  1. They seem to have a vision for it to be a bona fide retail product to compete with the iPhone and top end Androids so they'll need to start ordering up some industrial quantities of that Kool Aid they currently use for communion How much extra value (i.e. free stuff) they throw at the other modules is going to be proportional to how much compelling content (and improvement in performance) they can pull together for when it properly launches. If the hologram stuff just doesn't wow enough they'll need to pivot it into the cinema camera aspect being the selling point otherwise it could just bomb as a system completely. When I see people on Reduser who are invested in it and desperately want it to live up to the hype saying its more or less reminiscent of a Nintendo 3DS as an experience then I do worry what the reaction to it is going to be from the average consumer to it if it doesn't blow them away. I am barred from 02 after a "misunderstanding" about a very large bill in 1996 so I wouldn't worry on that score. Its when I say I'm in Cash Converters looking at one for £199 that you need to be concerned

  2. Seems like a pretty fair overview of the camera, and interesting that it's more sized like the BMCC rather than original BMPCC.

  3. Oblique rays strike the center of the image as well as the corners. These are aperture dependent and are called marginal rays. The relationship between f-number and the marginal ray angle is given by f/# = sin(theta), where theta is the marginal ray angle. So, at f/1 the marginal ray angle is 30 degrees, and so on. The obliquity of the marginal ray does cause a form of pixel vignetting that perhaps should be called pixel apodization. The effect is that the edges of bokeh blurs - where the marginal ray obliquity is highest - is darkened relative to the center. The good news is that this is the definition of "good bokeh". I think Andrew's two sample images reveal this effect. I would guess that the bottom image was shot with the faster lens.

  4. A very good article by Frank Glencairn on the new camera https://frankglencairn.wordpress.com/2018/04/19/why-the-new-pocket-cinema-camera-2-0-isnt-actually-a-successor-of-the-original-pocket-and-why-it-doesnt-mater/

  7. Prediction- they'll put even more cool stuff in for a great price, and people who use it to shoot flower videos will still complain about it.

  8. Bigger sensor, or faster lens? Which is most important? Well, a lens you can change and your sensor you cannot. Here's how to stop worrying about crop sensors. Read the full article

  11. I think it depends on what you want and what lenses are AVAILABLE. My favourite lens is the Canon 17mm F4 L TS-E. When you need shift and wide, you have will have a hard time do that with M43 (maybe a tilt shift adapter with a 8mm lens would be the closest if you can). There is an increasing number of solutions so the number of situations where it would be harder to do things with one format or another is shrinking but they still exist. Another would be fast longer exotics. 400 2.8 for instance (or even 300 2.8). To get the end results to match would be close to impossible currently (how much would a 200 1.4 cost for M43 given the costs of 400 2.8 lenses anyway). I could never afford a modern 300 2.8 AF lens now let alone a 400 2.8 AF but I still love using my old MF Tamron adaptall 300 2.8 and they can be found fairly reasonably priced and the same with some others (old Nikons, Canon FD ETC). If you want 300mm FF angle of view at 2.8 what would you use on M43? (These lenses are also great ON APSC and M43 but then give a 450/600mm FF angle of view.) Maybe something speed boosted but that would have to be something fast and long anyway if it exists.

  14. Surely not... Isn’t it disciples only? I like the optimism about the opportunities for the 2d stuff. A genuine “pocket” cinema camera isn’t too much of a leap of faith? (Although possibly deep rather than just big pockets might be required). I dread the day when you post that you’ve picked up an H1 in the O2 store for 299...

  15. While 2x16GB is indeed a great start, RAM price is not the nicest nowdays. But I guess that is what happens with a planned shortage to drive price up. Going to be interesting to see what happens with that lawsuit, if it even change anything since it's not the first time it happened. This is why I like ECC in a workstation, granted I have not heard of anyone having RAM problem in years unless you count lightning strike or other causes.

  16. Well here is a trick question to you guys, because I think not everything that has been stated here from the beginning is true. When talking about final aperture on a lense, you have to include the fact of which format the lens was originally made for. Does a full frame lense of 35mm 2.8 change its aperture when you adapt it with a simple adapter (no speedbooster) to m43? No it doesn't, it will still act like a like 35mm 2.8 lens. And there is proof for that! If you adapt manual lenses the IBIS of the Panasonic m43 lenses only works smoothly when you set it to 35mm. Applying the crop factor is not as simple as stated in this article and by most of people. Watch this video as proof.

  17. While it's ultimately a matter of definition as you say, it seems to me rather more natural to consider the speed booster + lens a new lens with a new focal length, than to consider the speed booster part of the sensor. Same as a wide angle front adapter or a teleconverter.

  19. There is one thing for sure, and that is that contentious people like LvT promote robust discussion. And I would say that is probably a positive outcome. I don't agree with the key premises of Andrew's argument, nor the conclusions that follow, and I think it is reasonable to contest the argument on that basis. Perhaps I have missed something as well and I can learn from the discussion. But I'm not sure that personalising things is particularly useful, more of a distraction. Sometimes, a different conception of the problem leads to different conclusions.

  21. Having two sticks allows for some redundancy if one stick fails. With one stick only your PC will be down in case of memory failure and it could be hard to troubleshot the issue. With two sticks you simply remove one after another and restart the PC to check what is going on. I would start with 2x16GB to begin with. 32GB is kind of a minimum now for video editing, especially if you do a little bit of after effects. Then you can add another 2x16GB later on.

  22. Companies would love it if everyone believed this , but unfortunately (or fortunately for our wallet) it is not the case. I have built and bought too many computers over the years. Currently I am using a MacPro from 2010 with 12 cores, 64gb ram, an M.2 NVMe boot drive and a Titan X GPU and I can tell you this is no way obsolete: That was of course when Apple made computers for professionals . But with windows, which have even more choices, you can easily update any part of the system. Even with different generation CPUs you just need to upgrade the CPU+motherboard. RAM technology does not change that fast and easily lasts for ~10years. Future-proofing is very important when building a computer. Unless someone has either too much cash to waste or no idea how to build a computer that is.

  23. We have standards for tonnes of things, why not gimbals? Specifically, how well they stabilise? As far as I can tell, a gimbal is a physical device that receives vibrations from the handle and through the three motors forms a low-pass filter such that only large slow motions are able to make it through to the camera. This should be easily test-able via a test rig of some kind. I would expect a graph showing dB of attenuation across a range of frequencies over the three axis's of motion. That way we'd be able to say things like: "gimbal X has better attenuation than gimbal Y up to vibrations of strength Z, but above that X runs out of steam and Y is better, therefore for fine work X > Y but for difficult environments Y > X" or "gimbal A has much better attenuation of higher frequencies than B or C or D, therefore if you plan on mounting it to a vehicle (which has a vibration frequency distribution shown in the graph below) you're better off with A". Instead, what we get is "I'm going to watch youtube videos where people compare two different gimbals by running with each in turn, therefore seeing how well each performs IN STABILISING A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SET OF VIBRATIONS". Hardly the best way to compare devices costing hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Right? They can say, "Our camera gives the best detail" With the OLPF side-by-side, you can really dial it in to get the Alexa aesthetic - here are new settings that are even better than the previous for the single node approach:

  25. “What I do support is the freedom of the filmmaker to make a film of his choosing without censorship.” The danger here is that this statement is difficult to distinguish from: ”...is the freedom of the person to behave in a way of his choosing without censorship.” That is anarchy. In a JCSesque happy psycho-utopia it might work but in practice there is no evidence that it can or does or has. In a civilised society there are - and must be - certain moral standards and rules which govern the behaviour and actions of individuals. Those who break those rules are liable to sanctions. And that, in my opinion, has to apply to “filmmakers” just as much as a school teacher or any other occupation or label. Yes, “creative types” push, bend and test the rules - but that is an entirely different statement than to suggest that a filmmaker should be allowed to operate entirely out-with any moral boundary. No one individual or category of individuals deserves to be exempt from the moral control which “society” - broadly understood and interpreted and not even necessarily universal - deems appropriate. Remember Zach? I’m sure he described himself as a “filmmaker”. He wasn’t allowed to express his creativity in the way he thought appropriate because he “breached” the “rules” of a “community”. Note that, as far as I am aware, no one proposed that he should have been stopped before making the film. He had the “freedom” to make it - society retains an assumed moral authority and freedom to respond in whatever way it seems appropriate. Freedom - the key word here possibly - is never unrestrained or unqualified or independent of a given framework. ”He is here to trouble us and to prod, to get us out of our comfort zone and possibly even to give a few of us nightmares.” Would that justification also apply to a terrorist? Once the statement is qualified then it inevitably acquires an unresolved ambiguity and “dies the death of a thousand qualifications”. An interesting and thought-provoking article.

    Lenses

A couple more shots from the Canon 28mm 1.8. I got this lens for an insanely low price and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite lenses. Even without IS, I am able to go handheld on FF, which will make this lens indispensable going forward.

  28. I don't think the majority of his work is even meant to be enjoyed. However in all of the Von Trier films I've seen, I've felt an intelligence and deep layered meaning was there behind all of the graphic scenes. If certain things are to be censored like sadism, then it means certain stories can't be told and I don't agree with that. Of course, everyone is entitled to an opinion on a film and whether they enjoy it or not is up to them. It's hardly going to be a date movie is it? But to get hysterical about it and walk out of the cinema like those 100 at Cannes is more likely a result of these people not really seeing beyond the surface. As for left vs right politics, let's try not to get into that here, because it isn't really what the article is about. The left has gone more extreme, has gone hysterically politically correct, but the right has gone more extreme as well and both sides at their most extreme are as batshit crazy as each other. I don't support any form of political extremism either left or right. What I do support is the freedom of the filmmaker to make a film of his choosing without censorship.

  29. Looks like Panasonic has created a new sensor technology that is earmarked for the GH6. This new sensor can adjust sensitivity of each pixel individually using the per pixel ND function. And all of this is done at 8k resolution. From the press release: “Panasonic Develops Industry’s-First*1 8K High-Resolution, High-Performance Global Shutter Technology using Organic-Photoconductive-Film CMOS Image Sensor The new technology enables 8K high resolution and high picture quality imaging without motion distortion, even in extremely bright scenes.“ You can read more here.
