  1. I put together a Interview Lighting kit that fits all into a backpack including 3 light stands, batteries, chargers and umbrellas. Got to test it out Saturday night and its perfect for interviews when traveling and I believe everything should be safe to carry on a plane. The new Aputure Amaran AL-F7 on camera LED light' have a very good energy efficiency when set at 55k color temperature and along with the GH5S and A7S Mk ii low light capabilities got me thinking about making a very useful scaled down lighting kit for travel. I am using 4x Aputure Amaran AL-F7 LEDs with batteries. Each NP970 battery is getting little over 2.5hrs on a full charge. I have 10 in the kit giving me at least 5hrs of battery life plus 2 extra when running all 4 lights at 100%. In the images below I have some screen grabs from the interview I did last Saturday. I got with my GH5S with the Metabones Speed Booster F2 at ISO 400 with V-Log. The close up shot was with the A7S MK II at ISO 2000 with F2.8 while being 1 stop over exposed for SLog. I did a lot of looking around and for diffusing the key and fill and the best thing for being fast and compact enough to fit with in the backpack were Westcott Collapsible umbrella. So even though I own a lot of lighting and grip gear I can find myself using this very often. Air Travel would be a big one. Cramped spaces like offices or small living rooms for interviews. But also when I do documentaries sometimes the subject being interviewed can be intimated by lots of lighting and grip gear. This would give me the freedom to make the subject feel comfortable. The kit with everything in the list below was $1050. Let me know what you think, if you have any questions or suggestions for improvements. Here is the list of everything in the kit: 4X Aputure Amaran AL-F7 On-Camera Variable Color LED Light (3200 to 9500K) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1400467-REG/aputure_amaran_al_f7_on_camera_led.html?sts=pi Lowepro S&F Transport Duffle Backpack (only backpack under 100 that fit the length of the light stands.) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/736044-REG/Lowepro_LP36261_PAM_S_F_Transport_Duffle_Backpack.html 3x Kupo Handy Stand (7.4') https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/840712-REG/Kupo_KS041011_Steel_Baby_Boom.html?sts=pi 2x Westcott Optical White Satin Diffusion Umbrella collapsible (43") https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/63314-REG/Westcott_2001_Collapsible_Umbrella_Optical.html Westcott 43" White Umbrella, Collapsible https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/501164-REG/Westcott_2011_43_White_Umbrella_Collapsible.html BUBM Electronic Organizer Travel Gear Bag(3pcs/Set/L,M,S), Cord Organizer(Black) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075Q58KCT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 5x Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack) and Charger NP-F970 (10 all together) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FPZY0BK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 3x NP-F970 USB Dual Digital Battery Charger https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GPEREXU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02__o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ChromLives Dual Flash Bracket Hot Shoe Speedlight Stand Umbrella Holder (Used this to double the LED panels as the key light) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FYF8GXV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ChromLives Flash Bracket Hot Shoe Speedlight Stand Umbrella Holder 2 Pack https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07317T52Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 3-Pack 3-Outlet Grounded Power Cube Wall Tap https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LY5WZVT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03__o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 AmazonBasics 6-Outlet Surge Protector Power Strip https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TP1C51M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00__o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Very much enjoyed the look of the Canon CN-Es (same glass as the Ls with better QC, coatings, and housings) on Helium for a recent short I gaffed. Attempted a more raw, naturalistic feeling look than I generally do, and I'm pretty happy with the results. Grabs are from ungraded Rec.709 proxies.

  3. +1 for what @mercer said. I played with ML on my 700D and found the workflow with MLVApp to be quite straight-forward. But.. ML isn't for everyone. Some things to consider are: ML isn't one thing. It's a modular software system with different versions across different camera models. Each of those versions can contain features that are fully-tested and bullet-proof, but may also have features that are cutting-edge with limited testing or even bleeding-edge with zero testing. Depending on what features you use, there may be risks of errors or bugs, or in the bleeding-edge stuff, potentially crashes and loss of footage. There has been some buzz around ML killing SD cards or other hardware, but the reality is that this has happened in very few instances and isn't really something you should be concerned about. The higher-resolution RAW functionality is still quite new, although lower resolutions are pretty well developed now, so there's the risk of bugs. There is no manual, and it's pretty technical. In most companies you have product development teams who work out what customers want, and designers who will tell the developers how to make things easy to use, and support teams who deal with customer enquiries and write manuals. ML only has developers, and forums. On the forums there are users who help each-other and developers who answer questions when they get time, but if you're in the threads about the cutting-edge or bleeding edge stuff, you'll find that a large percentage of the conversation is developers speaking in machine code to each other. You can ask questions and sometimes you'll get answers, but sometimes you won't and maybe searching will help but maybe it won't. It moves pretty fast. Certainly faster than the third-party resources such as YT videos or blog posts can keep up with. Often if you're looking for help with something you will find a how-to and you'll follow it through but get to a point where it no longer works because they changed something and the tutorial uses a menu option that doesn't exist anymore or whatever. You have to kind of work things out for yourself sometimes. I love ML, I think it's great and I wish them every success. But it is a very different experience to the standard firmware that comes in any consumer camera.

    M43 not dead Panasonic S1

It's funny how people talk about the GH5, and GH5S and P4K in similar terms, to me the GH5 is in a different class of cameras because it has IBIS. It might seem to be just another spec, but for anyone who needs to get usable hand-held shots it's practically the king. That's why I bought one over the A7III, P4K, GH5S, EOS-R, Fuji XH-1, etc. If I'd not needed IBIS then I would have been ordering the P4K like a shot. The 'look' of high-quality older cameras is an interesting thing, and I know that @mercer and @webrunner5 have an eye for it. I think I do as well, having ranked the cameras in the 2012 Zacuto Camera Challenge in descending order of price as a blind test, but I'm not sure what part of the look it is that I'm attuned to. I suspect that one aspect people often get attached to is that it doesn't look as real as modern cameras. I've noticed that modern cameras and modern TVs look more real somehow, and to my eyes that hasn't been a good thing. Watching TV soaps on the odd occasion I visit someone and the TV is on I am struck by how much it looks like normal people in a room rather than TV stars in a fictional world. When previously you might have watched a show you're not familiar with for five minutes and come away with questions about the story or characters, now I'm left with impressions about how makeup needs to improve and the whole thing looks like a home video despite being shot professionally. I suspect that this comparison to how cinema used to look is simply one that younger generations just don't have, so they can't be using it as their benchmark. I once read an article saying that the music you listen to at 14 years old is the music that you will like forever because at that age your stage of development and hormones and whatever make the things in your life at that time kind of baked-in, so they stay with you. If you were 14 and mostly watching TV at home and going to the movies in a digital projection setup with THX everything, then that surreal and magical aesthetic of film just wouldn't be in your experience. In terms of 10-bit or more workflows, look to the ML thread. I shot test clips at 10, 12 and 14 bit RAW and compared them and decided that I could barely tell the difference between 10 and 12 bits. ML aficionados with an eye for colour claimed 14-bits was the way to go, but acknowledged that 12-bits was almost as good and that shooting 14 was mostly because it was there and didn't cost them anything. The difference between 8-bit from my XC10 and 10-bit from my GH5 is huge, 10-bit RAW would be better again due to the lack of compression, but I think 12-bit RAW or 14-bit RAW really aren't going to excite many people in a practical kind of way. Lastly, @thebrothersthre3 the reputation of MFT matters to Panasonic. If they don't reassure their MFT customers, the uncertainty might lead to some people switch to FF that would have stayed in MFT, which then would mean less customers for the GH6, devaluing the system and potentially causing a feedback loop that devalues the system. Technology devalues in camera bodies, sure, but lens systems devalue at a different rate. If you don't think that people care what their equipment is worth, have a read in the XC10 thread, and see how many people liked the camera and the image but sold it saying they couldn't keep an investment in a camera that was falling in value.

  5. As @tweak said, it’s fairly simple. I also always have transcoded everything, so even turning the MLV files to CDNG was faster than turning h.265 files to ProResLT when I owned the NX500. There is also a filing system someone developed that installs on your Mac (don’t know if there’s a Windows version) that will instantly open the MLV files as if they were CDNGs in Resolve... from that point it works like any other codec except you have full Raw control. Honestly, there is probably more online support for ML than any other camera. There’s a bunch of apps that can work with the files directly and they can even output ProRes with a LogC curve. If you’re a low budget/no budget filmmaker and are looking for a way to have FF 14bit Raw in 1080p, there is no other option and if you are patient, you can get near Alexa quality results with it. IMO. To add, there’s also a level of craft and choice involved that got lost somewhere with consumer 4K. I feel, others’ mileage may vary, that I can get distinctly different looks with ML Raw just by using different lenses. With consumer 4K cameras, I always felt that most lenses looked very similar... it was either modern lenses or vintage lenses unless you were using something really particular like a Helios or an Anamorphic on the GH series, otherwise there wasn’t much of a difference. But I will add that the workflow and storage requirements aren’t for everyone... even though with MLVFS you could literally work off the card, color correct in Resolve, and export the footage as ProRes to a hard drive to save storage space but as I said, it isn’t for everybody. If you find you really love the Sharpness and resolution of a 4K image, you will probably be disappointed but if you really like a traditional film look, it could be an option for you.

    Sony a7 III discussion

hey guys, here is a behind-the-scenes type music video I made earlier last year for my friend's band. I decided to shoot it with a mix of a Hi8 cassette camcorder and the Sony A7III with a mixture of profile settings Lenses Sony 50mm f1.8, Sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4, Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 I hoped to do more with this band but they're quite on-off with different band members coming and going

  7. The GH5 and GH5s typically give less heat and more reliable operation than the Sonys. There's also longer battery life, less rolling shutter, and more high speed frame rates combined with better data rates and codecs.

  8. I still think the smaller sensor size will be an advantage for a long time in terms of frame rates, stabilization, and size. I agree looks change with time but I also think different looks suit different projects. Say with a show like Stranger Things, which was very popular with young people, a modern look simply wouldn't work.

  9. The EOS-M is the camera that just keeps on giving. It was my first foray into ML Raw and I failed miserably with it. Soon after I tried my hand with the 50D and thought hmm. With the 5D3, I am a full convert and won’t even think of buying another camera until I see what happens with the 5D4 developments. However, somewhere in the back of my closet, I still have my EOS-M, a few batteries and a slew of SD cards just waiting to be used. This could be a fun way to cure some Mid-Winter Blues. I look forward to your update, Andrew. On another note, I almost bought your 5D Mark III 3.5K Raw guide a couple of hours ago, but I don’t know if I can go without a clean LiveView. Has there been any updates on that front?

  12. Hello guys, I just unpacked my dji ronin S, and I balanced my blackmagic pocket 4K on it. But I am having problems at keeping the camera level, If I try to lower the camera to the front, the camera with it lens first will point at the floor instead of leveling. Also when I tilt the camera backwards the camera moves up aiming at the ceiling. I want the dji ronin s to keep my camera level, and only when I crank it at +35% I want it to move up or down. What am I doing wrong. (never had this with my DJI ronin, it was automatically leveling the camera) For example I have seen guys moving their crane 5cm close to the ground and the camera was level. When I move my dji ronin S close to the floor, the camera is shooting into the floor and not straight ahead. OK never mind I just found out about the trigger button ? (So leveling is ok) What are the best settings? Thanks!

    Sony A6400

Sony A6400 is here. My point of view: Uninteresting camera, with great new AF tech. check the Sony video. The AF tracking seems incredible and they finally implemented touch AF. While I don’t care about this camera I am happy to see the A7SIII AF will be great.

  21. Weebill is a great small gimbal, but it suffers from the same issue most gimbals do - a too small cage. Couldn't someone finally come out with a light (maybe carbon fiber) version that has a larger cage. I was really close to buying weebill as I like the removable handle with quick release, and the fact it is so compact and adding 1 inch in each direction of the cage wouldn't make it much bigger. Ah....

  22. yes, it's normals as in a) you can get a color shift, especially from cheaper filters b) variable nd filters use polarisation filters and thus can influence reflections and the sky c) when you go too far and use a filter without hard stops, an X will appear due to the way those filters work. Yes, fixed nd filters offer better image quality, but you loose the flexibility. If you go for different fixed nd filters you might take a look at the xume manfrotto stuff.

  23. @zerocool22 well I think I’ve told you that your wolf Japan video is one of the videos that sold me on ML Raw. And although I’d love some 4K Raw, I’m more interested in Raw with DPAF and 1080p at 60p. How do you like the P4K? For now I’m fine with the 5D3, I may try the experimental build and see if I can get 2.5K out of her. Between that and the eos-m, my boredom should be cured while I get some writing done for my projects. I was considering looking for a used 5D4 to help with the testing but I know very little about coding and running scripts, so I’m afraid I’d efff something up and cause more problems than good. Let us know how it goes. My first attempts with ML on the eos-m, a few years ago, were maddening. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get rid of the pink dots but I hear that isn’t an issue anymore.

  25. Yes I hope that the 5D IV magic lantern gets here fast before I buy even more camera's: D I just bought the pocket 4K as well. But would replace it with the 5D IV instantly when magic lantern is working. Too bad the following of magic lantern has slimmed down greatly, and there are not many testers out there now. Buying a 5D IV without knowing for sure magic lantern is going to run on it is too much of a gamble for me. (already own ump, 6D, and pocket 4K atm, and I can probably replace them all by a 5D IV if magic lantern works)

  26. Would it also limit your ability to control practicals too? Eg, if you wanted to have a practical be a subtle thing in the background, you would only be able to overpower it to a certain degree. BUT, if you aren't competing with other lights then it makes sense to me!

  27. If you get one of the new P4Ks, be aware that have been reports of the P4K's having "issues." I am hopeful that many of these items will get better with firmware updates. The P4K on my desk *literally* freaked out while I was typing this message. I have 3 P4Ks and I still haven't decided how I feel about them. I have mine rigged up with Smallrig cages, Samsung T5 1TB drives, XLR mics, and external power (V-mount). I really like the image quality and I have even gotten used to the unusual ergonomics. But, I have experienced many glitches that make me hesitant to use the camera in production. Here are a few of the issues that I recall either having personally or seeing mentioned about the P4K: Sometimes the Samsung T5 SSD isn't recognized by the camera. Rebooting the camera without the drive connected, then connecting the drive seems to help. I haven't personally seen this issue on any of my 3 P4Ks, but I do *not* disconnect the drive while the camera is powered on. The battery indicator can vary wildly. I have seen a fully charged battery fluctuate from 7.6V down to 6.6V over the span of a few seconds. Low voltage can cause the camera to turn itself off, even while recording. This appears to happen most often with the battery that came with the camera. The Wasabi Power batteries that I bought seem to work better. I typically see 45 minutes or less on a fully charged battery. My camera has gone from 7.6V to 6.7 (34%)-6.4 (13%), sitting on my desk (just turned on, not recording) while I typed this message. I had a very hard time getting phantom power to work on one of my cameras. Even though I had a mic plugged into the camera via the XLR mini port, the option "Audio > XLR +48V - Mic" wasn't even available in the Audio menu. The XLR Phantom Power option on screen 2 of the Audio menu was greyed out and would not work. I finally managed to get it to work by doing a Factory Reset a couple of times. The first time that I did the reset, the Phantom power worked, then the option disappeared when I switched the audio to internal mics for testing. After another reset, the phantom power seems to be working properly. On at least two occasions, the camera has completely freaked out with rear display showing menu options flashing on and off (from the live view) and jumping from screen to screen in the menu. The P4K on my desk *literally* freaked out while I was typing this message (with a fully charged battery). I had been viewing my Audio settings, then I turned the menu off, going back to the live view. The camera started showing ghost images of the Channel 1 Level and Channel 2 Level meters in the middle of the live view screen. It then glitched some more and ended up on the AWB screen. After I hit cancel, it hasn't done it since. My Metabones 0.71X doesn't autofocus the Sigma 18-35. This is, of course, a Metabones issue, but I thought you would want to know. Autofocus is available, but doesn't work very well. Autofocus is slow and I have had to refocus the camera several times when it didn't focus on the item where I tapped on the screen. I shoot a lot of live events, so I must have a camera that is completely reliable. I typically use Panasonic GH5 / GH5s and they are completely reliable. I can't recall a single issue while using those cameras, although my GH5s cameras do kill batteries while they are turned off. I have also had great luck with FS5s & LS300s. I think that the P4K cameras have huge potential. Just be careful in the beginning, as you may have some early adopter issues.

  30. And yes, that’s why I said a major manufacturer to exclude BM from the equation because no matter how you look at it, it will take one model from Canon, Sony or Panasonic, even at a slightly higher price, to take the spotlight away from BM. The security of having a camera that has good battery life and an IR Cut Filter built into the stack with better ergonomics and AF and IBIS, or whatever, will go along way. Yeah I agree. The GH5 should have been priced at $1500 and the GH5s should have been $2000. Of course, I think Donal Trump once said... why charge $200 for an airplane ticket if the consumer will pay $500. Since the GH5 was a good seller, the price point may have been right. However, I don’t think they saw what was going to come out after and for the price that it did. Obviously, the P4K at $1299 is a big hit at Panasonic and the GH series because they are both aiming hard for the video market. But I think the real surprise was the X-T3. That was unprecedented with what was offered and why it is probably the camera of the year imo.
    1 point
  31. Yeah but Panasonic I think screwed themselves by charging so much for the GH5, GH5s. You have the X-T3, Z6, a7 III same price or cheaper. Really the EOS-R Should have been 2,000 bucks. What they going to come out with a GH6 for less money? I don't see how they can. I think they have boxed themselves in. Hard sell selling m4/3 cameras for FF prices in this day and age. You can still buy the Sony a7 new for 798 bucks! https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1008114-REG/sony_ilce7_b_a7_mirrorless_digital_camera.html

I believe we still have interesting things to expect from JVC. They have produced excellent camcorders in the past.

    Sharp's new 8K M43 camera

Well I did actually shoot an international match with the Leica SL a few months ago but that's another story! To be brutually honest, nothing has come along in the mirrorless realm from any of the manufacturers (including Nikon and Canon themselves) that has come close to usurping mirrored versions for sport at that level anyway so in that respect it won't be much different. For all the specs of these cameras, you know full well that I'm still going to beat that drum and say it none of it translates into them breaking that stranglehold at the sharp end. The long lens issue is an unknown until Sigma produce their roadmap as I would expect it to be them rather than Panasonic that would service that end. They have a serious back catalogue to work from though and one thing that isn't talked about much is that they have always had to reverse engineer and make tweaks to get them to work with other cameras so it will be interesting to see how much performance boost they can get when they are involved from the ground up. Having said that, I have an SD Quattro with a 30mm ART that is entirely their design from end to end and the AF on it is absolutely shit so probably not

  36. There is some interesting bits of information contained within the (lengthy) share offer prospectus for Atomos from a few months ago. Aside from them licensing an SoC to JVC for upcoming video cameras (which may mean hello LS300 MKii ?), four new products for 2019 described as 'next generation' and some interesting data about how big the market is for external recorders, which is bigger than I thought. One other thing, though, which crops up several times throughout the prospectus as a risk factor is a dispute with RED. Elsewhere in the document it states that RED are in the same dispute with another party and, whilst it might not necessarily mean its to do with ProRes RAW and REDCODE it does seem a coincidence that the date of the dispute coincides with the announcement from NAB. Hopefully it will get resolved and if it is about ProRes RAW that it won't put the brakes on the development of it and expanding it to other camera brands and models. What I regret is that two quite founded strings of argumentation, that simply accentuated two different aspects of problem, has to be finished in a such way - because of one very loose Hollywood (so honest and uncompromising place to be part of) man/character that, as seems to me, always knew and know very well what did and do and why - with interest in purpose. In the other words - I feel that my lovable Harlem shooter is enormously closer to your thoughts, life position or orientation and actual choices than mr Gun - that doesn't deserve that honor to keep the smallest hint of holding love affair with you EDIT "Everyone can see that the lovable Harlem shooter thought I was defending the amoral content of James' jokes" - oh no, I really didn't see it... if I think it is so, I'd react differently... He explicitelly said it...

  43. Well, mr Reid, I have to say that I also feel strongly (and totally friendly) that you are going too vehemently in this thread, and that you are deeply wrong about mr Kidzrevil - he wrote very politely and had coherent argumentation that doesn't at all deserved to be called idiotic or hostile... I'd say - it was not for any good: banishing such enthusiastic and devoted member that - as long as I participate at your forum - really never didn't offended anybody and always tried to contribute in the good spirit and idea of forum, actually making it so distinctively-charming immediate. And now so severe restriction and hard words... But for whom actually you stand in this case? You pretty correctly quoted that director with bad (quasi or actual )pedofilia jokes - who already miserable sprinkled himself with ash, proofing about kind of his character, but you find yourself in the position to regret about his miserable apology instead of himself... And even more... is he really such a proven "artist"? Are you really sure that he has to be good example what "art" is? Is he any near the rank of Bergman, Malick, Tarkovsky, even Fincher, P. T. Anderson? He works as an replaceable screw with some level of talent in entertainment industry and obeyed to its dictated rules, of course full of hypocrisy as every system is. Does he really obligate humanity so we have to sweep about his aborted entertainment contract of probably100000's $ which he probably will compensate on the other side of (always) both false front political wings? Simply, I think that this case and that man doesn't deserve you to risk vocabulary/attitude that indeed is not at all your immanent and truly inner - let alone addressing it to that mostly lovable Harlem shooter and his dreams due to which he exclusively was your guest (and good representative) here

  44. Wow... a couple of the most helpful and talented members (squig and kidzrevil) banned within a few days of one another for having an opinion... that’s a shame.

  46. @Andrew Reid you TRYING to berate me with child like name calling...doesn’t add validity to your statement. Doesn’t make you sound smarter neither its counterproductive to what you’re trying to achieve here by labelling me an “idiot”. Like I said, peace. Don’t stress yourself out I’ve checked out of this conversation. save that hostility for someone else who doesn’t share your sense of moral equivalency. No one is calling you a pedophile supporter you can calm down now.

  47. @Andrew Reid see the personal attack was unneccessary cause I guess both me & disney couldn’t separate the art from the artist. I will never stoop as low as you have shown you are willing to go in this thread nor do you personal attacks on myself and others change my opinion about myself or the other posters in the forum. You would think you’re on trial w/ Gunn the way you are acting right now. You don’t have to be a dick to get your point across you know ? Especially since no one called YOU a pedo sympathizer we’re just saying those kind of jokes aren’t worth defending because they are tasteless and offensive. You speak about the bar being lowered but look at your responses *shrug* peace

  48. If a person doesn't need: 5th & 6th inputs. Time code. Hirose power connection. XLR outputs. Metadata entry. USB interface. Flexible file naming. (& much more) Then yes the Tascam DR70D could be a worthy lower priced option. But those other things I mentioned are VERY handy. Some are essential even (such as TC & metadata entry) if working as a sound recordist on bit bigger productions. But if you just need the basics of a 4 ISO track recorder then the Tascam DR70D will be fine enough for now.

    Sony A6400

Similar price, both will be used by vloggers, hobbyists, students, and professionals for a variety of purposes, and both will end up in those "$1000 camera vs Arri Alexa" videos. Both have some features i like, and lack some that i find essential. Considering the price, i find a comparison between this and the p4k more apt than say a comparison between this and an a7s3, or between the p4k and an ursa mini. In both of those cases, one option is simply out of my budget. If you want to tell people which cameras can be compared, youve got a lot of internet to police.
