  3. Look very cool on paper, If I could justify the cost, It would probably be my top pick, but full frame without autofocus is a pain if you are a solo operator, and to shoot with a lens longer than 50mm. I run a7iii+ninja V +batis , I would be curious to compare the IQ of the mavo vs my setup. I think the mavo lf is a bit like the Red raven, too cheap for big production, too expensive for small production. Speaking about the Raven I m doing the post production of a short shoot on it, colors are nice but I m not impressed by the noise performance/DR, it s hard to justify the price of it.

  6. From me ? I haven't really spent enough time with it to say anything even remotely definitive about it. What I will say from a positive perspective is that I really like the menu system, I think they've made really good choices with the physical controls and them including false colour (especially when you have it switchable on the function key) offsets the uncertainty one might have about setting accurate exposure on a less than ideal screen and without an EVF. It is not without its quirks though but I'll need to test it a lot more to understand their impact or whether some of them are just me being stupid

  7. Flickr may now turn into a viable alternative. A couple of days ago the announced a revamp... https://www.flickr.com/ ...following on from the acquisition by Smugmug... A 'pro' account is US$49 a year with unlimited uploads. From 'early 2019' video playback will be increased from a maximum of 3 minutes to a maximum of 10 minutes....

  8. For lowlight, these results are pretty much as expected The A7iii is full frame supersampled from 6k to 4k, the BMPCC is M43 (-2 stops), EOS-R FF sensor heavily cropped (-2 stops), XT-3 APSC (-1 stop) and the Z7 is high resolution sensor with pixel binning (a comparison with a Z6 would be fairer.)

    Vimeo alternatives

Due to a couple of old DMCA claims against my Vimeo account from 2016 and older, they are terminating my account if another one is made. As these are quite common and often made in error, I no longer consider Vimeo a secure place for my channel and EOSHD embeds. I am looking for alternative pay-monthly video hosting sites to replace Vimeo. Must have no ads obviously! Support for smooth 4K playback and original file downloads. Any suggestions? Is there a way to pay for a YouTube account upgrade for my videos on there, so that the user experience is better for viewers regardless of what YouTube account they have? No ads is a must.

  13. Two things, the negative and the positive, first I'll go through the negative and then the positive, The Negative I'd like to apologize for my behavior on this website. I have a spare EOSHD account and found my name on google and still attached to this website. I looked at the email message and found out it was about caps lock on the lenses section of this website years ago. I should have not used caps lock and also I should not have shouted at everyone on this website. I'd like to return because I have made some discoveries, and I enjoy being around very bright and intelligent along with extremely practical and very informative folks like yourself. May I please be allowed back on this website and blog and comment and speak to other people? And it has been an honor for me to speak to you all on this website. I apologize and wish to undo anything that can lead to me being banned again. I will try my best to not act defensive and not to take things personally. I apologize to the moderator Jon Pais for being rude. I would also like to if I graduate from Film School, have employment from a master's degree and college with my computer science degree as well as my bachelor's in theater with photography as a minor. The Positive I have taken a photography class at college and passed it with a D, unfortunately I didn't know how to use my DSLR creatively, but I passed. I know now how to use lighting better. I am almost done with having an associate's degree in college. I am taking proper medication for my hyperactiveness and mood swings and I've been through therapy as well. I also have been discussing a lot about filmmaking on the other site, Reddit under the alias, Zack194a on the filmmakers part of Reddit. I think I'm getting a good idea on how to use lighting for video, and I took some recent photographs I have taken with my T2i after learning from Photography class. I learned new things like metering and sunny 15 rule as well as light distance (distance from light affects the image). My college major at this moment is computer science, which as I searched up I hope will get me jobs at many places. I am taking 4 courses in community college at this moment and two of them are A's and the other two are B's. Thank you for reading this. My previous account is Zach Goodwin Here are some of the photos I have taken They were taken on a Canon T2i with an FD lens: 35-105mm, F/3.5 :

  15. I'm just not sure, the blackmagics are way cheaper, the c200 a bit cheaper and the reds at the opposite side with redraw and a well established system. I would love a play with one especially alongside a cheaper and more expensive option to see how it fits but I'd be more likely to get a pocket 4k to go along my fujis. If I was doing a feature film anytime soon I'd look hard at Red Gemini I think. I like that a more established model has more community and range of luts around it.

  16. There are, but then you need to double focus. Firstly, your taking lens, then the anamorphic lens. It's quite a pain in the long run. Their next FVD batch is due by the end of November. Not sure about their fb page, but their own website works good.

Resolve has different needs than premiere, photoshop, and lightroom, so a computer that does well for those programs might not be optimized for tackling resolve. Likewise, a simple gaming computer might not be best for editing 4K. You are going to want SSDs as pointed out above. Resolve benefits well from good graphics cards. I might go on to the black magic resolve forum and find out what is recommended.

  18. Indeed looks like A7iii is better in low light but from comparisons (with light lol) , skin color and sharpness looks better on the EOS R. I dont own any of those cameras, just based on clips from these guys: .

  19. I'm not quite sure what to think of them, to be honest. If they cost 100-200$, then I'd say go for it, but they're usually listed for at least 400$. At this price point, I'd prefer buying FVD16A from Rapido which sells for 550$.

How about diversifying this post to Best Editing Pcs at various price points: 1. $1000 2. $2000 3. $3000 4. $5000 5. $10000 Anyone wanting to spend more than $10k on an editing PC should probably just use services of companies like Prime Focus or some high end post processing and management agency.

  21. It does do the same but the mitigation there is that it has a thumbnail substitution system to let you know there is a clip there but that it won't play it either because its corrupt (which it shows as a question mark) or that you need to switch formats (the landscape in a film strip icon). That would solve the problem for BM too rather than hiding the clip entirely, which is very disconcerting even when you've had a camera with a similar playback situation like the LS300 let alone anyone coming from a hybrid With the LS300, I use the A slot SD card for 4K and the B slot one for HD which also helps to sharpen my addled mind and I'm going to replicate that approach with the Pocket4K and use the SD card for 120fps. With the LS300 of course, the reboot between changing formats also helps reinforce it whereas the instant change when doing the same with the Pocket4K lulled me into a false sense of security ! Ideally, BM will offer an option to automatically change format on playback with it then reverting back to the mode it was in when you exit but LS300 style thumbnails would suffice for now.

  22. My main issue with using Dropbox is that the quality is horrible when you watch it directly through a shared link. Everyone can download the original file, but when most viewers end up just watching the preview, that's a real drawback. If anyone knows a way to enable high-quality previews or embedded video from Dropbox, that would be appreciated.

  24. Thank you for the info, that makes complete sense now. Seems Sony is one of the more accurate ones. I wonder if they are consistent across all cameras though.

  25. Nope the reason was touched upon in Max's video. There is no hard defined definition of ISO. All camera manufacturers 'understate' their ISO. So take a look at this chart from DXOmark for the A7riii... https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Sony/A7R-III---Measurements You will see that what 'Sony' calls iso 200, is measured at iso 145 by DXOmark. Why do they do this? Well so people will say - very little noise at iso3200 - partly because the actual iso is 1600. You can go back and look at Canon 5D bodies and you will see the differential between real and Canon's iso has increased with every generation. Why? So that people can say 'at 6400 there is a half stop improvement over the old body' when it is more like a 1/4 of a stop and a 1/4 additional stop iso fudge. When you do a comparison like Max's that uses 'same settings' - shutter speed, f stop, iso - greater amounts of 'iso fudge' end up as 'lower exposure'. As a general rule, smaller sensor cameras tend to 'fudge' their iso more than FF cameras. Take the Olympus EM1 for an example.... https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Olympus/OM-D-E-M1-Mark-II---Measurements Iso stated by Olympus is iso200 while DXOmark's measured ISO is 83. So Olympus has fudged the ISO well over 1 stop and almost I stop more than the Sony.

  28. You beat me to it Andrew, I was thinking of starting a thread on leaving VIMEO, after 164 video uploads being a paid member since 2011 they send me dmca notices and some threatening messages of this type: > " You have 5 minutes to download your video due to a copyright strike" sent in the dead of night I am in Greece by the way 7 hours time difference from NY. >If you do not wish to contest the strikes but are seeking access to your other videos, we are able to place your account into Temporary Access Mode. This will restore your account in a limited capacity for 72 hours so that you are able archive your videos. However, there are a few caveats: 1) You may only be granted access if you are not filing a formal counter-notification regarding the strikes on your account. 2) We can only provide 72 hours of access. Since this is automated, we cannot extend the access period. Any content that wasn’t downloaded may be lost. 3) The videos will be restored with a restricted privacy setting. They will be locked and only available to you for archival purposes. They will not be publicly available. 4) Per our repeat infringement policy, you may not open any additional Vimeo accounts So for 3 songs that were in some ancient videos long forgotten not embedded anywhere, one of them Private, they actually HOLD HOSTAGE another 160 videos,.I talked to them and they had the courtesy to allow me to download them over a week but i have to sign off any rights over that..i have left the account in Limbo What I see is that they are driving out all the small creators that used to be the paying backbone of Vimeo, they killed the FORUM where voices of members were heard and they are turning VIMEO into a stock footage video gallery (eeeeek). In the meantime WISTIA is way expensive 100 bucks per month, youtube is a temporary solution..

We could use some of that oldschool community back (a lot either got banned or decided to stay away on their own). What ever happened with that one exotic lens?

  31. Although DuetDisplay is primarily pitched at using your iPad (or iPhone) as an extension monitor to your Mac, it can actually be used as the primary monitor to do what you are after. There was an issue with one of the more recent OSX updates that stopped it working but I believe they have updated it recently to resolve it. https://www.duetdisplay.com/#

  35. Hey Andrew ! I made a review of the camera ! I tried to stay impartial and to put as much footage as possible in it and not just filming myself just talking about the camera. That's actually what made me do this review in the first place. I can't take it anymore : people talking about something in front of a camera with no footage to show. If you have time, I'd really like to have your input on my review ! Cheers ! (I'm sorry to for the repost )

Just stop making excuses for canon not to involve or even try harder what if the EOS-R II comes out tomorrow ,and still do 4K with a crop Canon just tell everyone that some pro users did some tests and proved the IQ as good as the supersampling one, forget the fXXking supersampling , you don't need it!

  38. Well if the other tests are like the frist one... Will he compare the dynamic range from 10bit log on the fuji with 8bit internal Vivid picturestyle on the nikon? Who knows...

  39. Pixel peeping is alive and well I see! Nikon Z7 is fine. It is a miracle in full frame from 8.2K down to 4K. Very nice detail level. Very good dynamic range and colour, which Max's test doesn't even touch on. Z7 in APS-C is similar but less aliasing / stair stepping - but we are talking 4K here, so at normal viewing distances you don't even see the aliasing in full frame mode, let alone in the oversampled Super 35 mode. The EOS R is soft. So what. It's 4K. You have more detail than you'll ever need unless cropping 4x into the image. You wanna know why I don't do tests like this very much anymore? 1. Nobody views your film or music video at 400% crop. The absolute sharpness level in 4K means JACK SHIT. What you want is a soft stable cinematic image - not hard digital sharpness. In fact it's an *advantage* to have a softer image for YouTube, when the player is scaling it down to fit any number of screen resolutions - especially a 1080p screen. It looks more natural when people view it downscaled or even on a 4K TV from normal viewing distances. In the first case the downscaling works badly with a digitally sharper, harder image vs a softer, more cinematic one. In the second case the natural downscaling from the human eye at a longer viewing distance makes a less hard 4K image at 1:1 look more natural and less fatiguing than a "harder" image which shows more emphasised detail. We have plenty enough detail in 4K as it is, even on the EOS R and to overemphasise it, like in Max's video, is a BAD THING. 2. The test by Max claims to be about image quality when he's only testing one small aspect of it and not even very well. He's actually looking 90% at the sharpening levels in the menus, rather than outright performance of the image. All the cameras apply a different level of sharpening to bring out extra detail. You can dial it down or up. So what? How natural and cinematic does that fine detail look to the real viewer? That is the real question. 3. Max's video tests just one aspect of the camera and seems to imply it's 90% of what makes a good image. A wide shot of a building with constantly shifting light at dusk so that not even the lighting conditions are matched on each comparison shot. It says nothing of colour, dynamic range, skin-tones, lenses, sensor size, rolling shutter, motion cadence, codec performance, macro blocking, mud, compression, grading, bit-depth, LOG profile performance and how easy or not it is to grade. These are the things that determine the final result. These are the important things and not ONE in isolation but ALL together. Go back and do a proper test Max that takes you longer than half an hour... But no, he's got subscriber numbers and viewers to chase so it must be done quick! Why the Z7 is singled out for criticism because of Max's test is beyond my understanding. It justifies the pricing over the A7R III because it is a flat out better camera in every aspect of image quality and handling. It justifies the pricing over the D850 because it adds video AF which actually works, gets rid of the mirror, fixes the ergonomics in live-view, shaves the pounds off and at the same time maintains the incredible video quality.

  40. the thing is: if these companies, youtube for example, applied these rules to EVERYONE, fairly, the same way, at least i could say, "Well thats just how they are" but thats not the case at all!!! if i upload a video – im making one right now – with a copyrighted song that i fairly have no right to upload, it *might* be chosen for monetization by the record label, it *might* be just barred from being uploaded, deleted, who knows? this is all fun and games until they delete your ENTIRE ACCOUNT. i feel SO bad for people who have wrongly had their channels removed... all that work, all that THEY DID FOR YOUTUBE, all the views, comments, the community interaction, all that shit youtube loves – all gone. no appeal, no process to do anything. its just gone i recently went through a dmca takedown request due to an a-hole i know who stole my video, and from what ive gathered, if you have a corporate email address (yes) they take you way more seriously, if you "represent a business" they take you way more seriously, and as a lone creator, they dont give a single fuck about you (shocking) i got what i wanted because i pursued the issue, but thats emailing a robot amazingly, you get virtually the same "customer service" from vimeo, despite the fact that you have to PAY them for your account~! AMAZIN!!!!

Hi Andrew. I had the exact same issue with Vimeo this month. A BS DMCA claim and Vimeo is not answering my counter request. Even youtube which is free finally removed one of the DMCA take down after I send a counter request. This DMCA thing is such a BS, anybody can throw that at you. They hit first and never double check anything. I'm going to check Wistia.
