  1. Been too slammed to finish this, but finally able to put something together. All vanilla settings: 2.7k, 100iso, GoPro color, Sharpness low. Double mount to Handler grip. This was meant to test Hypersmooth in Hero7 Black. No audio as it is pulled from a much longer video I'm working on.

  2. It’s actually a music video for the Plain White T’s. I used the Pocket 4k and RED Gemini. Lenses were Canon FD primes, and Sigma 18-35.

  3. Thought I'd share my experience using the XT3 to film a wedding this past weekend. Lots of continuous shooting, though the camera did get warm, there was no overheating. I experienced no lock ups or errors of that nature. An issue I ran into was low light auto focus. There wasn't a ton of light at the reception venue. The room was mainly lit by small lights on the walls, and some overhead chandeliers. Neither light fixtures were very bright and the chandeliers were dimmed once the dancing started. Before the lights were dimmed the camera struggled to maintain focus at F4 without hunting quite frequently. At f2 it was fine which indicates it simply reached its limit as far as needed a certain amount of exposure. Once the lights were dimmed even at f2 it was hunting sometimes. I didn't crank the ISO beyond 6400. Maybe 12,800 would have been enough to get better exposure for auto focus. Basically this auto focus system isn't magic. It still enables me in decent lighting to get in focus shots of moving objects that I wouldn't be able to obtain by myself, especially not with longer lenses and a shallow DOF. I found the OIS on the 50-230mm lens to be great for non moving shots. I used it with a monopod(didn't get a stand for mine so its pretty unstable) and it worked great. I got to test tracking for people processing up the aisle and it was spot on. The 18-55 has great OIS as well. Easily can get handheld shots through all focal lengths that look great. My only wish for Fuji is that they'd give their primes OIS. Especially the 50mm f2. If they just did a 50mm f2 with OIS I'd be a content man.

Slight coloring tweaks with Film Convert. Hope you guys like image. I took off HCDNA to avoid vignetting. video > Make America Again

    X-T3 or Pocket 4K?

Sensor crop aside, these are F1.2 lenses, not F1.8. Crop does not mean these are somehow not what they are designed to be. Stick the Fujinon lens on a full frame camera and you would indeed see it is F1.2 not F1.8. Conversely, put one of those full frame Sony lenses on a Sony APSC sensor camera and tell me if the F1.8 is still giving the same DOF as it does on the full frame model? Now I understand that the Fujinon lenses are designed for use with APSC/S35 cameras. But this does not change the fact that it cost more to produce a true F1.2 lens than it does to produce an F1.8 lens. Bokeh: If the lemon shaped bokeh that the Sony lens puts out is good enough for you then congratulations... you can save a boat load on your lenses. Also the AF test was done with the Fuji at 400 iso vs the full frame Sony at 800? He seems to double the ISO for all of the Sony lenses look here or here ... or here for example. Hmmm? Could it be he's getting more money by referring would be chumps erh buyer to purchase Sony gear in his affiliate links? Hmmm? Hey maybe I'm confused... Sony makes an APSC lens that is F1.2? Really? Which lens is that? You say they make an F2.8 constant aperture 50-140? What was that model number again? Hmmm... that's what I thought.

  12. And in some ways the iPhone makes more sense than a low end or middle of the ground camera. I was working an event this weekend and the local Fox affiliate had a news crew there with their heavy hitters from the morning show and the event was shot with a small iPhone rig. Well, it’s a commercial for internet ads... who even listens to them?

  16. If it helps anyone, I've had a dummy battery plugged into one of these and I've left the camera recording. So far I've got 43 minutes on the card and the camera still says 7v and 2 LEDs light up on the battery. So I imagine I could get at least another 30 minutes from it, possibly even more - There's 46 minutes left on the card, so we'll see which one gets used up first. EDIT: Couple of these will easily get you (me) through the day. Interestingly, although the camera shut its self down, my recording is all there and not corrupt. Total run time is 1:09:05 The camera and card aren't even that hot, very slightly warm, I guess having the battery door off helped a little.

  17. Hi @Wild Ranger Thank you very much for your response. I also brought it to local panasonic suppport center. They replaced the sensor. The artifact is still there. But it makes me feel so much better, that having this issue in camera you managed to create great videos with it. (I found Youtube channel link in your profile). Thanks again and have a great day! Best regards, Sergio

  18. Hi Sergio, it's been a long time since i had this issue. I have send my camera to panasonic, also tested 2 more models, tried different recording modes, NTSC, PAL, etc. 4k, 6k... Nothing changed, it's there. So a came to the conclusion that it's a fixed noise pattern in the sensor, something that seems all GH5 have. It's a pity but I found it's an issue that rarely bothers, it generally appear when you underexpose too much the image, like any noise pattern. Since then I had the opportunity to work in several projects with the camera and this have never bothered my again, it's not something that appears in general use.

  19. You should probably cue the X files music in the background because I have literally just bought a used one of these lenses about an hour ago as a general purpose lens for a few different cameras and put it on the BM4K! My live report from the scene is no vignette, reports f2.5 on the short end and f4 on the long end. VC works and is surprisingly effective at the long end. No AF though either one shot or touch.

  22. Yes. Despite. Was typing on my phone and missed the incorrect autocorrect. The LCD and EVF of the A73 are rubbish compared to the others. But IQ is amazing and the gen3 bodies are really nice to work with. Plus the Tamron 28-75 is a great run and gun lens. As an overall hybrid package it’s tough to beat. Chris

Great! XT3 is indeed tempting! Been thinking between a Fuji and an A7III as a hybrid cam to pair with a GH5s. Really liking the colors and af from the Xt3 as far as the ones I see on reviews

  27. I'd definitely suggest a speedbooster to make full use of vintage lenses. Lens turbo's are great and pretty cheap too. Worth it for the extra stop of light and wider Field of view. Minolta lenses are really nice. The 35mm 1.8, 24mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, and 128mm 2.8 makes a great set. You can find all of these lenses under $200 usually (some as cheap as $60). Canon, Nikon, and Minolta are all great bets though.

  28. I think the consensus is at +1 for sharpening although some people recommend 0. I would have thought it is sensible to be fairly conservative with in camera sharpening as you can always add sharpening in post but it is more problematic to take away.

  29. The only thing Apple seem keen on you using as an input source on the iPad is your credit card number for the app store so I doubt there will be anything new beyond the usual camera control apps over WIFI like Panasonic etc. For the Pocket4K there is actually a workaround for them not having a similar app by using a Teradek Vidiu encoder or the cheap Chinese versions of it which convert HDMI from the camera into a live stream which you can then view on your iPad using VLC or a similar app. The beauty of doing it like that is that you can have more than one client connection so multiple people can monitor it if you need to distribute it around a set. The non-beauty aspect of it is that its not cheap if you use the Teradek one and somewhat clunky if you use the cheap Chinese ones. Although, as it runs on Android tablets as well, you can probably get the Teradek and a tablet for roughly the same price as the iPad I think the trick is to use the camera as a very expensive SD card reader and connect via USB

  30. I cannot tell you how much I'm looking forward to seeing this. I absolutely love a 80s film look. What lenses did you use ?
    1 point
  31. Give it a price reduction in the near future and will become very relevant to us. (or at least some of us) Thus it is worthwhile keeping an eye on its progress! If you know anything about software development you know then you can spend an almost infinite amount of timing fixing bugs on complex projects. Thus I'm glad to see Z Cam still supporting their older products.

  32. According to the comparison between free and pro versions, hevc is not supposed to be supported at all in the free version. So i think the "proper" solution is to get the studio version, unfortunately. You can find it very cheap on ebay if you absolutely need it.

  35. Well, these seem like some better "real world" tests pitting the EOS R against the a7 III, and my opinion is that the EOS R comes out ahead in "picture quality" (of course, they weren't using EOSHD Pro Color on the a7 III, which probably would have helped the a7 III fair a bit better in terms of colors and rolloff, I am guessing). Sharpness Test (4K and 1080p) Digital Video Talk I don't know what happened but in the first video comparing sharpness, the EOS R seems significantly sharper than the a7 III. Maybe just contrast is by default higher on the EOR R??? Seemed to me the dynamic range of the EOS R wasn't as good as that of the a7 III, but then again, the rolloff on the a7 III is kind of hard to take. Hopefully we will get a DR / rolloff test with the EOS R and the a7 III with EOSHD procolor 4.

  39. Hello everyone! I received my BMPCC4K almost a week ago and unfortunately I haven’t had much time to play with it so far but I wanted to give you my first impression and observation in the hope these might be helpful! BUILD QUALITY / ERGONOMICS: The camera is pretty big (and wide especially) but it’s surprisingly light. I’m not a huge fan of the exterior plastic material as it feels a bit cheap and quite prone to scratches but at the end of the day this a professional tool so as long as it’s able to withstand normal use I’m not too bothered about it. I haven’t found any spots that are cause for concern, yes the battery cover it’s a bit flimsy like other people reported but it never came open on me (and even if it did the battery is safely hold in place with a spring loaded clip so it won’t fall over anyway). The lens mount seems pretty robust, I tried mounting some heavy lens and haven’t experienced any flex so it seems all good. The mounting points looks very sturdy as they’re surrounded my a metal plate so if you plan to mount something heavy without a cage it looks like is not gonna be a problem. The camera feels quite good in the hand the only reservation I have is that is fairly easy to obstruct the bottom exhaust while shooting handheld as it’s the natural resting point for the hand that operate the lens. The screen is pretty awesome I should say, it’s detailed, responsive has good colours and it’s surprisingly bright when needed. Is it usable under direct sunlight without a hood? In my experience barely but so is the vast majority of built-in screens out there, for that you need something very bright like a smallHD 1500nits or something similar. USABILITY/OPERATION: Like many other people said before this camera is an absolute joy to operate, the menu system is one of the best in the industry, it’s logically laid out and super intuitive. Overall the experience is much more akin to a RED or an Alexa rather than a hybrid camera and this is good given the this is a cinema camera after all ? I like how everything can be controlled so easily via the touchscreen but I like even more the fact that you don’t have to rely on it if you prefer not to or you’re in a shooting situation in which is not practical. All the main functions have dedicated buttons (and a dial in the front just under the record button) plus the three functions buttons are completely programmable either as toggles for specific functions or you can assign a precise value to a parameter that you wish to quickly recall (say you want to go to iso 3200 with a touch of a button you can do that) The Preset menu is another gem of the OS, you can save camera configurations with totally different settings and recall them in a moment, it’s a massive timesaver! The screen, other than being of great quality, offers an impressive range of tools for a built-in screen the highlight of which (for me) is definitely the inclusion of false colours which is such a great tool to expose and is something that is never present in hybrid cameras. Battery life is not amazing but again it’s quite normal for a cinema camera with an actively cooled sensor I think. I would say you can expect 35-40 minutes recording time quite consistently. Like other users reported already original Canon batteries seems to give the best and most consistent results and are the only one providing a percentage to the camera so I might swallow the hefty price and buy a couple extra of them. I haven’t had any problems with stuck batteries so far and I hope it stays this way! I’ve recorded mainly on SD cards and I’m glad to report that my Sony G ones can reliably record 4K RAW 60fps 4:1 with no issues (although they’re not in the official list provided by BM but I suppose they’re very similar to the new “Tough” series just released which are approved instead). I also used SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-I and although they’re not fast enough for 60fps they can record 4K 25 RAW 4:1 with no issues. I’ve also made a test with a random SSD mounted in a usb-c caddy and it worked perfectly so I’m probably gonna purchase a couple of Samsung T5 as soon as I find a nice holder that I can use without a cage. IMAGE QUALITY: This is where the camera really shines (and it’s kind of important I reckon, right?) ? The images are detailed and rich, the colour science is very very good out of the box and coupled with the ease of use and the big screen is easy and fast to acquire great footage. The dynamic range is not greater than other cameras like the GH5s or the A7III but the numbers on papers often don’t tell the full story.. The camera produces files that have not been processed in any way (if you shoot raw of course) so it’s actually easier to squeeze every bit of information from them compared to a heavily compressed codec. As other users already noted I found the highlights rolloff to be a bit on the harsh side so I’d say it’s a good idea to protect the highlights with this camera as a priority. The dual native ISO values of 400 and 3200 are a very good choice in my opinion, particularly in daylight when you don’t have to use a ton of ND filtration to get the correct exposure. Noise levels are pretty good although I have to say there is more chroma noise that I would like (particularly compared to the kind of monochrome noise Sony has accustomed us to with their sensors) but again, with files this good it’s quite trivial to use your denoiser of choice and get rid of it without murdering the image. I also noticed in a couple of shots some moire/aliasing and unfortunately this is quite inevitable since this is not an oversampled sensor readout and there is no OLPF… This is it for now, hope I haven’t bored you to death and that you’ve found useful information and I promise to follow soon with more details and some hopefully nice images too! Have a great weekend everybody!

  40. Except that slog is unworkable internally ,you get color noise and compression artifact all over the place, so If you want to have all the DR that the sensor have to offer you need to record externally . I do a lot of post work and when you start to move things around, it s immediately visible . The youtube argument is a nonsense, because even in cinema your bitrate is limited to 250 Mb/s, it s about having some room in post to get your image where you want it before you compress it again. But my work sometime get screened at festivals so to me it matters. The motion blur look very different as well. The examples you sent me have little motion to them. But yeah, if you shoot cine4 and upload straight to youtube, that make less sense. I disagree with the face tracking comment , I shoot with Batis and it work very well, way better than any focus puller would manage on large format/long lens/large aperture , I do MV and fashion mostly and I can t always know where the model/performer is going to move ( and if it s dancer, I want to let him/her do his/her things). Beside on a shoulder rig you can see both the rear screen and the recorder so you know when it lock in, the screen don t go off if you setup the video signal/trigger properly. You need to go to the menu and force 4k 24fps out then deactivate the internal recording , and activate to control trigger over hdmi. If you leave the default parameter, the screen go black and you loose face tracking.

  41. The PROAV dynamic range tests are pretty useless. They don't understand that ISO is not exposure. So they have not actually increased the exposure at all steps in these tests. In some they have just changed the iso. Which just shows how the camera reacts to the same exposure at different iso's. Thats why you see such a masive difference at the so called "+3 stops" on the pocket4k test. Between "+1 stops" iso 400 and "+2 stops" 800 thats actually exaclty the same exposure and native iso with a different tone curve aplied. So there would be no difference in what clipped. Whereas with the "+3 stops" thats the same exposure but with a real 2 stop iso boost, so the clipping point has gone down 2 stops in a single step. A better test would be to keep the iso the same and change the actual exposure. You could then do the same test at different iso's to see how iso effected dynamic range.

  42. Good news for EOS M owners, but way too late for me; I've gotten rid of all my Canon lenses, and am putting my last two bits of Canon gear up on eBay later today; I'm done with this company. Going forward for me, it's likely to be the Pocket 4K for straight-up video work, or Fuji for hybrid. I was pretty shocked at Fuji's progress with the X-T3. I'll probably wait for the X-H2, though, to separate it enough from the Pocket 4K. I just hope they add a fully articulating screen. I don't know why all the companies are being so stupid about that. Even Panasonic has apparently gone off their rocker in that regard with the S1/S1R. SMH.

  45. Thats a downer isn't it. There was always the nagging suspicion there that they were just re-skinning an existing product, which is perfectly fine by the way if you are enhancing it with your own additional value through the app etc but I don't think they've achieved that here.
