  1. Trust me, I have my hands on some ProRes and DNG materials from the camera (acquired from NAB), it's clean af up to about 6400. Noise pattern is very pleasant fine grain, due to lack of compression obviously. The sensor is confirmed to be IMX294CJK, it's the STARVIS line from Sony Semicon with BSI design, originally intended for low light surveillance. ProRes screenshot:

  2. Jon, why don’t you bake in the LUT? It looks terrible!

  3. It was the default setting on the camera, UHD 4K instead of DCI 4K, all of them are ISO 3200. They didn't tape the card slot, so...

  4. You guys need to learn how to hold your cameras correctly, and also how to pull focus. I have a few Cannes lions under my belt and I’ve shot with no ibis, non active lens mounts and finally NO AF for the past 7-8years. This camera is crazy insane, and also it’s freaking 1400dollars with tax!!! Like what stuff do you guys even shot?!

  5. uncompressed Raw actually requires less processing power. no need to debater and to compress.

  6. Here are two more screenshots, there are three dynamic range modes (video, extended video and film), these were shot with "film" at ISO 3200 if I remember correctly:

  7. To me, just getting more options beyond 1600 is a surprise for a blackmagic camera. And a welcomed one.

  8. I do hope Blackmagic have already bought up a boatload of the sensors. I can just see Panasonic getting on the phone to Sony this morning and saying "You know that IMX294CJK sensor that we buy off you for our GH5 cameras? How many have you got?....Right, we're on our way there now....We'll take the lot"

  9. How the hell did this thread get 33,000+ views since Saturday. That is approaching half the X-H1 monster thread which has been around since February. Just shows how much long-time demand in-waiting there was for 4K raw & prores at $1299 Doubt a mechanical HDD has the write speeds for 4K raw or ProRes. May as well stick to SD cards. USB C is a great feature for external SSDs though and replacing a bulky HDMI recorder. Like an Atomos Star but smaller and camera-USB-powered.

  10. I think we should think about the fact it’s supposed to be possible to load up custom LUTs on the camera, not only for monitoring but you’ll be able to bake them in. This is potentially huge for fast turnover shooting and something we’ve seen is detrimental to the image quality, which James Miller has shown with the GH5.

  11. I've heard from one experienced dealer that he expects to see them before Sept. That date is intentionally conservative. I never pre-order cameras. I pre-ordered this one.

  13. If it does RAW over USB C at same time as ProRes to card... That would be an easy solution. I have a feeling one might switch off though, otherwise it becomes a Pocket grenade.

  15. I just found a place in Holland where you pay 100e deposit and they'll send monthly updates on progress (so they say). Deliver to your house same day they come into stock and the best part is you can cancel the order and get the deposit back at any time between now and release. I normally don't pre-order stuff, but there's literally no reason not to here. The guy said he's got a meeting with BM Europe tomorrow, and will call me with more info on when to expect the delivery. I'll be sure to post here if there's anything worth mentioning.

  16. To update a previous comment where I mentioned waveform. I had thought I read it on BH but apparently I read it in the Cinema5D article. There is no mention of it having waveform monitoring on the BH site and in the pictures it doesn’t show waveform as an option in the monitor menu, so unless Cinema5D is privy to information that we are not, then there is no reason to assume the Pocket II will have internal waveform monitoring. With that being said, it does have false color and in my experience false color can be more useful for quick, on the fly, exposure adjustments. Ymmv.

  17. Oh God, here we go... you have been making spiteful comments about other people’s comments on the GH5... Sorry I was wrong about the italics... I reread it and realized you were quoting someone who was quoting someone... my bad. And finally... Jesus Christ Jon... which is it... you love the GH5 and need no other camera because it’s better than the Pocket II or do you want the Pocket II? Seriously, these oddball conversations you are having are becoming nonsensical. The funny thing is that I can completely skip your portion of the conversation... which is a lot and still follow the general thread. And honestly I really don’t care if you take my camera advice. But for someone that goes to such lengths to defend the GH5, then why bother spending more money on another camera... it’s not like getting a Pocket II is going to change your videos that much. You are putting quality work out with the GH5 and from my experience, BM cameras are different beasts.

  19. After letting this bombshell of a release settle for almost a day now, I must say I am still pretty damn excited. What is offered at this price point seems unfathomable. I honestly don’t know how they will be making a profit off of this camera... but that isn’t my problem. Now I’ve been thinking about some of the obvious features and have made a few assumptions based on previous BM cameras... Dual ISO at 800 and 3200... this is huge but most likely, due to noise and DR, they will be the only two ISOs you would shoot at. I personally think it’s awesome to get that extra lowlight ISO but other people who haven’t shot with a BM camera may want to be aware of the practical ISOs on BM cameras if the 25,000 number is a huge selling point to them. IR Cut Filter??? There have been some claims that this may be the same sensor that’s inside the GH5s? If so, does that mean we won’t need an IR Cut filter? Waveform, False Color, Baked in LUTs... this is great... really awesome. I will probably be using this as a ProRes only camera, so Zebras set at 90 have been the go to setting for quick exposure on BM cameras... but if there is a quick solution to turn on False Color, then this becomes an invaluable tool at this price point. And finally the ability to not only load viewing LUTs but being able to bake them in is pretty awesome for quick turnaround... of course how this will affect the dynamic range of your shots should be considered before you start throwing LUTS at your footage before you hit record.... that’s where the waveform monitor will come in handy. So just these features alone are pretty amazing. There’s been a lot of talk about how this camera will affect the marketplace and in all honesty it shouldn’t. This looks like a shiny new toy but this IS A CINEMA camera. If you are an event videographer or a real estate videographer or a wedding videographer, there are better options out there and you will probably be let down. BM makes amazing cameras but the images need to be caressed during production and after. So your GH5 or C100 or FF Sony is not obsolete. I think your use of italics is a little misleading here? But you’re right the GH5 is awesome and you are getting nice work with it so there really isn’t a need for you to go out and buy the Pocket II. I think you will be highly disappointed with it.

  20. If I were to speculate on the battery side... The larger screen is 1080p... constant 1080p feed to debayer and process, from constant full pixel readout. Mirrorless cams have a lower power, lower res mode for live-view. This probably doesn't. Raw is unprocessed data straight from the sensor, but the write speeds will be higher, card and card controller more power hungry and dedicated processors involved with compression even (maybe). Other considerations... the touch screen UI is like running a tablet on the side, from same battery as camera... probably runs on an Arm processor, and quite a lot of background processes going on involved with the display and monitoring tools... And then there is power and heat management, which probably isn't as well developed as on a camera like the GH5. And maybe they just selected less expensive, but less power economical chips.

  24. I'd say - keep or buy what ergonomically makes best feeling to you and best suite to your needs. Even 500$ difference will be easy compensate if you really like and with enjoy to use your tool. One camera, one or two lens that make you can fully concentrate to and accomplish your goal. Maybe to think of shooting as to some sort of peaceful meditation - only relevant is that you could not be distracted by anything... everything else is in yourself. Of course, I'd say it more to myself than to you - because I'm always starting with presumption that you or anybody else knows better and more than me...

  25. Its going to be damn hard to sell a Sony A7s mk III for over 3000 bucks, it just is I don't care what it has in it. They were probably happy as hell to see Panny, Oly and Fuji push up the price to 2000 bucks and more, but now, shit. I mean people that have a lot of Sony FE lenses, well they will buy it, they are in it for the long haul. And they can probably afford to buy the BMPCC 4k to boot. But it has to hurt sales on it. It just proves to me how cheap you can really make a damn good camera in this day and age. If I paid 3 grand or more now I would feel like I am getting raped with this BM announcement.

  26. Well the BMPCC was a "cinema camera", thus external power/audio/screen is essential if you want high quality. Just like if you used an Arri / RED / etc! I don't get why people didn't get this. Instead expecting something completely different. However it appears BMD really took this criticism to heat, and have greatly improved the audio and internal battery life. However the audio in even the original BMPCC isn't that awful if just for casual usage, a lot of my vlog videos are audio straight into the BMPCC with no editing. https://www.youtube.com/c/SoundSpeeding

  27. @IronFilm Thanks for the clarifications about the codec upgrade and the overheating problem of the a5100. Yeah, I think for most sane people, a used panasonic would fit the bill. Wondering what the DR will be like of the new BMPCC4K when it is released. Well... I am a fountain of misinformation today. You are correct; no mic jack. Just a usb jack and a micro hdmi jack. (Just checked on my a6000) I can say with (almost) absolute certainty that the a6000 does have the multi-interface shoe that allows for one to plug a sony mic into the hotshoe. After a brief search of SOLD cameras on ebay in the usa, looks like: Used G7 body only starts around $500 Used a6000 body only starts around $375 Used a5100 with 16-50 kit lens starts around $225. This was a quick search on the SOLD listings so please don't quote me on this. Hope this is helpful. Apologies in advance if it isn't.

  30. Happy New Year all!!! I know, I know... every year can technically be the year of the hybrid DSLRs or VDSLRs.... Given how these companies are spitting them out. But, hear me out... There is obviously the eminent GH5S announcement in early January, speculated to be a low-light, more video centered camera. The inevitable follow up to the a7sii, given that the a7riii was announced a couple of months ago. We all know that the A7S lineup is the more video oriented one... Apperently, the Canon 7D Mark 3 and 90D is also expected with 4K... but I also expect heavy crops on them. The Canon 7D has been a staple in affordable VDSLRs, before the t2i came out... And, the XXD line from the 70D onward is Vlogging heaven sent for some. Other rumours coming out about Canon include ILC version of XC10/15, 6K C900 and possibly a c100 mark 3. Red's hydrogen one - I just want to see the hologram technology - speaking of which has anyone seen "7D holograms" in action? Like in person? I didn't even know about this till last evening... Google/Youtube search that and you will know what I mean... Anyway, back to the hydrogen one... I also want to see it in different camera configurations and sensor sizes... Blackmagic... Boy oh boy... Can't wait to see what's up their sleeves. It's going to be one hell of an ace of spades.... This the year son... This the year!

  31. Just returned from NAB. Here is what I found out about the new Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. The Good: 1. Huge screen. 2. Surprisingly light.. 3. Ports 4. 12 bit 4K internal recording. The Bad 1. There is nothing “Pocket” about it. It’s huge for the form factor. 2. It is not of the same build of the MkI version. That is to say the new camera will be polycarbonate that is carbon fiber reenforeced. What does this mean in the real world. While it does not feel flimsy, it also fails to feel premium also. 3. The UI/UX design language will feel familiar, in it’s implementation. 4. Battery life of around an hour... read that to mean 45 minutes or so. Additional thoughts: I don’t see this as a threat to GH5/S as it is not the same type of camera... Apples to oranges. This is not something you are going to be carrying all over the place with you. :This is not a DSLR format camera. It’s something else, and that makes me think they should have moved to a new ergonomic form. Blackmagic would not let anyone pop an SD card in, so I cannot say how the IQ is. On screen it looked ok, but not “special”. On the other hand over at the Atlas Lens Co booth they were showing off their lenses with the new Kinefinity Mavo, and from what I could see it looked stellar.

  32. Ya I’ll ask. Believe me. I dug and dug at them to try to get info about the sensor and they won’t say. I don’t think we’ll know exactly if it’s the GH5S sensor until we can do some tests on it. But I’m guessing it is. Ya you can use an adapter and even a metabones speed booster to change the crop to almost full frame! Not so fast my man! The ronin-s has a fabulous follow focus system that I played with today that would be a dream combination with the BMPCC 4K! I never like using autofocus on a gimbal because it never focuses on what I want it to. My brain is always better at focusing on the subject I’m shooting

  33. True, and I don't think they even have that sort of policy structure towards protecting their higher end products in the traditional sense like other companies: Fusion inside Resolve, Pocket at a pricepoint that feels like they're giving it away.

  34. Yeah but now in a sense Jon we don't even Need a Atomos recorder anymore. It is all in camera, the same Codec the Atomos has, It is 10, 12 bit output. Heck you can hook up a SSD right to it also, that is what is the big ass deal with this camera. We don't even need a 5" monitor now, this thing is a game changer. I can tell you all these other company's better be worried, real damn worried. Just on the price of this thing alone, not counting the stats it has. Why the hell would I buy a A7 mk III right now if I am into video big time? A Gh5s either? Ain't happening, and it is half the price. Like I said I think the A7s mk III is going to have to be the best thing since sliced bread and it better cost 1800 bucks to boot.

  36. Unlikely to be the standard GH5 sensor. I bet in a new one but Dave has inferred to be the GH5S... What do we know about? EDIT -- You beat me @SR : ) Different sizes don't seem to match the same sensor of a kind. At least to my humble knowledge :-)
    1 point
  37. Well trouble is we are not sure yet what Sensor this thing really has. So different Speedboosters for each one. And well Nikon or Canon, I would go Canon, but if you are into MF well Nikon MF lens better for that. And about cinematic images my thought is that the newer lenses are Too damn good. I like the old film lenses, lot more character to them. Sort of like the old Zeiss CP.2's, not that I can afford one, let alone a set LoL.

  39. It is funny the way this camera is changing the way you address the GH5S model now, isn't it our good friend Don? ; ) I think we both know how Jon is plainly aware of the power of this BMD introduction and their new introductory price on this game now... :-)

  40. Well I will agree this new BM is not for everyone that is for damn sure. It is not going to be a speed camera, or probably one you take on a trip of a lifetime. But this is a gift from heaven. This is a miracle and the price, I just can't believe it. It is most peoples dream camera on here, at least it is mine. This thing just made my Sony A7s look very Damn Old. And it is a killer camera. And for me it is 995. I was going to buy the full blown Resolve anyways even before this came out.

  42. I preordered. I hope it boosts Sony to release better than 4K60p 8 bit on A7siii though... This thing is magnificent but that AF...... Same camera with Canon DPAF I would pay double the price easily. I love the screen, the recording formats... image will be gorgeous. No IBIS means Gimbal and Gimbal means continuous AF. Never right...

I didn't see that correlation anywhere, but yes I agree that a "good" 1080p is more than enough. But unfortunately with most cameras in this price segment (other than BM and GH5/s) to get a good 1080p means you have to shoot at 4K and convert to 1080p in post.

  49. Here's a quick little spot I shot for a local restaurant's facebook cover yesterday, very quick turnaround because those Sammy colors are so gorgeous! This is basically right out of camera, only a tiny bit of tweaking on a few shots. Normal gamma, color sliders at 1.99, sharpness -10, contrast -4, saturation -2, on both the NX1 and NX500 (the only difference being the master black level on the NX1 was at 15 and obviously the NX500 doesn't have this setting). While this isn't showcasing of increased dynamic range per say, I do really like the way it came out looking. password is jacks

  50. I recently watched an interview with a DoP talking about equipment and he basically said that his preference is that the equipment not impart anything on the 'look' of the film, and therefore he chooses equipment that will accurately capture what is put in front of it. Therefore it was about operating the camera like a technician, choosing lenses that are sharp with minimal distortion, and faithfully executing the direction of the others on set who are artistic, like director etc. His view was that the look of a film is created by the stuff in front of the camera and what is done in post. I've just spent about 20 minutes trying to find the link and FML I can't find it.. I consume too much from too many sources! He did mention that some people like using vintage lenses and creative filters etc, and didn't criticise that approach. I must admit that I personally find this perspective to make sense, and I've looked at things like the Tiffen Mist filters and decided that I can do a 'good enough' emulation of them in post (which lead me to include the Glow OFX plugin into my workflow) but with the added benefit that the effect isn't baked-into the footage and therefore I can tweak it in post to get it how I like rather than being stuck with what the filter gives me.
