  1. I don't think that's the case at all. $2000 for the GH5 two years ago was a steal. And frankly it still is able to do stuff all in one package that no other camera can do on the market in its price range. It's really not fair to compare the A7iii to the GH5 because it can't compete with all of the GH5's features. The A7iii is a great camera but it lacks so many features of the GH5 and isn't a true alternative. If you're only going by sensor size you're missing the bigger point. The A7iii was/is a great value, but it doesn't have all of the film making features that the GH5 and no matter how big of a sensor you have, that's not gonna make up for missing them.

  2. Ok. So I fell for the Hydrogen hype. And perhaps the 2d camera module will be superb. So final judgement suspended. RED have released a screen protector for Hydrogen. It costs $40. Tax is extra (shipping to UK is rumoured to be an additional $50 but that’s irrelevant). I posted (on h4v) that the price was “interesting” (given the razer phone one fits perfectly well and cost me a fraction of the $40. For two.) Outrage. And the best defence to date is that the RED one has “high transparency”! Yes, folks, it’s see-through. I’m starting to look in the mirror and ask whether I look stupid. But once the module is released all will be wonderful and I’ll have roses growing in my drive. $40...

  6. You know, part of me wants to sell off almost everything I own and buy a GH5s, a speedbooster, a simple set of 3 vintage lenses and a Ronin. Then spend a ton of time taking color grading courses learning to grade VLog. The GH series cameras are the safest camera purchase on the market.

  7. Exactly right! @Andrew Reid assessment is wrong here. He is not looking at this camera in the big picture of Sony's product line and product strategy roadmap. Sony if offering a great camera, small with amazing AF capabilities (Sony A9 level). APS-C 4k video. It flips for doing selfies (which is I think their biggest market focus and not as much the vloggers market). It's clear that Sony is going to ratchet up product announcement from least exciting to the most exciting as the year progresses. They have said the new updated firmware for A7III/A7RIII is coming in April which might indicate the release timing of the A7Siii. The 6400 is going to be an amazing entry-level camera for any new users that wants to step up from mobile phone or P&S or debating an interchangeable lens camera vs P&S. Not long ago, a camera with this kind of AF speed and FPS would have cost $4-8K. It's now an entry-level camera. This will make the 6400 the gateway drug into Sony's ecosystem. Both Canon and Nikon are now forced to react and up their games to acquire new users. So yes, the 6400 is not a "turkey" but a good product-market strategy and Sony has given this a lot more thought than you give them credit. Both Canon's and Nikon's APS-C future mirrorless offering at the sub $1000 market will be compared against the 6400.

  8. Nikon has registered several new models with the wireless agencies worldwide, with rumours that a high-end mirrorless Z9 is due to be released this year, along with a more affordable Z5 aimed at the lower-end of the full frame market around $1200. The first affordable Nikon APS-C DSLR to shoot non-cropped Super 35mm 4K is expected to be the Nikon D5700. Read the full article

  9. On the upside, with it being a Hydrogen you will see a holographic version of yourself appearing and answering that question. I just had a look at the thread and well, yes... "......If you look at high end screen protectors from other places, who don’t necessarily make them for the Hydrogen One, (I’m thinking of a certain Brand, beginning with, D, but I, “can’t seem to remember their name”,) they’re not that much less, and probably don’t have all of the features." A brand that begins with D and wants to get away with charging you $40 for a piece of plastic and $50 shipping you say? Erm.....Dior? Daimler? Dolce & Gabbana

  11. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the a6400 is going to have annimal eye af. It should have the real-time tracking improvement out of the box, and the a9 is supposed to get that in April, but unfortunately it doesn't appear like the a7 III nor the a7R III will have that real time tracking. The a6400 isn't a new version of the a6500 (which has IBIS). It is an update to the a6000 / a5100 / a6300 that is (not surprisingly) geared primarily to stills shooters. The launch price of the a6400 is LESS than that of the a6300 (which, again, didn't have IBIS). Despite some bozo in Sony marketing saying it is an ideal vlogging camera, it quite obviously is not. On the other hand, there are a suprisingly large number of people who use their a6300 to vlog. go figure. There are a LOT of diehard fans of the a5100 (with a similar flip up screen) who take still selfies. This is probably who they REALLY had in mind. How is it a bad sensor??? I've been using my a6300 / a6500 professionally for two years now (95% stills, 5% video) and the sensor is certainly very capable. For stills it was 90% of the quality of my D750, which has a sensor that people rave about. It was good enough that I was fine with selling my D750 and all my Nikon gear. And I have never had a client complain about the quality of an image I have taken with my a6300 / a6500 cameras, so either I am a BRILLIANT photographer or the sensor is not quite the heap of fecal matter you claim it to be. (I did have one client ask me to reshoot some video footage but that was due to operator error as opposed to a "shit sensor.") Sure, there are 714 other horrible things about the a6300 / a6500 camera lines which are well documented and have been discussed, but the sensor was hardly one of them (unless you are specifically focusing on something like Rolling Shutter, which is indeed quite bad).

  14. It is not a camera meant for us. But it sure is a camera you would want to give to your wife, girlfriend, children to take Photos and Video that are actually in Focus. Who doesn't want that. And Sony is Finally doing a half decent touchscreen, Yea, and a touch screen you can use in multiple positions. I think Sony has done some head scratching and come up with a fairly cheap, small, light, reasonable solution on the low end of their market. Like it or not I bet it will be a pretty big hit for them.

There are only three skills needed to be a good colourist: To know what you like, what you want, and what is good for the project To be able to see colour - to look at an image and notice that the shadows are cooler, or the highlights have a soft rolloff, etc To know what knobs to twiddle When you have the first two, the third becomes almost a non-issue. Watching truly skilled colourists work has taught me that the top people can get 90% of the results with only a few controls - even if you only gave them lift/gamma/gain controls then they'd still put out beautiful work, add curves and they can make magic.

    Olympus EM1-X Rumor

Not much coming through the rumor site but today someone posted in the comments some of their experience at a hands-on event from 2 months ago. He specifically mentioned that the video specs were on par with the GH5S (including low-light ability). Only 7 days left until the official announcement.

  17. People can LOL all they want but I think it really takes shooting & working with the EOS R footage to appreciate it.. or not. But until then, a spec sheet isn't going to give you the full picture. And again as part of an ecosystem it makes total sense. We shoot Sony at work and personally, I'm not at all a fan of matching my Canon gear with the A7III etc.. I'd rather rent an FS5/7. And even then its a bit annoying because Sony keep changing their colour science. Canon has done so too but at least gives you the option on EOS R to choose in between original C100/C300 log & the newer C200/C300II log colour matrix. Its little details like that which make life easier. I hate losing time in post with that type of stuff..

  19. Its a great stills camera if you don't mind the color. I am talking video. Apparently over the course of three cameras they haven't improved at all. Not sure if its the sensor or Sony just doesn't care but either way its shitty. You have a choice between soft moire filled 1080p or Jello 4k. The 4k is great quality super detailed image good dynamic range. However the jello is really terrible. Plus I like to use 60p a lot and the HD is just bad. If the sensor cripples 4k at 39ms RS, why even bother. Then keeping it on over three cameras just makes it ever more irritating. The XT2 seemed to have a similar sensor, ignoring color the detail and low light performance was very similar, yet the rolling shutter and 1080p was quite good. Why couldn't Sony do it right? Anyways I am not saying you can't make good content with it. I am just hating on the camera, because it pisses me off. The A7III, A7S, and A7RIII were fantastic though.

  20. Of course! The 6400 is not the camera for someone like you. But it doesn't make it a "turkey". It's like a car person saying VW Golf is a turkey because it's not a Porsche. VW sells a lot of Golfs even if they're just front-wheel drive that understeer and are not as much fun for people who love rear-wheel drive cars. That said, I don't love Sony cameras and that's probably what you're referring to. They're good gadget but never feel like a tool you want to use. I have the 6000 and the A7Riii. I'm glad the 6400 kept the old battery and stay true to its size. I think sony understands this market segment well. They are delivering everything a newcomer would want and more. Most importantly you want the camera to work. What that means is, that it takes good videos or photos. Most people people would not care about bit depth, etc. What they want is photos or videos that are in focus. Secondly they want it to work where a phone would not work, like in dark situations etc. This is what this camera is optimize to do. A small little wonder that you can use to take selfies, low light photos and videos and the AF is so good that you're 95% guaranteed to take a photo or video that looks decent. Sony will acquire more new users and some of them might ultimately invest more into the ecosystem of Sony. It's a market win for them.

  23. I experienced a lot worse with my Z 6 than he did and yes it does hunt but mine is just piss poor. And I did my test in 1080 24p not even 4k! The AF-F with mine didn't work most of the time. I had to use the back button AF to get it to focus. I will not use mine either with AF and Nlog, but comparing mine to his AF performance with Nlog and 10bit, it looks like his is almost usable. I guess I could have added that it does hunt a little. I have had the A7III for 2 months and used the Canon 5D IV for a week so I have some reference in term of AF performance from other competitors to compare the Z 6 with.

    C200 vs C100 MKII

I agree. I think the C200 is grossly overpriced. Im don't see $4000 of image improvement between the 2 cameras. The C200 should be priced around $3499 and the C100MK down to $1499. Im curious now how the 10bit 4k image from the EOS R compares with the C200 image in raw.

  33. Over the past few weeks I have spent a lot of time with the Canon EOS R. I have also spent a lot of time with Nikons new Z6. On paper the Nikon Z6 would appear to have the EOS R beat dead to rights. And in all fairness to the Nikon, the 4k output from the Z6 is more detailed, sharper and cleaner at higher ISO than what the Canon can manage. So case closed then... an easy win for the Nikon, Canon fanboys go home! Well, not so fast... the problem is that for all of these specs, when viewed side by side... the exact same scene shot on the Canon EOS R just seems more organic. More filmic... in all honesty, it feels more cinematic. Most here know that I have long praised the Nikon for its strengths... and rightly so. It's one hell of a camera. But when looking at the same scene, shot on both the Nikon and Canon, I can tell you, there is something magical about the Canon footage. I caught myself constantly trying to make the Nikon footage more like the EOS R. I thought softening a sharp image would be a simple matter of adding in a diffusion filter. But in practice nothing I did could duplicate the effortless organic vibe of the Canon. It's not the sharpest, but it is clear and in focus; softer by default, and frankly in a world filled with over-sharpened footage I find it refreshing. The color out of the EOS R look great. You need do very little if anything to the files. But if you shoot in C-Log, there is ample data to play with. Better yet if you output to the Ninja V in 10 bit. While it might not make sense... and you would be right to argue that the Nikon is superior... none of that changes the fact that the Canon produces a nicer image. Even when it gets noisy the noise looks more like film grain than noise. Between the two, both are fairly easy to use, granted, there is a learning curve if switching from one brand to the other. But nothing that bad. I find the Canon's menus to be better, but that might be just because I am use to Canon. I will say that the Canon's controls are arranged to be easier to use from in front of the camera. The flippy screen is also a big plus. The crop did bother me at first, but I don't favor wide shots so it was not a deal breaker, and for those times that call for more FOV, I can easily adapt one of my wide angle lenses. In the end you have a choice to make... Go with the spec sheet, and get a superior camera; or pick the one that delivers more cinematic footage. For me the choice was difficult until I stepped back and looked at the output from both cameras. Once I did that the choice was clear. Canon wins again. I'm not sure how they managed it. But perhaps that's part of the magic.

  36. The GH5's AF has really, really improved since the last firmware. Even Sony / Canon users have taken note: A big part of working with the G85's auto focus is learning how it acts, since it's not perfect. Once you kinda figure it out you get better results. You really though don't even need to do that for most vlogging work. Set it up, connect your phone, touch your face to focus and you're really good to go. I don't know if vloggers just don't understand how easy it is with the phone app, given how crappy the Sony phone apps are, but I'm able to do this during shoots with the Panasonic app while across the room working on something else.

So, I took a drive yesterday in the cold to do a test of a few lenses... the Nikkor 24mm f/2 vs the Carl Zeiss 25mm f/2.8 in the Rollei QBM mount. Here are the results... Nikkor 24mm f/2 Carl Zeiss 25mm f/2.8 I found the speed of the Nikkor to be pretty helpful considering that that shot was taken about 10 minutes after the Zeiss shot, but there is just something about that cold Zeiss look that has a definite pop to it that seems more cinematic... maybe it's in my head? Full disclosure... I didn't attempt to match these images, I just did a basic Rec709 conversion and a little bit of curves and saturation. Also I am still using my MacBook Air screen for all of this preliminary color work and lens tests. I'm in the process of deciding on a monitor upgrade... so these may look like crap compared to what I am seeing in Resolve... oh the fun of hobbyist color work... lol.

  40. G85 Autofocus sucks (it sucks on GH5 as well, I have one). EOSm50 DPAF is a game changer for vloggers, my partner couldn't give a toss about 4K (or IQ much in general), she just wants reliable AF and a file she can edit on a regular laptop computer (same as most other vloggers out there). For the reccord I would never buy an EOSm50 as my sole camera, but I'm not a vlogger . Most regular people don't vlog in 4K (even Casey doesn't anymore). EOSm50 autofocus in 1080p is amazing. Vloggers want reliable autofocus unfortunately. I'd agree a G85 is a much nicer camera otherwise, but it's falls short in the one key feature in which most vloggers care about most. p.s. Also if you've ever used an m50 you'd see how intuitive and helpful it is to use for people who aren't super into cameras. The scene specific timelapse modes is also a great touch.

  41. I think they're going to get a lot of flack for positioning their first full frame cameras as being directed towards photographers. Though I think this will change with time, I do wonder if there are tech limitations preventing them from focusing more on video. I'm quite happy with the GH5 and think Panasonic will continue to innovate as they have for the last couple of years. I think the sensor size is what has made that possible. The problem Panasonic will have is if / when the competitors can close the gap with their full frame capabilities. Take away Panasonic's advantage there and they're in a very bad position. Those 2 year old GH5 specs would've looked a lot less incredible if Sony or someone had been able to match them within a year. Instead though what we have is an inedible camera that's 2 years old and is still able to do a lot their competitors haven't been able to do and is arguably still the best camera on the market for its price range.

  42. +1 for what @mercer said. I played with ML on my 700D and found the workflow with MLVApp to be quite straight-forward. But.. ML isn't for everyone. Some things to consider are: ML isn't one thing. It's a modular software system with different versions across different camera models. Each of those versions can contain features that are fully-tested and bullet-proof, but may also have features that are cutting-edge with limited testing or even bleeding-edge with zero testing. Depending on what features you use, there may be risks of errors or bugs, or in the bleeding-edge stuff, potentially crashes and loss of footage. There has been some buzz around ML killing SD cards or other hardware, but the reality is that this has happened in very few instances and isn't really something you should be concerned about. The higher-resolution RAW functionality is still quite new, although lower resolutions are pretty well developed now, so there's the risk of bugs. There is no manual, and it's pretty technical. In most companies you have product development teams who work out what customers want, and designers who will tell the developers how to make things easy to use, and support teams who deal with customer enquiries and write manuals. ML only has developers, and forums. On the forums there are users who help each-other and developers who answer questions when they get time, but if you're in the threads about the cutting-edge or bleeding edge stuff, you'll find that a large percentage of the conversation is developers speaking in machine code to each other. You can ask questions and sometimes you'll get answers, but sometimes you won't and maybe searching will help but maybe it won't. It moves pretty fast. Certainly faster than the third-party resources such as YT videos or blog posts can keep up with. Often if you're looking for help with something you will find a how-to and you'll follow it through but get to a point where it no longer works because they changed something and the tutorial uses a menu option that doesn't exist anymore or whatever. You have to kind of work things out for yourself sometimes. I love ML, I think it's great and I wish them every success. But it is a very different experience to the standard firmware that comes in any consumer camera.

    C200 vs C100 MKII

I have expressed multiple times here that C200 is in reality a glorified, and overpriced, C100. I have used the 2 cameras extensively, and the C200 is half a step ahead C100, while we wished for it to be 2. If you do not care much about 4K and raw, then the C100mkII is one of the friendliest and straight forward cameras in the industry. If you want/need broadcast codecs and "advanced"(=which are the norn for most manufacturers) features then even the JVC LS300 delivers, for a 3000$ price tag and the ability to shoot brodcast quality 4K/60p (with an Atomos), and you can get FS5ii raw/Ursa mini Pro for cheap, and EVA for less cheap!

  47. Ah but the thing is that if Sony has a button that is 1mm out of place for most people that makes it unuseable while Canon (and Nikon) could make a camera that only takes a picture every second time you push the button and that would be neither here nor there! Just merging your two recent threads a bit.

  48. Well, it doesn't balance out the box, you need to add weights, but that's not a huge issue. I made a weight by taping things to the arm until it balanced, weight it all and then went to the hardware store and bought the smallest, thing I could that weighed around the same. Now I just use velcro to put it on quickly and easily. Works like a charm and it's actually easier to fine tune the balance as you can move it up and down the arm. For me, this is a great solution and I don't mind at all. Others might find it a turn off. Once it's balanced, it's great fun to use, and so far I've always been happy with the results. The rest is all personal preferences. For example, the Sigma 18-35 1.4 is a long and heavy lens. To centre the weight of the camera, you have to move it so far back on the mounting plate that it ends up on the back motor. So you can't use this set up despite it being within the weight limits. That's a shame. But the fact the gimbal is small enough for that to happen is a big reason for many people to buy it. It fits in my bag without a problem. So if you want to use long heavy lenses, you're going to be disappointed. If you're using short or light though, it's fantastic. My favourite so far to use is the nifty fifty, but due to its field of view, it's more susceptible to showing shakes than a 10mm lens would. I'm not a fan of those ultra wide shots, and the shakes I'm getting don't seem to be too distracting. Perhaps the Sigma 30mm is a happy medium, but it's also makes the light gimbal and the light camera heavy on the arms. Again, this all depends on what you want out of the gimbal. As for wobble. I'll let you judge that for yourself. For me, it's more than acceptable, especially if you're filming slowmo or adding a touch of stabilisation in post. This clip was shot at 48fps in DCI ProRes LT with the 50mm at f4. The first half is played at 24fps and then after is the same edit played back in real time (real time at 2:09). I'm filming an event this weekend solely with the P4k, and plan on using the gimbal for close to all of my Broll shots. Due to the how it'll be distributed, I will be shooting slowmotion, but will try to chop and change between 30 and 50mm to get a nice, fair comparison of the two. If I can I'll upload some of the footage, but either way I'll report back on how it was to work with for an extended period.
