But if you decide to use blackmagic software, you can upgrade your gpu for the cost of a year subscription to adobe.

  20. Her voice actually only has a very, very small amount of room ambience on it so I wouldn't bark up that particular tree in pursuit of that sound. Here is a tutorial for Audition to click along with for normalising and compressing a voiceover which will get you further along. Bear in mind though that these things are dependent on the source material so you will likely need to tweak the process (e.g. if you have some big peaks from plosives, then take care of them first before you normalise as they will skew the outcome) but its a good grounding in what you need to be considering. Once you have the levels in order then you can move on to sweetening the sound further with EQ which, again, there are good tutorials on his channel for that and further enhancements that you can do in Audition.

  21. Yeah, take your time testing. Different af-c settings for example. It’s nothing you should decide without really thinking about it

  22. Play around with the dynamics processing first before adding reverb, some eq after that. And then don’t make the reverb too wet!

  23. If audio is a big concern, then get the f/2.0 the f/1.4 is a very nice lens with incredible look. but the focus motor is loud. The f/2.0 also focuses faster in stills. i got the 1.4. I don’t record audio with build in mic or in the hotshoe and if the mic isn’t too close the loud motor is no problem I don’t think the update will change anything about that, since that’s all due to different hardware.

    Fujifilm X-T30?

I bet by the end of this year, once a few secondhand X-T30 show up, and secondhand Atomos Ninja V start to show up cheap too, then this will be a hell of a combo! It certainly is something I'll be keeping a close eye on. Much less than on the Sony a6x00 series cameras!

  30. Seems I've gotten pretty good at understanding how Canon will cripple their new cameras? ???Or maybe they read my post, so they know what to cripple? I bet Canon will cripple the "Pro" version of the EOS R by adding that new sensor with BSI and DPAF... with Eye Dectect that works. And I also bet they'll screw us over by adding IBIS, dual card slots and a higher resolution EVF... a wider flip out screen and raw output ? We can only hope they remember that CLog is for losers and leave it out. Dam you Canon, I really hope you don't dare put out such a camera.

  31. I think they have a vendetta for us mate!! It would be interesting to see how many higher-end Cinema EOS sales they lost to the Sony and Panasonic mirrorless / camcorder eco-system due to not having good small b-cams with Canon LOG and minimal rolling shutter. Disabling DPAF in 4K is so weird - the 70D with Magic Lantern does RAW with DPAF - it just stays on as normal, even with a hack.

  32. I think they don't want to cannibalize their XT3 sales until next year.

  33. There is nothing anyone is (currently) doing that tempts me away from Fuji (XT3 video, XH1 stills). Towards the end of last year, I began casting glances in the direction of the Nikon Z6 and Canon EOS R and whilst both have credits, not enough. Sony. No thanks. The iii looks very capable both on paper and in reality, but I just don't feel it. The Panny S1 comes closest, but not enough...at least not yet, to make me move. And now this pair of 'B' ('C'?) cameras... Nope, not quite for the XT30, but better effort than the R.I.P. What is it with all the manufacturers? Just give us what we want, a Fuji XH2

  34. I thought it wouldn't even come out with 4k video at all and pitching it completely as a stills camera, so they overdelivered ?

  35. 10 bit Nlog is probably pretty nice in the meantime. I think you've been a fan of the Nikon image in the past right? This might be a good option for you espiecally since you are a RAW enthusiast. Not that you need anything more than your 5D3 setup.

  36. This is getting old. I don't know who to be more annoyed with, Canon or myself for expecting them to come to their senses. We should all know better by now.

  37. I would have thought it was against Intel's rules to go so far outside the spec but use the same connector. Surely a USB C chipset does not exist that is 2.0 only so it's an artificial firmware crippling limit. Oh, forgot to mention the small battery as well. As usual the rumours flattered the camera a bit too much!
    1 point
  38. Hilarious! Only Canon can find a way to give us and then proceed to cripple USB-C... I have to hand it to them, at least they have a good sense of humour over there.

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

The budget option would be to use the higher digital Olpf settings (6/20). The DD1 is solely a texture filter, sans halation. It optically makes detail 'thick' and 'smooth', whereas the normal digital aesthetic might best be described as 'anemic' and 'crisp'. For halation, I prefer Low Contrast over BPM, as it is optically true to the way that organic lenses diffuse light (BPM always looks like BPM). It will smooth falloff, at the cost of distinctly stronger diffusion than Alexa (often preferable on a film)

  40. In my experience they are basically impossible to manual focus at least if you are pulling focus for a moving shot. Focus throw is either way to long or too short. Thats with the 50mm f2, 23mm f2, 18-55mm, and 50-230mm This is pretty much standard across all brands though. I have a set of vintage lenses I use for manual focusing.

  42. For hobbyists like me, only the 10 min limit (and the lack of IBIS) is a serious problem. Could have the XT-100 lcd hinge, too. But looks like and amazing value. GX85-GX9, in the same price point, have 100Mbps 4K, more crop, much worse AF - only have IBIS as advantage.

  47. Someone should tell Picasso that his art does not accurately reflect real people. Art doesn't exist in a vacuum, it is always created and viewed in reference to previous work. Over time, film has deviated from being completely in reference to the real world, and has developed its own conventions, symbols, and nuances. New films are viewed in reference to other films, not the real world. In the same way, narrative storytelling, sound design, musical scores, and all other aspects of filmmaking are built on previous films, not just real life You seem to be implying the color should be accurate to real life unless the artist specifically wants it to be different. This implies that using color as accurate to expected film convention is the work of a "hack." I think this is false. Would you consider Max Richter's album Vivaldi Recomposed to be creative?

    Cleaning vintage lenses

One of the articles said that fungus will grow if there's humidity, the right temperature range, and a source of food. So not only do the spores get in-between the layers of glass inside the lens, but particles of food do as well! No more of those "throw flour everywhere in slow-motion" shoots people!!

  50. Yes, Nikon is one of the top choices for video (arguably the #1 choice), yet their perception is not even "mid back" but "last" (ignored alongside with Pentax etc). Nikon has a serious marketing problem, and giving us raw video from a $2K full frame mirrorless exactly what they need to do to make heads turn and finally pay attention.
