  1. I like the pictures. A lot. This camera will probably replace the micro cinema camera for me as it’s not much bigger and is much easier to work with. I didn’t feel as strongly about the 4K production camera / Ursa because they were limited, principally by dynamic range. I have a deep affection for the 4.6K sensor and have shot nearly daily withnit since before it was launched. I know it very well. This pocket camera will integrate and sit very nicely alongside the 4.6K. It’s already a closer match than the micro for me without having really tested it in an A/B scenario. I was a little worried about it having less DR Than the 4.6K but I think the other clips show some great examples of what this sensor can do. “Nature” was incredibly tricky material to shoot as anyone who’s been in that situation before would know and it was unfair to see it being derided. Those that did so only reveal their own inadequate understanding of what those shots reveal. I can think of a million other scenarios I would have rather done but these sequences were specifically produced to illuminate what the camera can do in specific situations. What im almost more excited about is the unification that Gen 4 brings. As I mentioned earlier, it’s pretty much the same people at BMD that brought you the first camera working on this camera. They’ve learned a lot (and so have I) and I think Gen 4 is really strong. I wish this and extended video would get rolled out wide already as I think half the issue I see with users of BMD products is a lack of knowledge in grading. Now BMD do have perhaps the greatest colour correction tool on the market BUT they don’t make it easy to get to a great result without a little arcane knowledge. Even I often run into issues when working by myself and I see extended video being a great step in addressing that shortcoming. There’s no point in talking about how great you can make images shot RAW if you don’t know how to do it and can’t easily or intuitively find a way to do so. With regards to the 4k Pocket. Its a genuine low light contender. I was really impressed at what a useable picture it produces with little lighting. I’m laughing at those that said it’s overlit. I mean a 500w chimera dimmed to almost nothing so the background lighting would still show though the tinted hotel windows is very very low light, much lower levels than the idiots demanding I walk out on the street and light by sodium were demanding. Again, I laugh when I see comments about how noisy ISO3200 is but I’m guessing those users aren’t aware how much image processing their cameras are doing at high ISOs. BMD allow you as the user to choose your poison. A very very underrated feature. And like colour correction it’s almost too powerful because users haven’t been instructed to change their expectations, nor how to add noise reduction or sharpening so they can season to taste. The best testbfootage will be friends users so the sooner they ship the cameras the better. Hopefully Gen 4 means there will be less hysteria about its performance and a few will realise there’s no point comparing it to a GHx or a Sony and learn to get the most from what it is good at. JB

  5. Is it really closer to the URSA Mini though? I see both sides of the argument, but the BMP4K looks closer to the GH5 than the original pocket camera. The original pocket camera looks closer to the Alexa than the Gh5 does... So? Can't wait to test it, but if I liked this look I would already own the Gh5 at this point. Am I missing something? Market: We want a 4K Pocket Camera! BMD: Here ya go! Market: Not Enough Mojo.

  6. Actually I think the rumour may be correct. Only that it will be a Cinema Camera like the Varicam with a Full Frame sized sensor (larger than the sensor on the Varicam). It won't be a consumer camera. Right now Panasonic has too many issued with getting a FF Consumer/ Prosumer Camera: 1. Lack of PDAF. It can't use its DFD for Full Frame. 2. No FF lenses yet. If it uses the Leica Mount, it will have to create affordable lenses and a lot more than those currently on offer. There are Many other things it needs to do too.

  10. Maybe not on this form, but I know a lot of people photagraphers who prefer m-43 to FF due to the size and weight savings, especially when it comes to the longer focal length lenses. If I was looking for something better than my gh5, it wouldn't be a FF hybrid, it'd be an Ursa Pro. Honestly, I think a lot of people who are constantly always wanted to get into full frame have insecurity issues. So many of them have that I need to be a ”real boy” mentality, and to them that means they have to use FF whether it's for Stills or video. I always laugh when I hear people lusting after that "FF look”

  11. Please stop. Finding the best GH5S price in Sweden by Googling around is a particularly silly and pointless argument even for EOSHD. How about the G90 though? GH5S sensor with IBIS at consumer prices, the only question is how they'll cripple it. I'll probably buy it...unless somebody can find me a GH5S in Sweden for less than $1200...

  12. They got SO much flack for that crop factor on 5D4, wouldn't be wise doing that again knowing what they're up against. then again it's Canon..lol

  13. As someone who has BMPCC4K on preorder and was a GH5 skeptic, I only recently used the GH5 in a shoot for the first time and was blown away by the ease of use. The gimbal ended up in the bag, and I shot the whole thing by hand. If it's anything like the micro 4/3 camera, along with a higher megapixel sensor (40 to 50), I'm jumping in.

  17. Personally I really prefer the articulated screen found on the 6DII and the GH5 (except to mount on some gimbal). Why do you prefer the tilted screen? Magic lantern showed multiple times that the Canon cameras can do so much more and I'm not talking about some exotic features that freeze the camera. It's clearing crippling. Let's wait for the final specs of the Canon system but no doubt that they will sell them by truck loads. Why would they bother since people continue to buy Canon?

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

In his case, I believe he is using a Film Lut intended for LogC. Arri tends to be more rigorously supported by third parties (accurate film conversion). This would be a very different starting point from Arri's R709 Lut. Main/Soft are a nice place to start grading from (without further *technical transforms etc.)

  20. The GM isn't a small lens, but that's ok with me if the IQ is great. My FE 28/2 gets a lot of use. And I always have a 24-70 and 85/1.8. One lens that potentially covers most of that makes my life as a travel shooter lot easier. But a f/2 zoom with -6ev AF, that sounds like a great walk around kit. I could carry the 28-70, a UWA and the 50 for everything but wildlife, and obviously Canon has plenty of glass to cover those needs. We already know Canon's touchscreen will be better than most of the competition. Lots to like there. What a crazy few weeks this is shaping up to be, I can't remember a time where so many huge announcements were made. Chris

The f/2? Yeah, I am pretty sure it is the same design as the Contax Hollywood but it sells for even less. It’s definitely a possibility... I’ve been dreaming of that Hollywood lens for years.

I just checked all the biggest retailers here and they aren't listing the prices you claim. Plus you named some store I've never even heard of. Why don't you for once just answer like a normal person instead of a troll?

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Sure, The format that the Arri Alexa actually shoots to is LogC. The LogC conversion conforms VLog to the exact output of the Arri (when the footage is WBed correctly under a supported light source) From there, the LogC data format needs to be conformed to the display to allow the correct handling of RGB. The standard approach for Rec709 is to apply the Arri R709 Lut to the footage (which has the correct RGB primaries). Other Luts and workflows intended for LogC may also be used following the LogC conversion (the Alexa is often well supported by 3rd parties). My experience has been that Arri's default 709 color space is a very uninspiring starting point for me. The underlying color science is great, but the luma and saturation placement is just not very cinematic. Enter Main/Soft; these include the LogC conversion, combined with a luma and saturation placement that I much prefer (and conforms to the 'Sicario luma ceiling'). They include the Arri R709 primaries for correct RGB on a Rec709 display. The base look is informed by film (celluloid) luma and saturation. I may release this as a separate component for Arri users eventually (the 'Emotive Color' component) The following is from an Alexa Mini (Master Prime 35mm): LogC Arri 709 EC Main (Click to see in the correct dark context, the page is very bright)

Yep, I read that too a few years ago that the CP.2s were rehoused ZFs - the 50mm f1.4 was the first lens I got for the new 60D I bought years ago. I think the Sigma (Art) will probably be sharper wide open, but IMHO it lacks the creamy quality of the Zeiss ZFs - if you like the Zeiss look, then the ZFs are a good modern take & I thought they were great for filming (and you can always sharpen in post). Also, got to remember that Zeiss have made a ton of great lenses over the years & you don't have to go for the Contax versions. I bought some of the Zeiss Jena MF lenses ages ago & they were really nice & you shouldn't get put off by seemingly underwhelming F stop numbers on MF lenses, as they are brighter than they first appear. This was the article that helped identify which ones to buy: https://frankglencairn.wordpress.com/vintage-zeiss-glass-on-modern-cameras/ I'm thinking of going back to MF lenses & in particular the Mamiya Sekor 645 lenses - seen some things filmed on them & they look great. Too many lenses & not enough money to try them all or keep them.

  26. I agree. I think Canon are going to protect their pro DSLR line (as Nikon) and are going to continue to protect their C-line. This probably means single card slot, 4K crop, 8-bit etc.

  27. @Mattias Burling Never going out of AF-S means not taking advantage of Dual Pixel tracking though no? @EspenB Lol.. i suggested same thing couple minutes ago but just found out on nokishita that it's in fact a "Multifunction bar installed". Could be used for zooming among several other things i'd imagine

  28. I am still firm APS-C believer - best compromise between size, IQ, price and DOF capabilities. FF is just too expensive and too big. All these FF rumors have me wondering, who has the money for this stuff (professionals aside)? Hopefully, Sony and Fuji will keep the flame alive and Sony won't just focus everything on their FF efforts.

  30. You mean like the 30MP sensor already does in the 5D IV? Me too. Nearly bought one this week already. Needs lenses from third parties though. Panasonic using the same mount would be amazing.

  31. True! But at some point, even the low end specs are good enough, a point which we hit a year or two ago for me (and probably many others). Some people really need/want 4k60p, but I'm happy with good quality HD, so ergonomics and usability are a real deciding factor these days. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Canon does, and let's be honest, I'm just as excited to see what the A7S3 is like.

  32. I suspect it is a programmable control ring, like what is in G7X and RX100. A bit like the aperture ring on the Fuji’s, except can have different functions. It’s also available on the EF adapter too. I guess they have forgone the joystick in favour of touch screen? It still has the D-pad. It’s more 6D than 5D by the looks overall (which I’m perfectly fine with). Will be buying with 28-70, 50/1.2 and 35/1.8 Macro.

  33. This thing is going to be a Cine camera so it doesn't really matter what mount it has. It will be 5000 bucks or more. Probably 10,000 bucks or more.
    1 point
  34. It looks like it may be a function dial like the Nikon Z lenses have on the back that you can program for different functions. Unless I missed it I don't see a Joystick anywhere on it? That seems like a odd thing to not include unless that rocker switch is suppose to function like one among other usues??

  35. Sounds like the ND adapter will basically be an OEM version of the FotoDiox ND Throttle. Which I've actually been pretty pleased with so far actually. If the Canon version is electronic, and/or can move out of the way, that would be pretty awesome.

  36. Nd adaptor is a gamechanger any way you look at it. I know heaps of people have been asking for it, and if they have delivered i see a lot of people switching from sony, even if the a7siii gets 10 bit 60p. You get 4k dual pixel full frame with ibis and canon color (clog doesnt need 10bit) and NDs

  37. That's a really cool idea! I wonder how hard it would be to sell to the general public, though? I think people would balk at the idea of carefully inserting a ~20mm long lens rear element into their camera every time you change lenses. But it would certainly be innovative and make Canon's mirrorless much more appealing for the vast swaths of people who own EF or EF-S glass. EF mount is so common I adapted all of my Nikon lenses to Canon just to put them on a NX-EF adapter! Makes it so much easier to quickly use them on borrowed or rented cameras. On a more general note, while I'm excited to see what Canon has in store, I bet it will be another disappointment for me as my main hope is for H.265. The NX1's codec quality is all I need, and I don't want to double or triple my hard drive consumption for marginal returns on that front. Once the GH5 implemented it, I hoped the floodgates would open to H.265 in mainstream cameras, but we may have to wait a little while longer. Canon would have to pull off something truly spectacular for me to buy into it without H.265.

  40. Yeah you have made some bad decisions as of late. ?
    1 point
  41. Well that is pretty much the main reason you pay the big money. To have a fast as heck, deep DoF lens. If you want to close it down there are plenty of good cheap f2.8 lenses that look good wide open. Easier to make them good at that aperture wide open.
    1 point
  42. You make it sound as if you have to stop down the camera loads to get a sharp picture, but to f4 it's only one stop! And you've got to remember it's an oldish lens without all the modern coatings. I've never worried about CA, to me it's like complaining about Moire & Aliasing, just a waste of time - people are too often obsessed with absolute perfection instead of just getting the shot. But it certainly has that Angenieux look, which isn't for everyone. Don't ever try the original as it'll leave you sobbing mess.
    1 point
  43. The Tokina 28-70 2.6 is a wicked lens. I haven't had many issues with CA but it is noticeably softer than the Zeiss and Sigma lenses I'm used to but the image that it produces is, to my eye, much prettier. Cant wait to test it on the new pocket. Also I picked it up for like £120.

  47. I dont really find it 'strange' at all (well Ken Wheeler is obvious strange but that is different.) The D850 user with 20 DSLR lenses tends to believe he has the best camera system out there (and may well be right.) Generally speaking I doubt they think that the Z7 brings anything to the party as they probably dont do video. They consider mirrorless cameras too small (unergonomic) and little more than consumer toys. And their worst nightmare is a successful Z7 - because it means that Nikon will increasing direct resources into the Z system and neglect DSLR system. And ultimately a successful Z system will reduce the resale value of their D850 system.

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

With the Olpf settings, the texture rivals the Alexa (and this smoother style is a key quality of the 5D3 ML) Of course, I would love to support the 5D3 eventually (they are rented out near me) *On the identical note, that is that the P4K and GH5 both converted to LogC will be identical (assuming same settings and lens) Oh yea - extreme red saturation is now correct with Verde (there was an artifact out there before)

  49. Yeahy! I received my Lukilink recently! It is real, an actual aluminium black box. The not so good part is that it already exists, and that it doesn't do anything for me as there is no software, and 1-2 apps I tried were keep crushing before connecting. This guy says it all. Glad that I received something of course, but feel sorry for people that bought 2 or more of those, or expecting something that works.
