  1. Got my DJI Ronin S a few weeks ago and while digging through the app realized that I could program tilt and pan moves and repeat them. I paired the Ronin S with a motorized slider creating a small motion control system. This allowed for some interesting VFX in a music video I just shot. I was able to created several versions of the singer interacting with himself while the camera moved around following the action. Check it out:

  4. You guys need to understand that shot noise is different from sensor noise. All these new CMOS sensors are very low noise chips, regardless of their area size, so what you see is mostly shot noise, which is revealed in low light situations where randomness of the photons appears as noise, and you can't do much about that other than temporal noise reduction that is better be applied in post. So for comparing two cameras, you have to test them in exactly identical environment, "my footage is cleaner than your footage" is stupid method.

  5. It’s so weird that you judge the z6 pre pre pre production footage at 8.000 iso shot with the highly untested n-log profile so harshly. To my eyes it looks a world better than anything I’ve seen from a smaller sensor camera at those sensitivities. Most impressive is the fact that it seems to hold up extremely well with regards to dynamic range and color information even at 8.000. Sure it’s got some noise, but do we even know if the footage was properly exposed according to the n-log gamma curve? Please take a fucking chill pill. I even doubt the BMPCC 4K will match the dynamic range in the day shots.

  6. Are you in the market for a new camera and confused or overwhelmed by the choices available and can't decide which features you need and which you can live without? Or, are you looking for a camera that gives 4k60 10-bit with IBIS, flippy screen, and internal NDs that fits into your budget and into your pocket? Are you thinking about 8K? If this is you then look no further! The best new camera purchase in 2018 is... Don't! With Don't you get to keep your existing camera, but that's not all, it comes with features no other new camera can offer! It is completely free! It has already shipped! It comes with no learning curve, no menus from another planet, and no colour science that looks like it's from another planet! But wait! There's more! It even comes with more than three lenses! .... *ahem* But seriously folks... If you aren't sure which one to buy then I'd say to wait until you understand what your requirements are (especially which features you can live without) and have seen the reviews of the cameras on offer so that you don't get any nasty surprises. We're all familiar with the manufacturers vague and deliberately misleading claims, like when Canon said the M50 had 4K and DPAF which is technically correct but they didn't mention they're not both available at the same time. This is just an example and all the manufacturers do this. This is the reason for full and impartial reviews. Personally, I'm waiting, and if nothing absolutely hits the bullseye for me then I'll wait a generation or two until something does. <END OF PSA> ???

  10. Did he say that? Woow. On my side I prefer shorter battery life, it allows me to focus on the essential. I prefer the crop, it allows me to easily zoom and I can use my EFS lens when I want to go wide with the super nice 10-18mm. I prefer having Full HD 60p only, easier to edit than 4K60p! And lord knows how I prefer lower DR: it forces you to expose right. Thanks Canon for making my life easier. Thanks for the trip to Hawaii and free cameras too!

  11. I have to disagree! Panasonic have had an absolute hit with the GH line, culminating in the GH5. If they can bring their incredible video prowess to a full frame body where we get Panasonic video AND 42mp stills with 13+ stops of dynamic range, Varicam-esque colour science, and two card slots for the pros, then they will strike gold. It's basically two fingers up to Canon and Nikon, hence the countdown and 6 month early announcement. Damage them pre-orders... I just hope they excite with the lens lineup.

  12. No idea if it is really turned off but in the menu of the d750 you have 4 high iso nr thingys....should be the same in the z6.

  13. Intentionally, since they were really noisy, and not that kind of nice noise you get on ARRI and Blackmagic cameras ?

  14. The film you worked on looks cool! Thats a very different kind of grade though. In the footage from the Z6 I see detail in the shadows. There is basically no light and yet I see detail everywhere, and most importantly, the image looks really good. In your trailer the shadows are clipped to black.

  15. Just stop. The Fuji will have a problem with waxy skin at ISO above 800 (not very film like) and the Blackmagic looks lackluster to me, extremely digital looking as you call it, from what I’ve seen. And that tiny sensor won’t make anyone happy shooting above 400 ISO. I did own the GH5 and would never ever use it above ISO 800. So please show me some of your ISO 5000 footage that looks so spectacular.

  16. It was shot in ISO 8000 and thats what we judge. And the remarks about "most whatching is done on 1080p" is not relevanat because in the very near future, it will change.

  17. For me truly personal frustration would be if I feel myself so frustratedly dependent of yet (IX 2018.) non existing device and trying to find reasons to justify that dependency - even presuming that others who are not frustrated must not be in demanding position equal to mine - instead of finding a different way to resolve or recompose given task. But, we all are different philosophers

  20. Well never say never... but I get where you are coming from. Just ordered the XT3 today along with a set of primes. Will do a head to head vs the GH5S if anyone is interested in seeing it?
    2 points
  21. I second that. Still a lot of IR pollution in the BMPCC 4K footage I’m seeing. The GH5S handles the colors better than the Blackmagic.....but that Blackmagic raw tho... that’s nice. All you need is a Hoya IR cut filter to fix the Blackmagic issue

  22. You're probably right about him not receiving a pre-order, but the guy does have a few feature films in Hong Kong, maybe that was his ticket? Either way, he's got camera, and we dont make those decisions... ?‍♂️ Your post make it seem like you'd be happy if no one get's the camera because you didn't. Anyway, It's your site, I'll leave you to it. No more responses from me on the matter.

    DJI Mavic Pro II

I have hard time believing they would risk sell us upscalled 2.7K as 4K. Anyway I have flown the Mavic 2 twice and it's a beast. Great IQ both in photo and video. 0 noise unlike my mavic 1 and mavic air in daylight. DLOG 10 bit Full FOV is fantastic. Biggest disappointment for me at the moment: when using the amazing quick-shots (orbit, spirals, ...) it seems it can only record in normal color mode h.264. What a shame... I never used those modes before but realized they do things better than you can do yourself. For example on a mountain summit, you wan to orbit around the subject standing on the summit. It will orbit a lot better than you doing it manually. But the lack of DLOG and 10 bit in this mode is a shame... Overall amazing drone. IQ is incredible, range and signal quality and battery life are phenomenal. Super stocked.

  25. Okay, here is a true story. Back in 2015 Samsung spent enormous resources on pushing their new NX camera. They for example offered workshops with star photographers in important markets, here in Germany it was Jim Rakete ( in the US I think Alex Webb among others) who shot a series about the music scene in Hamburg on the camera and did a little exhibition along with a workshop for I think something along the line of 20 young photographers who needless to say got a free a camera and some lenses in exchange for posting a bunch of pictures in a visual diary created as a marketing tool by the agency doing the promotional work for the camera. I am not a photographer but a filmmaker and found the video specs of the camera to be quiet exciting. So I asked the agency wether I could have one as well. To my surprise they agreed and loaned me a free camera, plus a whole set of lenses six month for free, with the option for another additional three month if required. Surprised about the generous offer, the agency explained to me, that Samsung had such a high degree of vertical integration, meaning they were able to build the whole camera in-house, that for them cameras were much cheaper to produce than for most competitors. So they did not really thinks twice, when it came to giving away free cameras or loaning them for longer periods of time. Plus they aggressively were pursuing marketshare and had deep pockets. I got the camera and the lenses, shot some stuff on it and got an invitation to lunch from the agency, around late August 2015. The meeting was among other things about a new Samsung full frame camera that was supposed to come out in early 2016. Originally the plan was to release the camera for x-mas 2015 and according to the agency people it was completely ready and in existence, they just had it delayed to devise a better way to market it. The camera, in the words of agency reps, was targeted at the A7 / A7S market and having had a good response from filmmakers for the NX1, they planned on focusing much more on its filmshooting abilities for marketing. So I was asked wether I`d be interested to be among the people to shoot something on the camera before its scheduled release in early 2016. I said sure and we agreed to meet again later that year. Anyway about a month or so after our last meeting, Samsung decided to cut its loses and I had to return the NX1 and the lenses and never heard again from the agency. Since Samsung already had working prototypes for FF cameras with a strong focus on video featuresin 2015, I would not be surprised if those would now see the light of day under a different brand.

  27. Make something! I get lazy sometimes, and then mourn over the piece of s**t I’ve just created. I’ll admit right now I’m lacking in creative spark. Thank you. What would you like to know?

  28. With an eff around camera, I am leaning toward something with IBIS, so I’d probably look at the G85 or an Olympus instead of the G7, but yes, the G7 is still one of the best deals around!!! @Dan Sherman I think I was agreeing with you even if it didn’t read that way. Theoretically a router should be a better tool than a chisel for a dovetail joint but some of the old timers could take a chisel, sharpen it on some concrete and make a perfect dovetail joint in a pinch. It’s quite astonishing to witness. I agree about tools. Using Final Draft to write a screenplay is way more inspiring than creating a word document. It’s intuitive and lets your brain concentrate on the creative. I look forward to seeing what you get out of the GX85, in a lot of ways it will be more fun than shooting with the P4K. I really enjoy your LS300 videos, so I’m sure the GX85 ones will look great.

  29. To be fair, if you found yourself wanting to make electronic music in the 1700's then no amount of Moogs and Oberheims would take your mind off having no way to actually plug them in It is interesting that you make a comparison to electronic music though as those artists at its forefront in the period between the mid 70s and 80s by and large produced their better work during that time rather than latterly when the tools at their disposal became infinitely more powerful. The limitations were simultaneously something they had to work around (which often breeds creativity) but also prevented them from having too many choices which can lead to being filled with crippling doubt and/or ending up disappearing up their own arse. So, for me, the link between creativity and the tools is not always the obvious way round.

  30. Try a Panasonic G7 4k 8bit 4:2:0 It's an excellent small light camera, and its on sale for just under $500 at B&H right now. this is a short test clip i shot right after i got the camera.

  31. But have they? It seems that only 18 months after release, a lot of GH5 users are abandoning the camera for other brands. At $2000, it was very expensive for a m4/3 camera, no matter how much they gave you. And I still don’t really know if they have made any profit from the GH5? Instead, I see a FF Panasonic as a, me too, attempt to get into an increasingly competitive market and if the rumors are correct, it won’t be a cheap cover charge. And then this jump to higher MPs which I assume is for their silly desire to bring 8K video to market. A 12mp a7siii killer with IBIS and lowlight video would have been a way better foray into FF in my opinion. As the rumors suggest, no IBIS, no PDAF, no retro fitted FF lenses (well maybe some Leica if they use that mount) and no existing Professional photographer user base and I just don’t understand what a high MP FF camera from Panasonic is supposed to accomplish. Now if it has internal Raw, it will have my attention. At $3000+ it may just be a double take though.

  32. The EOS-M is pretty cool but the ISO performance is pretty terrible. I own a GX85, its a pretty darn good camera for the price, especially used. Not as good as the GH5 in low light or dynamic range, but its nice. IBIS is awesome too.

  33. @mercer unless I'm reading that wrong, your whole post validates my statement you quoted and said isn't entirely true haha. I was saying the best tools May be technically better, but if they don't make you feel inspired, they won't help. I guess with technical stuff, like joinery, welding and that kind of thing it doesn't apply. But give an musician the best guitar ever, it doesn't mean they'll play like Clapton. I heard recently someone saying that just because cameras are cheaper, doesn't mean everyone can make a movie. People have had pen and paper for centuries, but not everyone's writing like Shakespeare. Inspiration is more important that tools. But certain tools can help you feel inspired. Edit: I also get pumped to use the gx80 with the hack and use it professionaly on the same shoots as that mic I mentioned.

  37. I am not THAT keen on quoting myself, but not THAT unkeen neither, so now rather keen on it: "My two cents and many of words.", implying a bit the inner conflict of answering a question and wrongly evoking the impression of being paternizing. I think you had a gentle smile due to it just as I did when I was typing. Mattias is an eloquent individual who would not feel paternized that easily I figured. @Mattias Burling, Havent found any tests proving better DR on GH4, but having watched plenty of Lumix videos showing me a more intriguing image of the GH5, with better DR along. But then again, not wanting to prove anything but giving my bits of insights. cheers and looking forward to more cool videos of yours.

  43. in the GH4 days, i felt BMD had the better color science. Now with the EVA1 and GH5s, I think Panasonic has the edge. BMD always seemed to "suffer" from a bit of brown-muddiness under artificial light. and i feel I'm still seeing that in the current crop of cameras, although to a lesser extent. But I'll have a chance to do a side by side comparison between my EVA1 and a UMP in preparation for a feature I'm DPing. Looking forward to that.

  45. If Samsung did make the sensor, then why did they lower the resolution from it’s almost 5 year old 28MP BSI sensor? Not that big a difference and do not justify a faster readout on an engineering point of view.

  46. It's rare for an adapter to surprise me, and the Anamorph-X 1.33x Pro from Letus achieved that. It allows you to go super wide and it holds up image quality like very few other adapters out there. Flares could be improved, but as these are still being made, we can just email Letus a bunch and get things changed - which is another great advantage of this lens over vintage adapters. What do you think of the footage and the results? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GplZGXPXmS0
