So, let me get this straight... A forum member (who contributes a lot to this place by the way) makes a cautionary post about having two separate failures of a camera model that many people on here may be looking to buy and the response is to criticise his work ? Are you trying to suggest he broke these cameras by virtue of taking photographs that you don't particularly like ? Have I got that right? That both of these cameras self destructed on the grounds of taste? Because if you are not suggesting that then you need to accept that your contribution to this particular thread is as irrelevant as it is mean spirited.

Jesus, what happened to keeping criticism constructive and supportive? I came to this forum hoping to find a community of likeminded film makers interested in the new possibilities of smaller, cheaper cameras, and I stayed because of the variety and frequency of discussions. This forum always seems to be more on top of new news than others. But lately it's all been about attacking other blogs and youtubers, denigrating your peers, and now giving really harsh and insensitive criticism to each other. I would never post my own work in this forum now. I wouldn't expect to receive any useful criticism from a place where there are so many thin-skinned, insecure and defensive people. Of course there are many intelligent, experienced and positive people here too, but they increasingly seem to keep their heads down these days.

And all shot on tripod, no sliders, gimbals, timelapses, drones. Haa refreshing. Good composition is still the best thing you can do.

What I don't understand is how they made that without AF and a flappy screen.

    Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Just received my BMPCC4K today . yay - (What a joy using a camera with an intuitive UI) Finally I bought a Sandisk Extreme Portable Ssd instead of the Samsung T5. (or making my own) Better price for the same config and better performance. Amazon had an offer: https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B078SWJ3CF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 To my surprise it performs quite a bit better than the announced 550MB/s read speed - In the BM speed test I got R:800+MB/s and W:700+MB/s !! (formatted in ExFat) even after a few minutes run. Recording with the ssd it delivers too. No dropped frames in any settings (raw 4k dci @ 60 fps is no problem) So solar very recommendable. I tested a few 64GB v90 sd cards as well (Lexmark and Sandisk). 4K DCI 25fps in prores (all flavours) works fine no dropped frames (in LT get 23 min recording time - in HQ 11...). Even 1080p100 works (24 min in LT) So if slowmo in 4k isn't necessary no need to spend cash on the fastest sd/cf cards (at least in PAL-land) ( in 1080p25 you get 45m in HQ and 97m in LT - pretty descent) I have been reading quite some complaints regarding the battery door. It doesn't seem flawed to me. Though the door locking mechanism can probably trick/annoy some. One have to put the locking nod back in place after closing the door. Doing that it should be just fine (not the best design but no deal breaker) Since the camera got released there has been quite a few critical voices complaining just about anything it had to offer (or missing). Having had it in my hands for a few hours I find a lot of the comments quite a bit exaggerated. Sure an articulated screen could be great in some occasions and sure the battery life depletes quite fast. But those are things one can easily work around. I know I can. I am more than confident that I will enjoy the results filming with this camera 😄

I enjoy travel photography most but I have no doubt that the only stuff I do that will stand some reasonable test of time - is the family stuff. Just finished a book of photos of my son’s first 5 years....

    Color science

Yes, I really wish it were available on the current generation of bodies. Really awesome, pro-level idea, much like what the Varicams offer with wireless CDL creation. I think we need to differentiate here between RAW stills color and encoded 8-bit video color, because there is a profound gap in workflow, results, and flexibility between the two. We also need to clarify how we are grading our files, because speed and quality differs wildly between various methods. For example, using the DaVinci color managed workflow gives you a corrected starting point with virtually no work, so all you have to do from there is tweak and do your creative grading. If you're just grading SLOG/SGamut files from scratch with levels and curves, your experience will change drastically. So for the sake of clear communication, let's be very specific when describing how we deal with our footage. Another angle to think about: ease of results matters. The Alexa is popular not only for its reliability and image quality, but for its dead simple workflow. In many cases, corporate and commercial work can make do with nothing more than Arri's r.709 LUT, with maybe a small tweak or two. THAT IS HUGE! Saving time, minimizing complexity and miscommunications between set and post (many DPs do not get to grade their own footage!), jumping straight into edit with a robust easy-to-cut codec...these are all enormous time and money savers. Compare that to RED and, while the image quality is outstanding, you have to deal with large difficult files requiring in depth knowledge of their various sensors, color spaces, gamma, etc. So when saying "you can always grade to match," keep in mind that while you often can, it takes time. It takes money. Expertise. More communication with whoever's handling your post. That is why out of camera color still matters, despite all the powerful color tools we have now.

Talking like that about the work of others on this forum with no sufficient reason happens once in a while. @DBounce I wouldnt care about the contents of comments like the one above. It lacks a valid point and emphathy as well. I like your work and contributions very much. They dont have to have Spielberg shotdesign nor Storarro colors all the time.

I am not even going to watch this one. Did he reveal his settings this time? Did he even bother to say what lenses were used? Camera is only half the story when it comes to AF in video mode. I see from the YouTube poster frame he fixed the Z7 skin tones though. Maybe not so bad after all!?
  14. 2 points
Not sure what you mean by that. I don't make a dime from photos and video, it's only something I do for fun... And last I checked cameras do not deserve people... Cameras are inanimate objects. If taking personal pictures of my family is not deserving... well you can go fuk yourself. I don't recall begging you for the $15k I dumped into the Fuji system. And for the life of me I fail to recollect you chipping in for the $30k plus for the 1DXMk2 with lenses and support gear. So to that end who cares what you think deserves what? I simply shared my personal experience and you look at it as an opportunity to launch a personal attack. Having hardware fail is not "fun" in my experience. But if you enjoy that aspect.. well, what can I say... have fun😃

My battery door is a complete mess. a slight bump, opening the sd card and cfast compartment for instance and it pops out. A bit annoying, but I've finally opted for a dummy battery, so I'll take it off anyway. I can see it becoming a problem when I'll switch to Blackmagic official power cables (66eur a pop) and will no longer need the dummy battery. I'll ask a door replacement to Blackmagic as I think mine is probably more flimsy than other people's BMPCC4K. But no big deal, I'm happy for the upgrade. I was using the NX1 before and I love that camera too. But the iso range was just too limiting. Now I have a strong camera for stills and a strong one for video. In some situations, I'll try to match the NX1, NX500 and BMPCC4K to ensure me a multicam setup in well-controlled environments. ND's are definitely a need though, sticking to iso 400 with the viltrox speedbooster and most shots are still overexposed at f/22 when sunny. Need a 3 stops ND I guess.

Ok so I decided to test once more - and I a complete idiot overly happy after waiting almost 7 month finally having this bloody camera - I forgot to change the target disk mode of the test app... aaaaegh - sorry for me misinformation about max speed. But It do works great with the BMPCC4K with 500GB available DCI 4k in raw 3:1 gives me 66min @25fps , 4:1 82 min. To get 2+ hours from 500gb I have to 'downgrade' to prores 422 (not HQ)

For video colour from the camera, the Sony liveview grading app was/is brilliant. Adds more choices in settings to the cameras than most people could possibly properly try in several years. Pity it isn't useable with the third version A7 cameras (though it is with the A6500 and A7sii).

I am guessing DBounce was being sarcastic but its hard to tell online. Nice to see some encouraging thoughts around here though. That said I am not surprised someone would drop that cash on a hobby. I used to do World War 2 reenacting, people would purchase vehicles that cost twice as much as my parents house. Because they liked it.

Adobe is an antiquated company and they operate like one. Have you ever looked at their forums in search of a solution? It's an absolute nightmare, the first response from an actual Adobe team member is generally condescending and dismissive. They have gotten fat and lazy on the subscription model which gives them a million reasons to slow progress to a drip. Why rush along updates when their entire business model is built around people continuing to pay a monthly fee? Doesn't make business sense therefore it doesn't happen. I'm pretty fed up with it myself. Will likely switch to Resolve full time soon.

FujiFilm X-T3 - Thoughts After One Month

Sorry but @androidlad is not totally wrong and your words are a bit disproportioned. While I would not allow myself to say that a "camera can or cannot deserve someone" like he did, I am a bit shocked at the quality of your outputs versus the equipment you have. No offense meant at all just my point of view. Good for you that you can spend 45 000$ on 2 camera system, but again what is the point if you get those results (stills you posted above)? You would get the same results (and could get better) with a Canon T2i. I am just a bit shocked. Anyway, you are totally free to buy what you want and do the pics you want, and I imagine I can also go fuk myself too... As far as the hardware failure is concerned, I am hopeful for Fuji that it is an isolated case, and sorry to hear it happened to you, it sucks for sure especially twice in a row. Good that you can return them for sure. For the canon, at $6000 and 1.5KG it better be reliable!

    DJI Mavic Pro II

Well, what I can tell is that from the Mavic Pro 1, my 2 has much much better overall IQ. Also it grades well, and noise level is low. I find the sharpness too soft at 0, but perfect at +1 (unhappy people above can choose +2 ..). I do not think it lacks details. Those are 1in sensor not FF so in any case it has its limitation. Also there is 0 debate for me on the P4P and this as it so much smaller and lighter I bring it everywhere. I had a P3 Pro before, no way I go back to a full backpack dedicated to a drone. No way.

I don't know exact skin tone colour of the man and the lighting, i would say the fuji must be the closest followed by the Nikon and then the Canon and Sony. Unless the light is golden hour in this case, if I was the guy I would immediately go to hospital to check if I any liver or bladder problem.

So So, colour wise, instead of turning that guy into a zombie, Z7 whitewashed him this time...
  33. 1 point
So auto focus test from Max, for me z7 is best in this test. That's so great that Nikon who was dead last is at least for me, the best now. Again for the test, many strange thing, because it is the Sony and Canon who are the greenish skintone, he did use auto white balance this time. Another thing of note is it is the Fuji which looks super soft, much softer than the Canon.

    Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

I like the user interface and how easy it is to find and select the settings you want to use. I really like the image and the motion from the camera. There seems to be less ghosting in 24 fps than I was getting with my GH5. For me, it is easier to get the image I want in camera as long as I am not in the scene. I was getting about 40 minutes per battery. 5 batteries got me through a Quinceanera gig, but I was sweating toward the end. One battery left with about 70%. Storage was a challenge. I started with ProRes HQ and ended the day in ProRes 422 and ProRes LT. The lack of a remote live view was only an issue because my friends and I had a horror movie contest for Halloween. The rules were: One person had to do everything. There could be no help. We had to write it, shoot it, act in it, edit it, and put it online. The challenge was getting the footage I needed in a timely fashion. I shot my video the morning of the deadline, put it together, and uploaded on time.

Wonderful video. I'll probably subscribe to his channel. How about this for a future trick - Project the medium format lens onto ground glass and behind that put two vertical GH5S in 4:3 side by side. One can capture the full height and half the width of the left side of the image and one can do the same but for the right side. Merge in post for 8K medium format!? Sliding the camera along like his rig was a great experiment in the lab and result was beautiful, but tricky to use for anything that moves. Oh and by the way - his vintage projector is a thing of beauty isn't it!?

Jesus, what a petty and defensive responsive to someone being understandably wary of a brand after getting two duds in a row.
  37. 1 point
I totally understand. Even if it was just two lemons a thing like this just puts a strain on the trust in the camera. For casual use I can live with quirkiness but for work I need to know the gear is 100% at all times. This is why I didn't keep my a6300 or bought the a6500. I got three lemon a6300 from separate batches.. the trust is gone.

Modern marketing just straight up stinks. You're right to call it out and be highly skeptical and critical. FWIW, I've personally been using Premiere since 1991 so I have a history with the product. But I've not used it exclusively. Avid, Media100, FinalCut, and Resolve have all been part of my career. WTH, I actually did non linear editing on a ridiculous Amiga Video Toaster product back in the day. Yikes. Still, if we're talking about a "stable" PP, I'd certainly be interested in a highly specific and optimized premiere "PROFESSIONAL WORKSTATION" version. Charge me a flat rate for it, offer tech support, and call it a day. Make a non-bloated PP version that demands an exact itemized list of PC hardware components so they can tightly troubleshoot it and keep it working smooth. Heck, partner with HP and sell 1 single machine if you have to! --Also have software updates that are never released half-baked. Have it be so ridiculously exclusive it's built on their own tightly controlled version of LINUX. Whatever works! Just strip the code down. Hit the reset button and make a solid lean and mean beast of an editing platform. Personally, I like the PP user interface and how it does things. The legacy of that style of editing appeals to me. However, I'm not enamored that the app always feels like it's about to rattle loose and somehow smash into a wall. Adobe is making ridiculous money right now. They could easily afford to develop a special editing machine workstation that's also loss-leader product. Even if they sold zero units to regular consumers it would stand a a shining example of their commitment to the product and to the industry. Meanwhile, get this new hypothetical killer product into film studios and ad agencies and THEN bang the drum how awesome it is for professional work. For those that actually use it, it would be akin to owning a luxury car that everyone admires, while regular people drive around in a base model sedan. A car model that's the pinnacle of engineering and style typically doesn't make profits for a car company, but it increases the prestige of the brand. That said, none of what I just outlined will ever happen. That's not the world we live in. Unless Adobe considered such a product worthy of just being a form of advertising, they'd never do it.

Maybe you can help bring some light to my original question. Imo Sony are the once that doesn't match the Canon specs at the same price. Which is ok, we all have different preferences. But you won't see me accusing people who like the A7iii to be apologists, fanboys, etc. I just figure they are willing to live with a camera crippled in some respects because its excelling in others. In the very same way that a Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, BMD user would. But my observation that I find weird is that its trendy to bash Canon reviews, canon marketing trips (ignoring Sonys) and in some instances Canon users.. Why do you think that is? (Im not saying you are doing all of these things, Im just asking since you seem to feel strongly about the subject.) My theory is because its big and mainstream. Exactly, but why does it seem so brand dependent?

So it's been a little over a month since I purchased my first FujiFilm X-T3 body. About two weeks after purchasing the first body I became convinced that this camera was very special. It was fun to shoot with. It reignited my desire to shoot stills. When it came to video the X-T3 seemed more than capable. I decided to refine my lens collection, adding the 23mm F2, 35mm F2, 16mm F1.4 and 56mm F1.2. Later I add the magnificent MKX18-55mm T2.9. All of these lenses performed to my highest expectations. I can tell you after this short period of owning these cameras that they can capture some truly lovely images. The in camera profiles are great and very inspiring to work with. The whole experience is really quite wonderful... well, that is it was. I am getting rid of the whole system. Why? Well, the second body decided to quit. The screen froze up and would just blink. A quick call to Fuji tech support revealed that the hardware had failed. I called to get a return authorization, which was granted. I decided not to go for an exchange, instead opting to wait and see how the first body held up. Today, I went out to shoot some pictures for a project we are doing. Upon arriving at the location I grabbed the X-T3 out of my bag and flipped the switch to power it on... NOTHING! Absolutely nothing. No lights, no screen lighting up, no power up at all. I tried different batteries. Still nothing. I tried pulling the battery and holding down power, then re-inserting the battery and attempting to power up again. Still nothing. Finally I tried the one thing I knew would work. This technique has never failed me.... I went home and grabbed my Canon 1DXMk2. Needless to say the shoot was completed. But the Fuji's are paper weights. I'm done with FujiFilm. It's all going back. It's packed up... I will not buy another one. In my experience they are not fit for serious use. Heck, they are not fit for even casual use. I had spoken highly of them in the past, but this experience with not one... but two bodies failing is enough for me. Lesson learned.
