  1. Being too close to the colour standards on a chart is what got Sony into colour problems in the first place. It was a 100% science based approach when actually colour is also an art.

  3. Of course Blackmagic are profitable but at the same time, compared to what the rest of the industry are doing, they are 'pretty much' giving away their products. Pocket4k with Resolve = US$1299 Adobe Premiere/After Effects/Audition subscription for 2 years = USD$1248 So after 2 years....yes, BMD have given you a free camera. ?

  5. It might sound desperate but I’m praying Nikon doesn’t fuck up with the Z6, crippling it’s continuous autofocus somehow just because it’s the cheaper model. If it’s on par with the Z7, I’ll buy it on release day Loving he motion cadence as well!

  6. There are different types with different looks. The popular 'black pro mist' has some bloom and contrast reduction. But the Tiffen digital diffusion with no contrast reduction or bloom, and the ultra contrast is no diffusion, just contrast reduction, no bloom. The Tiffen hdfx combines those last two for both diffusion and contrast reduction without bloom. There are of course many more options but those are the ones I currently use. My favourite (for now) is a Tiffen HDTV (sometimes called hdfx) at 1/2 strength. I use it on Nikon ais lenses for when a softer filmy look is what I'm after. I just used one on a Fuji xh1 and (mostly) Nikon ais 35mm 1.4 on a speed booster for part of a short film. I'll see if I can get a screen grab together

  7. Outside the bubble of online camera forums, I don't know anybody who has "abandoned" the GH5 for other camera brands. In fact I still know of people who even today in 2018 are buying the GH5, because it is still an extremely relevant and well priced camera. Was being first with 4K in the GH4 also a "silly desire"? Maybe Panasonic should have stuck with HD for longer, so they didn't have to push the other brands to compete with them.

  8. I did a quick skintone and motion test between the two cameras. Will do a more thorough test tomorrow. Let me know thoughts. C200 was donated for the test by Friendly Films! http://www.friendlyfilms.co/

  9. Compared to the GH5 it’s maybe 5% to 10% better, really just a little smoother. Compared to the 85’s it’s about 25% better with vintage lenses from my limited testing. Way less jumpy and it looks more like you have a crappy gimbal vs having a non-fluid tripod head like on the GX85. I haven’t used the G85 very much, but it’s IBIS was similar (very good) to the GX85. The additional advantages like the EVF and Olympus colors make it an easy winner over the GX85s poor EVF and overall lackluster colors and charm. It’s a frustratingly nice camera. If Olympus could add some firmware updates, it could be a THE pocketable video camera to use with compact and vintage lenses.

Potentail reasons: Fanboyism for a different brand Fanboyism for a different format Feelings of inferiority about ones current gear Incorrect believe that they are being held back by gear that is not the absolute newest available Out of control GAS that needs justification for buying something new cantankerous personality by nature

  12. Oh yeah, the 1D C A camera that was officially part of Canon's Cinema EOS series, so kinda half debatebly almost if it really was part of the pure stills line up? And besides, at that point in time it was so very prohibitively expensive that it could just be ignore by most of us mere mortals.

  13. Yup. There's no such thing as "the perfect camera." If some people here end up preferring the EOS-R over its competition, then that's great! Everyone has different tastes and want different things out of their cameras. Personally speaking though, it's hard to think of enough reasons to justify spending that extra $300 for the EOS-R compared to the A7iii or Z6 or the extra $800 if you're considering something like the Fuji X-T3. It's just a question of what ends up happening regarding the majority of the market compared to the minority.

  14. Obviously there are compromises, that's just inevitable, but compare it to the competition it's supposed to be targeting (the Sony A7iii and Nikon Z6). I'm just one person, but while there are obviously some very exciting things about the new R line (especially the lenses), the camera itself just feels like it falls short compared to its two obvious competitors... and it's overpriced compared to either camera at that. That's part of what doomed the Fuji X-H1 earlier this year when Sony announced the A7iii mere weeks afterward for a similar price range (and in fact was less expensive if you bought the X-H1 with the battery grip for its full potential IIRC). Hugh Brownstone nailed it IMO. I'm not saying that the EOS-R is a bad camera. I haven't touched one myself, and I doubt I'll get the chance anytime soon personally, so I can't really comment on that. But at the end of the day, the price is inevitably a factor here since this camera doesn't just exist inside a vacuum. The context of the camera market and what other options are out there now to compare the EOS-R to factor in with that price and the camera just seems like it's bound to fall short for most.

  15. Ok, I still dont understand how it's confusing but I guess it depends on what one is used to. I read about cameras every day so I guess Im used to all variants. On a completely different note. This was a refreshing video. Focusing on the ups and downs of all systems.

  17. Did he say that? Woow. On my side I prefer shorter battery life, it allows me to focus on the essential. I prefer the crop, it allows me to easily zoom and I can use my EFS lens when I want to go wide with the super nice 10-18mm. I prefer having Full HD 60p only, easier to edit than 4K60p! And lord knows how I prefer lower DR: it forces you to expose right. Thanks Canon for making my life easier. Thanks for the trip to Hawaii and free cameras too!

  18. Crossing my finger, going to shoot my first short narrative in 2 weeks. It's about a 20-25 minutes long. The project has two main actresses and 2-3 additional voice parts (but they're off the camera). I'll have an assistant who will do the sound and slate. So this is very low budget. The actresses are both professional but will perform for no fee. My question is, what types of legal paperwork should I have the crew sign. Is it just a basic model release work? I must also add I'll be shooting this in Russia. So not sure, if I should get something that is legally binding in Russia or in US, where I hope to enter a few different festivals maybe. I wrote the script myself, but I had a friend translate it into Russian, do I need to get some kind of a release from the translator? Thanks in advance for your thoughtful and first-hand experiences.

  19. Well, sort of. I was clearing out some stuff and camera across a flexible mirror with a cutout for a tripod screw. I used to use it a long time ago for positioning cameras on short floor tripods behind goals etc to keep my knees dry and my back in one piece before live view to phones became a thing. Because its such a flexible arm I thought it might be worth having a go of re-utilising it to give a low tech solution for cameras that don't have a forward facing screen and its actually not bad at all. As you can see, you connect it to the camera via a screw into the tripod socket or between the screw of an actual tripod and the camera as I've done here. You then position the mirror at an angle up and behind the camera and it gives you a view of the screen (albeit reversed ) over it. Its hard to convey in a picture but it is actually really effective and more than good enough for anyone wanting to do vlogging on a camera without a forward facing screen. Even cameras with rigid non-moveable screens like this LX100 and the Original BMPCC work fine with it. Anyway, as the forum is, quite understandably, being dominated by discussions of new cameras with ever increasing price tags I thought it might be nice to show that for a few quid we can still stick it to the man and get round their screen restrictions Well, I say a few quid but there is one drawback to this particular low-fi solution and that is that at this point you are probably expecting an eBay or amazon link to buy one but, alas, like all good drawer finds I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of where I got it as a single item (though I know I did and it was less than £5). However, it is available as part of a Polaroid Selfie Stick bundle for £10 so still a cheap solution if you need it. http://amzn.eu/d/3QeMCA5

  23. I did. The AF worked but it was very dark so not exactly lightning fast. Will test again tomorrow when the sun is up.

  24. I think we can safely put aside concerns about AF with a huge range of existing Nikon glass. That makes it a whole notch more exciting. Sticks like glue. Dual Pixel AF finally gets knocked off top spot? Frustrating thing is nobody seems to have a Z6! If that has the same AF engine in video mode then it will make sense to wait.

  25. Tested the Viltrox EF to Fuji AF adapter tonight. So far I've only tested it with the 50/1.8 STM and I must say, it's very fast. Not native fast, it's an adapter after all. But noticeably faster than the Viltrox Speedbooster on ny G85. And in general faster than any adapter combo I've ever tried. But like I said, only tested with one lens in pretty bad light. Will test it more thoroughly tomorrow. Yesterday I was street shooting with the G85. Everything was golden until I was shooting straight into the sun. The focus just started hunting like crazy and couldn't focus on backlit subjects. I then switched to a native lens and everything was fine, very fine to be exact. Tonight I quickly tried to replicate the issue with the Fuji version but couldn't. It just worked. Needs more testing but so far I don't really see why a Fuji shooter with EF glass wouldn't get one as long as the money isn't an issue.

  26. Thats pretty cool. Real life isn't always very appeasing haha. I am cool with Sony having accurate colors. They should just include a picture profile that has a very pleasing forgiving look.

  27. I have recently been thinking of creating a periscope type thing with two mirrors.. One directly facing the screen to reflect the view upwards, then the other above it to direct the view forward.. solves the reversing problem. ?

  28. I've got one of these on order The Cfast card and the SSD can be read and written to simultaneously so its a good solution for archiving and cheap at about £15. I'm going to use this as part of a DIY portable standalone field copy device that I mentioned a while ago. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0777958WY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_95LOBbR957CN5

  30. Years ago, a friend of my brother borrowed a Hasselblad 500cm from his Uncle and decided he wanted to go and shoot a fire engine as it emerged on from the station on a call. He waited patiently at the end of the forecourt until there was a call and framed the engine as it was emerging with all lights blazing, fired a frame off and thought he could get another one off but thought better of it as the engine was bearing down on him so he quickly took evasive action and stepped to the side. Not being familiar with the 500cm he of course neglected to take into account the reversed image in the waist level finder and stepped the wrong way. He got away with a broken leg but was persona non grata at his Uncle's house for a long time as the camera had fared less well.

  32. Alan Roberts highlighted a Fundamental Flaw with the entire industry. Namely, that even if you're a spotboy for the BBC or any of the big names in the industry, your findings or observations are irrefutable by anyone, almost like being engraved in stone. It also applies to Newsshooter.com. They and Alan Roberts tested the dynamic range of the GH5s, and the difference is 4 Whole Stops. Either one, or both parties are on something. I would wanna have some of it, but it may make me like them. I encounter many of these self consumed fuddy duddies in the various industries that I work in. The only way to deal with them, is to drive them completely mad, till such time, as they shoot themselves in the foot. Again, and again. One has to make an effort for the world to realise how ludicrously overrated and exalted they are. And one mustn't be kind with them. It's for their own good. It's helping them retire with dignity. Before they become inconsequential.

  34. You could qualify the face, add a tiny bit of blur and then add some grain to the whole picture - that's most succesful in my limited experience. You could of course just add a fraction of blur to the whole image and then you wouldn't have to add the masking step, but 1) qualifying (maybe add a large mask) a face is super easy and quick, and 2) without a qualifier it will probably look less subtle because it affects the whole image. EDIT: If other people have tips and tricks for making footage less sharp and more 'creamy' I'd love to know it, always looking for that with non-Ursa footage.

  35. AF test with older primes compared to X-T2. X-T3 focuses faster with less hunting, also continuous AF seems to be more confident, however the transition between close and far subjects is not butter smooth. Might be better with newer lenses.

  36. That lowlight footage still has way too much midtone detail for my taste (look at her pores), but that's something that's adjustable in post with this much data. It's just a shame they haven't managed to get it like that 'out of camera'. Still a great deal though.

  38. Been reading some of their reports, at times the writer seems quite clueless. (a pencil pushing bureaucrat perhaps? Or at least someone outdated and behind the times) For instance: "The camera achieves HD Tier 1 because the sensor size, while smaller than the preferred 1” size, is greater than the minimum-acceptable ⅔” size." https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/tech/tech3335_s29.pdf And he seems to be the master of the understatement, this is what he said about the Panasonic GH5S: "The dynamic range is about 14.6 stops in HLG, a creditable performance" "Noise levels are acceptable." Yes, he regards the GH5S itself as "acceptable" in lowlight. And because he fucks up the math (he mistakenly believes the GH5S is upscaling its image to be able to do 4K) he says: "The camera cannot achieve Tier 1 or 2 for UHD broadcast or cinema because the sensor resolution is inadequate. However, the performance at UHD is probably adequate for use in productions provided it is not the prime camera."

  39. I have GH5 and Sony A7III. I want to use the Sony more but the IBIS is poop compared to GH5, and I wish the codec was better. Still waiting for FF, video AF, good IBIS or OIS, good codec, 4K60p... I thought A7SIII would check all the boxes but after experiencing the Sony IBIS I highly doubt it will be much improved. Maybe Nikon will save me! In the mean time, GH5 is still no slouch for a lot of different shots, hard to beat the size of that 35-100mm!

  40. Yes, I do wonder what was the highest ISO used in those shots. I'd love to see them try and do a super extreme example with the Z6 (or with a BMPCC4K/Terra4K/E2/GH5S/etc!), like this:

  41. Get the iPhone Xs MAX, it has everything a client could ask for today, IBIS, AF, 4K 60p. Seems to be the best thing out there, and it's just a little more expensive than say the pocket 4K (BUT YOU GET TWO *FREE* LENSES WITH IPHONE OMG OMG)

  45. I mean at this point you're just outright misrepresenting what Areia shot. Yes, he did shoot a video walking around a zoo. He also shot what I consider to be a well-shot, edited and graded video: ... ... as well as one comparing the Micro to the Pocket 4k, which is yet to come out (but he released the Pocket 4k footage already). I know you have seen these videos, mr. Reid, because you have commented on them on your own forums. Why are you downplaying the stuff he made? I mean the answer is obvious: it's because you weren't the one who got to make it. I really don't want to seem hostile to you on your own forums (which, don't get me wrong, I think is awesome for you to facilitate), but it's stuff like this that makes you come across as petty and vindictive, because by putting these little spins on the story you appear to be actively looking for reasons to feel slighted.

Just goes to prove how good Raw footage really is. Speaking about Raw footage, My son just got a Canon 5D mk III. Has shoot a little with ML on it yesterday. He was impressed to say the least. Have not been down to his house to see it.
